Fall 2016
The 2016 riding season is well underway. I’m excited and thrilled to start this new adventure with all of the bikers in our area. The Tri-State has long needed a publication to bring together all bikers from all walks of life and help each other make the connections we all share on our rides. I hope this publication does a few things for our parties. I hope bikers can use this as a tool of entertainment, advice and guidance throughout all of our articles, topics, write-ups and events. I hope all of our
businesses that support our love of motorcycles will be patronized. We really appreciate their generosity to further foster our community by helping each of us help each other. The summer of 2016 is going to be a great year and I can’t wait to see each of you at the many events held across our tristate. As always, keep the wheels down and chrome up.

Summer Review: Local Events

ystique Winery is a fantastic place to be every weekend with live music on their large patio. Mystique Winery also hosts Cajun Fest once a year. Proceeds go to the local humane shelter. Cajun Fest this year had a full line-up of live music. Many vendors were set up above the beautiful lake, selling a variety of clothing, jewelry and desserts. Wine tasting stations were placed around the grounds. 700+ visitors came and went throughout the day. Each visitor received a commemorative wine glass to remember Cajun Fest 2016. Cajun Fest is a great time to get with friends, enjoy wine, and help a great cause. Be on the lookout next Spring for the date for Cajun Fest 2017.
L
incoln Pioneer Village hosted many events this summer. Most notably, were the Historical Rendezvous and Lincoln Pioneer Freedom Festival. The historical rendezvous saw over 40 historical members live in the village over the weekend and perform time period tasks such as sheep sheering, tomahawk throwing and quilting. Another huge event for the Village was the 5 th annual Freedom Festival. On Saturday July 2 nd , over 300 cars, trucks, and motorcycles participated in the Classic Car Show. Throughout the day, guests could visit the village for free, enjoy different food vendors and tour the grounds. At 9 o’clock that night, a 45 minute firework show is put on for all of the guests. It’s one of the largest firework displays in the area. Make plans next year to visit Lincoln Pioneer Village Freedom Festival. Bike Night Review
B
IKE NIGHTS! What a start to riding season! We’ve survived the April showers, and May showers, and June and July showers. I think that has been the best way to describe the season thus far. I too found myself getting some saddle time on a beautiful day to only be drenched minutes later by a sporadic shower that always seems to find my bike. The weather has also wreaked havoc on local bike nights. It felt as though if there was a bike night, you could always count on rain. However, most of the time, bike night persevered through the wind and the rain. Piston’s, Wayback Burgers, and Show-Me’s of Owensboro were local favorite stops for riders. Piston’s was a favorite stop for riders participating in Bud’s HD Thunder on Franklin Street. Thunder on Franklin gained a reputation quickly as “The Bike Night” in the tristate. HUNDREDS of bikes could be found parked along historic Franklin Street in Evansville IN. Wayback also served as host to bike nights every Monday! Wayback offers deals for riders when they cruise in for bike night. Simply riding to Wayback bike night meant you received a ½ price shake and a FREE order of house made chips. Many riders stop in and try their Triple-Triple challenge which includes 9 lbs of beef! Every Sunday, Show-Me’s of Owensboro has drink specials for riders that join the party on bike night. Show-Me’s has weekly prizes for bikers. Attendance at Show-Me’s Bike Night has increased every Sunday since May. It’s the place to be! PAGE 9

Motorcycle Laws “Dead Red” Despite being separated by only the Ohio River and traffic on the twin bridges, Indiana and Kentucky seem to have very different motorcycle laws. If you picked up the Leather N Chrome Summer Edition, you saw the side by side comparison. One of the laws that varies is the use of “Ape Hangers”. In the state of Indiana, it’s illegal to use handlebars that rise above the level of the driver’s shoulders when seated. However, in the state of Kentucky there are no restrictions. Another example of the state’s differences is the “Dead Red” law. In April of 2014 the state of Indiana passed a law commonly known as “Dead Red”. The “Dead Red” law was put in place to benefit motorcyclists and bicyclists alike. When stopped at a red light, many traffic signals cannot detect motorcycles. This can cause a tough decision for the rider. A rider may sit stationary for a long period of time or choose to “break the law” and run a red light. The bill, which was authored by state representative Mike Karickhoff (R), decided something must be done. He proposed to allow motorcyclists the opportunity to proceed on a red light if the signal has failed to detect a vehicle. The bill passed in the state of Indiana 84-10. ABATE has also shown support of the legislation. The “Dead Red” law doesn’t come without warnings. It’s imperative riders use good judgment when proceeding through intersections. You’re moving from a red zone to a green zone, caution should be used. Law Enforcement wants to be clear “Dead Red” isn’t a free pass to run every red light you come to. Once again, it comes down to common sense. Wait at the red light to give the signal an opportunity to detect your presence. If you have waited what should be a multiple change, check traffic and proceed on your route. Other States where “Dead Red” applies: Arkansas, California, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Virginia PAGE 18

ou had your bike serviced this spring, and you’ve been riding all summer every chance you get. When is the last time you checked your tire pressure, lubed and adjusted your chain, or checked the air filter? Depending on the miles, now may be a good time to do another go over. Let’s start with the tires, tires should be checked before every ride. Gauge each tire and put in the appropriate amount of air. You should also check for wear, cupping and cracks. When doing this maintenance, it’s a perfect opportunity to place a trickle charge on the battery, and clean the cables and post. While charging the battery, pull your air filter to check, clean, and replace as necessary. Using your service record, check the miles and determine if your oil should be changed. When deciding if you should change your oil or not, remember, oil is cheap but motors are expensive. If you have a chain drive, check, adjust and lube with quality chain lube. If you ride a belt driven bike, adjust the belt to manufacturer’s specifications. You need to check and be certain your bike isn’t leaking differential oil. The next check you need to make are regarding your brakes. Since most bikes are disc, you can look at the inner and outer pads to determine condition. This quick maintenance can be done in 30 minutes. After checking over your bike, you can now take the trickle charger off your battery. After starting the bike and using a volt meter, it should reach 14 volts past idle. BATTERY A trick of the trade without using a volt meter TIRES is a check of the headlights. The headlights will become brighter when the bike is past idle. Just OIL a littler preventative maintenance could mean AIR FILTER making it home or being stranded on the side of the road.

My First Bike‌
M
y first street bike was a 1986 Yamaha Virago. I was lucky enough to purchase it in 1988. Like most riders, I began riding on two wheels at a young age. I started riding motorcycles in 1976 at only 14 years old. The main reason I began riding was for the pure fun of it. I enjoyed the feeling of "catching a breeze". 40 years later, I still ride for the fun of it. It's always a good time to call up a few friends & catch a breeze. Now, you can catch me around the tristate riding my 2005 Honda Shadow Aero. - Darryl Join us on Facebook!

Ladies in Leather
FALL ISSUE 2016
I'm answering on behalf of Bee's Knees LMRC, ladies' motorcycle riding club, currently with six members Our ages are between mid-30s and 40s. Our occupations are court reporter/stenographer; school principal; MRI technician; utilities engineer; train engineer; and business manager.. How long have you been riding? Most of us have ridden more than five years What got you hooked on riding? Was it just an itch you had, someone influential? The freedom of riding a motorcycle with the sun on our face and the wind in our hair, spending free time with quality friends is what hooked us. Riding is always an adventure! What was your first bike and what do you ride now? For many, their first bike was a Harley. Shell and Rosey currently ride Harley's. Furious rides an Indian. MacGyver rides a Suzuki cruiser; and Weezy and Mystic ride a Yamaha cruiser. We ride what we are comfortable on You’re a part of a Ladies Motorcycle Riding Club called Bees Knees, How’d you become involved with that? The Bee's Knees LMRC was created as an alternative to "traditional" motorcycle riding clubs. It was created to be a lighthearted, friendship-focused environment where we come together for rides and get together in the off season to hang out and discover new places and things together. It's our happy place. What kind of things do you guys do? We go on adventures together, like going to see some bison at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Often, we find a "Diner, Drive-ins and Dives" type of place to eat, like Skoog's in Ottawa, IL for wings or Rip's Chicken in Ladd, Il. In the off-season, we like to check out craft breweries. We are open to anything! How do you guys battle the stigma “Girls don’t ride motorcycles”? There are ignorant people everywhere. Sometimes you just have to show 'me how it's done and lead by example. What would you say to a lady thinking about purchasing her first bike? Go for it!! Just do it! Get a bike that's at least 650cc or 750cc, so you can keep up with other bikes at highway speeds. Other than that, buy something that fits your body and is comfortable, as well as affordable. Most importantly, get something you like. Don't worry what others think. What about joining a club? How do you recruit, or how does someone join? We are a special and unique club. Our focus is on quality, not quantity. We welcome all to ride with us, but it takes someone genuine, sincere, kind, compassionate, and loving to become a Bee; some might call this a "humblebee." To join, we have to get to know you by riding and hanging out together. Like dating, you just know when it's right. Tell us about your favorite group ride. Our favorite rides are when we can all get together at the same time. Our work schedules and sometime health issues prohibit all of us getting together, but when we do, it makes for our favorite rides.
