Words from the Publisher

We’re beginning to gear up for the 2017 riding season. I for one have made it a New Years resolution to ride my bike more. I’m sure everyone would agree that’s a resolution we all can keep. This is the last issue of our inaugural year. We would like to thank all of our first year advertisers and of course all of you loyal readers. Whether this is your fifth Leather N Chrome issue or your first I’d like to thank

you for taking us with you through all of your rides. We continue to connect the riding community with local businesses that care about the lifestyle we live. As warm weather rolls in I know we’ll all be rolling out the bikes.

As always, keep the wheels down and chrome up.

Winter Review 2016

I hope all of you had a great holiday. We’ve been teased with warm weather this January and I know if you’re like me you’re ready to roll out the bike. Even when the weather was cold and rainy, our sponsors were hard at work to make sure they’re providing the best services and atmosphere for you.

2016 Winners- Our sponsors brought home awards this past year. Pistons located on West Franklin Street was Evansville Courier and Press Readers Choice “Best Bar” If you haven’t been to a BUDS HD Thursday Night Thunder on Franklin at Pistons you have to go! They’re starting May 11th! Our friends at Mystique Winery won Best Local Winery through Evansville Living Magazine. Mystique offers a variety of wine and a large outdoor patio overlooking a lake. As you’ll see from their ad, they’re motorcycle friendly! River City PowerSports Show- The Inaugural River City Powersports show was held at the Owensboro Convention Center January 14th and 15th. It was a huge success! Bikes from 15 states participated in two separate bike shows. Over 50 vendors filled the 40,000 square foot show room. The building was full as people stopped by to check out bikes, purchase gear, and just meet up with old friends. It was a great event the tri-state can look forward to every year. You can find more pictures of the event on pages 14 & 15.

Business Spotlight s n u a Br APPLIANCE

In the day and age of Mega-Stores like Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, it’s refreshing to know there’s someone in the appliance business you can trust. Our most recent advertiser, Brauns Appliance is that business. Not only are they a locally owned company but they’ve been on the road for years, enjoying the biker lifestyle and what the road has to offer. We wanted to give you an opportunity to get to know the family of riders behind Brauns Appliance. Tom is not unlike most patriarchs. He’s shared his love of riding with his family. Tom began riding nearly 50 years ago. He currently rides a 2005 Goldwing. He and his wife Vickie enjoy taking a ride through rural Indiana any chance they get. Tom has a few children. His son Michael rides a 1998 Harley Heritage Softail. Like most, Tom began teaching Michael when he was young. Michael has enjoyed riding since he was around 5 years old. Tom has two daughters Melissa and Melanie. Melissa rides a Honda Rebel 250. Melissa also started when she was young. Melissa began at a young age with a love for trail riding. She now enjoys riding the asphalt along side her family. Melanie has traded in the bike for a Honda Pioneer. The Honda Pioneer gives her a chance to enjoy her family and Vickie a chance to enjoy her two grandkids. The families favorite ride is to Saint Louis. While in Saint Louis, they’ll meet extended family and ride to local sights. Their ride isn’t complete until they eat at Lambert Café. Brauns Appliance now focuses on, you guessed it, appliances. They’ve recently downsized, selling the heating and air conditioning section. They’d like to spend more time on the bike but still want to provide great service to the area. They are a certified Frigidaire Dealer. Brauns Appliance can do everything from sell you a stove to service your refrigerator. The biker community is a tight knit group. I hope when you’re in the market, you’ll think of our friends at Brauns Appliance and give them a call. PAGE 10

Ladies in Leather Spring 2017

T

he number of female bikers has risen nearly 50% the past 10 years! Women across the country and across the globe are breaking down barriers and stereotypes associated with the motorcycle industry. When one market shows significant growth and potential, businesses react and accommodate the group. Women are now responsible for 6 billion dollars of growth in the motorcycle industry. Women are responsible for 25% of the industry! Women Motorcycle Clubs are now becoming more prevalent and growing through different chapters. Our fall issue featured a Q&A session with Bees Knees LMRC of northern Illinois. They spoke about the growing interest they’ve seen from other women wanting to pursue riding. Here at Leather N Chrome, we are no different than the rest of the industry. We seek to provide valuable information and adapt to an ever growing clientele. We hope you continue to find our articles informative, our social media entertaining and the events we cover, fun. YOU are the driving force behind the growth of the motorcycle and power sports industry!

WARM UP Have you ever wondered how long it should take to warm your bike up? Most bikes today are fuel injected which adjusts itself by air and temperature. So, it only takes 20 to 30 seconds to warm up. That’s just enough time for the the oil to start circulating good.

I guess my point is…. there’s no need to let a motor idle any longer that it needs to. About Mechanic Mike: Mechanic Mike attended the American Motorcycle Institution in Daytona, Florida graduating in 1977. He has been a certified motorcycle mechanic for Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha for the last 39 years.

Carbureted bikes are a little different. When carbureted bikes are cold, you need to pull the choke out then start it. Push the choke in and out until it idles smoothly with the choke Mechanic Mike off. If the bike is set up right you should be able to take off in about 2 minutes. Motorcycle Laws

Spring 2017

We’re gearing up for riding season. Every year, our lifestyle welcomes new members who decide to buy a bike and put their knees in the wind. Let’s discuss ways to obtain your motorcycle endorsement, or permit in the states of Indiana and Kentucky. In the state of Indiana, most riders begin with a Motorcycle permit. This permit expires after one complete calendar year. To obtain your permit, you must provide all the correct documentation. A list can be found at (www.in.gov/bmv/). Additional criteria states that a rider must pass a written and vision test, as well as pay a fee of $9.50. Indiana Motorcycle Permit Restrictions: -You may not ride without a helmet. -You may only operate a motorcycle during daylight hours. -You are not permitted to carry passengers. There are two ways to receive a motorcycle endorsement. One way is to complete a safety course to waive the on-cycle test. The other is to complete an on-cycle test with Ride Safe Indiana within a year of gaining your permit. The state of Kentucky offers a very similar path to becoming a new rider. To receive your permit you must complete all specifications outlined for new Indiana riders. The only exception being, you are required to pay a $12 fee. Kentucky Motorcycle Permit Restrictions: -No riding between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m., unless it's an emergency or a school/work-related activity. -No riding with passengers. There are two ways to receive your motorcycle license in the state of Kentucky. You must pass a motorcycle skills test administered by the KY State Police or show proof of a completed Kentucky Motorcycle Rider Education course. If you know someone wanting to experience the thrill of a motorcycle be sure to share this info with them. Be a mentor and take the new generation under your wing. You can find us on facebook at facebook.com/leathernchrome1 for more stories and information. PAGE 19

FEATURED BIKE 2017

Gearing up for the River City PowerSports Show, Frank Parsley called and asked if we’d provide an Editors Choice Award. We were honored and couldn’t wait to present this award. Walking into the show during set-up on Friday, I saw this 2016 Indian Chief. I immediately fell in love. It is such a classic looking and clean bike. It has the perfect adjustments and add-ons to enhance the chicness. The owner is Ken Brown of Tennessee and is a motorcycle enthusiast. He and his wife Melissa own multiple Indian bikes, all just as beautiful as this ’16 Chief. We want to thank Ken for allowing us to feature his bike in this section as well as the front cover of our Spring Issue. “Keep the wheels down and chrome up” PAGE 21 1.5.021.FeaturedBike.indd 12

My First Bike‌ It was the summer of 2015. I had been interested in purchasing a motorcycle for quite some time. I felt pressured, considering that my dad was a hardcore rider and my older brother had just recently bought his very first bike. The search for my own bike had begun. I was looking for something small to compliment my little frame. I came across a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 500. It was the perfect match. It took me about 2 weeks to get a handle on operating a motorcycle. Once I was fluent in operating a bike, there was nothing that could stop me from riding it whenever and wherever I pleased. I quickly became a fan of the sound of the engine, the wind in my face and of course, people constantly asking if they could ride with me. -Malin
