Did you know?!? In Indiana and Illinois, a motorcycle operated on the roads must be equipped with handlebars that are not higher than the shoulders of the driver when seated in the saddle. In Kentucky and Illinois, all persons operating a motorcycle must wear protective eye gear. In Illinois, motorcycles and motor-driven cycles need not be equipped with electric turn signals. PAGE 15

For the Love of Vintage... David & Bonnie Kincaid of Boonville, Indiana have turned their basement into a collection of vintage scooters and bicycles along with a few motorcycles. Their collection started 27 years ago. David worked construction and happened to be in Pineville, NC when he saw a truck go by with a small 1952 Simplex motorcycle. He guesses the bike was on it’s way to the salvage yard. David made his co-worker put his suitcase on top of the truck so they could bring the bike home. It took David two years to restore the bike. After that, David and Bonnie continued to purchase and restore all the ones in their basement. David does research on every one of his bikes. He shared with us that the Simplex was manufactured in New Orleans. According to David, Simplex was the first company to have air conditioning in the building for their assembly line workers. They find most of their bikes at yard sales and estates. David and Bonnie go to the Cushman Rally every year and have won awards for their bikes. PAGE 16

David and Bonnie have quite a few All-State brands and those were initially sold by Sears.
The Kincaids’ oldest bike is a 1946 Whizzer.

My First Bike… Winter 2017
“My first bike was a ’73 353 Honda. I purchased it in 1977. It’s the same bike I taught my sister Carolyn how to ride in the GE parking lot off of old Hartford road. My inspiration for getting a bike was my best friend. I rode his, a 1966 250 Harley Davidson. The first bike I ever wrecked I didn’t get seriously injured and fortunately the bike only had a dent on the gas tank. That same friend found me my current bike a 2008 Harley Davidson Fatboy. I have been riding for 40 years. To me riding is therapy. I can clear my mind of all my worries and troubles. Being able to break away from reality for a while and just take a ride is very soothing for me. “-Jerry

Santa Claus Lodge, September 1-4 2017 Leather & Lace MC, the world’s largest women’s motorcycle club, rolled into Spencer County during the Labor Day weekend. This weekend was their “MidSummer Nationals.” Labor Day weekend is set aside for the children of Leather & Lace MC. This is their own special weekend of fun, education, and comradery with one another. The event is a 3-5 day getaway where the Sisters from all across the continent gather with the Lace Kidz. Their activities included a trip to Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari, zip-lining and horseback riding. In addition, everyone spent an educational day at Abraham Lincoln’s boyhood home, learning about our 16th President’s early life. Jennifer Chaffin formed Leather & Lace MC in 1983, by enlisting the help of likeminded women riders who wanted to help children and give back to their community. The Lace Sisterhood help mold the children of today to be model riders of the future by teaching them the importance of “paying it forward,” always exhibiting respectable behavior, and being involved in their communities in a positive giving way. We are so happy they chose our community to celebrate their Mid-Summers retreat!

LADIES N
LEATHER We schedule appointments with our doctor to take care of our general health, our dentist for our oral health, and our optometrist for our eye health. But where do your feet rank on your list of health priorities? Having healthy feet is vital to our overall health, which makes getting regular pedicures very important to the health of your feet. Riding comes with a lot of added stress to our feet. A good pedicure can be relaxing, relieve stress, and serve as conditioning for the health of your feet. A pedicure includes soaking in warm water, exfoliation of the skin, a massage with oil and lotion, and clipping, filing and trimming of the nail. Moisturized feet are less likely to get blisters, cracks, and other foot problems; abrasions of the skin on our feet can lead to infection. Massage is essential in promoting circulation, which helps relieve tension in the calves and feet. The increase in blood flow can reduce pain, distribute heat throughout the body, and help with leg and foot fatigue, which is critical for bikers. The exfoliation process, which is the removal of dead skin, prevents skin cells from accumulating. This accumulation of cells causes painful and can lead to uncomfortable bunions and corns. Removal of dead skin on your feet, especially the heel, promotes new cell growth, which creates smoother and softer feet. Regular clipping, trimming, and filing of the toenails prevent the nails from growing inward and causing infection. The elimination of dirt and bacteria from your feet and under your toenails helps prevent nail diseases (fungi) and odors. Healthy toenails also help protect the toes from trauma. Take care of yourself and your feet, so that a painful foot issue never stops you from enjoying your bike. Make sure to get a pedicure once a month to keep your feet in healthy condition.

around the town with Mechanic Mike
LEAKS & SQUEAKS Do you have that annoying drop of something under your bike on the garage floor? Is there a squeak or rattle coming from the front or rear of the bike? The winter months are a good time to get serious and find those rascals. A leak can be as simple as oil coming from the fork seal or it could be a little trickier to find if it’s coming from the lower part of the motor. To find the trickier leaks, you need to have a very clean area to run the bike and then be on constant watch for something to start oozing. Some of the things it could be is a bad gasket, or oil going through the threads of a screw, or a small crack in the cover or case. Once you know where it’s coming from, you can determine the repair needs. Trying to find the squeak or rattle is sometimes an exercise in perseverance. Determining the location is the first step to diagnosing the problem. You need to figure out if it’s coming from the front or back of the bike. To do that, you can apply the front brakes and push on the front forks. That will let you know if it’s in the front. To know if it’s in the back, you can jump up and down on the seat. If it’s in the front, some possible issues could be a brake caliper is loose. The rattle could be from the front fender being loose. Sometimes the horn is loose too and that causes a squeak or rattle. If the squeak/rattle is in the back, it could be a worn out chain or sprocket or it might be a loose rear brake caliper. If the rattle is from your rear shocks, that usually means they need to be replaced. These are some easy solutions to diagnose the leaks and squeaks. Sometimes though, it requires an expert to figure out what it is and how to fix it. About Mechanic Mike: Mechanic Mike attended the American Motorcycle Institution in Daytona, Florida graduating in 1977. He has been a certified motorcycle mechanic for Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha for the last 39 years. PAGE 28
