Doing Our Part to Ensure A Cure T
hroughout the month of October, countless organizations and charities all over the world have decided to play a part in the fight to end breast cancer. In what has become known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this international health awareness campaign has amplified the scope of coverage surrounding the disease in order to increase both awareness and funding for research. Together, the goal is to continue binding together to support women all over, whether they are survivors, currently fighting the disease, or activists looking to support the cause. For many years, the American Cancer Society has made it a priority to encourage women to get mammograms, which is still recognized as the most effective tactic for detecting breast cancer early on. As a result, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 with the baby pink ribbon being chosen as the symbol that everyone has come to recognize and love. Known as one of the most widely recognized foundations in the fight against breast cancer, the Susan G. Komen Foundation began branding itself with the pink ribbons as they passed them out during a New York City race in 1991. Two years later, Self Magazine and Estee Lauder began a partnership that founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and adopted the pink ribbon as its official symbol. From then on, history was made.
Today, the pink ribbon movement has spread to everything from professional athletes’ uniforms to famous landmarks twinkling in pink lights during the month of October. This worldwide “pink” movement has come to represent a sense of community and togetherness for women all over who may be fighting the battle against the disease. The Real Estate Book is doing its part as well, by supporting the cause and donating to the Susan G. Komen Foundation beginning Oct. 1. From then throughout the end of the month, we will be donating $5,000 as well as donning pink ribbons throughout magazines in markets all over the country.
