CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF SEAFOOD In 1945, Holton C. Harris, grandfather of Jerry Harris and Karen Harris Oertel, owned and operated a plant where Harris Seafood Company is now. Its name was Kent Oyster Company. After William (Captain Bill) Holton Harris returned home from serving in the Army in WWII, he eventually purchased the oyster packing plant and continued to operate under Kent Oyster Company. This is the site where Harris Crab House is currently located. In the early 1900’s there were 20 shucking houses located in the Kent Narrows area. 1947 – 1957 Captain Bill Harris and his wife, Violet Mae Harris (Sis), while raising their young family including son Jerry, 4, and daughter Karen, 1, purchased the property known as W. H. Harris Seafood. They packed oysters under Bay Shore Brand. They sold all processed oysters in 5 gallon cans to the Baltimore market both local and nationwide. The local Maryland, North Eastern Corridor, West Coast to California, and Canadian markets were productive as well. There were developing markets all across the country. Hurricane Hazel severely affected the area and seafood industry when it hit in 1954. 1957 – 1967 The small oyster can market (quarts, pints and half pints) became prominent during this era. The soft shell clam industry started during this time. Captain Bill partnered with Louis Crouch shucking clams. Crabs became a market source as well during the spring, summer and fall seasons. When the crabs were combined with the oyster season (Fall & Winter), they were able to continue the business year round. 1967 – 1977 Jerry Harris, son of Bill & Sis, joined his father in 1965 for a period of time and then rejoined again in 1968. Art Oertel, daughter Karen’s husband and Bill & Sis’ son-in- law, worked for the business part time doing maintenance and driving a truck to pick up oysters. He joined full time in the early 70’s. Karen, daughter, and Pat, Jerry’s wife and Bill & Sis’ daughter-in- law, worked part time in the office during this time. They both moved to full time in the mid 70’s. At this time the oyster sold for approximately $ 8.00 per gallon. W. H. Harris Seafood employed approximately 70 people from the community. Hurricane Agnes severely affected the area and seafood industry when it hit in 1972.

1977 – 1987 Oysters in the bay became scarce during this time. In order to remain in business, oysters were supplemented by purchasing from the Gulf of Mexico, New England, New Jersey and Delaware regions. Our history of the industry was that when one area was without oyster product, then the other areas would often help by selling their oysters to the area in need. There were many times when W. H. Harris Seafood sold to the others states/areas to assist them when their oyster product was not available. The business handled and sold many blue crabs during this time, marketing to Baltimore, D.C., and other local areas. Also, they had a shed they used to sluff out soft crabs, selling them in the very same markets. The first Harris Crab House was opened during this time in the summer of 1981. It was located on the waterfront side of the oyster processing building. There were 11 tables with 6 seats to a table seating allowing 66 guests to be seated at one time for the first year. They employed approximately 10 people from our local community. The menu was limited to raw and steamed foods only: shrimp, oysters, clams, crabs, etc. We started the first practice of sharing tables in the area. This idea came from the New England area which the W. H. Harris Seafood owners would visit customers for trade shows and sales trips. The clamming industry had been scarce but started to rebound during this time. There were tractor trailer loads of oysters purchased and sold during this time. Sometimes as many as two trailer loads a week were delivered to the West Coast and Canada as well. The small can market and half shell market started to expand also. 1987 – 1997 Captain Bill and Miss Sis retired. Jerry & Pat and Art & Karen purchased the business and the land. The restaurant became more successful and outgrew its space. A new larger Harris Crab House was built and had a soft opening on March 8, 1991. The advertised date for opening was March 14 th . We opened to a full house and a line waiting to get in. We continued to employ approximately 90 people from our community during the peak of the season. Concern over the new high rise bridge over the Kent Narrows Waterway was high. Local businesses joined together and created an advertising campaign for the area. W. H. Harris Seafood’s market for oysters continued to grow that side of the company. We continued to purchase oysters from local watermen, but had to look to purchasing from other states to have the business survive. Concern over the lack of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay and a failing industry encouraged the State of Maryland to create the Oyster Round Table. The local watermen and representatives from many parts of the industry served on many commissions and county organizations such as this. Karen Oertel served on the Oyster Round Table, and has been on the board of the Oyster Recover Partnership for over 20 years, as a representative for Harris family businesses. This organization continues to work with watermen, the Federal and State government, and the University of Maryland in increasing the health of the Chesapeake Bay and replenishing its oyster population. In the summer of 1989 and beyond, the opening/expanding of Red Eyes Dock Bar, Fisherman’s Crab Deck, Mears Point Marina, The Jetty, etc. helped to increase the amount of customers visiting the Kent Narrows area.
1997 – 2004 To grow the businesses, Harris Crab House and W. H. Harris Seafood began to offer off site crab feasts. Steam rigs went to events in Maryland, D.C., and Pennsylvania so that customers could enjoy the Harris Family crabs. At this time the restaurant started to make our own Nutty Buddies, a homemade ice cream cone with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and peanuts. Hotels and other restaurants still buy the Nutty Buddies as a perfect treat at the end of a good meal. 2004 – Present The businesses continue to remain with their services and supply great seafood to our customers. We continue to buy product from approximately 350 watermen in the Chesapeake Bay region. Harris Seafood Company, LLC is owned and operated by Jason Ruth. He employs approximately 45 people from the local community. The oyster packing house operates year round and also shucks clams for part of the year. Harris Seafood Company places a great emphasis on ensuring the future of the oyster industry through aquaculture Last year alone, they planted over 72 million oysters on both public grounds and private leases to give local watermen oysters to work on in the future. Harris Seafood has nearly 2000 acres of productive oyster bottom under management, providing a year round supply of Chesapeake’s famed oyster. Harris Crab House is operated by President and General Manager Michael Harris. The Harris’ and Oertels’ have kept the land in the family for the entire 70 years. Their children all serve on the Board and manage the properties. Generations of family members and employee’s family members have worked or are still working at Harris Crab House. We are proud to be local Maryland business owners and employee approximately 140 people from our community during peak season. We are proud to employ our community and have them represent what we feel is the very best of the Eastern Shore traditions and history.

1. Look for high-quality products. When it comes to paint, quality matters. Search for a combination paint-and-primer to save time and effort plus ensure complete coverage and deep color saturation. The paint should have high hiding ability and resist dirt and scuffs.

Use paint samples, rather than chips. The most realistic way to envision the color in your home is to see it in action. Holding a card up to the wall with a paint color on it just doesn’t have the same effect as the real thing. Many paint retailers offer small sample cans for just a few dollars. Use these to paint a few stripes of each color option in the room you’ll be painting. 4. Use the right painting supplies. High-quality painting tools save you time over the course of your project and produce the most beautiful finish. For best results, use a lint-free roller cover. Select brushes made of nylon and polyester. For flawless edges, use a painter’s tape specifically designed for your surface type.
5. Prep before painting. Begin by removing all wall fixtures, such as pictures, doors and light switches. If you have small cracks or holes in your walls, remove any dust and apply a patching material. Make sure to allow this to dry completely before sanding the finished area. Wash away oil, grease or wax stains by dampening the surface, applying mild detergent with a sponge and then rinsing the wall clean. In order to boost a house’s value in the market, it is first important to learn what prospective buyers or tenants are searching for in a house. For most homeowners, the biggest concern is usually the budget required for upgrade, renovation and home maintenance. The great news is that there’s no need to spend thousands of dollars for home improvements. Just follow these 10 tips for the best home upgrades to add home value. Knock down a wall and go for open concept. Not only will it create an illusion of a bigger space, but it is a home design trend that is very much in demand today. Just make sure to have the wall assessed for possible electrical wires housed behind it before hitting it with a sledge hammer.

Make the kitchen area workable. This means making the kitchen area a functional place where you can actually cook a decent meal. Update faucets, fix leaking pipes, buff the counters and repaint cupboards and cabinets. It is not necessary to replace everything with a new kitchen system. Today’s Popular Choices Offer Much to Choose From By Keith Loria If you are selling your home and you have an old, worn-down or fading fence on your property, chances are that it will leave a prospective buyer with an unfavorable impression. One solution is to just remove it, but fences are often looked at as a good thing, so replacing or renovating the fence is a better solution. Many agents agree that something simple like fence updating can help set a house apart from others in the neighborhood. “The feeling of security with a fence is about keeping something or someone in or out of a defined space,” says Gregory Knoop, of Hercules Fence Corporation in South Carolina. “Sometimes these goals overlap. Fencing can help delineate property lines, or mark off the area around a pool, or a homeowner might want to confine their dog, and keep other dogs out.”

While the standard silver-gray chain link fence remains the most economical model, there is a plethora of fence options to better match a home’s style and color scheme. “People are going away from chain-link fencing, and going more to the PVC, vinyl or aluminum fencing,” says Tom McKenney, owner of Tom’s Fence Co. in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. “It’s a better look, and a lot of people want more privacy.” Cedar fencing is growing in popularity for aesthetic reasons, although beige boards will weather to a silver-gray color if not sealed or stained. Another fast-growing segment of home fencing is polyvinyl. Extremely durable, vinyl withstands harsh elements and offers carefree maintenance. “This plastic fencing can recreate the storied white picket fence of American lore, but with zero maintenance,” Knoop said. “It’s more expensive, but will last much longer than many of the other options.” Wooden fences are charming until they weather, warp, and rot from the elements or lack of diligent annual maintenance. Wood also requires frequent sealing to keep it viable. “When choosing a fence, know what your goal is,” Knoop says. “For safety, choose fencing with pickets close enough together so a child or dog can’t stick their head through and become trapped or strangled. For privacy or noise reduction, choose a taller, solid fence.” McKinney says that for yards with many ups and downs, you should use stairstepped fencing, which ensures a level fence. Another important thing to consider: When adding a fence to your property it’s vital that you check with your municipality about local zoning ordinances and building codes as some fencing projects require a permit. Of course, you could always go the Tom Sawyer route and simply paint your old fence, but make sure that you replace all broken sections as well, experts note.
