TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR HOME FROM

TERMITES Along with many other pests that lay dormant in the winter, termites typically swarm and invade homes during the spring and summer months. So, now is the perfect time to start protecting your home against these severe damage causing invaders.

There are two main types of termites: subterranean termites and drywood termites. There are many similarities, but many distinct differences you need to be on the lookout for. The subterranean termite, as its name would suggest, nests in the ground, and their damage starts there too. If you suspect that you have a subterranean termite infestation in your home, the first places you should check for damage are the parts of your house that are closest to the ground, such as the basement or crawlspaces. Damaged wood in these areas along with visible mud tubes along walls and other structures sign that you have a subterranean infestation.

Drywood termites nest in the very wood they are infesting, instead of the ground. They can arrive via the air and infest structures without leaving any evidence behind like mud tubes. To check for this termite species, inspect your roof or attic for signs of termites burrowing into the wood, like small holes in wooden surfaces. Any wood surfaces that are directly exposed to the outdoors are particularly at risk of infestation and substantial damage.

If you suspect you have a termite infestation, time is of the essence, so contact your local exterminator or pest control firm immediately. Other tips for protecting your home from termites include:

Knowing where the termites can hide and breed. This includes: • Wooden structures, such as porches and decks, in direct contact with the ground. • Stacks of firewood or other loose wood near the house. • Damp soil near foundations, often from faucets or gutters. • Trees and shrubs near the house.

Spotting surefire signs of an infestation, which includes: • Noticing the swarm of winged insects around your home. • Any cracked or bubbling paint or frass (termite droppings). • Wood that sounds hollow when tapped. • Mud tubes around the house, on wood structures or in crawl spaces. • Discarded wings from swarming termites.

Your pest control specialist will come up with a detailed plan of attack against your wood-destroying invaders, but some proactive tips include: • Checking water drainage sites to ensure they remain blockage free. • Monitoring how much water leaks from pipes, gutters, A/C units and other things prone to leaking. • Caulking around utility lines or pipes. • Getting rid of rotting wood or debris near the home. • Checking wooden structures for damage. • Placing screens on outside vents. By following these helpful tips and working with a trusted pest control firm, your home will be protected from these destructive insects this spring and summer.

Keep your smart home safe with these tips USE STRONG PASSWORDS

UPDATE APPS AND FIRMWARE

We’ve all heard it countless times, but having a strong password really is the first step against hackers and is enough to keep most out of your devices. However, many people prioritize creating passwords that are easy to remember (or that don’t change) over their home’s security. The best passwords are a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Longer, “pass phrases” or sentences also work well. As a rule of thumb, change your passwords every time you add a new device to the network, or at least every few months.

Most people generally remember to update their smartphone apps but updating the apps and firmware in smart devices around the house can be a different story. Just like mobile apps, smart devices are constantly being updated and often come out with updates to increase performance, remove bugs, or improve safety. Using an old version of a device’s firmware makes it easier for hackers to attack because the firmware is vulnerable and not running at its full potential.

BE SELECTIVE WITH SMART HOME DEVICES

WATCH THE WI-FI NETWORK

The growth of smart home technology means that not every product is created equally. Before bringing something into your home that could put your privacy and safety at risk, be sure to do your research. In general, use products from brands you are familiar with—bigger brands typically have more updates and better customer service just in case hacking does occur.

Putting smart home devices on a public wireless internet network makes them much easier to hack and makes them more visible to hackers. Instead, opt for a private home network that has a strong password and network protection. To be even safer, security experts recommend putting your smart home devices on a separate wireless network from your home computer, which greatly reduces the risk of hacking across devices.

TURN OFF UNUSED DEVICES It can be tempting to always leave every device plugged in and turned on, but that just gives hackers more opportunities to find a way in. Powering down your router or smart home devices that don’t need to be on all the time, can keep your network more secure.

How to Practice POOL CHEMICAL SAFETY With the summer months right around the corner, it’s about time to prepare your pool for the season. Whether you’re opening your pool for the summer, or eventually closing it down for the winter, it’s always important to pay close attention to the chemicals you are using, as they impact everyone and everything that comes into contact with your pool. Here are some best practices for pool chemical safety.

Read the directions. Closely reading the directions, so that you know how to properly use, store and add chemicals to the pool, is paramount. Make sure to follow the instructions closely to avoid any potential accidents. Remember, each chemical needed to keep your pool swimmer-ready are specifically designed for a different purpose. Don’t assume that all chemicals are administered the same – each one comes with its own set of instructions, so it’s important to ensure that you understand each of them individually and combines.

Protect yourself. Like in chemistry class, you’ll want to make sure you protect yourself from the effects of the chemicals. Always wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, or an air mask when adding chemicals to your pool. These items will be able to protect you from those pesky chemical burns. Also, keep in mind that pool chemicals should be opened in the open air, not an enclosed space. Doing so will help you avoid inhaling harmful chemicals.

Bring the chemicals to the water. If a chemical requires that you add it to water, be sure to fill a container with water and then add the chemical after. The mixture may splash out of the container if water is added to a chemical and that may seriously harm you. There is nothing fun about having a pool that you are unable to swim in due to injury.

Store your chemicals properly. Chemical storage is key to keeping yourself safe in between uses. Like most chemicals, keep them away from flammable materials and tightly close the lids when they are not in use. Pool chemicals should also not be stored on top of each other, the mixing of chemicals is dangerous and could have disastrous results. Keep the chemicals in a safe place where pets and children can’t get in them, like locked up in a shed. By following these tips, you’ll have a head start of pool safety this summer. Spring is here, which means that flowers and blossoms are in full bloom, and trees, plants and grass will be vibrant once again. But along with that wonderful spring renewal comes the return of unwanted growth in the form of weeds. However, if you prepare to stay on top of weeds now, you’ll have a much easier time fighting them this spring and summer. To start preparing your property against weeds, inspect these following areas to make sure they won’t be hospitable to them. Consult your local landscaping professionals as well, to come up with a detailed plan to prevent weeds.

1. PATHWAYS. Paths made from loose materials, such

as bark mulch, decomposed granite or stones, can act as seeding beds, offering a natural spot for weeds to grow. Have weed preventer sprayed on these materials.
