What are the biggest mistakes you continually see sellers make? Positioning the home for the market is vital to maximizing the odds of success for today’s sellers. As a result, we believe that attention to detail is paramount. Often times, sellers will resist investing the time, effort and resources to utilize staging, make updates, increase curb appeal and act on other minor improvements. Sellers who take advantage of and prioritize these items will most likely see better results for their listing.
What should sellers expect from their listing agent to maximize exposure of their distinctive property? With over 94% of homebuyers searching online, the marketing elements should include professional photography, videography if applicable and a carefully crafted content strategy describing the property’s features and benefits. In addition to these digital elements, listing agents should utilize a digital marketing platform that specifically targets a number of qualified buyers through national and international exposure.

What is your outlook on the luxury market in Southwest Washington? We are very optimistic regarding the future of the luxury real estate market for both buyers and sellers. Many sellers come to Clark County to take advantage of favorable tax benefits as well as its close proximity to Portland International Airport and the city of Portland. This continued interest, as well as the increased economic investment by businesses like Fisher Investments, Integra Telecom and Banfield, can only improve the overall markets for luxury real estate.

Burnt Bridge Cellars, Vancouver
Y
our hosts at Burnt Bridge Cellars, Mark and Kim Mahan and David and Julie Smith, have been making wine since 2008. Their world class wines have won gold, silver and bronze medals ever since. In fact, of all the wines they have submitted to competitions over the years, only two of winemaker David Smith’s wines did not earn a medal. They purchase grapes from six of the best vineyards in eastern Washington. All the winemaking work is done manually at their winery behind the tasting room at 1500 Broadway St. in downtown Vancouver. Burnt Bridge makes their wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and other grapes that grow particularly well in eastern Washington. In addition to varietal bottlings, they make wonderful Bordeaux-style and Rhone-style blends. Many people say they make the best wines

in the area. Their spacious and bright tasting room is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and in the evening on the first Friday of each month. A kitchen is adjacent to the tasting room. In this fantastic and roomy space Kim Mahan, the owner of Class Cooking, teaches cooking classes. She specializes in gourmet cooking and teaches hands on classes for 8 to 14 students. You can join a scheduled class or work with her to design a special class for your group. Kim also provides gourmet catering for events at the winery for up to 75, or a sit down meal for as many as 16. She has small plates for sale on first Fridays. Clark County’s Farmers Markets
One of the (Relatively) Best-Kept Secrets in Town By Michael Hustad, Broker, John L. Scott Real Estate (360-921-3256) Buying, cooking and eating 4-star restaurant quality food at reasonable prices; enjoying live music, artists, on a sunny day - this is true self-indulgence. But wait. All the while, you are supporting your local community, economy, and farmers and small businesses. Self-indulgence while making a difference at the same time - it doesn’t get much better than that. Welcome to the Farmers Markets of Vancouver, Camas and Salmon Creek. Vancouver Farmers Market is the essence of this description. Nestled alongside peaceful and perfectly appropriated Esther Short Park, Vancouver Farmers Market has it all. The market is Southwest Washington’s #1 visitor attraction and home to over 250 vendors. The Vancouver Farmers Market is a pet friendly place (and there’s a lot of happy dogs around) where you can chat with people who have grown or created your purchase, grab a bite to eat, listen to music, stroll through the park, watch the kids play, and enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day. It doesn’t get any better. You’ll discover fresh and local produce, flowers, plants, baked goods, delicious food, pet treats, and accessories for yourself, home, or garden. In addition, craft goods, handmade clothing, homemade teas and jellies can be found. The variety of fun in the beautiful environment of Esther Short Park is endless. While the numbers may seem high, exclusivity and quality of product is still the name of the game. All vendors must be approved by a committee – or “jury,” if you will – before opening business at the market. After you’ve had your share of Vancouver’s finest, on Wednesday head over to East County to visit the Camas Farmers Market. The Camas Farmers Market is more intimate and has a truly “exclusive” feel. There is the strongest sense of community and small town aura just outside the main metropolis. It fills up with freshly harvested seasonal produce, flowers, pastured meat, eggs, and prepared foods. Get cooking tips from local cooks and enjoy local music. You can even speak to a Master Gardener about your garden questions.
IF YOU GO • Camas Farmers Market, 3-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 10 on Fourth Avenue between Northeast Everett and Northeast Franklin streets in downtown Camas. • Vancouver Farmers Market, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 28 at Sixth and Esther streets in downtown Vancouver. • Salmon Creek Farmers Market, Opening day, Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m weekly through September; and Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the location behind Biscuits Cafe and Wayside Market on NE 134th St. in Salmon Creek, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., weekly through September.
The Camas market is known for its great prices to go along with the high quality; they are some of the lowest you will find around. One customer said the $10 bouquet of flowers is “the best you can find.” While smaller, the variety at Camas is great like in Vancouver Starting Tuesday, July 8th, take a drive north up I-5 to Salmon Creek’s Farmers Market at the Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital location. Salmon Creek has a second venue (the larger location) that opens that Thursday behind Biscuits Café and Wayside Market on 134th St. Salmon Creek’s market promises live music every Thursday at the Biscuits Café/Wayside Market location. The market offers the best of everything like the previous two markets. What’s unique is the Salmon Creek Farmers Market has a program called Biz Kids. It is designed to encourage young entrepreneurs ranging in ages 11-17. On four Thursdays (July 17, July 31, August 14 and August 28) a canopy is set up allowing kids to sell handmade, hand-grown, hand-produced, handmanufactured or hand-crafted products. Tips for All Venues: Many vendors do not provide their own bags; you should bring your own. Also, most are cash-only.

The scoop about
Sweet Local Cherries Cherry Almond Clafouti with vanilla bean ice cream (recipe below)
Local cherries ripen for picking in mid to late June and much of July. There are around a dozen farms in Vancouver that offer fresh cherries. Some have picked the cherries for you and some allow you to pick your own. Farms have either seasonal hours posted or you may be required to phone ahead for an appointment. A few that post seasonal hours online are Firestone Farms, Frice’s Berry Farm, Joe’s Place Farm, and Kunze’s Farm Store. All local farms offer a wide selection of other fruits and vegetables as well as sweet cherries. Buying locally is good for our county’s economic health and your own health as well. Keeping our local farmers busy feeding us helps to ensure that we’ll have food crops available in times of turmoil. Farming helps recharge our groundwater. Using a local supplier reduces transportation costs as well as the threat transport presents to the environment.
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cherries have several cancer-preventive components and may help reduce cancer risk. Similar to red wine, there are pigments in cherries that may help with cardiovascular health. They are also high in potassium and may be beneficial to diabetics. Antioxidants in fresh cherries help relieve inflammation, easing pain, and can also help lower blood pressure. All this and only 43 calories in 10 juicy fresh cherries!
1 vanilla bean scraped 2 cups of cherries pitted and cut in half 1/4 cup sliced almonds toasted
• Using a blender, combine the milk, 1/3 cup sugar, eggs,
4 eggs 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 2/3 cup all purpose flour 1/8 teas. salt 1 cup milk 1/2 tsp almond extract 1 tsp vanilla extract
• Place dish into the oven for about 7-10 minutes, until a film of batter sets in the pan but the mixture is not baked through. Remove from oven (but don’t turn the oven off, yet).
spray tart pan bake 350 for 30 minutes
• sprinkle with topping and ice cream

vanilla, salt and flour, and blend. • Lightly butter a 10 inch tart pan and pour a 1/4-inch layer of the blended mixture over the bottom. Set remaining batter aside.
• Distribute the pitted cherries over the set batter in the pan, then sprinkle with the remaining sugar. Pour the remaining batter over the cherries and sugar. • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 60 minutes, until the clafouti is puffed and brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cherries are good with just a quick wash and plucked from a bowl with your fingers but they are also good in a salad, in a sauce over pork chops, or chopped in your rice or oatmeal. Picking up your cherries locally means you get to see where they grow and to pop them in your mouth fresh off the tree!

Featured Profile: Gretchen Schauffler
When Devine Color Founder Gretchen Schauffler was 10 years old, her mother moved the family from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Portland, Oregon. While living in the Pacific Northwest, Gretchen craved the vibrant colors of Puerto Rico, where buildings are brightly hued and the Caribbean Ocean sparkles with blues and greens. To express herself and stay tied to her roots, she began incorporating color into her home. An artist, Gretchen experimented with a collage technique that helped her create color compositions with anything from paper to texture to paint. People who visited her home loved her unique combinations. Her colors exuded personality, expression and understanding. All the colors seemed to belong together. It didn’t take long for word to get out about Gretchen’s color consulting and her unique color philosophy. Every time Gretchen worked with a client, she gathered samples of the wood, pillows, curtains and other adornments in their homes. With this inspiration, she would then create color palettes at her home, not theirs. The color collections Gretchen made proved to be the perfect background for her clients’ furnishings. She artfully connected their belongings with the purpose of wall color. This is how she began to understand that not every color gets to be on a wall, just like not every color should be on your lips. Searching through thousands of paint colors in typical fans decks led to frustration instead of inspiration, so Gretchen began to make her own paint colors. Devine Color was born when she took the six gorgeous colors of the rainbow and began creating 12 unique palettes. By neutralizing, transforming and enhancing those palettes, Gretchen created more supporting palettes including Pacific Trail MixTM, Valley Vineyards and Spices, Ocean Tide PoolsTM and more.
Today Gretchen serves as the Creative Director of Devine Color, which has grown to include 209 trend-°©‐proof luminous hues organized into 19 inspiring collections. The creamy wall coatings are available at DevineColor.com and Amazon.com.
Q Q. Have you always had such a strong sense of color? How did you parlay that into your current career? A. I have always relied on the power of observation. As an artist I understood that not everyone had the confidence to play with color with the freedom and confidence that artist do. When I started to see walls as gigantic canvases my art turned towards making colors that gave people a way to experience hues in a fun, fresh and approachable way at home.
Q. How does the Pacific Northwest impact and/or inspire the colors and interior palettes you create? A. I am originally from Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico and Portland are so different and yet, oh so similar. Both stay luscious green year round! But, the big difference is that Portland has gray skies 9 months out of the year, and that lack of light is mirrored on the walls in interior spaces. Therefore, wall colors need to be tempered, so I add
a certain warmth and saturation to them. In the last two years I got the chance to recreate old and new Devine Colors in new brighter bases so that colors would be enhanced by the new LED lighting and the modern shift we are heading towards…what I call “color illumination.” Q. What colors are popular for interiors right now? What do you think is next? A. Devine Color recently created new “Fresh Luminous Pastels” that are to die for! The 12 hues are available at Rodda, and they completely transcend pastels of the past. This is where I believe we are heading. Past whites and onto brights. Q. Devine Color calls its hues “trendproof.” How can homeowners keep up with what’s in fashion without creating spaces that are out of date in a year? A. From my artistic point of view, walls are back-
grounds. In a painting the background color sets the temperature, tone and depth of the subject. The same thing can be said if you look at a room like a subject. Devine Colors can be worked in hundreds of combinations to embrace every style décor and personality (how ever often they change) to be totally trend-proof. I always say that the same 7 colors in the rainbow that Monet was working with, everyone is still working with. The new pastels I created are translucent versions of Devine, and are also trend-proof. Q. What advice do you have for homeowners who are trying to choose paint colors? A. In my Devine Color world everyone is an artist and I help them get there. There are no bad colors, just bad color combinations. So choose colors in pairs, not in isolation. And, never make a color decision based on fear, but always based on love.
DEVINE COLOR
LADY SINGS THE BLUES…Crisp. Clean. Calm. Blue is a surprisingly hot color for cool spaces—traditional to transitional to totally contemporary. “Sadly, blue tends to have a bad rap as a somber shade,” says Gretchen Schauffler, founder and creative director of Devine Color. “But, it’s truly one of the happiest, most helpful hues. Not only does it stir the senses with its soothing symbolism of sky and sea, but its depth and confidence also make it a nice neutral where beige, gray or white just isn’t right.” Ever since a childhood spent near the Atlantic Ocean’s tranquil blue in her native Puerto Rico, Schauffler has been singing the shade’s praises, continually looking to the color to inspire peaceful, pretty rooms. Here are a few of her tips for feeling blue at home:
Watch Your Tones: Keep in mind the
color fluidity from room to room. Rather than harsh juxtapositions of color, subtle shifts in blue tones and shades in spaces can reinforce feelings of calm. Here, a kitchen divided into a breakfast table space and a cooking and prep space slips almost seamlessly from a deep hue, Devine Cool, to a blue-green blend, Devine Manzanita.
Work One Wall: Mind the trim!
It’s as important as choosing the right color for your walls. For a more dramatic effect, paint walls a bold blue like Devine Jay, and then choose a bright, crisp white like Devine Icing for trim to really make the bold color pop. To create a more subdued setting, paint trim in a more subdued hue such as Devine Shell, which is good for spaces designed for winding down.
Be Two-Faced: Blue can be a highly versatile neutral,
or it can control the theme of a room. To create a tranquil space, try more traditional, neutral and wood-colored décor and accessories. Don’t be afraid to employ more than one shade to highlight space, as seen here. The photo wall’s Devine Blue transitions into Devine Current, while Devine Macaw accents the room’s window seat.

Creatin g Your Own
OASIS Who says you have to pack up and travel to get away from it all? Why not create your own get away that beckons you home after a long stressful day? Here are a few ideas to create a spa-like master bath that can rival the most exclusive resorts out there. Even better, it’s private and you don’t need a reservation. By incorporating spacious showers, luxurious textures and with a little design savvy – you can create your very own master bathroom oasis.
1. Organization is essential! You don’t want to see the clutter of everyday like when you’re trying to FORGET everyday life in your oasis. Built in cabinetry featuring his and hers vanities are a great way to ensure you have a place for everything. One more thing; no glass fronted cabinet doors in the bathroom – unless you want to not only have a clean and clutter free bathroom but also clean and clutter free storage. (That sounds like a LOT of work.) 2. Spacious showers with glass walls make the bathroom seem larger by not compartmentalizing the space. Take your shower up a notch by installing multiple showerheads. Short on space? Install one of the “water fall” showerheads that are mounted to the ceiling and allow the water to cascade over you.
3.What would a spa be without a whirlpool? After a long day a jetted tub can be just what you need to unwind. Event better, you can find jetted pedestal tubs these days, which incorporate the luxury of a whirlpool with the vintage aesthetics of a pedestal tub! 4. Lighting can turn a cold, boring bathroom into a tranquil Zen inspiring getaway in an instant. Can’t afford to replace all the fixtures? Simply swap the bulbs to a lower wattage and install a dimmer switch. 5. Color is key when creating your personal oasis. Light walls will create the illusion of a larger space while darker walls will feel cozy. Blues, aquas and whites evoke a pristine even beachy atmosphere while browns, coppers and earth tones create warm, rustic feel. 6. Luxurious textures and small details are what move you from a nice bathroom to a personal oasis. Love to travel? Hang framed photos of your adventures and fondest memories. Avid reader? Have a little bookshelf with some of your favorite titles close at hand when you’re soaking in the tub. Master Bathrooms aren’t what they used to be. With a little ambition and attention to detail you can capture that relaxed, refreshed, I just left a spa feel every day with your very own master bath oasis.
