Willem’s On Main: In a Word, Delicious!
Written by Judy Gorham ast November, after 15 years, Paul Klitsie closed Ristorante Fratelli, his country Italian restaurant in the Pearl district of Portland. But there was no doubt where Paul was headed: He already had his foot in the door at Willem’s On Main in Vancouver. At Willem’s, chef Paul’s menu features local and seasonal fare created with ingredients sourced from local farmers. Willem’s dining room is bright and fresh with windows facing Main St. It widens as you go further in and has a loft up the stairs. It’s surprisingly spacious for what appears to be such a pocket-shop from the street. A few tables are fashioned from burls, each with 2 repurposed theater seats for chairs. Other tables seat larger groups and occupy a more central location. Your mood will be lifted by a nice blend of French romantic music that is neither lost in the crowd nor overpowering. The size of the menu feels just right, with something for everyone. When I recently went to Willem’s for dinner, my husband and I started with huge and delicious Cesar salads, served along-side sliced bread served with olive oil and balsamic. We shared two main courses. They both made my mouth light up! We chose pork loin served with polenta and a sliced rib eye with mashed potatoes.

The sauces on both dishes were rich in flavor, the meat was tender and prepared perfectly. I found the service at Willem’s On Main to be very friendly. Our personable waitress was willing to check with the chef to be sure she was giving the right answers to all of our questions. We never had to wait long for her attention either. She helped to make our dining experience very pleasant. The wine list is a nice surprise the choices not only good but also very adequate. After finishing our salads and dinner with wine, our dessert was almost too much! We shared a bruleed cheese cake with rhubarb sauce. It disappeared.

The Pacific Northwest Design Style What is the Pacific Northwest design style? The answer is simple, “Who cares!” As a designer working in SW Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, I can tell you that there are very few people living in the Northwest who care about trends. Northwesterners are highly independent minded folks who really want their homes to reflect their own personal sense of taste, not the current taste that Sunset Magazine or Veranda or HGTV says are the “must haves.” Right now, gray is the hot trend in neutrals, which is wonderful if you like gray. If you don’t, that certainly doesn’t mean your home can’t look 100% stylish, even without the current hot trend. I promise! If you like traditional style-great! If you like contemporary style-great! If you like the upscale lodge look-great! If you like the mid-century modern lookgreat! If you don’t have a clue what you like, then you may have an eclectic sense of style-great! My point is, your home is your haven. It isn’t the haven for anyone else, so their opinion of what they like in home décor should not matter to you. I am giving you permission to ignore your pushy neighbor’s advice or your mother’s advice when it comes to decorating your home. However, there is one caution here…husbands, don’t ignore your wife’s advice. I am a designer, not a marriage counselor! Other than your spouse’s opinion, please just be yourself! Be brave, be free-go for what you like! As a designer in the Northwest, I have to work a lot harder to make sure I can create that unique style for my client’s wonderfully varied personalities. If you look at my website you may diagnose me with a multiple personality disorder due all the different design styles on there. Luckily for me, I just have one personality, but I can put myself in the shoes of my clients and understand what design style gets them excited. The job of any good designer is to take their client’s sense of taste and style and turn it into something beautiful that the client loves and is excited to come home to each day.
