The Art of a Handwritten Note By CHUCK CAVALARIS Something happened the other day that left me speechless. The afternoon mail brought a smile and a surprise -- all because of something rarely seen these days, a handwritten thank-you card. It also said something about how happy the entire family is in their new home. After saying "wow" and waiting for a grin to subside, that got me to thinking, “Are we so busy or wrapped up in this age of instant communication with emails, tweets, and Facebook that the handwritten note has become a lost art? Has it become the Tyrannosaurus Rex of saying thanks?� Think about it: The email might go to spam, but the handwritten note is supposed to hit home. There's no doubt a beige card with you name and address in cursive will stand out in a pile of bills, junk mail, grocery store coupons, golf tees, spare change, and car keys. (Unfortunately, that's exactly how my kitchen table looks.) Real estate professionals should be the first folks to set aside 30 minutes for a personal touch. One or two letters a day could work wonders. It is the same for contractors, mortgage bankers, title companies, home inspectors, insect control specialists, landscapers, appliance sales person, flooring company, or any number of service professions. It can be as simple as, "Hey, just wanted to say thank-you for the extra effort in getting this done. I know it was difficult and appreciate everything you did. Look forward to working with you again." The handwritten note is certainly not a lost art for Peyton Manning, the former University of Tennessee quarterback and future Hall of Fame selection. Peyton was in elementary school when his mother, Olivia, instilled a trait passed down from her mother, who was a legal secretary and often penned letters. Did you know that Manning has continued to write and sign handwritten notes since grade school? Talk about something suitable for framing. He has sent dozens of letters to NFL players upon their retirement. The recent list includes center Matt Birk, receiver Donald Driver, corner back Ronde Barber and linebacker Brian Urlacher. "I don't know who qualifies for a letter,
necessarily," Manning said recently."It's probably just somebody I played against for a long time. Guys who played the game the right way." The letter former All-Pro safety John Lynch received from Manning in 2008 was attached to a case of Silver Oak wine. Although Lynch said the gift has found a home in his wine cellar and has yet to be opened, the letter is priceless. Peyton still remembers the first handwritten note he received from a coach and it was signed by Bobby Bowden of Florida State. Even if you have achieved legendary status as a person, professional athlete and celebrity endorser, thoughtfulness goes a long way. With this in mind, I am going to write a few letters this week. The recipients will include My father, Charlie: You are my hero and always will be. Thanks, Dad. Dr. Paul C. Rivard: The outstanding Podiatrist has eliminated the crippling pain in my left foot. It is mostly due to a high arch and surgically repaired ankle that has a steel plate and nine screws. (Yes, I am a metal detector's worst nightmare.) It doesn't help to have an arch that's almost high enough to drive a VW Beetle under it. Dr. Len Bellingrath: With the help of his long-time nurse, Tammy, Dr. Bellingrath was able to treat my golfer's elbow. (Dr. B said it was the worst case of non-golfer's elbow he's ever seen.) Lisa "Mickie" Clark: The excellent loan officer saved a recent deal from going kaput. It also helped a subsequent sale go through. Needless to say, we're no longer waiting to exhale. Knoxville Title Agency: A pretty good place to receive a common sense
explanation why the HUD-1 settlement statement begins on Page 2. Now that's a real head scratcher. Sid Harrell: My "old" high school buddy is a termite's worst enemy. Jack Feldman: The king of home inspectors knows how to spot a defect or potential problem. His wife, Shelby, is pretty cool, too. She even knows how to find radon. Tammy White: She knows the mortgage business inside & out and has an uncanny way with words. Along with her husband, Terry Raby, Tammy hosted a benefit golf tournament on Sept. 9 at Williams Creek to defray the cancer treatment expenses of long-time realtor & broker Mike Grebe.
