My First Bike… Summer 2018
My first bike was a twin cylinder Yamaha 100. I got into riding because my family rode. We’d take our bikes out into the pasture and ride them like motocross bikes. I followed along even though I had a street bike. I quickly trashed it. The next bike I got was a Yamaha 100 Enduro. I rode that for a while much to my mom’s dismay. There was a span of many years I didn’t have a bike. I got into drag racing for about 30 years. The only bike I had during that time was a little pit bike. When I got out of drag racing I purchased a 94 Harley Low-Rider with an evo engine. I sold the bike and thought I might be done riding forever. Spring came and Harleys would ride past where I work. I got the itch again and I bought a 99 Harley Road King which I still have today. Frank *Frank Parsley is the host of Hawg Valley Bike Rally happening May 16-19 and August 15-18 in Graham Kentucky. Admittance for the weekend is ONLY $35.

around the town with Riding season is coming upon us. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what certain pre-owned bikes are worth and what the cost may be to fix them.
Mechanic Mike
I love when a seller says “the bike’s been sitting for a couple of years”. In reality, it’s usually more like five or seven years. Or how about the sales pitch “it ran when I parked it”. I always wonder “why did you park it then?” Buying a motorcycle just because you think it’s a good deal can become very costly. Unless your fluent in motorcycle repair, a shop bill can get expensive. It’s best to know your budget and find something you like in your price range either from a dealer or an individual. Here are the things that must be inspected on a pre-owned bike. 1. Take the gas cap off and look inside. I don’t care what the outside looks like. If the inside is full of rust…don’t buy it. 2. If the battery is bad and there isn’t a kick starter, pull the side cover off or push the bike in a higher gear to make sure the motor turns over. You can also borrow a battery. You need to make sure all the electrical components work such as starter, lights and gauges. 3. Once you get the bike started, make sure there is no continuous smoking. 4. Check the tires and wheels. If the tires are cracking or dry rotted, you will need to replace them. However, if it has rusted spoke wheels…don’t buy it. It is not safe to ride. About Mechanic Mike: Mechanic Mike attended the American Motorcycle Institution in Daytona, Florida graduating in 1977. He has been a certified motorcycle mechanic for Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha for the last 39 years. PAGE PAGE 20 28

LEATHER
Got Tangles?
Follow these 5 steps to take control of your rat’s nest. 1. Shampoo: First thing’s first- clean hair is easier to work with. Forgoing our process and diving at your detangling brush will do more harm than good. Get the gunk from the road out of your hair and start with a fresh, buildup free slate. Make sure to massage the shampoo into your hair, in a downward motion. Do NOT scrub. 2. Condition: After shampooing, apply your conditioner in the same manner as your shampoo. Leave the conditioner to absorb into your hair for a few minutes. Rinse with cold water. (We know. You’re probably sunburned or tired and cold water is the devil. Trust us.) The cold water will help to hold in moisture and seal split ends, making it easier to comb through.

3. Towel: Wrap a towel around your hair and gently squeeze excess water out. Roughing up your hair, as if you were scrubbing a potato, won’t help release any water. It will only cause more tangles. 4. Products: Silkening treatments, leave-in conditioners, and detangling sprays are all great tools to help minimize your time detangling and help the health for your hair recover from the road and sun. 5. Detangling: Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush to finish the job. Be sure to start at the bottom of your hair and work your way up to the root, allowing you to tackle small portions of the tangle rather than plowing through the whole massive roadblock of hair. After you’ve finished detangling, style (or don’t style) as you desire. PAGE PAGE24 20

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Just across the blue bridge is a trailer company that looks out for bikes. They offer everything you could possibly want even customizing it for you! There’s often misconceptions about trailers and what you exactly need. We got to sit down with James of WholesaleTrailers Now and discuss everything he has to offer bikers.
WTN offers a “Toy Carrier.” It is the MOST aerodynamic trailer on the market. It’s a hard cast plastic shell meant for a single motorcycle. They’re currently working on production of similar models for spyders and trikes. James has many sizes of trailers with “motorcycle packages” which include D rings, motorcycle chocks so you can haul 1-2 motorcycles plus additional gear. You have to come see the tetraPOD! It’s an enclosed trailer. It’s the only enclosed trailer that can be flipped into a boat in less than a minute. It’s US and Coast Guard approved. It can be launched, pulled behind an ATV/UTV and has a possible attachment for use as a hunting blind. This is the swiss army knife of trailers! If you’d like something customized, they can do that! Customization of trailers comes down to the buyers personal needs. Windows, and full sink packages, are just a few of the customizations WTN offers. Customization can usually be completed in 6-12 weeks. No matter what your trailer needs are, James at Wholesale Trailers Now N can hook you up! PAGE 27
