Many of these communities are single family homes, cottages, patio homes, condominiums and townhomes. They offer clubhouse with fitness center, pool, spa and other amenities.

SENIOR APARTMENTS offer all the amenities of regular apartment communities but have a minimum age requirement. In some communities it is 55 years of age, in others it is 62. Many of these apartments offer reduced rent for those that qualify, they are identified as “affordable”. There are also market rate apartments that mirror the rental rates of standard apartment communities. Both types of senior apartments offer many amenities such as pools, community rooms, and lots of activities. They do not offer meals. INDEPENDENT/RETIREMENT WITH SERVICE COMMUNITIES

or Retirement Communities offer older adults congregate housing that is generally replete with many amenities and social activities and services. Some independent living communities offer health care services, and can accommodate older residents with chronic health problems. Most communities offer restaurant-style meals, frequent events and country club style furnishings. They offer exercise rooms and planned activities, as well as resident clubs and interest groups.

ASSISTED LIVING/PERSONAL CARE HOMES/SENIOR LIVING

communities that offer help with all aspects of daily activities which include but are not limited to the administration of medication or individual assistance with and supervision of self-administered medications and essential activities or daily living such as eating, bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting.

MEMORY CARE COMMUNITIES specialize in the unique needs of seniors who have been

given a medical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other recognized forms of memory-related disorders. This can be a special unit or a free-standing community. Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain, results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. Other senior living environments may be appropriate for residents in early, or even mid, stages of the disease. However, unless they have a specialized dementia unit, transfer to another facility will be required as the disease progresses.

SKILLED NURSING (Nursing Homes) / PHYSICAL REHABILITATION COMMUNITIES offer hospital-like attention in an institutional atmosphere. These facilities offer 24-hour

supervision. The amount of additional services, upkeep, food, and the structure of facilities can vary from nursing home to nursing home. They also may specialize in short term or acute nursing care, intermediate care or long term skilled nursing care.

REHAB comprehensive rehabilitation services include inpatient and outpatient treatment designed to restore and strengthen abilities. HOSPICE care may be provided in the home or a senior care facility. Services can include pain management and a variety of emotional, spiritual and physical support issues HOME CARE includes both companies that provide licensed health care services in the home and companies that provide medical and non-medical assistance with such tasks as bathing, dressing, meal preparation and transportation.
