Prepare your
home. Prepare your self! Preparing your home for sale requires a check list of all the important considerations which make a home attractive to a potential Purchaser. Fall is here and the presentation for this beautiful Season is exciting and very important. Seasonal planting, color and the maintenance of shrubs is critical. Especially important is keeping debris from outdoor living and enjoyment areas, such as decks, and pools cleaned. Decorating for the Season in a tasteful manor is important but try not to overdo as your efforts may distract from the finer points of your home. Similar to getting you home and grounds ready for the fall and winter selling season, maintaining our health is very important, and as Shawna Anderson points out;
“Baby it’s cold outside” When the temperature drops, so can your motivation to get outside and get moving. According to polls, ¾ of exercisers have a hard time staying motivated in the winter. It gets dark early and may feel too cold to go to the gym or go for a walk. Keeping to a consistent exercise routine however can help avoid holiday weight gain and reduce stress. Here are some ideas for remaining active and staying safe!
Get out and play! If you can't seem to muster the energy to work out this time of year, try "playing" instead. Take up a winter sport such as skiing, hiking, racquetball or indoor rock
climbing. These sports allow you to get several hours of vigorous exercise each week while you are playing indoors or out.
Get creative at home. Getting to the gym can be more of a hassle when it is cold outside, but never use bad weather as an excuse to miss your daily exercise. Instead, work out at home, where's it's cozy and warm. Obtain a new workout DVD, invest in a new piece of fitness equipment or try a different exercise regimen like yoga.
Stay Hydrated. Sweating sends signals to the brain that you need to hydrate. During cold weather workouts it is hard to break into a sweat. Therefore, it may prevent you from perceiving that you need water. Make it a habit to hydrate every 2 hours and avoid excess caffeine.
Dress for Success! Dress in layers that you can remove as soon as you start to sweat and then put back on as needed. Your first layer should be a thin layer of synthetic material, such as polypropylene, that draws sweat away from your body. Avoid cotton, which stays wet next to your skin. Your second layer should be fleece or wool for insulation. Top this with a waterproof, breathable outer layer. On very cold days consider wearing a face mask or scarf to warm the air before it enters your lungs. To avoid frostbite, wear a thin pair of gloves under a pair of heavier gloves or mittens lined with wool or fleece. Don the mittens or gloves before your hands become cold and then remove them if your hands begin to sweat. Considering buying exercise shoes a half-size or one size larger than usual to allow for thick thermal socks or an extra pair of regular socks. Lastly, don't forget a hat or headband to protect your ears, which also are vulnerable to frostbite.
Warm up! Before venturing outdoors, warm up doing light aerobics for 10 minutes…indoors!. Warming up cold muscles before vigorous exercise can help your to avoid injury and be alert when it is icy or dark outside. Just remember to find a way to stay active, stay safe and enjoy! Oh my aching joints! Guidelines for living with arthritis.
It’s that time of year when the weather changes and people begin to get out and get moving. However, for some, moving around may be very painful due to arthritis. According to the CDC, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and is a serious and painful joint disease that affects more than 27 million Americans. Osteoarthritis affects mainly the hands, knees and hips. Healthcare providers are no longer encouraging their patients with osteoarthritis to “rest their joints”. Instead patients are being encouraged to get moving. Regular physical activity is just as important for individuals with arthritis as it is for all children and adults. However, individuals with arthritis are often less active due to pain and stiffness. Quite often, they are unsure of how much activity or what activity is safe for them to perform.

Experts recommend the following activity guidelines if you have arthritis, are over the age of 65 or have other chronic medical conditions:
AEROBIC EXERCISE: You should perform some type of aerobic activity such as walking, pool walking or stationary bicycle for 30 minutes each day. This can be broken up into 10 minute intervals if needed. Inactivity should be avoided if possible; however, you should alter your activity level based on your arthritis symptoms.
STRENGTHENING: You should also incorporate muscle strengthening activities at least 2 days per week. These activities can be performed in sitting and should incorporate light weights or resistance bands and progress by increasing repetitions instead of increasing weight. BALANCE: Balance is very important for people who have arthritis. It is recommended that you should do activities that promote balance 3 days per week. An example of some activities that can be performed in the home are standing on one leg, backward walking, sidestepping and heel-to-toe walking.
FLEXIBILITY: Lastly, flexibility is an integral part of maintaining joint health. You can perform gentle stretches to all major joints in sitting or standing. Flexibility helps to maintain the joint range of motion which allows increased movement with less pain. Ask your doctor before embarking on a new fitness regime. If you are not sure how to get started then you may consult with a trained healthcare provider, such as a physical therapist, or certified exercise professional who can help you on your path to better joint health.
