How You Can Take Control of Your Credit Score By Courtney Soinski Both homeowners and real estate professionals know how important it is to have a good credit score. You may wonder how much of an impact it can have on your life - well, we're here to answer that question. A good credit score will mean that you qualify for the best loans, rates and terms. This great advantage will gradually save you money through reduced rates over the lifespan of a loan. Gerri Deweiler, a Director of Consumer Education, sums it up perfectly: "An excellent credit score equals money in your pocket."

As an example, a credit score of 620 or below would mean that the person looking to borrow would be categorized as a "sub-prime" borrower, whereas a credit score of 720 would mean that the borrower would be eligible for more favorable loan conditions. Here are some simple tips to repair your credit score:
1. Get a credit card from a major company. Before you go crazy, it is important to note that using a credit card and keeping a balance on one are two totally different matters. Running up a bill that you don't pay in full won't help you build credit. That being said, this tip takes discipline, but it's an easy way to improve a poor credit score if you pay your card off monthly. We suggest using it for things like gas that you will pay off on a monthly basis.
3. Be patient.

4. Check your credit score.
If you don't trust yourself to use a credit card wisely or just don't want one, then you should get a prepaid credit card. This gives you a way to use a credit card without the temptation of running up debt. This will only allow you to spend the amount you have placed on the card and no more.
It is very important that you understand that your credit report is accurate. So, checking the three credit bureaus on a regular basis is wise. These include Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You want to know if anything incorrect is on your credit report so you can fix the situation before it damages your credit.

Take a breather and listen to what expert economists have to say about mortgage rates, housing starts, and new household creations… Looking back at our economy during the big housing boom, the U.S. was producing 1.4 million additional households every year. In the aftermath of the Great Recession, there is a significant pent-up demand to form households and even to build homes. At least 3 million fewer households formed over the past five years than would normally have been expected. During this period, many college graduates were forced to double-up or move in with their parents. However, we have come an incredibly long way since then. Over the past year, there has been a significant revival of single-family home production.

What does this mean for 2014? Housing will continue its climb toward higher ground this year. According to NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe, consumer confidence has returned to pre-recession levels and year-over-year household formations are on the rise. In fact, there are now an average of 620,000 households compared to just 500,000 during the housing downturn. There will be an upward pressure on mortgage rates this year, but don't worry - it's not enough to harm housing affordability. As mortgage rates gradually rise, fewer homeowners will look to refinance. Also, purchase originations are expected to increase as the overall housing market strengthens. “As we move into the 2014 home buying season, it will be a market dominated by home buying originations rather than refinance originations,” says Frank Nothaft, vice president and chief economist at Freddie Mac. “This will be the first time since 2000 that purchase originations will dominate the market.” For more information, visit www.nahb.org.
