Accessorizing Not Just for the Runway

One of my favorite reality television shows is Project Runway where fashion designers compete to deliver their unique design perspective while incorporating a randomly selected design challenge. The challenge may include anything from designing and delivering a concept for a basic cocktail dress, to a couture or Avant-garde evening gown. Whether one or the other, it is always important to create a visually appealing garment and the first step is choosing the right colors and fabrics. To have a completed look for the runway, makeup, hair and accessories must be executed in a way that complements the overall design. This concept for adding accessories is also important when creating a successful room design. A room design cannot be viewed as complete without the use of accessories. Accessories provide a space with enrichment and embellishment. They also help to identify the intended use of the space and the character of its inhabitants.
are telling, what new accessories can be added to support the theme of the room? If you are starting fresh, consider defining moments in your life for which you have mementos that can support milestones to add to your room’s story or theme.
Before any runway show, a designer must create a full collection of garments that tell a story and also look cohesive. To be “ready for the runway” the garment is not complete until the appropriate styling and accessories are added. The method for accessorizing for a fashion runway show has the similar characteristics of accessorizing for a home design. Your home should be cohesive and have continuity. In a runway show, one garment in the collection should introduce the next garment in color, style and theme. This works the same for interior design; one room should introduce the next. Take your living room, for example. What is the focus for your living room? Looking at your current accessories, what’s the story you
When planning accessories for a room, select accessories appropriate for the purpose of the room. For example, in conversational areas, add accessories that promote conversation and interest. These items may include a travel collection, antiques, family heirlooms or even abstract paintings. One technique for choosing the right accessories is to create a theme for your room. This theme could be based on a favorite color, historical era, texture or another key element that ties your room and accessories together. For example, if you have a beige, monochromatic

Another example would be to use shiny metallic accessories for a more modern look. Texture is important for providing the look and feel of a certain material that can bring contrast to your fabric selections. An example is adding pillows or draperies with high texture such as a luxury silk or

This provides visual interest. Fashion design and interior design use parallel methods for delivering a complete design. Take for example, the classic “little black dress.” This garment would be viewed similarly in home fashion as a simple monochromatic room that is adaptable to many colors. A monochromatic room design uses only one color as the base for the design, so any splash of color would add interest and make a statement. The simple black dress is used as a base or backdrop and the added items create a statement. The monochromatic room is versatile which makes it much easier to change the color palette of accessories. For example, pairing a boldly colored statement print with the simple monochromatic design would offer emphasis to the accessory. Simple accessory items are used sparingly as to not distract from the focus color. Whether your style is romantic and dramatic or simple and sophisticated, accessorizing is the design step to pull off a favorite look and feel in your room design. To draw attention away from areas you do not want to highlight, choose neutralcolored or monotone accessories that are styled simply. overall color palette. For areas you would like to highlight, consider choosing one dramatic accessory to use as a focal point. The focal point will draw the eye to that area. In larger spaces, choose accessories that balance your room proportions. Consider accessories that can stand alone without the support of other items. A room containing heavy patterned fabrics and furniture detail can be compared to the look of a luxurious evening gown. The scale of your room accessories is important too. Similar to on the runway, when designing with patterns, simple accessories are the best choice. Accessories and embellishments that are too busy will make prints look less desirable. The same goes for using ruffled, embroidered or embellished accessories with pattern. Use understated accessories to keep the emphasis on your patterned furniture pieces. It is not necessary to over embellish, but to embellish with purpose so that it doesn’t distract or contradict with an already heavily detailed space. Patterned furniture and furniture that has busy prints can be simply tamed by adding solids that blend. Adding luxury does not mean that you need to over accessorize; you can achieve luxury by choosing solid fabrics with texture and sheen. Accessories are very important because just as in fashion, it can tone-up or tone-down the overall final look and feel. Simply put, your accessory selection
can make or break your design. When choosing room accessories to blend with your room, consider the color, scale and style of the pieces, and keep the room’s functionality in mind. An important rule for adding accessories to your design is simply not to over-accessorize, which can create clutter. Begin with larger accessories such as floor vases, area rugs, accent chairs and artwork, then choose areas to highlight with larger accessories. This may be an empty corner or neglected wall space. You can draw attention and create dramatic impact by choosing your larger accessory items first. Afterward, fill in smaller accessories on table tops and bookshelves. If you don’t have any continuity in your design, try purchasing several accessories in a similar theme but in varying sizes that can be grouped together. Accessories should delight the eye and serve purpose in your space whether visually or functionally. Using these key parallels for accessorizing in fashion design, you will be well on your way to a runway-ready home worthy of an audience.
