Beyond the plywood base and the underlayment (the waterproof barrier that protects the underlying wood), are the shingles or tile. The roof is battered day in and day out, so the list of potential issues is a long one. Maintaining clean gutters is a good starting point; otherwise, water can build up and seep under the shingles, causing water damage to the plywood underneath.
