SECRETS TO PLAYROOM ORGANIZATION Throughout our daily lives, we often find ourselves with a fairly organized home. The kitchen is in order. The beds stay made most of the time. Our living room remains inviting for drop-by visits. However, as those with children may attest to, the playroom somehow stays the “Bermuda Triangle” of the house, confusing and messy enough to get lost in. Here are some secrets to getting that playroom under control.
PURGE IS THE WORD
Begin with four boxes: Keep, donate, trash, and other room. The toys that are broken, throw away without question. A toy that never held the interest of your child needs to be given away. Bath toys, clothing, the stolen remote control, or outdoors toys need to be put back in their proper places. If something is being held on to simply for nostalgia, i.e. little Johnny’s very first teddy bear, create a memory box or a special shelf for that item.
QUALITY NOT QUANTITY
Ask yourself: “Which toys does my child gravitate towards, and which toys does my child get bored with?” Perhaps not everything should be given away, but consider rotating the play things to create fresh interest. A clear bin or two can be filled with the less appealing items, labeled, and put into a closet. On a bi-weekly or monthly basis, switch out the playroom stash for a re-newed sense of playtime.
LABEL, LABEL, LABEL
With so many different types of things to keep track of, it’s easy to become confused about what goes where. For the things that are keeping their permanent space in the playroom, designate containers and label them accordingly. For those with pre-readers in the home, not only include the word, but the picture of the item too. This serves a dual purpose of word recognition and getting toys back to the right spot. TAME THE LOOSE PIECES
Things like board games and puzzles can easily get their pieces separated. Once just a few pieces are lost, the whole thing can no longer be used, so it’s important to keep these together. For puzzles, try framing the box cover and storing the puzzle pieces on the back of the frame. This serves as both decor and a practical way to keep it all together and up off the floor. For games, take them out of the box and store them in identical, easily stackable containers. Keep puzzles and board games out of reach, so you can keep track of what is being used. Be sure to establish the “one at a time” rule.
HIDE IT AWAY
Curtains can be used to cover and uncover the monstrosity of a toy shelf that sits in the room. Containers under a bed can be slid in after use. A bench with cube storage can be great as a reading nook, and even double as a bookshelf. A small ottoman that your child can sit on, that also has room for dress up clothes or other toys, will help contain the mess that no one will know is there. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while for your children to understand the new system. They will get the hang of it. On the other hand, if the mess stays messy, take a deep breath, and en-joy your little ones because as we all know, “they grow up so fast!”

What may seem like a grueling (and may I add, required) process does not have to live up to its reputation. As a matter of fact, learning these starter tips and facts may help you get signed up for what can be a financially sound decision and, if the time ever comes, keep the claims process smooth.
Don’t Skimp on Shopping With so many options out there, it would be a shame to miss out on a good deal solely in an attempt to “get it over with”. There are many different homeowner’s insurance providers out there competing for your business. A good starting point is your vehicle’s insurance provider. Several companies offer multiple policy discounts. The more policies that are held with a company, often times there are more discounts to be had. Also, check out the reviews through leading firms such as Standard and Poor, or Weiss, and the reviews from customers like you.
Keeping Costs Down Like we mentioned above, one way to lower costs is to carry multiple policies. Adding smoke detectors in your home and maintaining a connected security system can also lower premiums. The location of the home matters, too, so you may want to keep that in mind when beginning the home shopping process. With all insurance policies, selecting a higher deductible will also keep those annual premiums more enticing, but this means that you will pay out of pocket for anything small. Finally, the eventual pay off of your mortgage will lower the premium, as well.
What it Covers Be aware of what your policy covers. Earthquakes, flooding, tornadoes, and fire are just a few of the perils that could visit your home. Your policy comes in a package of coverages including, but not limited to, the house and its related structures, personal possessions, loss of use of the house, personal liability, and medical payments. Keep in mind, if your damage or loss is caused by a natural disaster that isn’t covered, then your claim won’t count. This means, for example, if you are in a high risk flood zone, then you will need to be sure that flooding is covered in your policy.
The Importance of Customer Service No discount can outweigh bad customer service. A smooth claims process is of the utmost importance when your home is unlivable or when any sort of calamity has hit the household. We revisit the idea of reviewing the customer service of each company from which you obtain a quote. It’s a great idea to talk with friends, family, and neighbors to see what sort of experiences they have had with their provider. A good review from a trusted friend goes a long way!

The PSYCHOLOGY Behind Paint Colors
You look around your home and decide you need a refreshing change. Painting any room in the home is a sure fire way to make it feel new and clean! Before you run to the hardware store and grab the first color that tickles your fancy, put some thought into the color - and some emotion, too. As a matter of fact, proponents of what is referred to as “color psychology” believe that the color of a room in the home is more than just a way to tie in the throw pillows. It’s a matter of emotional wellbeing. So what’s the right hue for you?
CONSIDER THE ROOM’S PURPOSE
The intended function of a room is a heavy deciding factor on which colors to use. Ask yourself, “What mood do we want this color to set?” Rooms such as an industrious kitchen, welltreaded dining room, or a bustling living room could go in a direction of colors that are thought to draw out conversation, appetites, and energy. According to WebMD.com, the color red seems to stimulate appetite and may be a good choice for a dining room or kitchen, as is yellow. Also, earth tones such as brown or tan stimulate social gatherings because they are warm and inviting, and a great choice for a living room. Then there’s the flip side of stimulation – relaxation. For What mood do we a bedroom, stick with cool want this color to set? tones like blues, greens, and lavenders. These are thought to reduce stress and promote sleep. Red on the wall of a child’s room could go as far as to lead to restless sleep, so sacrifice the childhood character decor in favor of a cooler hue.

Lighting can have a great effect on how the hue is perceived once it’s on the wall. We see several different types of lighting in a house, ranging from fluorescent, incandescent, and halogen bulbs, to natural sunlight. Depending on the color that the light emits, the paint will either absorb or reflect the light in different ways, thus varying the paint’s shade to the human eye. A color can vary greatly in appearance in two different rooms that receive two different types of light. For this reason, it is suggested to observe the sun’s pattern and take notes before making a decision. For example, if the sunlight flows from the north, this will be a cooler tone of natural light in a room. On the other hand, if the sunlight flows into a room from the west, you
could end up with an overwhelming warm tone if you’ve painted your wall red or orange.
PERSONAL STYLE MATTERS
If color psychology isn’t your cup of tea, then stick with what’s pleasing to your eye. Try to pick a color Take your current decor into that pulls out favorite consideration.
