f you are reading this, you are holding in your hand a copy of the first printing of “Matters of the Home” magazine, The Villages Edition. We are looking forward to bringing you valuable information regarding what matters most to Villages homeowners. We are also looking for feedback and suggestions from you, our readers about what information you would most like to see in future editions. We will be regularly featuring informative articles from area specialists on topics that affect 55+ residents in the area, charities and local events, and always a few pages of homes for sale in the centerfold of the magazine. You see, the owners of “Matters of the Home” are also the owners of RE/MAX Premier Realty in The Villages, and we have so much information to share with The Villages residents, we felt we could write a book, so we decided to create this magazine to bring helpful information to you on a regular basis. Throughout the pages you will also see advertisers who help pay for the printing and mailing of this magazine. These advertisers are companies that we use personally and feel comfortable recommending to anyone. We are often asked by homeowners and homebuyers to recommend a particular service. We do business with a great variety of vendors, so if you have a specific need for a service, just give us a call and we will be happy to help you find someone reputable. Many of our vendors will also be spotlighted on our website and on our facebook page from time to time, so feel free to visit there often. For our first edition we also decided to highlight some local charities, as we soon came to realize that Villages residents are a very giving group of people. We hope you enjoy reading our magazine and we look forward to bringing you a lot more helpful information and value in future editions. If you need to sell your home and want to see it advertised in this magazine, please call me at RE/MAX Premier Realty, 352-753-2029, and I will personally recommend one of our top agents who specialize in your specific area of The Villages. You may also visit us on our facebook page, www.facebook.com/mattersofthehome, or go to our website, www.mattersofthehome.com, and email me at nancy@mattersofthehome.com. (Our current distribution is 40,000 homes in the Villages and 5000 extra copies being distributed to area businesses and buyers moving into The Villages area.)

Guardian ad Litem Program & Volunteer Opportunities An Interview With.... Wanda Vogler Volunteer of the Year Award Recipient for the 5th Circuit of the State of Florida Guardian ad Litem Program MOH: Tell us a little about yourself. Wanda: I am originally from Alabama, but spent most of my life in the Dayton, OH area. I graduated from the Univ. of Dayton and The Ohio State Univ. I retired in 2002 after 18 years as Director of the Student Research Program for the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education (a consortium of colleges and universities). Prior to that, I was a recruiting specialist for a community college, career counselor at a technical school, an adult education coordinator and high school teacher. MOH: For people who may be unfamiliar with the Guardian ad Litem Program and its volunteers, tell us what the program does for Florida’s abused and neglected children? Wanda: The Guardian ad Litem program is a partnership of community advocates and professional staff providing a powerful voice on behalf of Florida’s abused and neglected children. When a child is thrust into the legal system because of abuse, neglect or dependency, a trained GAL volunteer researches the child's home and community situation. That volunteer acts as the child's advocate in court, giving a judge information on the child's situation and making recommendations for the child's best interests including a safe, permanent home. In the 5th Circuit (Marion/Citrus/Lake/Sumter/Hernando) as of 6/30/2012 there were 1,823 children under court supervision for allegations of abuse. The GAL Program was appointed to almost 80% of those children (1,445). Subsequently, there are around 378 children who are in need of an advocate. We have 600 volunteers available to serve as advocates in the 5 county area. MOH: What is the most rewarding part about being a volunteer for abused and neglected children? Wanda: When you see a child get placed in a permanent home, whether it is with their parents or someone else, and you know that they are going to be safe and loved.
4
MOH: As we all know, being an advocate for abused and neglected children can be heartbreaking at times, how do you manage to maintain a positive outlook, amidst the negative? Wanda: I am a problem solver by nature, so when I have a complex case, I look at it as a lot of problems that need solving. I know that things aren't always going to go the way I would like, but I also know that I have done everything that I can do to influence the outcome in a positive way. The other thing I try to remember is that I am not the only one who is involved in trying to have the best outcome for the child.
MOH: How would someone looking to volunteer get started with GAL? Wanda: Get in touch with our trainer, Lynn Sennett at 352-274-5231. She can get them started with the application process and enrolled in a pre-service training class.
MOH: Is there any other information that would you like people to know about the GALP? Wanda: If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity that gives you more than you give, being a GAL could be for you. You will be introduced to some of the most fantastic people you will ever meet, the kids, GALP staff and fellow GALs. For me, I get to know children who need a voice that may have never had that. As rewarding as the relationship is that I have with the children, being a GAL is more than that. Because I am a GAL, I do some writing, some teaching and am constantly challenged to learn new things to be a more effective advocate. It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my community.
The reward to being a volunteer? Not only can you make an immediate impact....ensuring a child has a voice and receives what they need while in foster care, you can pave a positive path to a child's future of hope and emotional security. After all, making a positive difference in the life of a child is one definition of legacy. With great challenges can come great reward.

“We’re Celebrating 30 years in 2012!” The Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a long and proud history of dedicated service to its community. Over the years we have worked tirelessly leading the charge to end animal cruelty, pet overpopulation, rescuing all types of animals in need and placing them into lifelong caring homes, responding to disasters whether natural or man-made, assisting low income residents pet needs, all while operating without a shelter. Founded in 1982, our volunteer-based non- profit charitable organization since 1995, operates solely with contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations. The time has come for Sumter County, FL to have a much overdue animal shelter allowing our HS/SPCA sufficient space to provide homeless animals a temporary safe haven until placed in a loving permanent home. Our goal to construct a state-ofthe-art “green” facility will allow us to serve more animals and pet owners throughout the Central Florida area. Every animal deserves a chance at happiness. Please show your commitment to this worthy investment in our community. Celebrate our 30th anniversary by donating to this local dedicated non-profit. Where there's a WILL, there's a way! Together, we can make the next 30+ years even greater! Become a member, stay tuned for announcements via our website, newsletter & Facebook on what we're doing! During the planning of our first “Monthly Showcase” article, the writers & staff were completely unaware of how their lives would be changed, simply by visiting Operation Shoebox. Operation Shoebox is an organization that was created as a morale booster for our troops overseas and to express our love and appreciation for their sacrifices made each day. Operation Shoebox is the origination of Mary Harper, who began her work in 2003 in Belleview, Florida.
8
Upon our arrival at the Lake Miona Recreation Center, we met Mrs. Janet Oliver, the Director of Volunteer Services, who was our tour guide through the vast array of volunteers, tables, sewing machines, and various other necessities needed to pull off such an enormous feat. We watched as the 200-500 volunteers hand wrote Christmas cards and letters, sewed Christmas stockings and “ditty bags”, neatly packaged food and personal care items, along with so much more. Our staff members, Kelly Barthlow and Kim Ashcraft were in awe of what they were seeing, the love and care was evident on each face in the room.

Operation Shoebox relies solely on donations from the community for the supplies needed to send these care packages. Last year, Operation Shoebox spent over $260,000 on postage alone. Each package contains many items, but it’s not merely the items that mean the most to our troops, it’s the connection and warmth they feel when they receive a package from someone back home, who is thinking about them and who appreciates their day-to-day sacrifices. At a time when there are so many concerns about our economy and our daily struggles, these volunteers are generous enough to give their time and talent to do whatever they can to reach out and connect with our soldiers, with whom they may never meet.
There are many ways to help Operation Shoebox continue their extraordinary work. Businesses and individuals can donate non-perishable foods, newspapers (and the plastic bags they are delivered in), stationary items, Christmas cards, fabric and sewing materials, and many more items. Visit their website at www.OperationShoebox.com for more information on their commitment to our troops and what you can do to help. By visiting their website you can also purchase cards hand made by our wounded warriors and a portion of the proceeds go to Operation Shoebox. “Like” them on Facebook to stay up to date on their events and community calendar. If you would like to volunteer contact Mary Harper at 352-307-6723, or stop by the Lake Miona Recreation Center at 1526 Buena Vista Boulevard, The Villages, Florida 32162, on a Monday, between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. They are there 50 weeks a year!

Busy-Ness as Usual in a TEAMing Real Estate Office
By T. Faye
Y
ou know life can be a funny thing; in fact, very funny sometimes, especially within the walls of our TEAMing real estate office. And a true TEAM we have. I don’t see one “I” in it. We love it that way. I’m still tickled about this incident which happened several months ago – It was a typical weekday… I should say “atypical” weekday, which is typical for our office – I answered the phone for the bazillionth time in my best chipper voice, “Good afternoon. Thank you for calling RE/MAX Premier Realty. How may I direct your call please?”
“I’m looking for a home,” he told he or she can be connected me, after stating his name. specifically to one of our agents. If not, then I introduce the caller to I said, “You’re looking for a our on-duty Floor Agent. home? Fantastic! You’ve called the right place. Just let me get a As it was, I transferred the call little information from you, and to our Floor Agent, a former Tool I’ll get you to the right person.” and Die Engineer. I was in earshot of the conversation, only hearing bits and pieces.
“...Sometimes you’re the bug and sometimes you’re the windshield!....”
Of crucial importance in a real estate office is utmost fairness. Our Realtors work very hard on behalf of their home sellers and home buyers, and they spend a lot of advertising dollars to help “Oh, hi,” was the response from them shine. I ask enough basic the other end of the phone line. questions to quickly determine if
“What size home are you looking for? How many square feet? [pause] What?” our agent chuckled. “I’ll transfer you back to our Front Office Coordinator.” I picked up the call for the second time and burst out laughing when the caller explained that he was indeed “looking for a home.” However, the “home” he was looking for was a great real estate office he could join as an active Realtor. He did

join our TEAM, and we both still laugh about that funny introductory conversation. Now, over fifty amazing people call our Villages office “home.” Another of our agents responded cheerfully and candidly this week to a congratulatory email I sent him for yet another great success in closing a sale. His response was, “Sometimes you’re the bug and sometimes you’re the windshield!” How true. I see it all: Triumphs and disappointments, high sailing and what may feel temporarily like a grounded airplane, happy times and frustrations, all common to every person, in every walk of life, in every business. But what I see that makes such a difference at RE/MAX Premier is the common bond of compassion, support, and caring our TEAM has for one another. We have a definite energy here. We have mourned the loss of loved ones and welcomed babies born. We have rallied to lift up the spirit of ones suffering from accidents or illness. We’ve celebrated long term marriages within our walls. We have cookouts throughout the year and celebrate holidays, where the fabulous “secret ingredient” bratwursts provided over the years by two of our Realtors are an absolute must! Many of our agents have been with RE/MAX for many years. Some have left to explore other avenues—and returned to us convinced this is the right place to be. If I were to describe our amazing folks in terms of music and color, I would say we have a vibrant, symphonic kaleidoscope—an array of fascinating, intelligent personalities—with so many interesting backgrounds, experiences, and talents weaved like thread into the tapestry we call our TEAM.

backgrounds and all bring something unique and interesting to the fold. Many have been successful business owners, are great parents, avid golfers, fishermen, equestrians, artisans, are productive church members, professional stagers, and are active volunteers in many community affairs, such as The Children’s Miracle Network and the Humane Society. If that doesn’t beat the band, we even have singers and musicians who are excellent enough to be professional. Recently, I had the privilege of watching an amazing transaction, starting with the introduction of our on-duty Floor agent to her customers, and concluding at the closing table with the purchase of their dream home. In this particular case, the customers have special needs, as the husband and wife are deaf.
“...It seems I have developed the necessary skill to do 80 things simultaneously and succinctly. ....” Our agent, who is also an attorney, showed great patience and compassion, and gave all the extra time and care needed. Her innovative approach to communicate effectively with them, and the help she gave them to overcome many obstacles (including the need to sell their home before they bought another), resulted in a very happy ending for all at our office.
productive, with many continuous home listings and ongoing sales. Our three conference rooms are always booming, be there a closing, or an agent helping a customer’s needs, using the computer. With top notch trainings twice a week, and weekly Lunch and Learns, something innovative and productive is always taking place—a steady flow of opportunity and education. Recently, one of our Realtors sauntered up to the counter at my office and nonchalantly said in a deadpan tone, “I came into this world with nothing … and so far, I still have most of it left.” [author: Spencer Homan] We both laughed heartily, though I kept doing what I was doing on the computer without skipping a beat—a skill necessary for our fast paced environment. It seems I have developed the necessary skill to do 80 things simultaneously and succinctly. But I wonder what would happen if I had 81 things to do at the same time. Well, all I know is that if my head spun completely off my neck and rolled down the hallway, first we would all laugh about it. Then our agents would run and get it for me, help me screw it back on my neck, and be extremely loving, patient and kind—a mutual feeling I have for them. Then we might laugh about it some more. If you wonder what has nine brains, three hearts, and eight legs, I would like to say it’s me, because that would definitely be helpful here at our busy office. But hard as I try, I can’t possibly measure up to the magnificent octopus.
If there is an ‘on season’ and an ‘off season’ to the year, I’m just too “You need what? How many— busy to notice a difference, as we and by when?” seem to be in ‘on season’ year round, not just the fall and winter Please excuse me. It’s time to be months when our northern an octopus again. We love it that Our Realtors have varying friends arrive. Our office is highly way.

What’s the BUZZ about Social Media?
Twitter. YouTube.
Facebook.
Pinterest.
These are all examples of social media, and I bet as soon as you hear these words, you can add at least another three sites to the list off the top of your head. But what is social media? The best definition I’ve found comes from Ron Jones, CEO of Symetri Internet Marketing: "Social media essentially is a category of online media where people are talking, participating, sharing, networking, and bookmarking online." For us, here in The Villages, it means we’re “hanging out” on-line at some of our favorite places and with our favorites groups of people. Whether you follow the entertainment schedule posted daily by The Villages Daily Sun, take a peek at the specials at Gators Dockside, or browse the photos that were taken at your big club event last weekend: Facebook is the place to be! This doesn’t even include our Google searches, Amazon purchases, or perusing YouTube for a great how-to video. Social media allows us to be connected to the world in a broad way and taking advantage of these resources, and of the opportunities for world wide communication enhances our lives beyond measure. Fifteen years ago, would we have dreamed of using Skype to interact with friends and family in other states or countries? How about learning the language of your teenaged grandchild via their Facebook page?
Believe it or not, Baby Boomers and mature adults are currently the fastest growing dynamic of social media users in the world. In-the-know Villagers are using social media as a tool in their daily lives not only for social-living but for on-going education, and researching new services and products. Business savvy Villagers know that interacting with their favorite restaurants, gift shops, and service providers via social media is like giving a personal endorsement and is invaluable promotion for those business owners.
Social media: fun, functional, and even educational. No matter how much, or little we use it we can agree that it’s added value to our lives in more ways than one. - Tonya Tallulah Morris
Are you a part of this Social Tech Revolution? Would you like to get started or delve into a new area of the web, like Pinterest or Twitter? ReMax Premier Realty of The Villages will be offering hands on learning sessions free to Villages residents throughout the Fall and Winter.
