ESTATE PLANNING FOR CANADIANS What You Need to Know By Julie Achtermeier
While it may be an unpleasant topic to broach with loved ones, every Canadian should take time to plan their estate in the event of their death. Losing a loved one is traumatic, but it is even more traumatic to pick up the pieces once they’re gone, especially if they haven’t done any planning. Planning ahead can alleviate a great deal of stress for your family. Here are some key areas to start with: LEAVE A WILL A will is a legal document that provides instructions as to how you want your estate to be divided once you pass on. It includes what you own and what you owe. Although you are not legally required to prepare a will, without one your family may lose control of how the estate is to be divided among surviving family. The province or territory you live in will have its own laws as to how to manage your estate after you’re gone. It’s always a good idea to seek professional legal counsel when creating a will. A lawyer has the expertise to ensure documents are prepared and witnessed properly. The costs for a basic will are only a few hundred dollars and well worth the investment. During the
creation of your will, ensure you have named an executor or estate representative. This is the person who will manage your estate after you’re gone. You may name anyone as your executor, and you may name more than one person - for example, if you have more than one child, you may want to make all children joint executors. Along with naming an executor of your estate, you should also appoint an executor to make medical decisions on your behalf, should you become disabled or incapacitated. Once your will is created, review it often. Ensure it reflects your current wishes, especially after a significant life event like having a child or losing a spouse.
PRE-PLAN YOUR FUNERAL To ease the burden of funeral planning for loved ones, you can plan your funeral while you are still in good health, and pre-pay for your funeral service. Funerals can be very stressful and expensive. Preparing and pre-paying for your funeral will ensure that your loved ones aren’t responsible for this expense and also gives you control to decide what sort of funeral you would like. The laws about funerals differ by province, territory and municipality so be sure to understand the requirements in your area. GIVE MONETARY GIFTS OR TRANSFER PROPERTY BEFORE DEATH In
Canada, cash given to children, grandchildren or any other relative or friend while you’re still alive will not be taxed. It is not reportable and does not show up on tax returns as it is not considered income. If the gift is property, the giver could be liable for tax on capital gains if the property has appreciated in value, such as in the case of a family cottage. Capital gains do not apply if you transfer ownership to a spouse or common-law partner. There are also some potential tax-savings opportunities if you’re a parent in a high tax bracket who passes down non-registered assets to a child to pay down a mortgage or make an RRSP contribution.
BUY LIFE INSURANCE If you have a spouse, children or any other dependents, you need life insurance. In the event of your death, your income stops but dependents will still need to pay bills, rent or a mortgage and living expenses. Think of life insurance as your income to keep the family stable for many years after you’re gone. Early in your adult life is the most critical time to buy life insurance as this is when most adults tend to have a higher mortgage, childcare costs or significant debt. To be left with nothing in the event of the unexpected death of a loved one would be devastating. Contact an insurance broker to determine whether you need term insurance or permanent insurance, or a combination of both. Term insurance has a guaranteed premium for a set term (10 or 20 years). After the term has expired, the premium typically goes up. As time goes on, your need for term insurance will decrease, and you can choose not to renew your policy. Permanent insurance has a fixed premium forever but is more expensive. Talk to an insurance broker to find out about the costs of each type of insurance.

NEED A NEW ROOF? THE LOW-DOWN ON METAL VS ASPHALT
By Julie Achtermeier
The roof is the most critical surface in your home, and choosing a lasting solution can be a daunting task. With the varying weather conditions in Canada, a roof is under regular assault from the sun, snow, and rain. A leaky roof during the winter can be a costly and inconvenient repair so ensure you choose a reliable solution when it’s time to replace your shingles. Many experts have opposing views on whether to buy metal or asphalt shingles but much depends on your budget and how long you plan to stay in your home. A roof is an important necessity yet consumers don’t receive the immediate reward of spending all that money, like buying a new couch or renovating a kitchen. But peace of mind is worth a great deal as well, especially if your area gets hit with an ice storm or high winds which could rip shingles off your roof and force a costly repair bill.
PROS AND CONS OF ASPHALT SHINGLES Asphalt is a proven solution that many builders are familiar with and a costeffective option for new builds. When it comes time to replace your shingles, consider the age of the home, how long you plan to live there and your budget. If you plan to move in 10-20 years, asphalt roofs are often the preferred choice because of their reasonable cost and ease of installation – most roofs can be replaced in one or two days. Asphalt is also easier to repair, so if you are at the receiving end of a windstorm or freak weather event and require replacement shingles, repairs can be reasonable and quick. As far as longevity goes, most asphalt shingles come with a 20- to 30-year guarantee. There are more styles and colour options available so you can stick with a basic offering to save costs or give your roof a new look if you prefer. On the downside, asphalt is susceptible to severe weather and does not hold up well to high winds or hail. In areas where there is snow cover for long periods, asphalt can succumb to moss, mildew and algae if there is not enough exposure to sunlight. Asphalt is also extremely heavy, weighing in at approximately 90 kilograms (200 pounds) per square and disposal of used shingles means a great deal of material ending up in landfill sites. Recently, in Canada, recycling has become a growing practice with several companies offering to recycle building materials including asphalt shingles. In Canada, approximately 1.25 million tonnes per year of asphalt-based roofing waste is generated. Many roofing contractors are introducing sustainable solutions into their business model and have adopted recycling practices as their form of disposal. Instead of dropping off the shingles at the landfill, the shingles can be dropped off to a recycling facility to be ground up and used within the community to improve roads.
PROS AND CONS OF METAL ROOFS The draw to metal roofs is primarily for longevity as many metal manufacturers offer warranties of 50 years. For homeowners planning to retire where they are currently residing, or those who plan to keep a property in the family, metal roofs may well be worth the investment. Metal roofs also offer exceptional protection against extreme weather events. They provide excellent wind resistance, are fireproof and superior at preventing leaks. Metal roofs are also more energy efficient since metal reflects heat and helps keep homes cooler in the summer months. Most products contain recycled content and are themselves recyclable. Critics would argue that metal roofs are prone to expanding and contracting with extreme temperatures which makes them less watertight but proper installation can help eliminate this effect. After many years on the market, metal roofs have improved considerably and most products today are made with alloys and specialized resin paints that can handle extreme temperatures and precipitation without issue. While some skeptics suggest metal costs several times more than asphalt, the average cost of a metal roof in Canada in 2018 was roughly double that of asphalt. Asphalt prices vary considerably based on the type of metal – steel, aluminum or zinc or copper finishes, and labour costs. Whatever your choice in roofing, be sure to do your research and hire a reputable contractor. https://canadianmetalroofing.ca/metal-roofing-prices/ https://www.builderonline.com/products/pros-and-cons-asphalt-shingles-vs-metal-roofing_o

Choosing a flooring solution for your home can seem overwhelming with the many options currently on the market. Consider the type of wear your floors endure - whether you have kids, pets or a busy lifestyle will make a difference in what kind of flooring you should choose. Determining whether to go with solid wood or engineered wood depends a great deal on your budget and the level of upkeep you are willing to invest time in.
SOLID HARDWOOD
is typically 1.9cm thick (3/4”) and often favoured for being “traditional” wood flooring. We think of solid hardwood as being easier to sand and refinish with many different types of woods and grains available. The most common wood used in new homes in Canada is Northern Red Oak as it has a natural colour variation with more open grain patterns. It has a medium “hardness” rating and is suitable for most families. Hard Maple is also
very popular in Canada with a slightly higher hardness rating than Northern Red Oak. It has a cleaner look with a smooth finish and much less grain variation than other woods. Hickory is ideal for busy families with a lot of floor traffic. It is a much harder wood and has a less grainy appearance. It can easily be stained any shade because of its natural white, creamy colour. White Ash is the most popular of the Ash tree species because it grows quickly, adapts to almost any conditions and is low maintenance. While
it is not as hard as oak, it is more stable, and the grain in Ash is similar in that it hides natural imperfections well. Distressed woods are by far the most popular, especially wire-brushed and Hickory, which is an excellent choice for their look and durability. For active families with pets and high traffic, a wire-brushed finish gives the wood boards texture while effectively hiding scratches. Pre-finished floors are a better option because they are stained and sealed by the manufacturer before installation. While there are many other types of solid hardwood options available on the market, there is one thing they all have in common - they are more susceptible to changes in humidity. Solid hardwood responds to moisture as it would in nature - if the air is hot and humid, the floor will take on moisture causing it to swell. When the air dries out, so will the wood, causing it to gap. If you choose to go with traditional solid hardwood, you will need to maintain a consistent level of humidity in your home and maintain your floors on a regular basis. Ask your wood dealer which products to use for cleaning to keep your floors in excellent condition.
ENGINEERED HARDWOOD is made of layers of wood which are bonded together with adhesives under intense heat and pressure. This process ensures the floors are not as affected by humidity fluctuations as is typical of the Canadian climate. A common misconception is that engineered hardwood cannot be sanded and refinished, but this is not true. Many engineered floors can be refinished at least once, and more often if you purchase a higher end variant. If you prefer wider wood boards, choose engineered hardwood as it is more stable than solid wood. Most experts advise not going with wider than 11.43cm (4 Âź inches) in a solid hardwood as it will be more prone to cupping and gapping. Unlike solid hardwood, engineered requires little maintenance and is much less affected by temperature and moisture changes, which in turn makes it more resistant to warping and cupping. Whether solid hardwood or engineered is the best option, your wood floors are meant to last for many years and are a considerable investment to make in your home. Before investing in any wood flooring, consult with experts in the industry and do your research.
10 PAINT TOUCH-UPS FOR A SHOW-READY HOME When selling your home, it pays to touch up the paint. The higher perceived value of a maintained home is well-documented, and there’s no easier (or more economical) way to give the impression than with some fresh paint. Before placing your home on the market, complete these 10 touch-ups. Or, you may want to contact a painter and do more than touch up spots. 1. If you want buyers to consider your home, make sure the front door is well-painted. A fresh coat of paint will make a great first impression.
7. Inspect areas that come in contact with soiled hands—window frames, door frames, edges of doors, and walls around light switches. You may be able to clean them if you used a glossy paint; if not, do more touch-ups.
2. Next up is the entrance hall, where buyers will get their initial glimpse of the interior. At the very least, touch up areas where the paint shows marks or chips. Think of repainting this area entirely.
8. Scrub cabinet doors clean of fingerprints, if possible, or touch up painted areas.
3. Bathrooms often receive extra scrutiny from buyers, so give them extra attention. Touch up as needed.
9. Water stains on the ceiling are a huge red flag for buyers. Be sure to prime and re-paint these potential deal breakers.
4. Size does matter when it comes to the kitchen. If you want to make yours look bigger, paint the walls white or off-white. If repainting is not an option, remove food stains from the walls and conceal water spots by applying primer, then touch-up paint.
10. Put the finishing touches on your home. Look for stray flecks of paint, as well as marks and stains. Conceal them with some touch-up paint, and your home will be good to go...and show!
5. Assess your windowsills, especially if the view is a selling point. Sand, prime and paint them as needed. 6. Check your woodwork. Touch up chipped or marred paint on chair rails and floor molding.
You may be able to touch up some areas yourself, but for bigger projects and whole room repainting, be sure to call your local home painting service company for an estimate and help. Source: The Paint Quality Institute Reprinted with permission from RISMedia. ©2018. All rights reserved.
