Late Summer Projects to Complete Before Fall If you’re still enjoying the lazy days of summer, there are some projects you can be doing to prep your home for fall. Knocking out some small projects now will not only lessen the workload down the road but will also help you avoid the stress and expense of emergency situations in the thick of cooler weather.


1. Have your furnace inspected. While the thought of heating your house in August probably isn’t at the top of your list, August is a great month to have an HVAC pro come in (before they get much busier in the fall and winter) and check for leaks, heating inefficiencies, and change your furnace filter.

2. Seal drafts. Check around windows and doors to see where leaks may be occurring. Now is a great time to take care of patching holes and caulking around windows while the weather is still warm - you’ll be able to feel some warm air coming through any holes.

3. Inspect trees and fertilize your lawn. The end of the summer is a great time to do yard related tasks. Inspect the trees on your property and get rid of any dead limbs before storms hit. Also, take the time to fertilize your lawn now to help guard against winter damage.

4. Inspect your roof. Before fall leaves and winter snow wear your roof down, take the time to have loose shingles replaced and any patches made.

5. Test home safety devices. Use this time to test all your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors or fire extinguishers. Replace batteries or install new ones so you’re ready to go once it’s time to fire up the fireplace. And, speaking of the fireplace:

6. Clean your fireplace. Chimney sweeps get very busy once the fall season is in full swing, so make an appointment to have your fireplace professionally cleaned during this off-season.

So, while you take a break from relaxing and soaking up the last bit of summer, give your home that TLC to make sure it’s ready to take on the changes fall will bring. Consider hiring a home services contractor or handyman service that can help you tackle multiple tasks like those above, or reach out to a specific provider like a roofer or chimney sweep. Getting some of these things taken care of now will let you enjoy more of your fall.

Having a large family can be great, but if there is one “drawback” it’s that you will need more space in a home to meet everyone’s needs and keep them comfortable. With a large family, you’ll need a larger house, because a home with three bedrooms and one bathroom isn’t going to cut it. You will need to look for homes with as much living and storage space as possible. To help in your search for a home, consider looking for a house with the following features:

Look for a big yard A bigger yard provides room for all of your kids’ activities. Younger children can play on a play set, while older kids practice sports. If you have a family pet or pets, the larger yard is better for them too to run around and play. A large yard is also perfect for having friends over or for large family gatherings in the summer. Find a Home with a Finished Basement or Attic With younger children, having one of these rooms is perfect to have as their playroom – a place where the kids can play without you having to worry about the good living room furniture getting messed up. And when your kids get older, a space like this will allow them privacy and room to have friends over. And later on, when a child is home from college, or even living at home for a bit post-graduation, these spaces are ideal for providing a feeling of “their own space.”

At Least Four Bedrooms While younger children can share bedrooms, older kids will need a room to themselves. If you can afford to, having a bedroom for each child is the way to go. Also, private or shared bathrooms for the kid’s rooms will help make getting ready in the morning easier for everyone in the house. A Large Garage or Driveway A two car garage will allow both parents to keep their cars free from the elements and off the street. A large garage will also provide storage space for things like sports equipment. And as your kids get older and get cars of their own, a large driveway will provide parking space and room to come and go. There are many products on the market that are suitable for families with pets. Whether you prefer carpet, hardwood, laminate or vinyl flooring, there are options for every pet owner.


VINYL: Vinyl is also a good option and

is scratch resistant but be sure to choose a high-quality product, preferably “virgin” vinyl. It is 100% waterproof and can be purchased in planks or as a large sheet. Plank vinyl flooring comes in a plank style similar to laminate flooring and is installed to create a natural wood look. Vinyl plank flooring also has a sturdy fiberglass backing to it making it more rigid.

LAMINATE: Installing hard-surface

flooring makes clean up more manageable when you have pets. Laminate is always a great option but be sure to choose a high-quality product. The higher the AC (Abrasion Class) rating, the more durable the product. A score of AC 3 is residential, whereas AC 4 is low-traffic commercial, and anything above is considered high-traffic commercial. It is not recommended to go any lower than AC3 or to purchase a product that does not have a rating.

TILE: Tile is extremely durable and

scratch-resistant and makes for easy clean up of accidents and spills. Most tile materials are scratch-resistant, but some softer, more porous stones (like marble) may require more maintenance and treatment. For added comfort and warmth, consider using area rugs throughout the space.

CARPET: Most carpet manufacturers

have an option to purchase “pet protection.” These are soil resistant, easy to clean and long-lasting finishes. If you are a dog or cat owner considering carpet, ask what protection options are available.

BAMBOO: Out of all wood flooring

options, bamboo is rated as the best and one of the most popular flooring for dogs and pet-friendly homes. The bamboo wood has a natural hardness that makes it more stain and scratch resistant than traditional hardwood. It can withstand high traffic, is resistant to wear and tear, and is eco-friendly.

HARDWOOD: If you prefer hardwood,

choose wood with a pronounced grain such as oak or ash. Hiding scratches in the grain are easier, and you can request a matching stain pen from the dealer. Distressed products are trendy, affordable, and stylish and a favorable choice if you have larger pets with claws. A wire-brushed finish is one of the best options available, and this texture makes it very easy to hide scratches. Woods with a distressed, hand-scraped look are also very useful as the distressing helps hide scratches and dents. Choosing a matte or satin finish shows fewer scratches than a product with a higher gloss level.
