The Price of Value

What’s the difference between price and value? According to Warren Buffet “price is what you pay, and value is what you get.” In real estate, sellers are selling a “home” and buyers are purchasing a “house.” Homes are layered with emotion, its where children took first steps, family and friends were entertained, dinners were shared at the kitchen table and times of joy & sorrow were experienced. How do you put a price on that kind of emotional value? In contrast, buyers are purchasing a house which is not much different than any other product or good. Just like when you buy a car or television, buyers scour the internet researching and comparing and re-researching. How many bedrooms and bathrooms, is the yard flat, are kitchen and bathrooms updated, how are the schools, when was the roof replaced and so on. The price they are willing to pay isn’t tied to the emotional value of the property but rather its location and features, and for that they want to pay the lowest price possible. Ultimately, the seller’s valuable memories can never be priced, and the buyers will turn their new house into a home. And Now you know The “Real” Story.
