Trek Tracks
I love it when Tiger comes in our office; he is a walking trip down memory lane and can tell a story like few people I know. Now granted he can exaggerate a bit but that is part of the fun and everyone loves to hear Tiger spin a tale. I know most of his stories are based on fact because Trek has sent him around the world for over 38 years and counting as a charter member. The subject of much of our conversation was that Tiger wanted to discuss taking one more trip to Argentina to hunt ducks, but mentioned some of his group was “getting on up there” and traveling that far was tough. We discussed hunting in Nicaragua which I mentioned was only three hours from Miami and hinted that I would come along if invited. Lucky enough Tiger was able to get a few of his buddies together including another of my heroes Bryan Jennings, also a charter member and long time Trekkie Charlie Perry both a young 90 and 82 respectively!! Together with a few more clients both local and scattered about and yes a bit younger, we set off on our hunt this past March. It had been a few years since I visited Nicaragua and while many things had changed some, had not. The roads are better but there are more cars, bikes and scooters so travel time was about what I remembered. Tiger of course was not in a hurry, taking the time to get his bearings as he had been there many times before and evidenced by correctly identifying Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua while marveling at the giant mango trees and various farm crops, smiling and waiving to anyone who looked his way. Admittedly, I was quite worried about my ageless heroes getting along on this
Bryan Jennings on the left and Tiger Holmes on the right. duck hunt as it is quite tricky at 4:00 AM walking through cow tracks, on our way to a rickety dock and then down into a small boat which ferried us to the airboat. But alas, we were a team on a mission and nothing was going to deter our goal of reaching our duck blinds at the appropriate hour which was accomplished every day! As Tiger and I were sitting in our blind just before sunrise, admiring the smoldering San Cristobal Volcano, he admitted that he was not as mad at the ducks as before. But as he was telling me this, a group of teal landed in our spread before we could get our guns loaded and I could see that didn’t sit well with Tiger. He jammed five shells into his Beretta and wasn’t long before more teal came in bigger numbers and Tiger locked on three of them in concession, and with a slight smile and a wink, the Tiger man was instantly back to his old ways. As the morning progressed I noted several times that Tiger had emptied his gun on a group of blue wings, and spouting language that was testimony indeed he was still mad as ever at those ducks. He finished with a beautiful mix of waterfowl and I knew then that this trip was already a success. As the hunt progressed I had the chance to talk with my heroes about WWII and their roles as decorated fighter pilots, their stories like many I have the fortunate opportunity to hear while at Trek, are a true testament to the “greatest generation”. Few discussions can bring a tear like those coming from veterans who served in combat next to their buddies in peril, and the extreme sacrifices -3-
they made for which I am forever grateful. Our group delighted in the hunting and I spent some time watching my good friend Bryan Jennings take some white wings one afternoon and I believe he was as happy about offering them to the locals for dinner as he was about his good marksmanship. It wasn’t long before he was surrounded by locals and despite my concern that it was being disruptive, Bryan put his gun down and offered the crowd candy and took their pictures. This scene was repeated after every hunt and one I had witnessed many times over the years, yet no less rewarding. There is such joy in handing candy and dove to an underprivileged village, and not likely considered by anti hunting critics. The hunting in Nicaragua was fantastic, and as our mission was winding down I sensed each of my heroes were glad they had made one more hunting trip, if not so much for the sport and camaraderie, but the fact that they proved to themselves that they could still hang with us youngsters doing something they have enjoyed all their lives. So all you guys in your 60’s and 70’s complaining about your various maladies, suck it up, there are real men in their 90’s making sure kids are getting a decent meal of dove and ducks in Central America!! You can read more about this trip in the Journal section of our website.

I got a visit earlier this year from one of my local heroes, his name is Tiger Holmes and he dropped by since he was “in the neighborhood” attending a funeral. Something Tiger says he does all too often these days, not unusual you see because Tiger is 90.

I consider myself very fortunate to have visited La Portenita Lodge on my first trip in 2009 hence my return in 2010 and as it was then, every aspect of the trip for me and my group was superb. I have no intention of trying another outfitter, or even trying another H&H lodge, as I do not think it can be done any better. Trek Safaris, Nico, the field guides, the lodge staff, and the masseuses, exhibit the utmost in professionalism and are the real reason that I will be back. Mark Hundley The Shooting: Cordoba is the dove capital of the world estimating the dove population to be in the neighborhood of 32 million birds. With huge tracts of agriculture and few known predators, the dove population has exploded and continues to do so. The South American eared dove is similar in size and appearance to the North American mourning dove except the eared dove has a shorter tail. But the chief difference between the two is the eared dove’s pattern of flying the entire day which allows us to hunt all day even in inclement weather. This is a shotgunner’s dream and it is not uncommon to shoot 3-4 cases of shells per day and more. A typical hunting days starts with a wake up call around 7:00 am. After a full breakfast, we will load into the vans for the 30-60 minute drive to the field. Your pick-up boy will meet you in the pre-scouted field with plenty of shells and a cooler of cold drinks. Shooting should be steady until lunch where a full asado is served consisting of local cuts of beef, chicken and pork, accompanied by excellent salads, fresh baked breads and fine wines. After lunch we will continue to shoot until late afternoon when the sun starts to set and then make our way back to the lodge for cocktails and appetizers followed by a full dinner and wines.
TRIP FEE: $3,395.00 per person based on double occupancy. DESCRIPTION: Includes RT airfare on LAN airlines from Miami all guided hunting with room and meals, local beer and wine, hunting license, gun permits and all transfers in Cordoba. Trip fee does not include shotgun shells ($12.00 per box), gratuities or items of personal nature. A $1,000.00 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your reservation. SEASON: Year around. DATES: July 9-14, 15-21, Sept. 7-12, Sept. 30-Oct 6, Oct 12-18.
The Accommodations: Trek has exclusive rights for three deluxe lodges with each having their own distinctive characteristics, design and location. The one thing all our lodges have in common is that they offer the very best staffing, service, equipment and cuisine available in Argentina. For the 2011 season Trek and H&H will continue to feature the Sierra Verde, La Portenita and La Loma Lodges. Please inquire about a brochure and individual listings for the each of the lodges.

Ducks Galore!!!

If you like to hunt ducks the traditional way by calling them into your decoys pairs at a time this is your trip. Hunting in the B.A. Province is a water fowler’s dream with over 12 species available and located just over three hours from Buenos Aires. You will be hunting with one of the best outfitters in the business and staying in unique estancias from an era gone by. The Trip: Your hunt starts with a non-stop, overnight flight LAN Airlines flight from Miami to Buenos Aires arriving the next morning. Cane’s staff will be on hand to clear your firearms paperwork and then transfer you to either to Monte Laguna Lodge or Estancia San Juan. After introductions and lunch, you will have an afternoon duck hunt this day. The next three days are full shooting days with hunts in both the mornings and afternoons. The last day we shoot in the morning and then drive back to Buenos Aires and catch our overnight flight home. In total this trip is seven days and six nights. The Hunting: This region is relatively new for duck hunting as for years it was one of the most expensive, fertile grain and cattle farming areas in Argentina. In 1988 this area of Buenos Aires was flooded to the point of saturation, raising the aquifer and forming thousand of new potholes and lagoons. These lagoons have progressed into newly formed ecosystems with new growth of beautiful large reeds and lily pads and given its proximity to grain fields, this area is a haven for waterfowl and wildlife. The duck species that now inhabit the area include the common fulvous tree duck (different from the duck found in Central America), black bellied tree ducks, white faced tree ducks, southern widgeon, brown or Chilean
pintail, white-cheeked pintail, speckled teal, cinnamon teal, Argentina red shoveler, silver teal, rosy billed pochard, black headed duck,
and the lake duck (a type of ruddy duck). Cane St. Antonin will be your host and is one of the best outfitters in Argentina. There are two areas we hunt, one close to the city of Lincoln and the other near Carlos Casares. The typical hunting day starts with an early wakeup call and breakfast before heading to the blinds. We will be leaving early enough so that we are set up to start shooting at first light. Most drives to the lagoons are from 10 to 45 minutes from the lodge. Usually the ducks will fly until mid morning and depending on the weather could fly until noon with everyone shooting about 3-4 -10-
boxes in the mornings. After the shoot we will head back to the lodge for a large hot lunch and have time for a quick nap before the afternoon shoot. The afternoon duck hunts last from around 3:30 pm until dark. The Accommodations: In Casares we are using our mainstay Monte Laguna Lodge that was built some 50 years ago in the middle of a lagoon system where ducks have been coming for years. It has four bedrooms, hardwood floors, large fireplace and architecture befitting it times. Ion Lincoln we use the stately Estancia San Jose that was originally built at the turn of the 20th century for a wealthy cattle family and recently renovated with seven bedrooms, large ceilings, hardwood floors and loads of architectural wonders. TRIP FEE: $4,195.00 per person based on double occupancy. Not included are tips, shotgun shells and items of a personal nature. DESCRIPTION: Includes round-trip air from Miami, three full and two half days of shooting, food and lodging at the Monte Laguna Lodge, all permits and transfers. There are not many places where Dove, Ducks, Perdiz and Pigeon can be hunted in the same country, much less while staying at the same deluxe Lodge. You’ll generally blast a case (500 shell) per half day on Doves, 15-20 boxes on a full day Pigeon shoot, 3-4 boxes per Duck hunt and a couple of boxes on a morning Perdiz shoot. Book your trip today. The Trip: The trip starts with an overnight flight out of Miami to Buenos Aires. A Trek rep will meet you and assist the group with their gun papers and then transfer you to the domestic airport for the flight to Santa Fe. Ariel Semenov or Gustavo Pavon will meet you in Santa Fe and then drive you to the Malalcue Lodge. Time permitting you will have an afternoon shoot. The following four days are full hunting days. On your last day you will shoot in the morning only, and then transfer back to Buenos Aires for your flight home. The Shooting: This is a mixed bag affair, so you’ll
do a different type shooting each day. Wake up call depends on what specie we are shooting, but each day will start with breakfast, then a drive to the field or lagoon. Shooting this time of season is two-three hours in the morning, and about three hours in the afternoon. We return to the lodge during midday for lunch and a rest. The Dove in the Malalcue area is the Eared Dove, very much like our Mourning Dove. Most shooting is pass or roost shooting this time of year. If the group wants to shoot Ducks, we are in the blinds before first light. In the afternoon we’ll generally shoot Dove or Perdiz. On this trip we are offering a tremendous variety of shooting activities. In four full days of action, you’ll have four different types of shooting. Generally most groups go after Ducks two or three times, Perdiz once, one day of Pigeons and a day and a half of Dove. There are daily limits on Ducks (25) and Perdiz (8), so these are generally half day shoots. There are no limits on Doves or Pigeons. Our Pigeons are the Argentine BlueGrey Pigeon. They have the wing span of over -11-
26 inches, larger than a Blue Wing Teal. They are a sporty bird and a day of Pigeon hunting is something you’ll never forget. Perdiz hunting is very similar to Quail hunting. We shoot over pointing dogs. Limit is eight per day and it usually takes an hour and a half to get your limit. Note Perdiz season is only open from May 1st to August 15th. The Accommodations: Accommodations are excellent. Malalcue Lodge is a large, comfortable hacienda. The lodge has six bedrooms all with private bath, private dining room, living room, bar, gun room, separate barbecue room and swimming pool. The lodge overlooks the Corrientes River. This is Trek’s 18th season at Malalcue. Our groups take up the entire lodge. Meals on this trip are especially prepared for the group. TRIP FEE: $5,395.00 per person based on double occupancy. DESCRIPTION:The trip fee covers all costs from Miami (including airfare coach class) except shotgun shells, tips, and any departure tax (wine and beer provided). Charter flights are available for an additional cost. A $1,000.00 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your reservation. GAME: Dove, Pigeon, Duck & Perdiz. DATES: Aug. 6-14, 11-18, 25 Sept. 1. Pricing is subject to change and excludes any fuel surcharges.
Argentina - Estancia Poitahue 36°25’9.87” S 65°30’26.80” W
This is the Premiere Big Game Hunting Operation in Argentina
If you wish to hunt Red Stag in 2012 from one of the best “free range” hunting areas in Argentina, then you had better sign up quick. Poitahue Ranch offers not only great rifle opportunities but also the best chance to take a Stag with a bow especially during the rutting season of March and April. Select your new 2012 date now. The Red Deer was introduced into Argentina from herds in Eastern Europe around the turn of the 20th century. Today their range includes much of the La Pampa and the Patagonia regions and the breeding has improved to the point of rivaling the big bulls in New Zealand and Europe. Most of the real huge trophy animals are hunted in fenced properties, we have always preferred to promote fair chase animals and Poitahue has some of the best free range Red Stag in the world. The Hunting: Poitahue has always been about ranching and hunting. It’s been that way for generations and owner Alejandro Pini has insured this legacy will continue. Using the 70,000 acres at their disposal, Poitahue has managed their Stag herds superbly and have a 95% success rate for the free range hunts (during rut season). This is an outstanding success rate and a credit to their program. The hunts take place in the grassy lowlands of La Pampa that offers a blend of hilly, semi-dense forests of Caldén and Alpataco and open pastures that hold excellent populations of Red Deer, Boar, Blackbucks, wild Goats and Indian Buffalos. Additionally, due to the immense size of Poitahue and its location, they are able to customize hunts to fit most anyone regardless of physical abilities. Guides are all local and will hunt clients on a 1x1 basis and know every acre of Poitahue and while not fluent in Spanish, they have little problem with communicating the hunt. Taking place in an area known as the Loventhue District you will find roaring Stag in numbers you may never see
anywhere else. Aside from taking a nice Stag (or water buffalo) and with time permitting, this program will also allow you to take an additional Stag (promotional or management), a boar, and a ram or feral goat. And if you find that you have the time, Poitahue has some excellent wingshooting for pigeons and dove nearby on an optional basis as well as ten exotic trophy species on property. The Accommodations: Poitahue Ranch has three separate lodges but we will use primarily Poitahue Lodge which is a typical, colonial style estancia of thick stone or stucco walls and large windows. There are three well appointed bedrooms with private baths and A/C, two adjoining cabins that have two bedrooms each for a total capacity of 12 (six hunters/six non hunter). The lodge also features a nice dining and living room area with a huge fireplace and for those late night stories, there is a separate club room with fireplace and bar. As is the case with every estancia Trek represents in Argentina, the food and level of service is first rate. The Trip: Clients will need to fly into Buenos Aires in where Trek will arrange a flight to Santa Rosa in the La Pampa Region. The staff at Poitahue Ranch will meet you there and transfer you 90 minutes to the lodge. You have time to scope in your rifle and take an animal if you wish. The next four full days you will hunt your desired game and then on the last day you’ll have time to hunt that morning and the fly back to B.A. to catch your flight home. -12-

The Hunting: The Hunting: The duck hunting is excellent as we have a good variety of ducks (over 12 species) in this area with our main species being; Rosey Billed Pochard, widgeon, tree ducks, and 4 different types of teal. The duck hunting is done in the areas vast shallow lagoons, marshes and lakes where Eduardo has exclusive leases of his hunting areas. We limit each hunter to four boxes of shells per morning so if you are a good shot, the limits are very liberal. The afternoon will be filled walking comfortably behind one of Eduardo’s well mannered Brittany’s for the quick flying perdiz, which found mostly in singles, provides lots of action. These afternoons are becoming favorites of many clients that love shooting wild upland birds. The perdiz season is May through July only so if you go August and September we will hunt ducks in the afternoons as well. The Trip: Each trip is an eight day, eight night adventure with 5 morning duck hunts and 4 afternoons of Perdiz (May –July) or duck hunting. Our trip stars in Miami with an overnight flight on American Airlines to Montevideo, Uruguay. When you arrive you will be met by Eduardo or one of his staff. They will assist the group through customs and you will be transferred three and a half hours near the town of Chuy. Our hunt headquarters will be the Hotel Fortin de San Miguel. Eduardo leases the entire hotel from May through September 15th for exclusive use of his duck hunters. The next four days we will be
hunting ducks in the mornings and perdiz hunting over Brittany’s in the afternoons. After the last mornings duck hunt Claudio will drive the group back to Montevideo where you will catch your overnight American Airlines flights back home arriving in Miami early the next morning. The Accommodations: Our hunt headquarters will again be the Hotel Fortin de San Miguel near the Uruguay/Brazil border town of Chuy. This unique hotel gives the hunt an old world charm as was modeled after the adjacent historic fort that once guarded the frontier with Brazil. The Hotel is a perfect setting for a group of duck hunters as it is ideally located to the lagoons and has an incredible view of the surrounding countryside. Each hunter will have his own single room and bath. The food at the hotel is especially prepared for our groups with fine Uruguayan and Argentine beef, as well as local favorites of poultry and pasta. -14-

A line of beaters- generally 40-50, will push the partridge over the shooters at their assigned pegs set about 15-30 yards down the crest of a hill. The birds will come flying fast and quick over the hill and the shooting is fast and furious. A good shot can expect to spend three to four shells per partridge. After the third drive we’ll break for a field lunch. This is an elegant affair with linen table cloths, fine china, etc. We’ll have paella, steaks, and partridge for lunch- of course accompanied by fine Rioja -24-
wines and beer. We’ll have one last drive after lunch- then return to the hacienda. There’s time for a shower and some rest before dinner. These are special affairs with traditional meals and an elegance depicting an era gone by, yet still here. Other Activities: Among the non-shooting activities will be a trip to Toledo, and visits to nearby typical haciendas, small villages and historical points. You may also choose to go shopping for leather goods, porcelain, ceramics, pottery and local wines.

We are very fortunate to again represent Hosteria San Huberto and Collon Cura Lodge as two our top destinations for 2010 and 2011. San Huberto Lodge: This two story estancia is located in the shadows of the Lanin Volcano and near the town of Junin de los Andes. Its 40,000 acres are owned by Carlos and Carmen Olsen and has been in their family since before the 20th century. Meandering through the property is the majestic Malleo River and its willow lined banks are the stuff artist’s dream of when they
open their canvas. Bu t by f a r t h e biggest asset of the river is its teeming rainbow and brown trout and much of it using dry flies. Whether you like wide open areas where the river turns slightly and creates quiet pools, or smaller sections where the water is swifter but the fish are less wary, the Malleo is an angler’s paradise. Your hosts and guides will be none other than Ronnie and Gustavo Olsen who have fished these rivers all their lives and today have a reputation second to none. The food, service and overall experience at San Huberto is superb. Collon Cura Lodge: Not too far off the highway heading southeast from San Martin you will come to an intimate lodge called Collon Cura on the river of its namesake. This small lodge has a total capacity of eight anglers and much of the same amenities as San Huberto. Your hosts will be Nano and Malu Acuna who have done an excellent job in this capacity for many years. With its long and winding bends and steep banks that drop straight down, the Collon Cura offers a -31-
wonderful venue for a float trip. Using McKenzie boats the Olsen’s slowly work sections of the river and numbers of fish can be staggering. These float trips are a great way to cover lots of area and to see some of the wildlife like Red Stag and huge boar. Collon Cura is the perfect change of pace from the Malleo River. We suggest the perfect itinerary to be four days at San Huberto and two in Collon Cura. Uruguay - Salto Grande 43°10’35.89” S 71°35’59.86” W
Monster Dorados are Now Available
If you want to hang a 50 pound plus golden dorado on your wall there is only one place where that can occur every day, Salto Grande Uruguay. The peak feeding season for these monsters is now so we suggest you call Trek today to request a date. The Fishing: The ferocious dorado (salminus maxillosus) is one of the most sought after trophies in South America and just as popular in many respects as the peacock bass only larger. The Uruguay River that separates Argentina to the west and Uruguay to the east is the power source for a hydro-electric dam called Salto Grande and when the turbines to draw water are implemented, it creates some serious cavitations that affect the ability for baitfish to escape from preying dorado who take full advantage of their superior size and strength. It’s very much like ringing the dinner bell and these golden bass get huge with catches of 20 fish or more weighing over 20 pounds a daily expectation. The most productive area to fish is a square mile area right
next to the dam that is referred in Spanish as La Zona (the zone). In the past there were only two boats allowed to fish four days a week from Argentina but recently a new concession was allowed from Uruguay and now two boats are allowed to fish four days a week as well. Boats are 21 foot fiberglass with 70 horse motors and guides are all locally trained. Accommodations: This trip is based out of the Horacio Quiroga Thermal Resort located on the Uruguay River adjacent to Salto Grande. It has 80 rooms and suites and is known for its thermal pools and great location. With several bars and restaurants it is just the sort of small resort that offers a diverse range of services that fit well for small groups of anglers. Within minutes we will be at the boat landing followed by battles with the Dorado. In the afternoon you may wish to visit the thermal spa and request a massage at incredibly reasonable prices. The Trip: The trip starts with your arrival into Buenos Aires Ezeiza International on a Thursday morning followed by a private transfer across town to the domestic airport and an afternoon flight to Concordia. The group will be met there by River Plate Outfitters and -33-
transferred to Quiroga Resort in Uruguay. Friday to Monday are full fishing days (7 hours a day) in the exclusive tailwaters near the dam. Tuesday we transfer back across the border to Concordia and our morning flight back to B.A. and your connecting flight home.

The Captain Peacock also has the best native guides of any vessel in the Amazon which means you’ll catch more fish and most likely get an answer to all of your Amazon questions. The Trip: Our adventure starts with a Friday morning departure from Miami to Manaus (Trek will be happy to assist you in making your air arrangements) arriving there Friday afternoon. Our group will then transfer directly to the Tropical Hotel. The remainder of today at leisure in Manaus. After breakfast at the hotel the next morning you will be met and be transferred to your charter flight to Barcelos and on to the Santana to get settled
in. SundayFriday the group will be exposed to some incredible fishing for peacock bass, pirahnas, catfish and surubi. Our groups can also take part in daily excursions including visits to local villages and their way of life, jungles tours looking at bird and fauna, and backwater journeys where huge canopy forests climb to the sky and visit some critters here you may have not seen before. This trip will be as structured as you want it to be, with one thing for sure; every day your guide and private boat will go where you want to go and when you are ready. Each evening the Captain Peacock will cruise to a different part of the Rio Negro and that is the beauty of having a motherboat operation. On Saturday the group returns to Barcleos for the flight back to Manaus and on to the internationa airport in time to connect with your afternoon flight to Miami. -35-

Our New Program makes this already Incredible Destination even more Attractive For almost 20 years, Trek clients have flocked to Brazil to experience the world’s best Peacock Bass fishing. Groups are kept small, only 8 anglers per week so fishing pressure is never an issue.
Trek Safari’s has operated in the Amazon Basin for nearly 2 decades. As hundreds of our clients can attest, Brazil is THE place to go for shots at trophy sized peacocks. Two new world records established in 2010 affirm that fact. We have utilized various methods of accessing this tremendous fishery; from mother ships to land based lodges, but nothing we have done in the past can match these floating cabins for getting you into the most remote waters. The headwaters of the Amazon Basin, although very productive fisheries, are seldom visited by mother ship operations due to natural barriers such as waterfalls and land masses. Trek will now
be utilizing 8 passenger turbo prop Caravans, allowing anglers to fish almost virgin waters and not be structured into the lengthy mother ship schedules. The floating cabin program will be a seven day, six night trip with four full and one half day of peacock bass action. Upon arrival into Manaus Friday afternoon (Trek will be happy to assist you with your international flights) you will be met by a lodge representative and transfer directly to the Tropical Hotel. Can you Imagine catching 100 Peacocks in a Single Day!!! Bolivia has become one of our top dove hunting destinations and now we have a truly incredible fishing operation as well in the Caño Negro Lodge. The fishing is phenomenal as you can catch literally 100 peacocks a day as well as the toothy Payara and numerous other exotic Amazonian species. The Trip: Originates in Miami with an overnight flight to Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Upon arrival, you will met and assisted through customs before being transferred to the domestic airport for your private three hour charter flight to the Caño Negro Lodge, arriving in time for lunch and to get settled in before your first afternoon of fishing. The lodge will only take eight hunters at a time so space will be very limited as the season is from August through November so book your date early as the fishing should be excellent in this little piece of heaven in the jungle. of before not to mention several varieties of Amazon catfish! The Caño Negro lodge is literally translated to “Black Branch” as in the black branch of the Itenez river. The water has lots of tannin from the jungle in it, giving it its dark tea colored appearance. The fishing is excellent for bait casting, spinning or even fly fishing so whatever your passion, Caño Negro has you covered. We will also maintain a good selection of tackle from rods and reels to terminal tackle such as spoons and lures but it is always advisable to try and bring a few of your own if nothing else to try something different.

This is a family owned business offering cabins on the water with real Alaskan hospitality with local seafood dishes and even your own crab pot. Also inquire about some great duck hunting!! Alaska Float Trip: There are many productive float rivers in Alaska, but there are some that separate themselves from the rest. Despite all the attention, there are always stretches that cannot be reached due to natural barriers or time constraints in a given day. It is these waters that an all new float trip has been designed to reach. Pilot/guide Chad
Hewitt is the brainchild behind this hugely popular trip and the rivers that are fished are some of the best in Alaska. The Alagnak, Chili, Kokatuli, Moraine, River X, and the Mulchatna are all on a who’s who list of trout and salmon waters. Which one you float will be determined by timing, your level of experience and fishing preferences. Your guide will expertly navigate you down waters that can be as much as a class III, or IV rapids, or barely a ripple. Like any float trip, success is determined not only by how many fish you catch, but the journey and experience itself. Rainbow River Lodge: The success of any fishing operation relies on three key factors; location, location and location. Of course you must have a great staff and incredible surroundings to compliment your GPS coordinates and Rainbow Bay has that and more. Owner/ operator Chad Hewitt has developed a great facility that utilizes one of Alaska’s best assets, the famous Copper River. Anglers the world over have come to the Copper to taste the honey that is one fantastic battle after another for rainbow trout in the 30 inch range and it’s a Tiger Woods drive and wedge away from your cabin door. Not only will you experience tremendous fishing on the Copper, but you will be flown to the areas best trout and salmon waters, within reach of their DeHavilland Beaver float planes. -53-

This is a huge advantage for our programs in Cordoba and such a pleasure to offer hunters who do not want to bring their shotguns out of fear that the rental guns are inferior or just do not want the hassle. Trek is very proud and fortunate to partner with H&H who share our view of offering a standard of service that is the best in the industry. We hope you will enjoy these new improvements and look forward to hearing your comments.
Trek offers photo contest In today’s age of digital photography, just about everyone has a camera that can take some very good photos. No doubt some of you have taken some shots that should be seen and what better way to share your memories than with the power of images. Of course they can also help generate some interest so we are offering a photo contest to see who has the goods. The only requirement is that the photo needs to be taken while on a Trek adventure and needs to be high resolution (300 DPI). If your photo is selected we will send you a $500.00 voucher to use against a future Trek trip. The photos can be either hunting or fishing so send those pics to:

Estancia Cortaderas is Teeming with Doves and Pigeons Without question, one of the most requested hunts we receive here at Trek is a combination of high volume dove shoots combined with decoying pigeons. It is also one of the more difficult requests to fill because of the sensitive nature of pigeons shoots in general and the fact they don’t reproduce like the eared dove. But when the stars are aligned and you reach a good concentration of pigeons, it can be one of the most exciting wingshooting trips you can experience. Outfitter Ariel Semenov who operates Estancia Cortaderas and Malalcue Lodge in the Entre Rios and Corrientes provinces of Argentina respectively has been outfitting mixed bagged hunts for over 20 years and knows what it takes to cultivate a good population of pigeons. You must first either farm your own land or lease from farmers where you recognize sizeable pigeon populations and then rotate the fields
according to populations, being careful to not over harvest the pigeons which is the single biggest mistake outfitters make. We at Trek have seen this happen time and time again as the pigeons are here today and gone tomorrow and may not return for many years. But by knowing feeding tendencies, rotating fields and setting a realistic shell limit, you can offer sustainable pigeon hunts and this is Semenov’s goal. Estancia Cortaderas is located on the Parana River in the heart of the agriculture area which allows us to offer pigeon hunts pretty much year round but our primary focus will be the months September-March (spring/summer) when various crops of sorghum, corn, wheat and sunflower are being harvested. Typically the pigeon hunts are an all day affair starting -54-
with the bird boys staking out decoys in the field, trees and perimeter near your blind. Just after daybreak you will see beautiful Picazuro and spot-winged pigeons coming to feed and decoy offering steady shooting until midday where we then break for an asado in the field. After lunch and a short rest you’ll finish the afternoon with another pigeon session either in the same field or at a nearby roost. While there are no limits for pigeons, we prefer not to mention how many you may harvest, but instead our goal is to offer at least the opportunity to spend 500 rounds. The eared dove shooting in Argentina is of course legendary and is no different from Cortaderas where again there are plenty of fields and most within 45 minutes from the lodge. Shooting multiple cases of shells at dove is a daily occurrence and full of nonstop action. In addition to having loads of agriculture, northern Entre Rios has little to no pressure from competing outfitters… a huge advantage!! Check out more details on page?? Of this publication.
The New GRAND SLAM LODGE is now Open There is a new player in the upscale fly fishing market along the Yucatan’s Riviera Maya. It is aptly called the Grand Slam Fly Fishing Lodge and opened in November of 2010 to rave reviews. While there are lots of choices along this stretch of the coast, we think Grand Slam has hit a homerun!! Obviously Grand Slam Lodge has more to do with the fact you can take all four light tackle salt water species, bonefish, snook, tarpon and permit from the famous Ascension Bay located right off their beach. During most times of the year this is a real possibility, especially right now. If you haven’t fished Ascension Bay, it’s a huge bay with endless flats, small mangrove islands and bountiful reefs with its main allure being the propensity to spot big permit on the flats. But while the permit is fun to stalk, you have to be lucky and skilled to take one and then it’s not a certainty. Guides were born to fish this area and use 18-22 foot Panga skiffs with 40-60 horse four-strokes that will get you anywhere you need to go within a couple of hundred square miles of water. GSL is managed by long time Casa Blanca Lodge guru Bobby Settles so they have basically hit the ground running. There are several other fishing lodges within a half hour from Grand Slam, but none of them are at this level in terms of accommodations as GSL offers six beautiful oceanfront villas with king sized Bali beds, 42 inch flat screen satellite TV’s, IPOD docking stations, Jacuzzi’s, overlook and beachside balconies with hammocks. The lodge also features a large swimming pool and separate restaurant and lounge offering a blackboard menu of the best dishes from around the world. Unlike some of the other lodges, GSL has 24 hour electricity and no loud generators. If you have been looking for a place to take your significant other where you enjoy a Caribbean vacation and get in some great fishing as well, then Grand Slam will do nicely. It’s a 3.5 hour trip south of Cancun Airport that is served by most all major airlines from many major cities around the world. Check out some terrific introductory rates on page 45.
