DECOFAIR

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA “Participants are assessed by a specialised jury of leading architects, international designers and real estate developers.” The esteemed Decofair 2017 is Saudi Arabia’s exclusive international design trade exhibition. The 9th edition of the four-day event took place from 6-9 November and housed 120 exhibitors who showcased their sensational designs and furniture pieces at the Hilton Hotel, in Jeddah. The participation of ten Arab and international countries in Decofair was supported by Saudi furniture and decoration imports that exceeded eight billion riyals. The chairwoman of the organizing committee, Haya Al Sunaidi unveiled that the booming construction market in Saudi Arabia led to an increase in demand for furniture to raise the volume of imports to 2.2 billion US dollars (8.25 billion riyals) this year. Having said that, world’s leading companies in design exhibited in the newer edition of Decofair to showcase their latest products and services to the industry. The United States, Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, UAE, and Kuwait represented the wide diversity present in this astonishing industry, and as expected Saudi companies and factories also had an active impact at the event. Al Sunaidi also pointed that preparations for the first “Decofair” Riyadh have commenced and the event is scheduled to happen from 6-8 March 2018 at the stunning Al Faisaliah Hotel. In addition, Rony Al-Haddad, the director of exhibitions disclosed: “Decofair 9th edition covers all sectors of furniture, lighting, design materials and services and home decorations.”

As a whole, Decofair is an effective facilitator for industry professionals, including architects, designers, contractors, investors, hospitality and project managers, to gather and discover what is new in the industry. It gives the opportunity for prestigious local and international companies in the furniture and design sectors to exchange experiences, cooperate together, and do business. The Second edition of “Decofair Design Award 2017” also took place with the participation of the Organization of Islamic Capitals and Cities. The ‘’Decofair Design Awards’’ is a professional platform to support creative designers from all over the world, highlighting products and projects. This leads the way for business professionals and decision-makers to know their body of work and collaborating with them. Finally, participants are assessed by a specialised jury of leading architects, international designers and real estate developers. Saudi Arabia has become one of the main markets in the Middle East in terms of the furniture sector, offering numerous opportunities for growth and expansion. This year, the interior design sector increased by 14% and over 120 projects are expected to be launched during the next three years. Furthermore, Jeddah and Riyadh will see an upsurge of more than 40,000 hotel rooms by the end of 2018.

LUXURY FACTORY

YOUR IDEAS, PREGGO’S SOLUTIONS COVETED MAGAZINE had the pleasure to visit the luxury factory Preggo and discovered a team skilled in moulding ideas and polishing concepts by hand. From the drying lacquer to the furniture pieces still to be assembled as well as the shimmering designs already completed and ready to go, it was in this place, we had the extraordinary opportunity to speak to Davide Pereira, Preggo’s CEO, and the people responsible for the different areas of this luxury factory. Based in the city of Oporto, in Portugal, Preggo hasn’t stopped its growth. With more than fifteen warehouses spread across the region, and as disclosed by Davide Pereira, Preggo (mdpreggo. com), a member of Covet Group (covetgroup.com), gears up for the beginning of an expansion which will allow to “bring together logistics and production in a space of 30 000 m2”. It is definitely a significant step for a factory that defines itself as an international supplier for designers and architects. Preggo will offer an integrated service of luxury furniture and lighting, in four strands: Preggo Wood, Preggo Metal, Preggo Upholstery and Preggo Lighting.

NEWS & TRENDS //

ART AND KNOW-HOW With more than ten years of existence, Davide Pereira enlightened us of how Preggo came about, “a dream of two young designers, Amândio Pereira and Ricardo Magalhães, who are the co-founders of Menina Design and Preggo, I would join them at a later time.” Preggo is the structure that came to support the “ideas and projects imagined by the two designers. ENGINEERING AND CRAFTSMANSHIP The conversation continues in the enthusiastic tone of those who are proud of what they produce. Now, Davide Pereira tells us about one of the crown jewels, Diamond, a piece that was produced for Boca do Lobo and according to Pereira represents “what we are and what we make ... the part of the product engineering that involves craftsmanship, the base is made by a woodcarver ... and from the innovation that we bring when it comes to finishes” BRABBU and CIRCU, two renowned Portuguese brands work on a regular basis with PREGGO, while in the international spectrum, Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and American luxury brand KOKET have also collaborated with the group. The CEO disclosed that yet another type of clients have also worked with them, “such as young Portuguese designers who are looking forward to launching their brand or need a partner in crime, basically up and coming designers who need a helping hand in developing their ideas and projects,” much in resemblance of what was the beginning of PREGGO. Pereira reveals that what makes Preggo grow in technique are the clients, as well as evolving in a way that allows them to closely observe the process of production, even when they are in other latitudes.

TELMO MARQUES, GENERAL DIRECTOR

PREGGO METAL Managed by Telmo Marques, Preggo Metal specialises in working with “noble materials, brass, copper and bronze”. “We are a quintessential metalworking branch because we bring aesthetics to the production process,” explains Telmo Marques, stating that what they cherish the most is giving life to “the dying crafts”. In reference to designs, the head of Preggo Metal highlights the “Nº11 Chair and the Metamorphosis Dining Table from Boca do Lobo”, these are pieces which he regards as excellent examples of the challenges they have to face each week.

JOANA SOUSA, GENERAL DIRECTOR

PREGGO WOOD Preggo Wood has been present since the inception of Preggo group, and Joana Sousa believes that what differentiates her team from the rest is the “woodwork and the part related to finishes,” as she explains, “they aren’t as industrialized and the people who work with us know how to give them meaning”. Besides woodwork, Preggo Wood blends in its pieces, gilt carving or hand-painted tiles, among many other artistic techniques.

FERNANDO PEREIRA, GENERAL DIRECTOR

PREGGO LIGHTING Fernando Pereira has enlightened us of how challenging this period of change and growth has been from Candeeiros Alves. Fernando Alves founded the family company, thirty-eight years ago, and about a year ago, Preggo Group acquired it. Pereira discloses, “We have just inaugurated two pavilions, two aisles with 2000 sqm of space,” the team currently has twenty-three people, and shows many signs of growing. “Without a shadow of a doubt, the quality will improve and we are going to increase our productivity”. In regards to the future, Fernando explains, “We hope that we are being a solution for the group, and to that end, we have to instruct people and motivate the younger ones. Our goal is to create an atelier to educate them; we have been going to schools and trying to inspire them to come and work at Preggo Lighting”.

NEWS & TRENDS //

RICARDO LOURENÇO, GENERAL DIRECTOR

PREGGO UPHOLSTERY “At Preggo Upholstery there is a sense of understanding with the clients, as they can check the finishes and ways to upholster that they may not be as accustomed to,” elucidates Ricardo Lourenço. He goes on to say “we create sofas, chairs, and we even upholster the furniture. We use several techniques, because upholstery is a vintage sector, extremely traditional in Portugal, and we often use quilted details and draperies, and with the assistance of our designs, we are able to modernize this art that has existed for so long.”

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 55.

FERNANDO ABREU, ARTISAN

PREGGO METAL At Preggo Metal, we found Fernando Abreu, who was almost finished polishing a mirror frame, as, at each slam of the hammer, this new piece was starting to take shape. The artisan recounted that the team started with three members and has now grown into eighteen. When asked what he likes to do the most, he answered, “different pieces, for the very first time, because the challenge lies in those”. While working constantly on pieces like the Millionaire Safe or the Lapiaz Sideboard, the team’s biggest challenge, to date, is a dining table, “it was the Empire, which was done in its entirety,” but the hardest part was, “to lean the sheet on to the furniture” We wanted to know what is the feeling to see a completed piece to which he answered: “I am proud and I feel like taking a different approach for the next time.”

This is due to the fact “that most of it has to do with manual work,” and while in some occasions they do resort to machines, they feel like “the material reacts differently.” Nevertheless, it also depends on the person who is working it.

FERNANDO ALVES ARTISAN OF PREGGO LIGHTING Besides being an artisan, Fernando Alves is the founder of Candeeiros Alves, which is now Preggo Lighting. We had the pleasure to came in and talk to Alves, who was assembling a new luminaire. “This part is where it all begins, the place where we make prototypes,” explains the artisan while in between cutting and welding machines. This is “an extremely manual system and it gives me so much joy to manufacture … nothing is automated, it’s all manual, we produce the pieces we want to produce,” specified Fernando Alves. Recalling the moment where he saw the designs exhibited in fairs, he discloses, “It gives me great pleasure to see the pieces that are made here and I enjoy seeing the reaction of visitors, because it is exceptionally positive, to listen to their comments, which, fortunately, are always quite pleasant.

PAULO JUSTO ARTISAN OF PREGGO UPHOLSTERY Amid cheerful fabrics and tropical ones, warm velvets and studs as well as foam and threads, there was Paulo Justo drawing patterns with an attentive eye. The artisan affirms, “What I like to do the most is new things”. Preggo Upholstery creates, “every type of pieces, from sofas to armchairs and chairs.” In addition, Justo told us “we have upholstered a few things here” in reference to applying fabric to sideboards and consoles. They use “all kinds of fabrics,” depending on what the client wants. Preggo Upholstery started with four members and now it has ten, “two seamstresses, six upholsterers, a fabric and a foam cutter, and Rui who is our adviser.” Paulo speaks yet about what is to come, “we are training people,” however he feels like, “there is a lack of artists ... the passion needs to be there, but the truth is there is a shortage of artists.”

NEWS & TRENDS //

COSME FERREIRA, ARTISAN

PREGGO WOOD We had the chance to encounter Cosme Ferreira, the head of the joinery, who was analysing a new sketch. With now thirteen people in his team, the artisan recollects the time, about twelve years ago, where there was only three of them, “I practically started this group,” he reminisces. “I enjoyed producing much more than commanding, but I still do produce,” he confesses while remembering the piece that gave him the most satisfaction in creating, the Diamond Sideboard. What the artisan likes the most is “to get here and have more two or three designs like this one. This is what motivates, to have work, I feel delighted to live in the midst of people who grow and grow more each time. It leaves me completely rewarded, really indeed. Fulfilled I am almost; however, there is always that one piece that makes me say, “This is the one that I hadn’t done yet! It makes me feel happy”.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JESSICA GERSTEN

Having worked in the fashion industry for several years, Jessica Gersten grew an awareness for colours, fabrics and proportion. In 2008, Gersten founded her own interior design company and through a modern eclectic style, she manages to masterfully combine the use of neutral base colours, organic shapes as well as ethnic patterns and textures while adding layers of mid-century lighting, bold sculptures and modern furniture designs. She collaborates closely with her clients in order to guarantee that each room evokes an emotion and represents their lifestyle needs. And these are just some of the reasons why her style projects a sense of distinctiveness and versatility. CovetED Magazine: Being in love with our work is always the

key to achieving better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love most about being an interior designer? GERSTEN: I absolutely LOVE this job. It was a ground-up con-

struction and a huge 100000 square feet. Each room is so special and so well thought out. I love being a designer because I get into the minds of my clients and try to bring joy and comfort into the home. CM: Do you have a favourite project or story about one of your

projects? GERSTEN: Tenafly is hands down my favorite. It’s my largest

and most passion-filled. CM: How important is a perfect chemistry between you and

your clients to achieve the best results? GERSTEN: Chemistry is everything. It’s like dating! If we have

a great rapport and similar minds the results are outstanding. CM: Do you think working with teams in interior design is bet-

ter or worse than working alone? GERSTEN: Working in a team is better. You bounce ideas off of

each other and everybody has something interesting to add to the project. CM: Keep up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who

wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends? GERSTEN: Instagram is a major source for trends and staying

current. CM: How would you describe your work style? Do you have any

kind of “signatures” that help to identify your projects? GERSTEN: I always have something with an organic feeling in

all my projects. Free-form, organic shapes and textures are my favorite. Whether a project is earthy or glamorous, I always have organic shapes included.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW //

“My favourite project was the construction of a Dental Clinic in 2015. The main building has been completely renovated over three floors (reception area, treatment level and seminar room). Previously, the clinic concept was characterised by blue tones and wood. The new concept sets the colours in white and green in the foreground, luminescent pictures as well as green moss creating a bond with nature, where patients can feel comfortable.” When it comes to luxury brands, here is what the interior designer has to say: “I love all brands of Covet House, all furniture is very modern, but also have a touch of “Art Deco”. Excellent! For old furniture, I enjoy a visit to my antique dealer. Another predilection is carpets especially carpets by Jan Kath!” Thank you, Jessica. Please continue with this amazing and original work, we, interior design lovers, truly appreciate it!

OCEAN VIEW APARTMENT BY ARRCC

Zuckerman Sachs Architects were responsible for building an astonishing Ocean View Apartment located in one of the most prestigious sites of Cape Town. The Renowned design practice, ARRCC, who has a refined approach to design highlighting especially substance and detail, conceived the stunning interior design of the three-bedroom apartment. The client of this project had a precise vision of what they wanted, a contemporary and elegant space assorted with eclectic elements and Asian design inspiration. From the moment one walks into the apartment, ARRCC’s labour of work becomes quite unmistakable, the direct access elevator gives entree to an open-plan lounge, on top of a dining and kitchen area which leads to a widespread covered terrace that provides sweeping views over the Atlantic Seaboard. Throughout the apartment, one of the main materials used was layered timber flooring which contrasts perfectly with the contemporary white Assirelli designed kitchen. The latter presents a central island in tones of grey and neolith block with a floating timber bar countertop. On the one hand, the kitchen was incorporated with OKHA leather cushioned barstools to add a masculine touch to the area, on the other hand, the client’s art collection was mounted in this space to guarantee that a sense of character would be given to this division. A timber feature panel was utilised in the dining room to divide the white linear wall. An ARRCC custom design dining table with a herringbone structure was gloriously paired with black leather dining chairs by Ding3000, resulting in an incredible homage to contemporaneity. The Design group selected David Reed’s custom glass pendants to beautifully complement the area above the table creating a vibrant and colourful ensemble. Regarding the lounge area, a striking redesigned fireplace, covered with cladding in oxidized copper panelling converts into the focal point and concedes a warm ambience. In addition, glass pocket doors harmoniously slide into the fireplace cavities, exposing a side garden and an outside terrace, well-appointed with an outdoor kitchen, an infinity pool as well as dining and living areas.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 71.

To allow the client to have outstanding coastal views, a slightly raised daybed was added to the mix and around the corner, a petite landscaped garden highlights an outdoor shower made of tree trunk and brass piping, giving origin to a tailored and private retreat. Each bedroom has its own unique set of elements. For instance, the layout of the master bedroom was shaped to allow the en-suite bathroom to open up to the bedroom completely, with glass sliding panels featuring a sandblasted mandala to ensure maximum privacy. Following a modern Zen-design aesthetic, the designers added a solid stone bath providing an utterly unique bathroom experience. Exuding a sense of a masculinity, the bedroom features a four poster bed with charcoal leather upholstery and a Piet Boon off-shutter concrete wallpaper was chosen to cover the back wall. The apartment also has two guest bedrooms that have an adjoining bathroom bounded within glass frames. Reclaimed timber cladding on the back walls with Moroccan rugs and vibrant artworks were added with the purpose of including texture and colour to these sleeping areas. “The interiors of this apartment are kept relatively simple, with the use of bold textures and varied colour pallets adding richness and masculinity, creating a unique and captivating space,” disclosed, Mark Rielly, the director of ARRCC. “ARRCC’s design elements throughout the apartment ensure a modern and sophisticated presence while strongly reflecting the personality of the home owner,” concluded Rielly.

DREAM HOLLYWOOD HOTEL BY DAVID ROCKWELL

In a tribute to Los Angeles Mid-Century Modern Architecture, the New York-based architecture firm, Rockwell Group managed by David Rockwell completed the new Dream Hollywood Hotel comprised of 178 whimsical guest rooms. The magnificent hotel is located just a stone throw’s away from the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

PROJECT //

In the design of the several areas of the contemporary hospitality venue, Rockwell Group balanced mid-century modernism with garden-inspired elements and plush upholstery, resulting in a combination of hyper-chic and comfortable components. The Lobby is characterised by an airy and double-height ambience that opens to a landscaped pedestrian alley. A garden path subtly guides guests from the entrance to the check-in and concierge area, which at night, lighting effects mimic the shadows cast by the sun, creating a beautiful panorama. The experience is further enhanced by strips of grass set between stone tile flooring and a trellis-inspired divider wall interposed with candles. Right at the end, a chandelier made from hand-blown glass globes and planters optimise the experience.

PROJECT // The majestic corridors are defined by a trellis and louvres in the ceiling lit to suggest daylight streaming through the wooden slats. A custom carpet was added to salute the idea that random, abstracted patterns would be seen when the sunlight hits the floor. The guestrooms have two colour schemes created by Rockwell Group. The first one embraces blue, white and neutral tones accented with pops of orange whereas the second one looks from the inside out and draws upon the warmer hues of a sunset. These guest accommodations were developed having in consideration a modern sense of openness. Inspired by the simplicity of the mid-century style, the spacious and glass-walled Guest House presents an oversized pivoting wood feature door and floor-to-ceiling windows which allows guests to contemplate over the most mesmerizing views of the Los Angeles cityscapes. Opening up to a landscaped terrace, the living room area can also be turned into a special and private screening room. The plush blue velvet-upholstered platform bed in the master bedroom provides a comfortable place to sleep. In an extraordinary visual effect, the sleeping area and master bathroom are divided by a gold mosaic glass. Located on the rooftop, the pool area offers an intimate and more communal seating, including raised cabanas with a retractable top and sides, two-person chaises, a lengthened daybed, and a fire pit perfect for guests to socialise. Besides all the luxurious amenities previously described, the hotel also features sophisticated restaurants and bars, such as Tao, Beauty & Essex, and the Highlight Room. As a whole, the new design of the Dream Hollywood Hotel is a glamorous addition to the Los Angeles entertainment and hospitality industries.

ONE THOUSAND MUSEUM BY ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS

The One Thousand Museum by Zaha Hadid Architects will be known for its fusion of art, architecture, and design. Over the past thirty years, the late Zaha Hadid has become an internationally renowned leading figure for her sensuous designs and soaring buildings that push the limits of innovation and blur the lines between art and architecture. Anticipated as the most prestigious residential tower in Miami, One Thousand Museum will also be the first residential skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. The One Thousand Museum boasts utterly breath-taking views of the Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The Museum brings Hadid’s visionary architecture with an unprecedented level of service and extraordinary amenities. As a whole, One Thousand Museum is a celebration of excellence, innovation, creativity, and ambition. This prestigious residential tower appears as a continuous piece of contemporary sculpture from the podium to the crown. The contrast between the robust exoskeleton and the crystalline glazing of the glass façade beneath it is one defining characteristic. The other essential distinction is the integrity with which form follows function. The tower’s fluid curves reflect its internal organisation as it rises more than sixty stories from the arrival podium to the amenity levels, the residential floors above, and finally the dramatic double height amenity space and Indoor Aquatic Centre at the crown. Shadows cast by the white exoskeleton on the recessed glass façade emphasise the interplay between the verticality of the tower and the horizontal lines of balconies.

PROJECT // At the uppermost levels, where full-floor penthouses and the crown amenity space are located, a split at each corner of the tower reveals folded glass elements. One Thousand Museum sits at the nexus of all of the most desirable destinations just minutes from South Beach and the Brickell financial district. In coming years, the immediate neighbourhood will continue to transform and become even more compelling as a result of over $10 billion of investments in premier retail, hospitality, and entertainment developments nearby. One Thousand Museum creates a six-star lifestyle within an exceptionally elegant private residential tower with over 30,000 square feet of beautifully designed venues that will pamper your senses. These subtle ambient scents are inspired by Zaha Hadid’s architectural vision as well as the lifestyle in Miami. One Thousand Museum is estimated to be fully completed by the end of 2018.

BECKERIA

BY DYER-SMITH FREY “Paying remarkable attention to detail and quality, DyerSmith Frey was responsible for the interior design of BECKERIA, a stylish bakery based in Europaallee, Zürich.” In regards to what the concept symbolizes, BECK is Swiss German for baker standing for good homemade bread, cakes, and pastries whereas RIA derives from the Italian word Galleria and stands for generous versatility under one roof. Beckeria offers a versatile culinary experience matching with the sumptuous 266 sqm interior space. Upon entering, customers are welcomed to a generous and brightly designed sales counter made of matt grey fair-faced concrete with a beautiful surface, made of natural stone, making it the centrepiece of Beckeria. To the left of the sales counter the light cereal area offers a healthy breakfast, furnished with high tables and chairs made of natural oak. On the right, dark woods, upholstered seating benches and chairs highlight the coffee house and lounge area that also contains its own Barista Bar. The black marble Grill Bar, with an attached bar counter made of anthracite-coloured concrete, founds the gastronomic bridge from lunch to dinner. The opposite high table with leather-covered bar stools is perfect for a quick lunch. A long dining table of light oak for 8 persons guarantees a convivial dinner in a warm and cosy atmosphere. An end-to-end solid wood herringbone parquet floor made of oiled light oak creatively pulls every space together. The continuous black-painted, industrial-looking ceiling contrasts with the fine materials, creating an interesting combination. The expanded metal room dividers and suspension act as structuring elements above the working areas. All the essential furniture, from the tables to shelving elements, to room dividers as well as lounge sofa were designed by DYER-SMITH FREY. The duo accomplished a harmonious and accessible interior that equals the complex concept of Beckeria.

MINIMAL MINE PROJECT BY ZOOI STUDIO

Head architects Pavel Voitov and Maxim Doshchinsky created the Zooi studio in 2013, in Kyiv city. At that moment, they were already experienced architects who specialised in doing interior design projects mostly for progressive young people and business-related individuals. The studio was responsible for the interior design of a “Minimal Mine” project whose clients were young people who want to experiment, so they consulted Zooi for their original expertise, having utter confidence in their ideas for the projects. The interior project combines one-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments. This big area is intended for a family with two little sons of ages five and seven. From the first flat, a master bedroom features a walk-in wardrobe, a working space separated from the sleeping area by a glass panel while a glass wall divides the shower from the remaining areas. The purpose of the designers with these solutions was to keep a visual appeal while adding more depth to the room. The second flat was chosen due to its lengthy character in divisions, such as the kitchen and the living room as well as two children’s rooms and a washing room. For the kids’ bedrooms, Zooi design studio conceived two extremely similar rooms while creating many different possibilities in regards to furniture and playtime areas. From the many luxurious designs of this project, an original blue armchair, copper fronts in the kitchen, white and black wall panels with stone effect clearly stand out from the crowd.

How to clean

Mid-Century modern lamps like a PRO The ultimate guide on how to clean modern lighting fixtures with tips and advice from the great experts on this industry.

First of all, even after more than two decades, why is the midcentury modern style still so popular among professional designers and design lovers around the world? The big truth is that for both veteran designers and brands, as well as those who are now entering in the Design field, collection after collection, there will always be even one piece minimally inspired in the golden age of design. However, it’s really important to note that having such pieces at home, — be it vintage or brand new — keeping them in perfect condition, as if they had just left the store, is no easy task. That’s because, in most cases, mid-century modern lamps are made with delicate products and finishes, and sometimes with relatively expensive maintenance. For all these reasons, COVETED MAGAZINE has prepared the perfect guide with the most useful clean and care tips for your lamps according to their finishes. So pay attention to the following interior design tips in order to help you make your modern lighting fixtures endure time.

2

Unscrew the articulations so the arms of your lamps move more freely. This will ensure you don’t do any permanent damage to the electrical connections.

3 Take off your light bulbs, avoiding contact with the glass part. If need be, make sure to replace them with the recommended light bulb for your lamp.

IRON, ALUMINUM, COPPER If you own lamps that are made of iron, aluminium or copper, the best way to clean them is by using a clean soft cloth and then proceed to gently wipe the lamp. Do not forget to be careful when wiping the lamp, always make gentle motions.

BRASS Brass bases are lacquered to prevent tarnishing, which means that using a brass cleaner is usually unnecessary. Still, in order to keep the finish as new, you can also use a clean and soft cloth to wipe your lamp. This will guarantee you will have a shiny and clean lamp at any room.

LACQUERED COLOURS In case you are just wondering how to clean all the colourful parts of your lamp, you should make sure to use a clean and soft white cloth. If you prefer, you can dampen your cloth with a mild solution of soapy water, as it will help to keep the dust away for longer. Remember: you must thoroughly rinse the cloth in clean water and then re-do the whole process.

MARBLE Marble can look stunningly gorgeous in almost all furniture pieces, right?! But it should be well kept in order to stay with you through the years. In this case, you can also use a clean cloth to wipe the stone. For a greater cleaning process, you may additionally dampen the cloth with a mild solution of soapy water.

The members of Medinah could enjoy a miniature golf course on the twenty-third floor; also a billiards hall, running track, gymnasium, archery range, bowling alley, two-story boxing arena, men’s smoking lounge, and other entertainments. The Club was home of the first pool built above ground into a skyscraper and one of the biggest pools in the world at that time - the iconic junior Olympic size swimming pool, where trained Johnny Weissmuller, famous Olympic athlete and actor of the 20th century! www.icchicagohotel.com

HOTEL PALAIS FARAJ & SPA FEZ, MOROCCO

Located in the heart of Fez, Morocco, in a former Arab-Moorish palace, the prestigious Palais Faraj & Spa offers a unique sense of refinement and comfort. The hospitality venue boasts magnificent views of the Medina. Built in the 19th century and renovated from 2007 to 2012, Palais Faraj is a symbol of architectural rarity, authenticity and elegance. It was designed by the proficient French architect and interior designer, Jean Baptiste Barian. Palais Faraj features thirty-two rooms, including twenty-five suites, an outdoor pool, a spa, two restaurants, two bars, a car park and a library. Each modern suite has Moroccan decor with zellige tiles. Divania and Arredo Inn were the luxury brands responsible for the decoration of the entire hotel. The spa service offers a Turkish bath, a beauty salon and massage treatments. In this space, one can enjoy a peaceful environment. The Turkish bath gives you the starting point for a relaxing experience with hot steam baths, flavoured with perfumes and essential oils. We became even more involved in the Arab atmosphere with a quintessential Hammam massage.

As previously mentioned, Palais Faraj is comprised of two restaurants, “La Terrasse” and “L’Amandier”. Featuring a series of menus prepared by chef Fatima Belatik, who often tries to bring her grandmother’s delicious recipes to the table. In addition, the breakfast served on the terrace is made from the freshest local products. Providing an intimate and extremely comfy atmosphere, the Salon bar is a great option to relax while sipping on the delicious and traditionally-made Moroccan mint tea, which is absolutely wonderful. Generally speaking, the aromas, the colours, the spices, the marble floors, the arches and columns, the stucco laces, and the sacred geometry wall zelliges are some of the predominant features that best describe the beauty of this palace. It was a truly memorable experience and we really felt a modern Moroccan contrast with a dash of European flair. www.palaisfaraj-fes.com

PALAIS HANSEN KEMPINSKI VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Among the imposing buildings that make part of the luxurious Schottenring Street in the Ringstrasse Boulevard, Vienna, we may find a very particular one. A 19th century façade with classical influences stands out, marked by the Greek goddess of victory that watches over the building, hosts the noble and high end Hotel Palais Hansen Kampinski – which name is a memorial itself to the original architect Edvard Hansen. Indeed, the listed Palais located in the first district, has been built between 1869 and 1873, planned by Heinrich Förster and Theophil Edvard Hansen, who is known as one of the most important architects of Ring Boulevard (Parliament, the Vienna Music Society...). Originally planned as a hotel for the world exhibition in 1873 in Vienna, the Palais did not actually open as such. Just in 1997, when the City of Vienna sold the building, the Palais Hansen Kempinski Immobiliengesellschaft teamed up with the Kempinski Group to start their painstaking restoration and to remodel the building into a hotel. A talented team has joined together to guarantee the legacy of the illustrious original architect, adding a contemporary 21st century touch: The Vienna-based architect Boris Podrecca and the Austrian architecture firm Atelier Hayde Architekten were contracted to carry out the work, and Interior designer Jean-Claude Laville was tasked with creating the Palais Hansen’s interior design.

The lobby’s monumental columns, the ballroom’s foyer, the 19th century window frames, the staircases with their delicately wrought cast-iron banisters and, of course, the famous façade, where kept unchanged, combining these historic elements with contemporary and innovative design. This is the most special feature about Palais Hansen Kempinski: the living history meets modern lifestyle. It represents perfectly Vienna’s Zeitgeist, well known for its fashionable coffee houses, concert halls and balls, but it is also a representation of modernity. The rooms have a classic design, Viennese elements, subtle colours and fine fabrics – all of the 98 rooms and 54 suites of Palais Hansen Kempinski offer the perfect atmosphere for every kind of stay, whether it is a business or pleasure trip, a weekend getaway or a family holiday. High ceilings, a timelessly classic 1920s and 1930s design in muted shades of brown and beige enhance the comfortable, elegant atmosphere. Truly unique are the pieces of furniture made of walnut as well as flame and bird’s-eye maple specially designed for Palais Hansen by Jean-Claude Laville. The Presidential Suit is the most spacious one in town – offering 3.450 square feet of space with elegantly appointed rooms. The interior reflects modern zeitgeist and classic design. Apart from the conservatory with its vertical gardens, the luxurious bathroom with a pleasant view of Ring Boulevard is another highlight. All rooms are equipped with an iPad entertainment system, which not only enables to manage every function in the rooms, but also allows to order room service, book spa treatments and to read daily newspapers. It is also noteworthy to highlight the two high end restaurants that make part of the Palais Hansen Kempinski: Edvard and Die Küche. Edvard, whose name is also a tribute to the famous architect of Palais Hansen – Theophil Edvard Hansen – presents a fine selection of seasonal dishes with international influences and regional products, a wine menu, rousing the guest with a new appetite, and an atmosphere, created for leaning back. Edvard’s Fresh Cuisine is aimed at getting the best possible taste out of every ingredient. The restaurant is awarded with one Michelin star and 16 Gault-Millau points. Die Küche, is also a good surprise with its International influences, Viennese classics, and laid-back atmosphere. Die Küche is the perfect venue for every time of the day. The cherry on the top of Palais Hansen Kempinski’s experience is the hotel spa. Hotel guests and day spa visitors alike will find a gym with Technogym equipment, six treatment rooms, a hydro pool, a steam room, and a bio-sauna with mixed and ladies-only areas. The spa’s design reflects Vienna’s location on the border between Western and Eastern Europe, sporting Viennese 1920s-style glass art as well as Ottoman-style lamps, mosaics and wooden folding screens. HOTEL EDOUARD VII PARIS, FRANCE

When you are walking through Paris streets, it’s impossible not to notice the display windows, almost shouting fashion standards. And if you choose to take a promenade near Opéra, you’ll be surprised to find Edouard VII, an exquisite reference in what concerns Parisian stylish hotels. As soon as you take the first steps inside the hotel, you are immediately aware of the bold decoration in a mix of nineteenth-century style with contemporary elements. As a matter of fact, the entire theme is about ‘Couture’, an artistic concept that evokes the quality fashion. It’s not surprising to discover that each setting was projected as if it was a mannequin to be elegantly dressed, considering Edward VII’s personality, life, history, travels, loves and lovers. Usually people aren’t aware about the grandiosity of the building: it is composed by 42 bedrooms, occupying the first four floors of the hotel. Among them, we highlight the 13 superior bedrooms, as well as the 14 Deluxe bedrooms and the two suites, followed by an elegant junior suite. It’s also surprising to know that each floor represents a precious stone: as the first represents sapphire (shades of blue) the second represents emerald (nuances of green), the third ruby (shades of red and deep pink) and the fourth citrine, with lots of yellow.

HOTELS WE COVET //

Idealized by Christophe Daudré, the new collection of bedrooms mixes French contemporary style with British influences. Dive into the spirit of each room, which whispers sensuality, as well as an indiscreet touch inspired by the nineteenth century vibe. We can’t deny that there is a feminine note in the design of the spaces and corners. As a matter of fact, that is illustrated in the dressing room, which reveals a sense of impertinence that is always present in the decoration of Edouard VII.

We can assist to a mix of materials regarding Christophe Daudré’s highly stylish furniture creations, such as the Prince of Wales chair and the Kashmir rugs. In what concerns the general atmosphere, at Edouard VII you can feel a colorful, cozy and chic environment. Couture is, indeed, the great statement and the signature of this breathless fashion hotel. www.hoteledouard7-paris.fr/

NOLINSKI

PARIS, FRANCE When we imagine Paris, the reflex of our imaginary never resembles reality. But, in this particular matter, that’s something positive: the vibrant colours, the constant coming and going, the intermittent streets and the fragrances that powder the city are unimaginable and surpass all the hypothetic world of sensations that we can idealize in our abstract projection. It’s not unusual to often listening to the eternalized expression by Audrey Hepburn, “Paris is always a good idea”. Indeed, it is. This because there are always new things happening in a city that never stops: either events, either a new coffee or bookstore, or a new hotel to discover. And that’s when Nolinski shows up, in an ideal localization, once Ópera completes the backdrop and respects strictly the street’s name. There is something magic as soon as we enter on Nolinski. The imposing façade instigates the more alienated of the transients and the doorman, with its instantaneously courtesy, conducts us through the distinguished corridor. In the reception, we receive the key information and the director welcomes us warmly, with attention and kindness. As soon as we climb the elevator until the desired floor and when the door is open, we realize immediately the attention to the detail, the conjugation of the majestic corners with a distinct simplicity and the omnipresent existence of an inenarrable comfort. We open the doorways, and the entire city invades us, as if suddenly it was also part of us. For a moment, even for seconds, we were Paris itself. As soon as we recover the feelings still staggering, we realize the exquisite decoration of the surrounding area, or it wasn’t Jean Louis Deniot’s signature always present. Decorative objects, such as a Marshall radio, grab our attention, as well as a personal welcoming note with Parisian pastry gently displayed. We couldn’t feel more special. We also took the chance of experiencing the spa installations,

FASHION WEEKS

PORTUGAL FASHION The fashion weeks show us the collections for the next season, the next trends, and have a fundamental priority to communicate and transmit the new trends of the creators, where the new collections are presented and displayed.

FASHION //

The international focus of Portugal Fashion is one of the main lines behind the project and undoubtedly one of the most importants. It’s all about the promotion of the national image, design and trends, affirming itself as a reference of creativity and aesthetic sophistication from Portugal to the exterior. In addition to the internationalization, one of the focus is to communicate the young creators as another of the strategic pillars of Portugal Fashion. By complementing the main, Bloom undercovers the creations on the young designers.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 135.

With the Invicta shows, Portugal Fashion finishes presenting the Spring / Summer collections that went through London, New York, Paris, Milan, and Lisbon. The four days of the 42Âş edition achieved thirty-three fashion shows, with proposals from seventeen designers, eight young designers, twelve students from six fashion schools, five clothing brands and six footwear brands. The trends for the hot season were revealed by Diogo Miranda, Miguel Vieira, Nuno Baltazar, Susana Bettencourt, Dielmar, Lion of Porches, LuĂs Buchinho, Micaela Oliveira, Hugo Costa, Julio Torcato, Luis Onofre, Ana Sousa, among others.

FASHION //

Exuberance, sophistication, sensuality and exaggerated proportions, the blend of classic tailoring with the technique of competitive performance materials, oversized sleeves, ruffles, bulky ties and necklines that leave the shoulders exposed are the big bets of the creators for the next season. Pastel pink, curry, orange, pink fuchsia, gray, black caviar, red, raw blue, white, materialize the season trends, assuming the role of a sophisticated, confident, sexy and feminine woman.

Modernity and romance tell the story of a mature, modern and sensual woman. The next season draws light, with expressive prints that underline loose and long silhouettes, which exalts an irreverent, cosmopolitan and confident men and women who appreciate elegance as well as relaxation. The nudity is softly revealed by the lightness of the transparencies, the embroidery, the lace, the applications of layers, the vibrant colors, the structured and fluid fabrics, simple pieces contrasting with elaborate materials, the silks, marking the trends for the next season. Spring Summer 2018 proposes a modern lifestyle where there are space and openness to new horizons coupled with a spring and sweet palette.

Defining what makes an art gallery one of the world’s best is not an easy task and might not be consensual. But one thing we are sure is that a wonderful gallery has the power to continually challenge the way things have been done in the past, it is by reinventing the concept of what’s within the gallery walls or supporting the next generation of artists who will change culture forever. Sometimes they even embrace some kind of political work, but always with the one purpose that is: celebrate art. And that’s precisely what makes the following art galleries the world’s best ones.

We felt that this Italian idiosyncrasy was impregnated a bit all over the restaurant and the sommelier was no exception: he served each wine gently, always explaining the concept behind each one with its charming Italian accent. We felt that we couldn’t be better welcomed as we were and we definitely intend to come back due not only to the quality of dishes but also to the receptivity of the team. You will find out Brace in a small street, in Teglgårdstræde 8a, where you can also discover some trendy spots of the city. Regarding decoration, Brace has an industrial interior, with dimmed lighting and smooth, relaxing music in the background. LE V, VERNET PARIS, FRANCE

Under its monumental stained glass dome designed by the famous Gustave Eiffel, The V Restaurant, from The Vernet Hotel, is a space that can awaken all our senses. Located in a sumptuous Parisian building, truly “Haussmann” style, with a nearly perfect location between the Golden Triangle of Paris and the Place de l’Etoile on the Champs-Elysées, it is possible to identify a completely contemporary look created by the designer of interiors François Champsaur. With a century of history, the harmonious interior seeks to pay homage to the Parisian elegance and the French craftsmanship from which it is impossible to look away. The kitchen is available for the more curious, with a large window that gives access to the room, glimpsing the discreet process of creating each dish. Around the room, we are drawn to the original and contemporary works of art that adorn it, with the feeling that we are in a space of a true lover of art. All this, mixed with the palate of each of the dishes that make up the menu, create an absolutely addictive junction. In each one, you can see the origin and quality of each of the ingredients used, even for the most demanding palates. They are absolutely innovative combinations of exquisite flavours reinvented to rediscover the best of traditional French and international cuisine. If we leaf through the menu, the offers are very appealing to our senses. For starters, The Foie Gras marinated with Porto, fried fig and home-made bread is a perfect choice. As the main course, one can challenge senses with The Deer’s Back, roasted in cocoa nibs, artichoke and roasted salsify in horseradish butter. If you prefer fish, the Risotto Carnaroli will make your delights, among other amazing choices. As a dessert, the soft yet tasty Pavlova, with seasonal fruits, lemon cream and red fruits ice cream or The Peach, with panacotta, compote and fresh peach. For all of the above, this tasteful restaurant made its way as a member of Design Restaurants. For anyone who visits Paris, the Le V is the obvious choice!

CAP HORN

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

The Cap Horn is a Danish restaurant placed in one of the most touristic places in Copenhagen, the Nyhavn area. The location turns this restaurant into a great stop to be mesmerised by the sweeping views and the energy behind the multiple canal boat tours all over the city. Cap Horn was the first organic restaurant in Denmark, but before this, it had another and very colourful history. Cap Horn is exceptional for its charming interior and its high-quality ingredients, most of which are organic. Specialities include freshly caught fish, free-range lamb and steaks. Cap Horn is open for both lunch and dinner, with the latter having the option to sit out on the cobbled quayside (with a blanket in case of chilly winds) or inside Cap Horn’s historic, perfectly restored premises, with its dark wood panelling and leather-backed seats. Nyhavn is a historic area full of many beautiful buildings, and in one of them, you will find Cap Horn. Nyhavn was built in the 1670s and was originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area was packed with sailors, pubs, and alehouses and it was the place where the world famous children’s author Hans Christian Andersen lived for most of his life. Today, Nyhavn is a popular spot for both Copenhageners and tourists who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere by the canal, jazz music, drinks and the many different restaurants along the cobble stoned street. Cap Horn is one of the few places in Nyhavn, which has kept its original appearance. The old wooden floors, the fireplace, the different chairs, and plates, as well as the curious knick-knacks here and there, all have a story to tell and contribute to the special atmosphere of the restaurant. The beautiful, old building, which used to be a hang-out for thirsty sailors and women of easy virtue, was in the 1990’s transformed into a restaurant with a focus on organic produce. Cap Horn has since maintained this organic mindset and all of the ingredients are carefully selected based on quality and with consideration for the country’s climate. Once you get in the Cap Horn, you may feel you are back to the old times. The restaurant is also proud to say that there is a special area where many happy couples were asked to marry. They call it the marriage area. A very cosy corner next to the fireplace. In the 2nd floor, the restaurant is the place where such marriages long parties happen. There are even couples that get back to the restaurant to celebrate years of being together.

On the first floor is a charming banqueting room with wooden floors and small-paned windows. French doors divide this beautiful room, which is frequently used for festive gatherings. In front of Cap Horn is the lovely patio, where you can enjoy the view of old wooden ships along with a delightful meal composed by the skilled chefs. The restaurant is also prepared for hosting parties and conferences, meetings and events for both small and larger groups. The capacity is up to fifty guests. You can even put together your own party menu from the party menu material the restaurant provides. Visiting the restaurant is the way you will get the best dining offers in Copenhagen. Every day the chefs at Cap Horn prepare dishes based on the seasonal offerings of fresh produce. All of the ingredients must live up to a high standard of quality and organic produce is preferred. All of the basic ingredients are organic and Cap Horn also has a large selection of organic vegetables and meat. The coffee, tea and the majority of the wine and beer selection also come from organic suppliers. Besides being the first organic restaurant in town, the Cap Horn is also related to the environmental issues, receiving every year Green Piece conferences. In fact, they have Every Saturday and

Sunday, a Climate Friendly Brunch buffet at Cap Horn. From 10 AM until 1 PM you can taste salads with seasonal vegetables, pies, cheese, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausages, yoghurt, compote, sourdough bread and cake. The menu in Cap Horn is inspired by the French and Scandinavian cuisine. One of the classic dishes is a pan-fried in butter and served with new potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and a butter sauce. During lunch hours the chefs prepare another Danish classic, smørrebrød. These traditional open-faced sandwiches can be found in an endless variety. They are usually served cold, with buttered rye bread on the bottom and on top the preferred variety of fish or meat and garnishes. When properly combined, the topping should blend harmoniously with the bread, butter, and garnishes, rather than compete for attention. The wonderful hostesses will meet you with a smile and you will always feel welcome, whether you want to enjoy a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, a main course or a full menu. It’s a complete experience with the taste and view of a lifetime.

And although the concept of Restaurant Cofoco has been heavily replicated by themselves and copied by others, the original remains the favourite of the lot for many. That concept is one of fine but wallet-friendly gastronomy served up in pleasant surroundings, achieved by cutting any cost that won’t compromise the food quality. That means multiple dinner settings, occasionally shared tables, friendly but minimal service, and a carefully edited menu for scale, and, in this case, all the dishes coming in starter-sized portions. Located in Chicago’s Streeterville neighbourhood, GreenRiver is the Michelin-starred restaurant by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. Featuring one of the lengthiest outdoor terraces in the whole city, the award-winning venue provides classical and unobstructed views of Lake Michigan and the city’s downtown skyline. The menu is conceived by Executive Chef Aaron Lirette and is intensely based in the Midwestern approach. It represents Chicago’s culinary past and present, with a refined twist of modern gastronomy techniques. COVETED MAGAZINE was completely immersed in GreenRiver’s seasonal flavours and sustainable ingredients, from the sumptuous entrée, Whitefish Tartine with egg, radishes and celery to the appetizing main dish, Saffron Spaghetti with Uni Sauce, Clams, Cherry Tomatoes. In regards to desserts, the Chocolate Paris Breast is unquestionably an excellent option. Amit Gilad was named head bartender for his diverse background in developing the most creative and innovative cocktails. GreenRiver recently launched a new 22-cocktails menu, with each cocktail expressing a mouth-watering narrative. The menu was divided into four mood-driven categories: Refresh, Contemplate, Indulge, and Savor.

It was cleverly created to ensure that guests are encouraged to order “in the moment”, this way, it’s their current state of mind that will guide the decision. GreenRiver’s valuable cocktail menu features eight sections organised by the raw materials used for distilling spirits, and complemented by an approachable wine list and twelve beers on tap, primarily from Chicago breweries. Our suggestions fall upon the delicious Epiphany which contains rum, Liquore Strega, Falernum, Branca Menta, Pineapple, Turmeric, Lime, or the Mahajara cocktail which highlights a delightful combination of Sipsmith Gin, Amaro Montenegro, Royal Combier, Combier Rose Liqueur, Orgeat, Falernum, Cardamom, Chocolate, Lemon, and Teapot Bitters. As a whole, GreenRiver offers a wide variety of possibilities, certifying that no guest leaves the premises disappointed or thirsty, and providing each guest with a deep and personal connection. From its inception in September 2015, GreenRiver has already received one Michelin star, three stars from the Chicago Tribune, four stars from Crain’s Chicago Business.
