MAISON ET OBJET PA R I S 2 0 2 0
INTRODUCTION Maison & Objet as the first design event of the year brings with it many new collections and collaborations from famous brands, new concepts and emerging designers showcasing their works. This year’s event we spotted many trends with innovations in materials and product design and new ways of thinking in terms of home decoration. As designers tend toward more eco-friendly options, nature’s influence is shown in the way the spaces are presented and the materials used in production. There’s a increasing use of wood in the year ahead. From light to grayed, the material was a popular choice among designers, who foresaw it being used to “warm up” interiors. A sensory experience is craved on objects that surround us as a counterbalance to be in contact with a digital surface most of the day. We crave for touch with surfaces that are soft, raw, porous, and stimulate our senses when in touch. Curvy lines, tactile surfaces and deep tones of blue and green combine to create warm and relaxing interiors, with contrasting textures and a touch of glamour. This trends more than a way of decoration represent a shift in thinking at a moment in which society is growing increasingly environmentally and ethically conscious.

F LU I D S H A P E S Curved shapes were one of the biggest trends that marked the design style of the ’60s and 70’s. However, this decor trend has now reached rugs, upholstery and even suspension lamps. The continued softening of interiors with curvy shapes and organic, rounded edges, are another way of embracing the relaxed feel. In the past few years, we have seen a lot of sofas, chairs and benches with ruler-straight lines and sleek, simple contours. For 2020 though, those pieces are out in favor of furniture with non-symmetrical shapes and playful curves, and rugs whose graphics reflect that trend.

N E U T R A L C O LO R S The obsession for purity, stillness and calmness at home is translated in soft toned textiles, simple textures and a organic feel. Clients are responding to authentic materials and highly tactile textures. BouclÊ is making a comeback as it’s soft and cocooning touch exudes calmness. Other natural materials such as leather and wool and a preference for lighter woods finish this decor trend.

B O L D C O LO R S Bold colors have been coming back in the last few years and are making for some spectacular schemes in product design. More than solid colors what we see emerging is an iridescent sprectrum used in glass and acrylic. Color wise the 70’s are making a return in the form of beautiful muted bold colors, with the re-appearence of lots of yellows, greens and oranges in soft earthy palettes. This comforting color palette is a hymn to nostalgia and our inner wellbeing as it’s a color scheme that appears in nature. Pantone’s color of the year for 2020 is Classic Blue and at Maison&Objet this choice has not been forgotten, we saw this specific color pop up mainly in decoration.

V E G E TA B L E F I B E R S Taking back to simpler times with less technology and a growing sensitivity to the world around us, designers are embracing handmade products and celebrating traditional craftsmanship. Top brands displayed raw, handcrafted sculptures and design objects consisting of materials like wood and ceramic. There’s been a significant upturn in the release of artisanal collections and throughout the fair products made in rattan, woven and cane furniture were widely showcased. As designers tend toward more eco-friendly options, renewable and recyclable materials are more lightweight, inexpensive and warm.

E M B R AC I N G N AT U R E AT H O M E Plants are certainly not a new interior design trend, but they are becoming more of a feature than ever before, as people realize the health benefits they offer. With a diminished connection to nature, the increasing pressure on urban space & the technological presence we have less opportunity to recuperate our mental and physical energy. Biophilic design is a way of innovatively designing and incorporating the nature into the places we live, work and learn. At this year’s Maison & Objet references to the natural world were a common theme, be it for staging or in product design.

A R T I N S P I R E D M OT I F S Creating custom works remains a priority for designers. For those who yearn to have their home interiors really stand out, furnishings need to be more than just pretty. The trend for luxury and rich expression is obvious when it comes to the patterns and creative motifs shown in textiles this year. One trend that we can’t miss is the use of facial features in art and decorative accessories. Surreal, distorted or recomposed, the human face appears again and again in a multitude of products. This is a movement for creatives, artists and social activists, used for political messaging and bold statements. Looks are seen mimicking a pop art painting you might see from Andy Warhol. Fringes and the playful layering of decorative patterns create a theatrical influence.
