o this is it…our August issue. i am so very excited about this issue because it’s the first of what I’m now calling our “Facelift” issue. Trendfrenzy has taken on a whole new team and we are gonna rock your socks off with our beautifully designed pages, our new look website, our beefed up content and our gangster new Marketing mob. With that said I think I have found exactly what I’d like to write to you about in this month’s editor’s letter. A really good team of people is a really good idea if you are looking to succeed. I’m not the only one who will tell you that either…you will see it written in our Nextgen article even by some of SA’s most successful people. The fact is that we are all born with talents, things that come naturally to us…but not one of us is capable of being perfect at everything. If you can pull together a team of people each with their own set of awesome skills and create synergy…ah well then you have the perfect recipe because suddenly you have an entity that covers all its bases. I think I am also learning that making real connections with people “Networking” for lack of a better word, is key to any success. You want to grow your pool of contacts because you just never know when you may need to call in a favour. In the same breath…don’t just make connections to use people, be sure that you are willing to collaborate and assist the other person too. Give and take people…don’t be a user and abuse your connections please. Mostly though…enjoy the journey on the way to realising your dreams. I have realised that panic and worry will kill your dreams and your ability to think straight. Just have fun with what you are doing and believe in your abilities. Your belief in yourself will ensure that others have confidence in you and your skill sets too. So that’s my very deep message for this issue. Hehehe. I hope you love what we have done with this issue as much as we all enjoyed putting it together for you.

1. You are a brand ambassador for USN & Curves. Those are both really great fitness brands. How did you get involved with them? was also one of those people that had no interest at all in health and fitness. And what eventually happens to most people that don’t lead an overall healthy lifestyle? They can pick up to 500g of fat per month! You do the matheventually you find yourself overweight with no idea how you’ve let yourself go to that extent! My husband studied personal training, and he’s the one that saw I needed a major lifestyle change to get my confidence back on track. We started following the USN 12week body makeover challenge and exercising together every single day and off course preparing our healthy meals together. I managed to lose an astonishing 14.7kgs during the challenge! I was addicted to my new found healthy lifestyle. I entered the Mrs SA pageant and managed to place 2nd! I then also had to fulfil the winner’s duties by competing in The MRS World pageant in China when she fell ill with chicken pox just days before the pageant, and managed to place in the top 10 as well! But my biggest accomplishment throughout all of this was becoming an USN Ambassador. This gave me a platform to reach out to other women going through the same issues as I went through, and to teach them the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, not only what it can do for your self-esteem, but also your overall quality of

life in the long run. I have been a speaker at various women’s congresses on health and fitness such as Womentality and Kyknet’s Vonkelvrou. Being an ambitious business women, I was looking for ways to further extend this platform and saw an opportunity in buying my very own Curves Women’s Gym Franchise in Olympus, Pretoria East. Now I get to help women on a daily basis change their health status, their bodies, their lifestyle and ultimately their self-esteem! At Curves we combine a unique 30min workout, together with a personalized meal plan and a daily personal trainer that also tracks your progress on a weekly basis! All this for a normal membership fee that you would pay at any conventional gym, no extra costs! So now there’s no more excuses for women not to jump on the healthy wagon!

2. Could you tell us what is expected of you as an ambassador of brands like these? I get to incorporate the products and services into my daily lifestyle, and give honest feedback on my experience or outcome to anyone that might be looking for something in that field, but without wasting their time and/or money due to falling for false advertising gimmicks. And also really just to practice what I preach and to be an example of a healthy lifestyle! All the ambassadors have normal full time jobs, and/ or are parents, enjoys leisure time and family time like most people, but what makes us different is that we don’t use

our daily activities or ‘time’ as an excuse not to get to the gym or not to eat healthy. We aspire to motivate people on all platforms, to be the best possible version of themselves that they can be!

3. What would you say is one of the most popular fitness trends right now and do you currently follow it? The biggest trends right now would be Crossfit and Banting. I don’t follow either one of these trends because I believe in number 1: Safety first and number 2: Do what you enjoy. I believe that both these trends are not sustainable, and might cause you hating fitness or dieting and even cause more damage than good in the long run. Fitness and health should be a LIFESTYLE, and you should really enjoy it, it shouldn’t feel like a chore. I enjoy spending time outdoors, hiking, cycling, swimming and then of course I enjoy weight lifting with my husband. We use this time to break away from our busy daily lives and it really helps us unwind and relax.

4. As a model you are required to always look amazing, how do you stay motivated to keep fit? My husband keeps me extremely motivated with his profound love for being healthy and fit, and we love to spend some quality time together prepping our food and even set our gym time in as a date! I also like to set small goals for myself, when I reach those goals Ill set new ones, it could be anything from

increasing my fitness or strength, for example I would do 10 pull ups instead of 6, or try and do something I’ve never done before to challenge myself. (My Initial goal was to only be able to do 1 pull-up!!) Everybody had to start somewhere. As a model I constantly have a photo-shoots booked a week or two in advance that I have to be in shape for, so the summary is to set small goals and always have a DEADLINE!

5. What is your favourite fashion trend at the moment? Braids, crop tops and ripped jeans! Love that fashion is becoming effortless, natural, time effective and more comfortable for women.

6. What is your one must have, go to beauty product, the one you can’t live without? The new USN Collagen + CLA combined drink. The CLA helps to combat stubborn belly fat and also helps my body to have a more toned and firm look. The Collagen has helped my skin’s appearance to be more glowing and youthful, and my hair and nails just won’t stop growing! And best of all it has replaced my cravings for a daily fizzy drink, the taste is absolutely divine! (almost like orange Tropica

7. What are some of your passions outside of modelling and fitness? Music! My husband is also known as the South African Rapper, Weez. He has recorded with international hiphop artists like Cypress Hill and he has had 2 number1 hits on radio

stations like 5FM and Highveld stereo. I really think our shared love for music is what brought us together. I love it how music can instantly determine or change your mood! Like if you have to push yourself harder during a workout, or when you’re in love, or how a song can instantly bring back memories from any phase in your life! Music speaks directly to your soul.

8. Any advice for aspiring models? Don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable with. You only get one chance to build your empire, make it great. Choose your audience wisely as this will assist you in determining the direction you want your career to go in. (Eg, sleazy Instagram stalkers- by posting endless underwear selfies, which is probably bound to let your career reach an immediate dead-end, OR young business women- by going for castings at SA Fashion week or makeup/fashion editorials) And lastly, please stay humble if you make it in the industry! A bad reputation spreads faster than a snotty nose in a nursery school.

BECAUSE YOUR BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE. I have had my fair share of body issues, I admit I have never been over weight, or had any ‘real’ problems with my body but that doesn’t mean I have always accepted my body. I have always looked up to celebrities and models, and being short and pear shaped, having skin problems myself, I have never felt up to the ‘standard’ of how someone in the limelight’s should look. I always wanted to be in the entertainment and fashion industry but until recently I have never felt confident enough that I am able to because I was convincing myself that I need to look a certain way. I am joining the movement to change the idea of how a .celebrity or model should look and not to change how we look

i

’m sure lately you have noticed the ‘new’ movement about accepting our bodies, and curvy woman are just as sexy as skinny woman. I am so excited that we can finally start accepting our differences and embrace them. Lately the fashion industry has been more open to different looking models, be it tattooed, curvy, short or even people with skin conditions. It’s a huge step closer to allowing girls to accept

their differences and embrace them instead of hiding them. We will finally be able to find inspiration in magazines, see how people with bigger thighs, or smaller boobs or frizzy hair, skin conditions or cellulite can be beautiful too. I want to remind you of a little something we all actually know but never really accept. Those models you see on the

covers of magazines with the airbrushed skin, perfect shaped bodies, the celebrities with amazing thick flowing hair and pore-less skin- Half of that is fake or edited. We forget that photographers edit the photo to look perfect, not lifelike, people wear makeup to cover blemishes to look perfect not realistic. It’s not because those people aren’t beautiful, it’s because we have been so conditioned to think that that is how we should look and everything else is disgusting and frowned upon. So when we actually see what people really look like with no makeup or extensions or heavy editing, we judge it so harshly and plaster it all over the internet and magazines and shame them for how badly they obviously take care of themselves, and how they have let themselves go. Instead of all the negative comments we should look at those people and see ourselves in them. You need to look in the mirror and see yourself and celebrate everything about yourself the good and the bad. We need to start embracing everything that people like to call flaws, and all our differences. Everything that makes us our unique and amazing selves. Because as long as we measure our selves by the standard set by edited magazine covers, and as long as we give power to other people over how we feel about ourselves and our self worth we will never be able to accept what real people look like. The day you start accepting your body, your shape, your flaws, and the day you start loving yourselves and others is the day your beauty will truly shine. I found some powerful videos that might help change the way we are wired. Beautiful people, accepting their true selves.

Tequila story BY RoElz HoNEYSHINE

I am a tequila girl- there is no two ways about it... Olmeca Extra Aged (the black label) is my favourite as it is so smooth, its been aged for 18 months in 200 litre white American oak ex-Bourbon casks ! No wonder it tastes so great!

H

ave you ever wondered how tequila is made??.... It’s quite an interesting process an definitely give you something to talk about when you have your next shot....

Under Mexican law, tequila must be made by a CRT-certified location in one of five Mexican states. Most of the distilleries that meet these requirements are located in Jalisco. Blue Agave plants are cultivated on plantations and take about 8-10 years to fully mature and produce honey within its piña. The Agave harvester, known as the “Jimador,” manually removes the piña, by clearing the leaves and thorns with a coa(tool) The piña hearts are split open and steamed in large pressure cookers or stoves, the cooking transform starches into sugars. The resulting liquids flow into large steel vats for fermentation, where yeasts are added to turn the liquids into alcohol – a similar process used to make wine.... When fermentation is complete, the liquid then undergoes a double distillation process. The first distillation will remove all the bad alcohols and other impurities. A second distillation determines the percent of alcohol the tequila will have. All Tequila is colourless when it comes out . A Blanco (silver tequila) is agave in its purest alcohol form, it is then diluted with distilled water to achieve the desired 80 proof, it then becomes “Reposado” after ageing a min. of two months in large wooden tanks. Gold Tequila that is not 100% Agave is artificially darkened with caramel colouring. Super-Premium (“Añejo” )Tequila is aged longer in oak barrels. Like wine, the complexity and flavour is enhanced with age. There are several ways to enjoy this wonderful “cactus nectar”

How to drink it: I do my black tequila straight up but not all bars stock it.. if there is only gold I opt for body-shots. Your lemon is held in your partner’s mouth and the salt put on their body somewhere.... You lick the salt off of them, take your shot and then eat the lemon out of their mouth. When there is only silver, I add a but with a bit of Tabasco in the bottom(the Mexican asshole) finish it off with a slice of pineapple (if available) for the ultimate taste sensation! My favourite cocktail- the Margarita - is very easy to make:

INgREdIENTS 2 tots tequila, 1 tot triple sec, 1 tot lime juice GARNISH your glass rim with salt and lime wheel

mETHod: Shake all ingredients and strain into saltrimmed glass. In summer its lovely over crushed ice!

8 OF THE MOST TERRIFYING PLACES IN SA

1. Africana library - Kimberty The Africana Library, previously known as the Kimberly Public Library, was built in 1882. Bertrand Dyer worked there in the 1900s and was the city’s first qualified librarian. Unfortunately, he was caught committing fraud and committed suicide in the library building. Apparently his ghost can often be seen, still in his Victorian attire, pacing the halls of the library and rearranging the books on the shelves. The librarians say that if ever a book needs to be found, they simply have to ask Dyer and the book will suddenly fall off the shelf…

2. Tokai Forest – Cape Town story has it, many years ago, Frederick Eksteen, son of the owner of the Tokai Manor House, was dared to ride his horse up the stairs and into the dining room during a ‘spirited’ New Year ’s Eve bash, resulting in the horse startling and Frederick falling to his death. Legend has it that nowadays a ghostly horseman is often seen and heard galloping around the forest, especially on New Year’s Eve.

١

3. Nottingham Road Hotel – Kwazulu Natal Nottingham Road Hotel in the Midlands Meander is said to be home to a beautiful female ghost called Charlotte. Charlotte was allegedly killed under mysterious circumstances in the 1800s, either being thrown or jumping off the balcony of her room. Locals, hotel guests and even passers-by have reportedly had encounters with Charlotte – making her one of the most “famous” ghosts in South Africa. She apparently glides through the halls of the hotel, rearranges flowers, moves mirrors and even unpacks the bags of some visitors.

4. The castle of good Hope – Cape Town The Castle of Good Hope is one of the oldest colonial buildings in South Africa, and once housed convicts, many of whom were executed on the grounds. It is said to now be home to several restless spirits. Visitors to the castle have reported hearing ghostly footsteps, seeing flickering lights, hearing strange voices and even sighting a two meter tall figure, a black dog and the spectre of the castle’s first official hostess, Lady Anne Barnard.

5. Kemptons Haunted Hospital – Johannesburg The story of the abandoned Kempton Park Hospital is quite the mystery. The hospital closed down suddenly in the late 1990’s and has never been reopened. Visitors say that it appears as if everyone literally stood up from what they were doing and walked out, never to return. There are jars of kidneys on the floor, blood spattered sheets on hospital beds, open files and x-rays strewn across tables. Of course, it is alleged that the hospital is haunted and visitors are purported to have heard babies crying, doors opening and shutting and to have seen the figure of a man roaming the halls. Some visitors who tried to take photos inside found afterwards that the photos were obscured by a strange white ‘sheen’.

6. The uniondale hitchhiker – Uniondale Just outside of Uniondale, one can allegedly see the ghost of Maria Roux hitchhiking along the R62. Maria is said to have died in a car crash on Easter Sunday in 1968. Ever since, the dark-haired ghost of Maria has been seen standing near the scene of the accident, waiting for passing cars to pick her up. When a car does stop, she enters the car with a shrill laugh but disappears a few km’s into the journey,

leaving only the scent of apple blossoms in her wake.

7. The old gaol – grahamstown Years ago Grahamstown was known for its martial law and held public beatings and hangings. Those who were sentenced to death were shackled and led from the Old Gaol to the military parade ground and hanged for all to see. The last person known to be publicly hanged in this manner was Henry Nicholls, who was convicted of rape in 1862. It is now said that his spirit can be seen walking the dead man’s walk between the Old Gaol and the gallows, passing right by the entrance to the university.

8. lord milner Hotel – Klein Karoo Matjiesfontein is host to the most haunted place in South Africa – the Lord Milner Hotel, which was built in1899. Laughter can be heard in empty rooms and the sound of billiards being played is heard when there is no one there. The ghosts said to haunt the halls of Lord Milner includes a 19-year old Boer Nurse, and James Logan, the original town founder. In the town itself, the spectre of a wounded British soldier with his arm in a sling and a bloody bandage around his head is said to be seen standing at the turn-off to the Memorial Cemetery.

Trendfrenzy was at the opening of this amazing brands Sandton City store opening, surrounded by some of SA’s Top Celebs. Yes fashionista’s…if you are looking for some top shelf fashion this is the store for you. We were like kids in a candy store. Take a look at the pics…there really is no need to say more.

TO BANT OR NOT TO BANT...

i

always find it interesting and exciting to learn about new trends in health and wellness so here are some basics on this banting craze- if you want to give it a try..... please note I am no expert and if something does not make you feel good dont do it! Do your own research and decide whats best for your body and lifestyle! It started for me when I bought a book called Low carb is lekker, I found it so informative... I always knew carbs were bad but not to this extent.... then my friend Angie told me about the Banting diet and I decided to look into it a bit more– not for weight loss but just overall health improvement as I have a gluten intolerance and banting seems to cut a lot of that out... I borrowed her book by Tim Noakes, The real meal revolution, and set off on a journey of discovery...

cut out carbs completely as Carbohydrates are your ‘energy food’. They control blood sugar levels and keep them stable, which is an important part of health- so keep the good carbs. Most dieticians and health professionals agree on the need to avoid sugar, salt, processed foods and refined carbohydrates(white flour) and the need to have more whole foods – so I suggest start with that as your main dietary guidelines.... I try to follow the banting rules but am not too strict on myself..... I would say we bant 3-4 times a week and the rest of the time I break a rule here and there.... I have seen an improvement in my “muffin top” and feel like I have more energy so I will continue on this journey. Banting Steps –

Firstly lets start at the beginning... the diet is named after William Banting - a notable English undertaker in the early 19th century in St. James’s Street, London. He was a funeral director to the Royal Household itself. Maybe being surrounded by death and also suffering from obesity he took a look at his health and diet and he is known for being the first to popularise a weight loss diet based on limiting intake of refined and easily digestible carbohydrates. His diet influenced contemporary physicians and scientists like Prof Tim Noakes, which lead to investigating low-carb diets.

1st step: Learn what to avoid- the rest will then slowly fall into place as you start finding substitutes-----

Currently the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is investigating Prof Tim Noakes for “unprofessional conduct”- he basically advised a lady online to put her child on a low carb high fat diet..... Tim Noakes’ critics say low-carb diets are proven not to work and saturated fat is proven to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease- the hearing has been postponed to November 23 this year. Please read this article: http://www. news24.com/MyNews24/On-Tim-Noakes-andBullsht-20140113

Beans (dried) & Peanuts

So there are arguments for and against this dietyou are going to have to make up your own mind.. in the meantime do your own research and don’t

Pastas, noodles, Rice, Rice cakes – my next step will be to make a pasta from coconut flour.. and I use cauliflower as rice... if I have to use rice I only

AVOID the following as much as you can: All flours from grains - wheat flour, cornflour, rye flour, barley flour, pea flour, rice flour etc & goods baked from these grains... yes stay away from bread, cakes, biscuits, confectionery, battered foods – if you are gluten intolerant like me then you are already cutting this out anyway..... Then obviously all grains - wheat, oats, barley, rye, amaranth, quinoa, couscous

Brans, Buckwheat & Breakfast cereals, muesli, granola... you going to have to make your own cereal... there are loads of substitutes availablemake batches and store them in airtight containers Corn products – popcorn (damn!!!!!!- I still cheat with this one), polenta, corn thins, maize Crackers, cracker breads

use brown.... Thickening agents such as gravy powder, maize starch or stock cubes Beer, cider , sodas – limit alcohol intake if you are trying to loose weight – stick to drinks with least sugar Cheese spreads, commercial spreads (all the added stuff is a no no) Avoid eating too much dairylimit your cheese intake, use whole milk and double cream yoghurt, cream & butter (YAY) Coffee creamers Sugar. Also found in Ice cream, puddings, Condensed milk, Chocolate , Commercial sauces, marinades and salad dressings, fruit & veg juices, cordials, syrups etc... It’s an addictionsubstitute with Stevia, Zylitol or Erythritol – NOT artificial sweeteners. All seed oils (sunflower, canola, grapeseed, cottonseed, corn)rather use coconut oil - it can help control your blood sugar, protect your heart, keep your brain healthy and prevent Alzheimer’s disease, it protects your joints from debilitating arthritis.. Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils including margarine, vegetable oils, vegetable fats All fast food & processed food, viennas, luncheon meats All unfermented soya (vegetarian “protein”) STARCHY VEGETABLES: Beetroot,

Legumes, Parsnips, Peas & potatoes Eat fruits sparingly – think of them as sweets- fresh and dried..... while natural sugar is far preferable to refined sugar, its consumption needs to be controlled 2nd step: Get some recipes buy a book, go online, share with your friends... try and test till you find the ones that work for you – there are loads of resources... make your own bread or buy banting breads & crackers

6th step: Be strong and think of your health – don’t look at it as a diet but rather a lifestyle- at least try stick to it and you will see a change..... focus on eating real food and be responsible for your own well-being. Last and most important step..... have fun with it!!! Start slowlyphase it in.... focus on the good stuff you can have instead of the things you have to avoid.... (come on who doesnt love butter in their food).... so many things we were told we cant have is now again “legal’.... in the end do it cause it makes you happy and makes you feel good!!! Written by: Roelien Parkin

3rd step: Get yourself a coffee grinder ( I got mine from Checkers at only R 200 – a great investment) now buy whole nuts and seeds and make your own flours... it costs way less this way! And its fun.... plus you can use it for actually grinding coffee beans.... and all sorts of spices so its a good investment all around.... 4th step: Remember the basics. It’s a high fat, medium protein, low carb..... Animal fat DOES NOT make you fat- small amounts at a time make you feel full and stop you from overeating. Green veggies are the best – low in carbs and full of nutrients. Don’t eat too much protein. No more than 80 to 90 g of meat or fish is what you should be eating with any meal. 5th step: Read labels before you buy- phase out your old ways. Five grams of carbs is the cutoff. Watch out for added sugar!

CHIVAS – THE VENTURE The Venture R3.6M Startup Competition opens for Entry in SA…and Trendfrenzy Magazine was at this very exclusive star studded event.

What is the venture exactly?

Well if you believe your business idea is up there with the likes of Lumkani, the township shack fire detector that recently won almost R1 million in major international start-up competition The Venture…Then excellent! The organisation is now recruiting entries for the 2016 competition, and there’s a massive R3.6 million up for grabs if you are interested and you have a great business idea that’s in line with their strategy.

What is that Strategy exactly?

Well basically The Venture was created to inspire, discover and reward those who believe that business can be a force for good. The Venture is basically an annual contest that seeks out the best startups in 16 countries through regional semi-finals who then go through to the international finals in San Francisco, US and to present short pitches for their shot at the grand prize. The South African competition opened at a high end gala on Friday the 14th August 2015. The Stars came out to be part of this superb event including Lumkani’s David Gluckman and awardwinning Hollywood Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.

“As Lumkani, we have a big global vision,” Gluckman said about Lumkani’s win,

We have to invest in the right people, resources, talent and create a broader network. Winning third prize will allow us to get our product out there and go international.

“My advice to other startups would be to know your market, understand your product and test your product to make sure people want it. Make sure it’s the right thing to sell,” Gluckman said as a word of encouragement to other social entrepreneurs who are venturing into the startup world. Entries open on 1st September and must be submitted on the Chivas Regal The Venture website. You must be 25 years or older to apply and entries close on 15th November. Local finalists will be notified in December and the winner will be announced in January 2016. https://www.theventure.com/za/en/ Dates for the finals are yet to be finalised but are expected to take place in June or July 2016. Go check out the Gallery on our website to see more of the celebs that walked this Red carpet. www.trendfrenzy.co.za

a day with datsun Besides reviewing the Datsun we wanted to share with you that absolutely amazing day that we were treated to by Datsun and their marketing team. It was, after all a very unforgettable experience for me and everyone who was fortunate enough to be invited.

My fear of heights is strong, you should know…so I was excited to be there but not looking forward to facing my fears. Hehehe Lucky for me the wind was far too rough so there was no jumping necessary. What was the alternative?

So the Activation event started with a delicious breakfast and a quick presentation of what the car was all about. We then started off on our journey with our first clue card in hand. We were each given a car to go exploring in.

Quad biking! Yes…something I had never ever

I thought this was such a great idea…

After a little bit of an adrenaline rush we moved onto lunch in Soweto. At this stage I was starving so really any food would have tasted amazing…but really the restaurant we visited served great food.

What better way to get people to fall in love with a car than have them drive one around for an entire day. Well, I’m sure you can tell it left an impression on me. Anyway, our first clue led us to Constitution hill where we were treated to a tour of the prison cells and then the court. Our history is powerful South Africa…and there is no better place to really feel and experience this by walking the prison cells of some of the people who fought against all the odds to be free. After this amazing experience we jumped back in our little Datsun Go’s and zipped off to 27 boxes in melville. Never been to 27 boxes? Well then you should be ashamed of yourself… lol…seriously though it’s worth a visit. 27 boxes consists of containers that have been brilliantly assembled to create a market of sorts if you will. We had the best coffee and carrot cake there before heading off to the orlando Towers. I must admit when I arrived at the towers I was somewhat apprehensive because I thought that maybe the organisers plan was to get us all to do a jump.

attempted but one thing I am not afraid of is 4 wheels so I was keen to give it a whirl. What a super fun experience that was, and turns out I wasn’t terrible at it. So yay me!

So at this stage we thought that was that. But no…there was more. I know, how lucky can one girl get in one day. Super super lucky it turns out because once we got back to the Hotel we were treated to an absolutely divine full body Massage at Camalot Spa. Yes…my day was complete.

We ended off with a delicious 3 course dinner. I think this brand really got it right with this kind of event. They took the time to get to know us all a little better on a personal level and gave us so much to go off and talk to everyone we know about our day and the Datsun Go. Now that’s how you really connect with your audience. Awesome marketing strategy.

I would just like to say Thank You datsun & magna-carta for spoiling us. We at Trendfrenzy love you for every moment!

Why so Popular?

Because you’re cool? No…

Because you drive the Datsun datsun is quickly reasserting its presence in South Africa after recording Datsun GO sales via dealerships of 3,225 since launch on 20th October last year, placing it first in the A segment during the period of October 2014 to March 2015. The GO was the first offering bearing the redesigned and modernised brand to take to Africa’s roads since the early 1980’s and the trend has continued in the new year, with the 1,967 sales since January also giving Datsun first position in the dealer sales in the A segment.

Go!

We are continuing to innovate, but want to ensure we do not push prices beyond the reach of consumers, says mr Fenner.

Which is just another reason it’s so well suited for driving around town. It also held its own on the highway…the Datson Go may be small but it packs a punch and won’t leave you putting along in the slow lane.

“It is not a surprise that these cars are attractive to a new generation of drivers and we want to ensure the successes we have seen in a country like India, where demand for entry-level cars is also high and rising further, are replicated in Africa,” says Mr Fenner. A brand new affordable car has the benefit of low fuel consumption, and also cuts back on maintenance costs. It is less likely to break down than old cars, and a service plan is also available as an option. Of course, these cars also come with a factory warranty, and peace of mind is assured.

I had the absolute privilege on the 14th July to drive the brand new Datsun Go. The verdict? We loved it and for the market it’s aimed at we give it a 9/10. This trendy little car is perfect for the entry market…so if you are looking for your first car, this is definitely the car for you. The basic model will cost you R95 000 and that really is super low for a really cool little car with so much spunk and bang for your buck. Designed for ‘people on the GO’ – people who are active and pursue the optimum choice for their stage of life. It’s also the perfect car for inner city driving. It’s quite surprisingly quick off the line for a 1.2L engine. I think what stood out for me the most was its great fuel consumption and its ability to turn on a penny…No more 3 point turns necessary.

The interior is reasonably spacious for the little car it is. A really cool feature is its cellphone docking station which connects to the speakers in the car. This means you can blast your own playlists straight from your phone. There is also a USB slot available…so you can upload your latest playlists to your USB device and always have your favourite music in your car.

The only thing that takes a little getting used to is the handbrake which is situated within the dashboard near the gear stick. But really that’s minor. Body Piercing Need to Knows! most of us have considered getting pierced, whether it’s a simple ear piercing or as extreme as nipple piercings. Below is a list of safety tips to follow when getting pierced, to ensure a healthy, happy you.

1

7 2 9 4

The most important safety measure is to use a professional piercer. These people go through training specifically to do this, so they know what they are doing. Do not let anyone pierce you with a “piercing gun”. Ever.

Do your homework. Ask around and look online to find the best person for the job. They might be more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

3 5

Make sure the piercing area is clean and sterile. This includes a sealed needle and sterilized tools and jewellery. The skin needs to be clean and sterile as well.

Make sure the piercer wears new gloves. If you are allergic to latex, inform them. Sit as still as possible, you do not want your piercing to be skew or torn.

Do not clean your piercing with any chemicals. This might cause infections. Use lukewarm salt water only. Do not over clean. Twice daily is sufficient.

6

Do not fiddle or touch the piercing too often. If you have to touch it, wash your hands.

8 10

Do not change the jewellery for at least 30 days. You might damage the wound and that might cause an infection.

If you are having an allergic reaction to the jewellery, remove it immediately.

Even after your piercing has healed, keep it clean. Salt water is no longer needed, soap and water is fine.

Always keep in mind that there are risks with any body piercing and you will most likely have a small scar when the jewellery is removed. If you experience any problem, please contact your nearest piercer for advice.

Exploring Jozi

t

here is nothing more uplifting than becoming a tourist in your own country. It may sound silly but don’t knock it until you have tried it. You will be so very pleasantly surprised when you begin your explorations and find that there are places you didn’t know existed and they are on a level you never expected. We live in such and amazing place and there is so much to see and do here that really…you should be doing and seeing everything here in SA before wondering off to another continent. How did I come to this realisation? Well I fell in love with photography some years back and the thing about photography is that the love affair you find there is a love affair with life. Being behind that lens and being able to capture moments of beauty frozen in time is spectacular. What’s more you will find that socialising with other photographers expands your ability to see life not just through your eyes and your perspective but theirs as well. And let me tell you that I have met some truly inspiring people though my photographic journey. One day while browsing through facebook I found a Jozi Photowalkers page and thought…”hey this could be fun”…and I was so right. I found a post by the #ExploreZa Instameet crowd run by two very talented photographers Keenan Constance & Matthew Kanniah. They were organising a photowalk for photographers and instagramers in Braamfontien, Johannesburg. Since I am a Photographer and I am obsessed with Instagram I jumped at the opportunity. That one ExploreZa Instameet led to two more and that led to me and a group of my own friends branching off now and then to do some of our own exploring of the city we live in. I love my city. So here is a little list of some of the coolest jozi places I have stumbled upon. To anyone who has explored Johannesburg these will probably not be anything new…but this list isn’t for those of us that have visited these places, this list is for those who haven’t yet experienced Jozi for all it’s awesomeness. Go Exploring Joburgers…you just don’t know what you’re missing!!!

Trend reviews THIS ONE TIME BY AlEx vAN ToNdER.

I enjoyed the book to a point but it won’t be on my list of top 100 books to read. The narrative jumps back and forth in time, which might confuse some readers. Towards the middle I was getting slightly bored as I felt that particular scene was too drawn out however at the end I was pleasantly surprised as there was an electrifying plot twist which ended the book on a high note. There are lots of pop culture and social media references which make it ideal for a 20 something to read, laugh with and identify. This is a first time book from a blogger based in Cape Town. The book is set in New York and in keeping with New York does have a few words in it. I wouldn’t recommend this book for someone much older or younger but for a young adult, older teenager or twenty something it is an entertaining light read that does not require too much brain power to grasp.

CAN’T FlEx FAT REVIEW You are what you eat».» You can›t out train a bad diet.» These things you hear every day. As a gym goes I agree. I know that I need to eat clean in order to see the changes I want. But it›s not that easy. Prepping healthy meals can be time consuming - weighing portions, shopping for sugar free, lean products, putting them into dozens of Tupperware boxes and then washing up the ones from last week. Here comes the solution..... Healthy, nutritious food delivered to your door daily. I was lucky enough to try the food from Can’t Flex Fat, a relatively new business based in Pretoria. Now there are many services out there like this but Can’t Flex Fat is different. They specialise in fitness athletes and competitors diets, although they can cater for all sorts of other diet plans. Athletes flying in from Durban, Cape Town and other parts of Johannesburg call Can’t Flex Fat and ask them to deliver food to them for the weekend of their show. That just shows the superiority of this brand. I received 2 of Can’t Flex Fats meals to taste and

judge. The broccoli, brown rice and steak (cut into strips) was perfectly cooked and just the right size. The beef, sweet potatoes and courgettes was weighed and portioned correctly and the beef was moist and tasty. 2 typical meals of an athlete. The food came in lovely resealable Tupperware containers and with your first order you get your own CFF cooler bag to carry all your food around with you. You even get your own knife, fork and spoon with your bag. And no they are not the dodgy aero plane kind they are better quality. They offer competitive pricing and have around 80 full time clients, which means that their quality is so great people keep coming back. And if you are in other city like Cape Town and Durban don’t stress, there is plans for expansion to other cities in the immediate future. I can see why this is the trusted brand for fitness athletes all over South Africa.

BUCKET lIST - August Paris is the city of love, baguettes, mimes, Cole Porter and wine. It is also the home of the Love Locks Bridge, the Louvre, the Mona Lisa with her enigmatic smile and so much more. But there is a side of Paris that not many people know about. I should rather say a level to Paris that most people wouldn’t enjoy. If your idea of fun is going below the city levels, in dark confined spaces, exploring the subterranean depths then this adventure is for you. Originally the catacombs were used as graveyards giving it the title of the “Largest Graveyard in the World” or “Frances Empire of the Dead”. Over 6 million people are buried below Paris. These days it has become a thriving underground society where “cataphiles” regularly descend into the dark depths for days on end to relax, dig new tunnels, create art by carving into the rock or

CANdY WASTEd

spray painting on the walls. Today, a little more than a mile of the catacombs is open for visitors to explore. The public entrance is located in Paris’ 14th arrodissement, at 1, avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy. The rest of the tunnels are illegal to be in so take care when you do find one of the unknown entrances hidden on the streets of Paris.Because it is so big a map is a must have. You can even swim down there. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Cupcakes are a woman’s best friend. Small, beautifully decorated and made of all things sweet people all over the world adore these little parcels of goodness. Recently cupcakes have made a big comeback and gourmet cupcakes are all the rage, especially in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Now I am not one to turn down a cupcake and when I found out that Candy Wasted does a peanut butter cupcake I was in cupcake heaven. I rushed to Market on Main ( read more about it in the September issue) looking with eagle eyes for the Candy Wasted stall. Alas that day they didn’t have the peanut butter one but they had many other flavors like the Rainbow flavor, salted caramel, nutella and others. I got to try the salted caramel and the nutella one. I expected so much and I can tell you that I was not disappointed. The cupcakes (in the jar!) were fluffly flavoured sponge with not just ONE layer of icing but two layers of delectable fluffy goodness. Don’t worry you won’t have to go all caveman and eat with your fingers, you do get a cute wooden spoon. The portion is just enough to make you feel like you are having a treat but not big enough to make you regret eating it. Of course once you taste the heaven that is contained in the jar you won’t EVER regret it. The cupcakes range from R35 - to R40 and can be ordered online from www.candywasted.co.za. They deliver and they often have stalls at Market on Main in Johannesburg and Neighbourhood Goods. For more eye candy go check out their facebook page here (www.facebook.com/CandyWasted)

Bonang Matheba Fondly known as “Queen B*”, Bonang Matheba is SA’s IT girl who has cemented herself as the entertainment lady of now – Media Maven, MC, TV & Radio Presenter, Fashionista and TV Producer. B’s electric on-screen presence is undeniable, but she is no over-night success story. Following stints in youth and educational programmes from the age of 15, her breakout performance on SABC1’s music show “LIVE”, entertaining seven million viewers weekly, is what propelled her into stardom. Known for her trademark energetic and fast-paced presenting style, Bonang is now a presenter on both South Africa’s premium Lifestyle and Magazine Show, Top Billing and Afternoon Express. Described as “the best female presenter to ever come out of SA“, Bonang also hosts Metro FM’s “The Front Row”, bringing fashion, entertainment and lifestyle news to 6,7 million of listeners across South Africa. The real reason we think Bonang is so very successful…it’s her presence firstly. You really need to just be in a room with her to really see how brightly she shines. She is confident & fearless and where does she draw her courage from you may ask? I think she said it best with this line: ‘’God has already laid out what is due to you and nobody can take that away.’’ We wish we could have her talk to you right now like she did for us at this conference but since that is not possible we have selected the 10 Most Motivating and Inspirational things she said in bite sized portions: “They call us the Next generation…the Millennial’s…the generation that is obsessed with instant gratification. Social networks specifically have created a lust for instant gratification which has completely removed the value behind hard work. So this generation has completely forgotten that an overnight success takes 4 to 5 years to happen.” “The thing about successful people is that they make it all look so easy but in reality they do not sleep. It is constant go, moving, changing, planning. Successful people work” “The world owes you absolutely nothing…

success is your own responsibility” “People have said to me…Bonang…you must give other people space to shine and I’m like no…absolutely not! Work! Why should I make space for you when I am putting in the grit day and night. Do some work!” “What you give out to the Universe the universe will give back to you” “The only Barrier you need to break is in your own mind” “What God has laid out for you no one can take from you.” And that my beautiful people is why Bonang is as fabulous and powerful as she is. Want a little more? Here are a few of the questions participants of the conference had to for Bonang. Since we are celebrating women’s month, what do you think is the one challenge we are facing as women and how do we overcome that challenge? I think the fact that women think they are facing challenges is a challenge. Honestly though I think other women are the challenge. We’ve all heard about it…”the pull me down syndrome”. So really I think as women we need to get to a point where we learn to celebrate each other successes, we support each other and cheer each other on. You were talking about planning and sometimes people are faced with challenges where plans keep failing. How do you stay motivated and on track? There is something in having a dream and really wanting to achieve it, no matter how long it takes and how much rejection you have to endure. It took me 8 years of rejection to get me to this place. The thing is that if you are willing to give up on something then it wasn’t really in your heart in the first place. If you are willing to let go…ask yourself why you held on so tight in the first place. When you wake up and you don’t feel like getting out of bed, how do you motivate and encourage yourself to get out of up and face the day? I always think of myself as a contributory, so God gives to me so He can give through me and I realised if I don’t wake up maybe

someone else won’t want to wake up. I realised that I have received a huge blessing in life and maybe there is a young girl out there who looks up to Bonang, is depending on Bonang to wake up and to work and put her heart and soul into what she is doing because if I don’t maybe she won’t. Waking up, planning, wanting to be successful…it becomes a habit. the more you taste success the harder you want to work, the more you want to do.

The Trend Frenzy guy with everything, except the girl

The offspring

t seems there’s something in the air or something in the water. Or some people REALLY need to get a LED full HDTV because my social media newsfeed lately is filled with baby announcements, scans and baby pictures. I’m quite sure I’m not alone. And it hits closer to home when one of those announcements comes from one of your bestest buddies who you simply can’t ignore or block. So what’s my take on having offspring? I can quote the Damon Wayans movie, BlankMan, which is very appropriate. “I have to find a girl first!”. So there are definitely no “Mini-Me-Not-Made-InChina’s” running about yet because I have no full time “practice buddy” at this moment (hint hint, any volunteers?). Despite that, I am told that I am quite good with children and I’m labelled as the “Don’t Tell Mom” kinda guy. And considering what everyone has said about me and my baby sitting skills… I’d say that they probably have me figured out quite well. Although, I have to confess, I’m good with kids as long as I can give them back to their rightful guardians.

changes. The negativity is always the common factor though. A work colleague with a new born complained about sleepless nights, the cost of scans and medical aid not paying for things that was pure Greek to me. A girl whom I considered dating complained about how difficult it is to get a baby sitter and how much she’d have to spend on her child’s clothes as he grew so fast. She mumbles that if she knew what she knew now, she’d rather be using that money to travel. Parents with teenagers warn me how expensive schooling is, or how the boys eat the fridge contents clean, nevermind the cost of books or university. After all those comments that have a hint of regret, it really has me a bit scared. Okay, ma-kulusize scared. I’m quite sure there are quite a few positives of parenthood. The unconditional love I believe is one of them, and kids say the darndest and entertaining things. I’ve heard such amusing stories of kids overhearing adults use “bad words” and unknowingly use those bad words in the absolute correct context. One such story was a little four year old boy who mistakenly threw his cricket ball too high and landed on the roof and said, “ooooh sheeaaat” and when the ball rolled off the angled roof muttered, “thank gaawd!”

“I really love my kids…. BUt….” And I don’t eVer want to mutter those words about my children. “

What does concern me is that I’ve heard so many of them rightful guardians say, “I really love my kids, don’t get me wrong, they are the best things that ever happened to me… BUT…” and it’s the ending of that sentence that comes with negative scariness. It’s definitely not something I expect from loving parents. Depending on how old their offspring is, the level of negative severity

Another such story is a two year old girl that dropped her strawberry spread toast, jam side down on the floor. She immediately gazed at her fallen treat and uttered under her breath an

audible, “faaaak!” That had me chuckling for days! So indeed, I’m pretty sure there are some amazing Kodak and priceless MasterCard moments. If you asked me a few years ago if I wanted kids, the answer was a definite yes. Then I started to become undecided with all those negative vibes from responsible parents. The clincher for me on weather I am ready for fatherhood, was from one of my Italian friends. He’s always been a man about family and thought every other couple that told him that they didn’t want kids, was insane and mad. Being Italian, fatherhood for him was like a right of passage. A means to honour “the familia”, carry on the family name and leave a living legacy. It just made a whole lot of sense to him. And it did to me too. We were all ecstatic for him when we heard that he and his wife were expecting. A year after the birth of his daughter, he said, “Oh my word, now I understand why some couples don’t want children. My whole life changed. Don’t get me wrong, I love my daughter… but the sleepless nights, the amount of time sacrificed, the stress of the potential medical problems for both mother and child…. it all happened all at once! Parenthood is absolutely not for everybody.” Despite that, a year later after those words left his mouth, they were expecting their second child. I’ve visited their home, I know they definitely have a TV, I can’t explain why they chose to double the self-infliction! Nevertheless, if a devoted, fairly well off family man can say that about parenthood, and constantly reminds me that I’m better off with two premium superbikes than having two unconditionally loving children. It strikes the fear in me. Not because being single has the stereotypical label of being irresponsible or selfish but because most of these responsible parents say “I really love my kids…. BUT….” And I don’t EVER want to mutter those words about my children. Until I am absolutely sure I will NEVER say those words, the only “Offspring” I’d like to know, is a rock band.

JoININg THE RANKS

“A

re you lookin’ at me, Maggot?! Are you lookin’ at me?! Why is your sorry ass of a recruit lookin’ at me?! Drop and gimmie twennie!” Okay so I don’t work in the military. I do however always have that Drill Sergeant movie scene go through my head when people say that they’d like to be recruited to the automotive industry Head Office. My full time job is an Automotive Engineering Senior Executive from Head Office. Very recently I have had a few people ask me how does one get recruited into the Automotive Industry. I’m hoping this article will offer some guidance. My first response is what do you want to do in the Automotive industry? It may look glamorous with gleaming new fancy cars, however somebody still has to crunch numbers, answer phones and handle client concerns. Everybody wants to be the boss of something, right? And it’s that “something” that first determines what you need and where to go. That would be the first step, figure out where do you want to be in the industry. And what I specifically mean is, at what level in the industry do you want to be in. There’s Retail (Dealership Level) and Head Office (Corporate Level). The main difference between the two is that at Retail Level, you deal directly with the public. Head Office level, you deal with factory personnel and international representatives. Both levels require a specific level of professionalism and both have different advantages. At Dealer level you meet many more different people in comparison to Head Office. Also at Dealer level there is a possibility to earn much more than Head Office staff (due to Dealership bonus incentive schemes). Head Office staff responsibilities and hours are generally more structured and company perks may include possibilities of an overseas assignment. You’ve decided which side of the Automotive Fence you want to be on. What’s next? You have to be sure you meet the minimum educational requirements. In both cases you need “real” maths. Math Literacy isn’t going to help you here. Everything about a car is maths and science orientated, from fuel capacity, wheel sizes, fuel consumption, power output and maximum torque. If you didn’t understand any of the terms I’ve just mentioned, best you learn what they

are, because that’s the basics. You’ve Googled, YouTubed and you now got your smarty pants swag on. Now what? Here we go, Maggot! It’s time to see if you REALLY have what it takes! Drop and gimmie twennie! You call that a push up! Get up Maggot and have a lookie here! <Oops…. Getting carried away in the moment again. *clears throat and turns off Drill Sergeant voice*> A good source is LinkedIn.com. Get on it and create a profile if you aren’t already on there. The easiest part is looking up and networking with recruitment agents. Many of the agents are linked with retail Dealerships. There’s a lot of staff turnover there because as people prove themselves, their reputation precedes them and they get poached by other Dealerships or other manufacturers in the retail industry. A word of caution, recruitment agents can take long in getting back to you as they have many clients on the go. An alternative is directly to the Dealership themselves. The trick here is to make a professional appointment with the correct Department Manager that you’d like to be in. If you want to be in Sales, get the Sales Manager. Aftersales, the Service Manager. Accounting and Finance, the F&I Manager. You’re getting the idea. Your nearest Dealerships contact number and contact person is easily obtainable from their website. If you want to play at Head Office, The Head Office animal is a full of red tape. Be prepared for multiple interviews and very very high expectations. There are Employment Equity clauses and stringent Qualification requirements. The latter is mainly to justify your pay grade. There will be background checks. Working for Head Office you may be recruited there either as a Contractor or Permanent Staff. Being a contractor means the company has head count restrictions, and you’re working there as an expense item rather than as an actual employee. You’re basically a “Ghost Operative” with no pension, no medical aid, no lease car, sometimes no thirteenth cheque. If you want to be on the CEO’s radar you need to be Permanent Staff. That’s the one where you know you’re eligible for all the company perks and bonuses.

My biggest tip if you want to play at Head Office is that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES, post your CV (resumé, for those of you that choose to speak “American”) to the head office address. The reason being that the company is HUGE and your little CV document may land on the wrong person’s desk with the same name and get binned, or get lost in the internal post between invoices and expense claims. (Trust me…. It happens….) If it does land at HR. It sits on that person’s desk and chills…. And chills with the other 400 CV’s that arrived that month. Here’s what you do. We’re in the modern online era. Go digital and register your stuff online with who you want to work for. And when you do that, activate your “patience” app. Every company worth their salt that seeks quality candidates are going to test your patience by making you painfully and accurately enter all your details, so hang in there, young Jedi. This method is more effective because Head Office HR has their own little version of “Recruitment Google” and when they search the database of submitted CV’s with their required keywords, your name has a better chance of jumping out with a “Pick ME!” sign than the 400 CV’s chilling on the desk. You still lookin’ at me for further orders? You’re still with me?! Alrighty Soldier… here are a selection of places you can go and do some recon. From here on in, you’re on your own. Good luck and maybe I’ll see you in my squad.

Waist training for fitness?

o

MG the hype surrounding waisttrainers or waist-clinchers has completely taken over Hollywood! The massive popularity of this latest trend can be credited largely to the Kardashians, whose huge following has amassed record level sales of the garment. Waist training has only very recently hit our shores and is on every trend-follower’s lips... But what exactly is a “Waist-trainer” and how does it work? Essentially, a waist-trainer is a modern day corset; inspired by the Victorian time period (1837-1901.) Corsets were an integral part of women’s lives and were primarily used for shaping and moulding women’s bodies into the much desired hourglass shape. These days, the likes of Kim and Kourtney Kardashian incorporate and use the garment as part of their fitness regime, claiming that this burns calories like crazy. The most popular and preferred type of trainer is the Latex Waist-trainer, whose consumers believe it to sweat away the fat from the abdomen and waist. Manufacturers

and vendors of these waist-trainers aid this popular belief by claiming that the unique latex material does everything from attacking unwanted fat and impurities to strengthening your core and improving your posture. A popular website, www.waist-no-time. com claims that the “thermogenesis created within your body [from latex waist-training] will allow your body to rid itself of harsh toxins and impurities through perspiration.” This is all very well and good but it’s important to understand all the possible effects waist-training may have on your body, before embarking on creating a “tiny waist.” Some in the medical community refute the belief that waist-trainers simply sweat off the inches on your waist; but rather that they simply encourage the redistribution of fat from your waist to lower parts of your body like your hips, thighs and butt. Other Medical professionals add that waist-training does not have any permanent effects and that the body will take to its natural shape soon after the trainer is removed. This opinion however varies.

A further blow to supporters of waisttrainers is the published opinion of Dr Galyna of the Irish Examiner. Dr Galyna states that waist-clinching “..can cause your organs to shift with potentially dangerous consequences...” Further stating that this can cause “The upper body organs to move upwards and the lower organs to move downwards.” The Doctor says this increase the chance of heartburn as your stomach shifts up beyond your diaphragm, causing acid reflux. But with celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba and Blac Chyna advocating and crediting waist-training for their hourglass figures, its little wonder why young women are fast becoming hooked onto this trend, negative possible effects and all. Hopefully having now a better understanding of the benefits as well as the cautionary warnings associated with waist training, you’ll be able to make a more informed opinion of whether it is a trend to follow or not. We’d love to hear your opinions, are you #Teamwaisttrain or #Teamnatural?

Let the force be with you

i

want to introduce my spiritual side to you...I believe each person must find their own spiritual path to enlightenment, it’s a wonderful journey of self-discovery, an open mind is key and knowledge is power.

I am spiritual but not religious.... I believe in a higher power or the Source, the Universal life force... the God of everything. I grew up as a Christian and still hold most of the values dear. Being spiritual lets me experience and find my own path to God, whereas I find religion to be connected with public membership of churches with all their own different beliefs – this limits my own experience as I am told what to believe. I believe most religions believe in the same God and just follow different paths to worship Him. Spirituality is something that is found within oneself. It is your way of loving, accepting and relating to the world around you. It cannot be found in a church or by believing in a certain way.... these are my feelings & thoughts, you might disagree with my way of thinking but that is again based on your perceived thoughts and feelings... In the end I just want to better myself and love my fellow beings unconditionally... how can that be a bad thing? My path might be different than yours but I should not be judged for that.... acceptance, peace, love and happiness is all I really strive for. I meditate as it makes me feel closer to the Source and the answers to my spiritual questions. It also relaxes me and calms my emotions. I feel that mind, body and spirit all need to be in tune and healthy to create a happy life of existence on mother Gaia (our wonderful planet Earth).

I am also very interested in crystal healing and

alternative therapies, healthy & natural food & healing techniques. I love aromatherapy, yoga, pilates, feng shui, the power of the mind and many other subjects of interest to my free spirit.

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO CANCELLING WITHOUT LOSING ALL YOUR FRIENDS

i

t’s a fact that we are fast becoming a flaky generation. Bailing on plans with friends is as big a part of modern life as Instagram, twitter ad grocery shopping online. Last minute cancellations would never have crossed the minds of those from previous generations. In the past cancelling plans was a Big Deal, only executed in extreme circumstances. It required an urgent phone call, probably by at least the day before. Not a quick thumb-swivel 50 minutes before you were due to meet. Today, cancelling is easy. And we make plans accordingly: we say “yes” to far too many things. Sometimes it’s just a case of optimism: we genuinely want to make it to three separate parties on Saturday night, and nothing – not even the space-time continuum – is going to stop us. Sometimes the day comes and we’re so hungover or wrung-out from work that a coffee and cake date with a friend feels less like a treat and more like yet another chore on an endless to-do list. And sometimes we make a plan knowing full well we’re going to cancel at a later date. We do this because we are caught off-guard and don’t want to offend, or we want the person to know we do want to meet up just not enough to go to that stupid thing at stupid o’clock in the morning. So, Given that modern life is flaky, here’s the definitive guide to cancelling without losing all your friends in the process.

CANCEllINg SHoUld BE A TWo-WAY STREET If you’re about to bail on coffee with a friend who has cancelled on you in the past, you are golden. She owes you one and cannot get even the teeniest tiniest bit sulky. But never forget that cancellation is one of those issues – like recreational drug use and the Twilight franchise – Which splits otherwise like-minded people down the middle. We all have one friend who is completely breezy about cancellation. She does it to you, you do it to her, everyone is happy. Even though the two of you haven’t seen each other in over a year. There are other people, however who wouldn’t dream of cancelling that casual coffee at 11am on Saturday. Even if they are offered free Golden circle tickets to go watch Riana live…they would turn it down to keep an appointment with you. NEVER Cancel on a non cancelly person… or do…but do so at your own peril.

START oUT UTTERlY SoRRY Even if the date you are cancelling is a casual coffee meet around the corner with your friend, start with the assumption that your cancellation is a HUGE inconvenience, for which you are deathly sorry about. If she messages you back saying ‘No problem, I wasn’t all that keen to venture out this morning anyway’, then you can go back to being your normal happy self. But until you know she’s ok with it, act like you just ran over her cat. Because she may have chosen to skip her weekly yoga class, or ditched a promising internet date with a non-wierdo in order to meet with you for that silly coffee around the corner. CHooSE YoUR mEdIUm Whatsapp is fine as long as you are dealing with another casual canceller. If however you are ditching one of those ‘non-cancelly’ type of human…then you may want to opt for the traditional phone call. It’s far easier to gauge the reaction and back track if you need to this way. It also shows that you feel so bad that you have taken the time and chosen to go as far as wasting airtime to personally apologise for cancelling on them. do KEEP TRACK Like everything, cancelling on people is also a numbers game…so keep track of who cancelled last time, how many times you have cancelled and the reasons you cancelled. May sound unnecessary but if Angela cancels on Bianca, then cancels on Bianca two weeks down the line and then cancels on Bianca once again… chances are Bianca will understand this as the international sign for ‘’F off, I hate you’’. This is a sure fire way to lose a friend. If however Angela cancels on Bianca and then a couple weeks later Bianca cancels on Angela… the two events cancel each other out and neither can be too hurt by it. Friendship safe. Disrespect is directly in proportion to inconvenience Here’s something to think about…how rude you are being is in direct proportion to how screwed your friend is by your cancellation. There’s obviously a massive difference between bailing on coffee with a friend, and telling your friend that you simply can’t make it as her plus-one to her ex’s wedding or letting her know on the day

that you are not going to make it to that concert she already bought tickets to…tickets that you still haven’t paid her for. So a general rule to follow here…if there is a dress code don’t you dare cancel and if tickets have been paid for its only common curtesy to attend; if you absolutely can’t…then pay for your ticket anyway. That said…don’t make the assumption that because there is a group of you going together to the same event that it’s ok to opt out. We have all endured that special birthday treat of waiting alone at a massive table in the pub, telling others NO…they can’t have that chair, because every single one of your friends thought it didn’t matter if they were an hour late or didn’t believe showing up was that important. Sometimes…just sometimes…Honesty is not the best Policy It’s super tempting to think that since we’re all so comfortable with cancellations these days, it’s not necessary to find an excuse; ‘Can we do it another time?’ will suffice. WRONG! Rule one applies here…ask yourself…are they a breezy canceller or are they a non cancelly person. If they are breezy then they might appreciate honest…and subtle adulation. ‘Was super excited to see you, but I just have so much work to catch up on and I need to get a head start on my presentation – Could we do it another time’. If it’s a non-canceller then best you lay the excuse on thick. ‘I so badly wanted to meet up today but something I ate last night has me so violently ill that my mom had to come and fetch me and take me to the hospital for observation.’ That kind of serious excuse. lET’S JUST AgREE To CANCEl A BIT lESS With all this said and done, we all need to get less cosy with cancellation. Do it for selfish reasons if you like; even a textual cancellation brings some unnecessary stress into your life. The only sure fire way to cancel on things less often is to say ‘no’ to more things in the first place. So rediscover a little phrase that goes something like…’Oh what a pitty, I’ve already got something on that day.’ It’s also way better to be the ‘Probably not gonna make it’ who manages to swing by, than the ‘Yes, defo!’ who bails at the last minute.

Don’t Give Fat the Bat

The Low-Carb-Frenzy

Challenge

o

ver the years, we have all been lead to believe those nasty rumours about “fat” being the enemy when it comes to weight-loss. Luckily, new studies have come to light to show that the information about “fat” being the diet disaster has been nothing but a “Big-Fat-Lie”. The bittersweet truth regarding weight-loss is that sugar is in fact the culprit. There’s no sugar-coating it: fat won’t make you fat - sugar will! When speaking of fat however, we are obviously speaking about the “good” stuff - the fats that are easy to digest and are bundled with vitamins and minerals (i.e. avo, coconut oil, flaxseed, raw nuts, fatty fish, zero-sugar peanut butter, olives etc.). You’re probably rolling your eyes thinking that the industry of nutrition is fickle and you’re not alone (nor do we blame you). Our eating habits mimic that of fashion trends going inand-out of fashion. Further to this, the authorities on health and food change their minds more than the weather in Cape Town. However, the low-carb/ low-sugar philosophy that we used to dub “Atkins” has been tried and tested. Atkins has 40 years of experience within the scope of what we are now calling “Banting” *cue to stop rolling your eyes* Before you start panicking at the words “Low-Carb” and “Low-Sugar” and start thinking, “Wow, this is going to be difficult!” you need to

understand that the Atkins approach is all about truly satisfying weight-loss. We’re telling you that you can lose weight without compromising on taste and you don’t have to substantially reduce your food portions to the size of Kate Moss. We believe that you need to enjoy your journey to fitting into those skinny jeans, or you’ll hate the route on this journey and will detour by slowly slipping back into your Fat Pants. We are telling you that you can enjoy a delicious Atkins chocolate bar every day and still manage to shed the extra weight. This will be the The Low-Down on The LowCarb-Frenzy Challenge Trend Frenzy in partnership with Atkins, are going to be running a Low-Carb-Frenzy Challenge where you can put the low-carb lifestyle to the test. most satisfying dietary challenge you’ve ever been on. Atkins will help take the word “die” out of “dieting” and instead, will make your diet deliciously-to-die-for! Diets which involve cutting calories lead to a sense of emptiness. However, by interrupting the sugar cycle – by reducing the amount of carbs we eat – we can turn the body into a very different kind of machine. Now it becomes a fatburning machine by a process known as “ketosis”. When we cut our carb intake, the body burns fat for fuel instead. This includes stored body fat. And so, day by day, the weight falls off in a truly satisfying manner. The Atkins approach will make you feel like you’re cheating the system because the approach is the most natural, easiest, tastiest and most long-term way of getting rid of that wobble syndrome. Atkins manufacture and sell a variety of nutrition solutions that are truly delicious (and satisfying). Products ranging from bars, pastas, muesli/ cereals, shakes etc. designed around the nutrition principles of the Atkins Diet. The Atkins line of products appeals to a broad audience of men and women who want to achieve their weight management goals and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. And the best part - it tastes just as good as skinny feels! he words “Low-Sugar”, “Low-Carb”, and “High-Protein” are dripping off most people’s lips these days.
