Trent University
Report on Philanthropy 2007/2008
TRANSFORMATIONAL GIVING MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE AT TRENT university Philanthropy can transform a community -- in the last ten years, Canadians have demonstrated incredible generosity which has allowed the arts to flourish, funded innovative social service projects, fostered Dr. David Schindler international research and built worldclass cancer centres. Often coupled with government funds, these gifts allow personal philanthropy to augment, and in some cases, accelerate public policy. Many times these gifts are gifts of stock which allow the donor to save capital gains tax. These gifts are called transformational because the timing, purpose and size of the gift can transform an institution. These “gifts of a lifetime” reflect a passionate expression of a donor’s values. Such giving is often considered active engagement and demonstrates the donor’s deep interest in an organization.
“This type of pace-setting philanthropy signifies the launch of a new era for our University.” President Bonnie Patterson
Since 2005, Trent has received five transformational gifts from living donors in excess of $1 million, totaling $6.5 million. In each instance, the donor carefully considers how the special “Trent experience” could be enhanced by a significant investment while the family’s personal philanthropic plan was furthered. “This type of pace-setting philanthropy signifies the launch of a new era for our University,” Trent President Bonnie
Patterson explains. “It enables Trent to build upon our national and international reputation as a leader in liberal arts and sciences education. It also makes it possible for the University to realize our renewed Vision leading up to our 50th anniversary in 2014.” Trent’s first transformational gift from a living donor was received in 2005 when Graham and Lyn Worsfold pledged $1 million to the University’s Water Quality Centre. The existing research centre was renamed the Worsfold Water Quality Centre to honour the generous donors. The second transformational gift was received in 2007 when more than 20 members of the Patterson and Drain families, including many Trent alumni, donated $2 million to establish the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics in honour of a beloved family member. “Thirteen members of our extended family have either graduated from Trent University or have taken courses at Trent and completed their degree elsewhere,” says David Patterson ‘66. “We are impressed with Trent’s leadership and its bold plans leading up to its 50th anniversary, and hope our gift will inspire other alumni and community leaders to step up to the plate.” [continued on page 4]

Dear Friends Evidence of a new era in philanthropy is everywhere at Trent. Book-ending the academic year have been historic firsts, starting with the announcement of the University’s first endowed chair, the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics, in September 2007, and culminating with the announcement of Trent’s first endowed professorship, the David Schindler Professorship in Aquatic Science, in May 2008. The latter event quietly launched the University’s Centre of Knowledge in the Environment, the first in a series of virtual philanthropic Centres to be announced as we frame Trent’s expertise around our key research and teaching strengths. The twin themes of growth and campus renewal have been the watch words as we have seen Trent grow to 8,000 students in 2007-08 while exciting and awardwinning new buildings have expanded our capacity
for teaching and research. This capacity has been strengthened by the repurposing of Catharine Parr Traill College to serve the University’s growing graduate student population. Trent has also launched a new campaign to expand our Athletics and Recreation programs. A $42 million Facilities Development Plan will work in tandem with Trent’s Research and Philanthropic Plans to invest in the intellectual capital at the heart of its mission and its future. As key leadership is renewed, change and continued revitalization will be recurring themes at Trent in the coming year. It is clear that the friends of Trent University will play an integral role, as always, as the University takes deliberate steps toward realizing its vision in 2014, our 50th anniversary year.

Since the University’s inception 44 years ago, the number of Trent alumni has grown to over 30,000 members, all of whom have taken the skills they learned at this University and applied them to make a difference in our world. I am proud to count myself among this group of thinkers and doers. As an alumna from the first decade, I have witnessed Trent’s evolution from its distinctive experimental beginnings to its current position as one of Canada’s leading universities, recognized for its excellence in teaching and research, while remaining true to its founding traditions.
Dianne Lister ‘71 LL.B., CFRE Vice-President, External Relations and Advancement
When I returned to Trent in 2006 as the vice-president of External Relations and Advancement, I began to reconnect with alumni as part of my job. I have had the privilege of learning of the impact of fellow Trent graduates who are “connected to things that matter.” Our alumni’s satisfaction with their Trent experience was recently reinforced though a rigorous survey, which showed that the level of alumni satisfaction with Trent is sky high. Overwhelmingly, 98 per cent of Trent alumni surveyed stated that their undergraduate experience was satisfactory; 80 per cent stated they were very satisfied. Significantly, 93 per cent reported still having positive overall feelings about Trent today. This high level of satisfaction positions Trent above other Canadian universities and at par with the top ranked U.S. universities tested in the same category. The results from this recent survey confirm what we have known for years – Trent alumni really do feel that this University has made a world of difference in their lives. Now, our alumni are taking their skills and using their Trent experience as a springboard to exciting adventures, careers and distinguished accomplishments. And the Trent alumni family is indeed an accomplished group, boasting such members as Dr. James Orbinski, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning past-president of Doctors Without Borders, renowned writer, poet and humanitarian Maggie Helwig, and award-winning novelists Yann Martel and Richard Wright, just to name a few. Trent works to recognize the accomplishments of our alumni. Our alumni and their family members also honour the important role Trent University has played in their lives. Last year alone, alumni were more generous than ever and contributed a staggering $3.9 million to Trent, including the first multi-million dollar gift from an alumnus family to establish the University’s inaugural endowed chair – the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics. Since 2000, alumni have donated over $7 million to their alma mater.
initiative, and then we solicited volunteers from the community, faculty and administration. The categories were defined and after a rigorous selection process the winners were selected.
In his own words: Peterborough Examiner Publisher Darren Murphy Describes his Experience as Volunteer Chair of Trent’s Community Leaders Awards Program
THE HEART OF Trent University At the heart of every university are its alumni. Nowhere is this more true than here at Trent. As a young university, Trent maintains close ties to all of our alumni – from the first graduating class in 1967 to the most recent graduates of 2008. We recognize that alumni represent this University’s past, present and future and that each member of the Trent alumni family contributes greatly to the life of our University.
Strengthening Trent’s Connection to Community
In June 2008, Trent honoured eight distinguished alumni at the Annual Alumni Awards. The winners were:
Su Ditta ’73 Distinguished Alumni Award
Victor Arnold Dyck (M.Sc. ‘67) Distinguished Alumni Award
Richard Fleming ‘68 Distinguished Alumni Award
Christine Harmston ‘91 Distinguished Alumni Award
Christine White ’77 Distinguished Alumni Award
Karin Galldin ’96 Young Leader Award
Paul Davidson ‘83
When I was approached in the spring of 2007 to work on an exciting new Trent University initiative that would recognize the contributions of leaders in the Peterborough area, I immediately agreed to get involved. The new Trent University Community Leaders Awards Program was created to honour the contributions of local leaders during their lifetimes. It is an excellent idea. Combine that recognition with the opportunity to create endowed bursaries for Trent students of the future and you have a program that is truly unique and full of impact. But the aspect of this program that really resonated with me was the opportunity for the University to build upon and strengthen its connection with the Peterborough community. I grew up in Peterborough and graduated from Trent University. Now I am fortunate to be able to work and volunteer in a community that I love. Trent University is an incredible asset to the Peterborough community and the community is likewise an asset to the University. In its inaugural year, the Community Leaders Awards Program has already helped to strengthen the relationship between the school and the community and has raised the awareness of Trent in the Peterborough community. To get this inspirational program underway, we first set out to form a committee to spearhead the
On a beautiful late September afternoon at the President’s River Reception during the Head of the Trent homecoming weekend the inaugural Community Leaders Award winners were revealed to the public. The intimate setting erupted with applause as the winners were announced and rowers sped by in the background along the Otonabee River. Plans of the committee then shifted to preparing for a gala to honour the recipients, and the process of establishing bursaries in the winners’ names began. The timing was perfect and we were able to access matching funds through a provincial program as funds were raised to create these lasting legacies. To date this program has generated more than $125,000, including matching funds. The funds will be used to provide bursaries in perpetuity for students. These leaders have also agreed to participate in a panel discussion this fall for high school students on leadership qualities. It is people like this that make Peterborough the amazing community it is and it is leading organizations like Trent University that help to make our community stronger.

Looking to the future, and towards Trent’s milestone 50th anniversary in 2014, the support of the alumni community will be vital to the University’s success. We are committed to demonstrating the impact of philanthropy by showcasing Trent’s graduates and shining a bright light on how they are making a difference in the world.
Reid Morden Chair of Trent University’s Board of Governors Joined Board of Governors in 1999 Appointed Chair in 2002 Retired as Chair in 2008
As the University’s eleventh Board chair, Reid Morden has worked tirelessly on behalf of the University on committee work, fundraising and governance issues. Reid officially retired from the Board on June 30, 2008. To recognize his outstanding leadership, Trent has dedicated a new group study room in the University’s Bata Library in his honour. “As retiring Chair, I could not have been more pleased at the establishment of the Morden Study Room as the University’s
farewell gesture,” Reid said. “To my mind, this new space puts the emphasis in exactly the right place – the student and his/her intellectual requirements.” Reid is also leaving his legacy at Trent through a student award he established with his wife in 2005. The Reid & Margaret Morden Award in the Humanities supports an undergraduate student demonstrating financial need as well as high academic achievement in the areas of history, political science or sociology.

Trent by Numbers
Transformational Giving (continued from cover)
In 2008 Trent received three transformational committments from anonymous donors. One such gift of $1 million established the David Schindler Professorship in Aquatic Science. This endowment honours a former Trent professor who is one of the world’s leading limnologists (a specialist in the study of freshwater lakes and rivers). The professorship will establish a position at the University for a leading academic in the increasingly important field of aquatic science, a multidisciplinary study of aquatic systems, encompassing both freshwater and marine systems. “I am delighted to have a professorship in my name at Trent University,” says Dr. Schindler, adding, “Freshwater will be the foremost environmental problem in the century ahead, and probably well beyond. Decisions about how we manage our water must be based on sound science. The anonymous donor who is endowing this position is extraordinarily generous, kind, and very far-sighted.”
President Bonnie Patterson and Trent alumnus David Patterson with Patterson-Drain families at the announcement of the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics
As the University’s first Endowed Chair, the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics marked a significant investment in the intellectual capital of Trent. The fund will be used to create a prestigious faculty position within Trent’s Department of Philosophy for a national or international leader in the ever-growing field of ethics. As an endowed fund, the Chair in Ethics will exist at Trent in perpetuity, ensuring that the University is able to attract and retain the finest faculty for years to come.
The establishment of the $1 million David Schindler Professorship in Aquatic Science not only marks the creation of the first endowed professorship at Trent, the gift also signifies the first transformational gift to Trent University’s Centre of Knowledge in the Environment, a virtual centre designed to showcase Trent’s international reputation as a leader in environmental research and scholarship. The Centre of Knowledge in the Environment will be one of four or five Centres launched as part of a philanthropic initiative leading up to Trent’s 50th anniversary in 2014.
For more information about these important gifts, please contact Dianne Lister, vicepresident of External Relations and Advancement at Trent, at (705) 748-1011 x7207 or diannelister@trentu.ca
“Within the Centre of Knowledge in the Environment, the new David Schindler Professorship in Aquatic Science holds a special place of significance,” says Dianne Lister, vice-president of External Relations and Advancement at Trent. “The generosity of this donor, as with our other transformational donors, will help put Trent University on the international map.”
Asking Questions, Pursuing Knowledge Scholarship Supports Innovative Grad Student
Stephen Petersen is just one of approximately 350 students currently pursuing graduate studies at Trent who are working on important research projects and answering critical questions that will inform the future development of many fields of study. Across the University’s 11 innovative graduate programs, our students are developing the skills they need to truly become our leaders of tomorrow and to make a difference in our world.
When Stephen Petersen started his Ph.D. in Environmental and Life Sciences at Trent, he received a prestigious Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Scholarship. In his third year of the program, he also became one of three inaugural recipients of the Edwin William Curtin and Irene Curtin Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship was created through a bequest in the Will of Irene Elizabeth Curtin, who was a long-time Peterborough resident and former nursing teacher with a strong belief in the importance of education. For Stephen, the $3,000 scholarship is an important top-up that makes it possible for him to spend more time on his research and writing without having to rely on extra teaching assistant positions or other employment for financial support. It is a freedom Stephen describes as “priceless,” especially considering that it is unique for such a scholarship to be available to students already receiving additional support. In the case of the Edwin William Curtin and Irene Curtin Graduate Scholarship, it is actually a prerequisite that the recipient must also have been awarded an external scholarship, like an NSERC award. Another prerequisite of the new scholarship is that the research being
undertaken by student recipients must be focused on environmental science. With a research project that studies the conservation of three Arctic mammals, Stephen was an ideal candidate for the Curtin Scholarship. “If there weren’t these structures in place to support study at the graduate level, I probably wouldn’t be here,” says Stephen, who came to Trent in 2004 to pursue his Ph.D. in Environmental and Life Sciences (formerly known as the Watershed Ecosystems Graduate Program). “The impact these scholarships have on making the pursuit of grad studies possible, and for individuals to be successful, cannot be understated – it is critical.”
Equipped with the Tools to Make a Difference In his research, Stephen uses molecular genetics to answer questions about the evolution and behaviour of Arctic mammals, particularly polar bear, ringed seals and Peary caribou. “Most of my work has implications for the management and conservation of various species,” Stephen explains. “It also helps to answers questions about how the natural world is functioning around us.”

At Trent, Stephen has found all of the tools required to answer his many questions within the new DNA Building. Using the state-of-the-art Automation Lab, he is able to process genetic material faster than most other facilities, making it possible for him to spend more time analyzing the data. A unique partnership between the University and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, who also have labs within the DNA Building, provides Stephen with even more opportunity to apply his research to the real world and make his mark in this important field.

• Board of Governors’ Leadership Award, established by members of Trent University’s Board of Governors to recognize academic excellence and provide additional assistance to students in financial need
While spring quietly nudged its way forward across campus and students feverishly wrote their final essays in March, a significant achievement came to fruition at Trent University. It was the moment when Trent’s Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) campaign topped $800,000, surpassing its goal by nearly $20,000.
• Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament Athletic Bursary, established in the tournament’s 50th anniversary year to assist local students entering their first year at Trent who have also shown a commitment to athletics
Established by the Government of Ontario in 2005, the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) matches endowed donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis to provide bursaries and awards to Ontario students. Each year, the University is provided with the opportunity to raise matched-gift funding through the OTSS program. For the 2007/2008 year, Trent was given a ceiling of $781,420 to raise under the OTSS program. From April 1, 2007 to March 30, 2008 the University recorded donations equalling $801,182, exceeding the target by $19,762 and representing a 36 per cent increase in funds raised over the previous year.
• Geography and Watershed Ecosystems North Bursary, established through the proceeds of Professor Emeritus Peter Adams’ new book, Trent,
With the matched funds, Trent University raised more than $1.5 million for student bursaries and awards through the OTSS campaign. Faculty and staff contributed over $81,000 to the OTSS campaign, and members of Trent’s Board of Governors also played a leadership role in contributing to the campaign. Generous donors from outside the University brought Trent’s fundraising target over the top.

Inside Trent Series Expands
Established in 1995, the Trent University Legacy Society represents nearly $13 million in future legacy gifts to the University. In 2007/08, fourteen new members were welcomed to the Legacy Society, which recognizes and thanks donors who have made provisions in their Will, through Life Insurance or some other means to make a future gift that will support education and research at Trent.
Estate Gifts in 2007/08 Estate of Audrey Hanbidge Estate of Phyllis & Gareth Maybee Estate of Gordon D. Watson
Legacy Donor Profile: Errol and Audrey Hanbidge Errol and Audrey Hanbidge were long-time residents of Peterborough who cared deeply for their community. It was important to them to give back to the place that gave them so much throughout their lives. Trent University is just one local institution to have benefitted from the Hanbidges’ generosity. The late Audrey and Errol Hanbidge (right) with long-time friends Isabel and Duncan Bath on their 25th wedding anniversary.
After Errol died, his wife Audrey paid him a special tribute by setting up a student bursary at Trent University in his name. Up until her own death in January 2007, Audrey made regular contributions to the Errol Hanbidge Memorial Bursary and took advantage of provincial government matching programs. Today, the bursary fund totals $285,000. In addition to the bursary, Audrey also made several other donations to Trent, including significant gifts to the James McLean Oliver Ecological Research Centre. Audrey’s generosity allowed for the construction of two cabins at the unique research centre, which is located on Pigeon Lake and is designed to be a residential field station for teaching, and for long-term ecological research. Over the years, the Hanbidges donated close to $200,000 to Trent, including Audrey’s $70,000 estate gift. When asked why he thought his long-time friends and neighbours were so interested in donating to Trent, Duncan Bath pauses before replying, “They didn’t have a formal education themselves, but they definitely knew the value of it.” Now, thanks to the Hanbidge’s legacy gifts, many Trent students for years to come will be able to experience the value of a university education first-hand.

Thanks to our Legacy Society, which now consists of 96 members, we can thank and recognize these forward-thinking donors today for their ultimate generosity. To help highlight the important commitment made by these individuals, Trent launched the Inside Trent speaker series in May 2007. Inside Trent is generously sponsored by Trent’s Legacy Society and is designed to bring Trent’s experts to the community to facilitate a sharing of knowledge on topical subjects.
In November 2007, the successful Inside Trent series took to the road. Over 100 members of the Oshawa community attended Inside Trent: An Evening with the Experts on November 21 and heard two Trent professors and one undergraduate student talk about “Climate Change: A New Reality.” The forum was further expanded in April 2008 with two Inside Trent talks held in partnership with the Sisters of St. Joseph. Trent experts spoke on two topics: “Life’s Transitions: Our Aging Population;” and “Understanding the Challenges of Aging.” The next Inside Trent: Lunch with the Experts event will be held in fall 2008.

Every Gift Counts in Annual Giving “One generous donor can make a real difference for students,” says Eunice Lund-Lucas, director of Trent’s Disability Services Office (DSO). Derek NewmanStille is one graduate who knows first-hand the direct benefit donations can have. Thanks to donor support, the DSO was able to hire Derek, a Trent graduate, on a part-time basis to serve as a mentor for students with disabilities.
What does Annual Giving Support at Trent? Money raised through Trent’s annual giving campaign works to support a number of key initiatives and investments, including:
• Bursaries, Scholarships, Awards & Prizes • Library Resources
Through the Enhanced Mentoring Program, which is supported by donations to Trent’s Annual Fund, Derek helps students discover their academic strengths and advises them on how to enhance their academic success. It is a job Derek feels passionately about. “The Disability Services Office was helpful in ensuring my academic success and therefore it was important to me to be part of something that I greatly valued,” he says.
donors help support many other important University initiatives and priorities. In 2007/08, more than $592,000 was raised in annual gifts.
In addition to sustaining essential student services such as Disability Services, over 2,000 Annual Fund

“I chose Trent because of its reputation of educational excellence as well as the cultural diversity of its student population. The reputation of the International Development Studies program was a strong pull I could not resist. I was also fortunate to have been awarded the Jack Matthews International Scholarship upon my acceptance to Trent.” Jesse Doka, Economics and International Development Studies joint major from Niamey, Niger. The Centres of Knowledge: A New Way to Talk About Trent
Trent University’s
Centre of Knowledge in the Environment
The Centre of Knowledge in the Environment is the first of several virtual Centres to be launched at Trent leading up to the University’s milestone 50th anniversary in 2014. Trent University has been a leader in the environment since its inception in 1964. Since the Centres of Knowledge aim to capitalize on what Trent does best, the focus of this first Centre was a natural fit.
With a broad focus on interdisciplinary studies, Trent’s Centre of Knowledge in the Environment combines cuttingedge scholarly research from a range of disciplines including aquatic science and biogeochemistry, environmental and natural resource studies, geography, and material science. Building on an existing reputation of excellence, Trent will continue to advance the frontiers of knowledge in these pivotal areas in the coming decades as these learnings become increasingly fundamental to human survival.
“I can remember my first visit to Trent in the autumn of 1965. The area had numerous lakes within less than an hour’s drive, in a wide variety of geological settings. The site of Trent is unquestionably one of the most beautiful settings for a university in the world. I signed on without hesitation. In the intervening years, Trent has become one of the world’s foremost limnological centers. I am very proud to have my name associated with the developments here.”
In essence, the Centres of Knowledge at Trent University provide an exciting new way to talk about the exceptional expertise, facilities and strengths of this institution. They are a lens through which the Trent story can be told. Being “virtual” in nature, the Centres of Knowledge recognize the University’s intellectual capital, our world-class faculty, as the engine that drives innovation and student success. Each Centre will provide targeted opportunities for philanthropic investment tied directly to Trent’s academic and research plans.
Dr. David Schindler
Academic activity of the Centres is supported by: Globally-recognized research Exceptional teaching Engaged students and alumni State-of-the-art facilities Outstanding equipment and library resources Energetic collaborations with the community An internationalized campus
World-renowned limnologist and former Trent professor; David Schindler Professorship in Aquatic Science at Trent University established in his honour in 2008
2008
Four Core Centres Over the next several years, Trent will launch four interdisciplinary and inclusive Centres of Knowledge balanced among the humanities, social sciences, sciences and professional programs. In 2008, the first two Centres were approved by Trent’s Board of Governors – the Centre of Knowledge in the Environment and the Centre of Knowledge in Humanity and Culture.

CCAE Gold Medal for Trent
10
In 2008, a special partnership with The Peterborough Examiner helped Trent to win the top prize from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) in the 2008 Prix D’Excellence Awards – a Gold Award for the category Best Donor Recognition Program in the country for its campaign, symposium and announcement honouring the Patterson/Drain Family in connection with the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics. The Examiner’s publisher Darren Murphy donated the space for five full-colour ads that peaked interest in the community while explaining the concept of an Endowed Chair in the weeks leading up to the event.
“I chose to come to Trent University because of its welcoming atmosphere surrounded by nature. I immediately felt like Trent was a second home, not just through the campus, but also with my fellow students, the professors and all individuals who work here.” Marina Berbatiotis, Cultural Studies major from Peterborough, Ontario

Giving From Within:
Honouring Trent Faculty through Philanthropy
Prof. John Wadland
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” Henry B. Adams, American novelist and historian
Prof. Carlyle Smith
Prof. Geoffrey Eathorne
Inside each of the tens of thousands of students who have passed through Trent’s doors over the past 44 years, is a story about a special professor who brought learning to life for them. These connections that faculty make with their students – and with each other – has steadily become a defining feature of Trent University. Many of these beloved professors are now preparing for retirement. Honouring them, and also by extension their contributions to Trent’s celebrated learning environment, is a matter of great importance to staff, faculty and alumni across the University. “In its brief history, Trent University has developed a culture in which there is an unusually close relationship between faculty and the students they teach,” explains Dr. Elizabeth Popham, chair of Trent’s Department of English Literature. “When a faculty member has devoted his or her career to teaching, it seems especially appropriate that the legacy of concern for students be recognized and continued in the form of awards and bursaries.”
English Literature Department 2014 Fund Prof. Popham and her colleagues have established the Department of English Literature 2014 Fund, an initiative to recognize nine English professors who will be retiring between 2008 and Trent’s milestone 50th anniversary in 2014. “Most of these are the young faculty hired by the University’s founders in the late 1960s and 1970s who went on to build the Department of English Literature as it exists today,” says Prof. Popham. “Rather than set up nine individual awards or bursaries, members of the Department of English Literature felt that the best way to acknowledge their contribution was to create a fund which would enable the department to increase existing endowments, finance residencies by writers and scholars, and develop and enrich scholarships and prizes, awards and bursaries for our undergraduate and graduate students.”
Prof. David Page
Outstanding Faculty Honoured Other funds set up recently to honour the contributions of Trent’s outstanding faculty include the Anthropology Faculty Prize, the Colin Taylor Award, the Geoffrey Eathorne Award, the Carlyle Smith Bursary, the John Wadland Tribute Fund, and the David Morrison Fund for International Education. Each award reflects the unique contributions professors have made to their students, their field of study and to Trent, while providing a meaningful way for colleagues to pay tribute to their fellow scholars. The response from the Trent community has been tremendous; something Professor Ian Storey experienced first hand when he coordinated the David Page Prize in Latin to recognize the top student in Latin 100, Prof. Page’s favourite subject to teach. “We announced this fund in late spring of 2007 and by September 2007 had received $4,200, well more than the amount needed to endow the fund,” he said. “We received support from within our department, from colleagues in many other departments, staff, alumni, and private friends of David.” Retiring faculty are quite moved when they discover the University community has chosen to celebrate them in this way. Upon learning of the overwhelming support of the bursary set up in his honour, Dr. Colin Taylor remarked, “I am deeply honoured that an award of this type has been established in my name, and it is wonderful that friends and colleagues have contributed to it so generously. When combined with matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program, this means that over the years many deserving students will receive much-needed financial support.”
