Transforming Futures: Trent University’s 50th Anniversary Campaign Report on Philanthropy
$50 Million Campaign Volume 1 Issue 2 June to September 2010
Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics American scholar Dr. Kathryn Norlock takes on role as Trent University’s inaugural endowed chairholder An official welcome and inaugural public lecture with Dr. Kathryn Norlock will be held at Trent University on November 3, 2010. Check the website for details.
“Establishing an endowed Chair in Ethics shows Trent’s commitment to the importance of thinking critically about the most fundamental questions of our lives and our shared responsibilities,” says Dr. Kathryn Norlock, a renowned researcher and scholar in the field of ethics and the ethics of forgiveness. After an international search, Dr. Norlock was named the inaugural chairholder of the Kenneth Mark Drain Chair in Ethics at Trent University. Dr. Norlock, previously an associate professor of Philosophy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, officially takes on her prestigious new role at Trent in September, three years after the University announced the creation of the endowed chair, the first in Trent’s history.
The Chair in Ethics was established by members of the Patterson and Drain families through a generous $2 million gift, the largest gift given to Trent by living donors. The Chair is named in honour of Kenneth Mark Drain, who lived and worked in Peterborough County all his life. “I can’t tell you how humbled I am to be the first to occupy a position created in honour of Mr. Drain,” Dr. Norlock says. “As chair, I hope to contribute to the University’s 50th anniversary and the Centres of Knowledge. I also hope to further my own goal of involving many voices in discussions of ethics. As a teacher, though, I’m most looking forward to working with Trent students and meeting with new and different classes.”
Trent’s $50 Million Campaign Creating a Stable Base for Future Learning and Discovery Publicly launched in October 2009, Trent University’s $50 Million Campaign is the largest philanthropic campaign in the history of the University. Developed through a consultation process anchored in the University’s academic and research planning processes, our philanthropic plan represents an ambitious effort to realize $50 million in new investments by Trent’s 50th anniversary in 2014.

“This new sport and recreation centre is an exciting addition to the community and will help build even stronger ties between the University and the surrounding region.” – Justin Chiu ’76
Inspired Giving
International Alumnus Justin Chiu Donates $1 Million to Name Trent’s Stadium The campaign to renew and expand the Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre received a significant boost in August with a transformational $1 million gift from international alumnus Justin Chiu ’76 to name the University’s outdoor stadium. The Justin Chiu stadium is a focal point of the new Centre, which offers all users a full-spectrum indoor and outdoor athletics and recreation experience unparalleled anywhere in the region.
“I take great pride in being part of the Trent and Peterborough communities. I had excellent, sweet memories here in the 1970s and I am sure there will be more in the future,” Mr. Chiu said, adding, “This new sport and recreation centre is an exciting addition to the community and will help build even stronger ties between the University and the surrounding region. It will also bring further international profile to Trent as more and more national and international events are drawn to the modern, state-of-the-art facilities.”
Justin Chiu graduated from Trent in 1978 with a joint degree in Sociology and Economics. In his native Hong Kong where he is an executive director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited, Mr. Chiu is described as one of the most inspired and innovative property developers in the city. This is the second $1 million gift Mr. Chiu has donated to Trent. The first was made in May 2009 to create two new endowed funds at the University – the Justin Chiu International Scholarship and the Rita Chiu Study Abroad Bursaries.
