1964 was quite a year The year Trent University was founded was also the year that the Canadian flag design was finalized, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and Nelson Mandela gave his famous “I Am Prepared to Die” speech.

We’re older than you are, but young enough to believe we can change the world.

So, there’s little wonder that Trent University embodied right from the beginning a strong social conscience, optimism and a sense that together as a learning community we have the power to change the world. Today that spirit is expressed in the dynamic interplay of research, teaching and learning at Trent, which enhance and energize the student experience - and have made Trent renowned for making valued and socially responsible contributions the world over. For more on Trent just follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/trentuniversity

AND 2010 CONTINUED OUR SUCCESS •

95% of Trent students are employed within six months of graduating, above the provincial average for universities

More than 90% of students consistently express satisfaction with the quality of teaching, and opportunity to develop lasting friendships on campus

At an average of 19.7 to 1 at our Peterborough and Oshawa campuses, Trent has one of the best faculty-to-student ratios of any university in Canada

In the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report, Trent was ranked number one for environmental commitment

“This is the place to go to find your niche in the universe. Professors and other staff will be your guides and mentors as you navigate through the learning curves and transitions of life. You will leave Trent with a strong sense of self and purpose.” Maryam Monsef, Fourth-year Student, Psychology and Biology

Trent is one of those places that serves as a launching pad for great careers. Part of our mission is to create opportunities for students, staff and faculty to flourish and develop as individuals and global citizens. We work hard every day to see this through. To us, Trent is more than a university. It’s a place for people with a passion for knowledge to soar.

Trent alumnus Dr. James Orbinski is the past president of Doctors Without Borders (MSF). This veteran of many of the world’s most disturbing and complex humanitarian emergencies accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of MSF in 1999. Dr. Orbinski’s “deeply personal” and “deeply political” best-selling book, An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action in the Twenty-first Century, was named winner of the ninth annual Shaughnessy Cohen Prize and received an award from the Writers’ Trust of Canada.

Dalal Al-Waheidi, another Trent alumnus, has gone on to become the Executive Director of Free The Children. Ms. Al-Waheidi credits her education at Trent and the International Studies Program with enabling her to “find her niche.” She certainly has done that, having been named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. http://bit.ly/Trentu_Dalal

“Do your undergrad where you can grow academically and socially,” says Darren Huston, who graduated from Trent, where he was the manager of the student pub, and went on to become president and CEO of Microsoft Japan. Today he is leading the development of Microsoft’s end-to-end consumer business in markets all over the world, making a difference in millions of people’s lives. http://bit.ly/Trent_Huston

Making a difference in the world isn’t a slogan, it’s what our alumni are doing every day. 12

Does Trent make peterborough? or does peterborough make Trent? Yes.

Trent and Peterborough live in harmony, each making the other better. For its part, the Greater Peterborough Area, with a population of over 135,000, offers all the amenities of an urban area, but like Trent, in a more relaxed and intimate setting. The city is alive with shopping, culture and nightlife. A quick stroll through downtown Peterborough will have you confronting funky clothing stores, art galleries, museums and cafes. A vibrant music and performance scene is a part of the city’s vibe. All just 90 minutes from Toronto, Canada’s largest city.

Is it a city or a park? Yes.

Scan this to watch Ode’min Giizis 2010 video: http://bit.ly/aDS68P

As the centre of the Kawarthas tourism region, beautiful natural scenery and outdoor recreation abounds. The city itself is located along the famous Trent-Severn Waterway and its collection of locks runs through the heart of the city, as well as our campus. For our part, Trent students, faculty and staff add a unique energy and sense of optimism to the area. One that is quickly noticed, but not soon forgotten. You can walk, bike, in-line skate or cross-country ski to downtown Peterborough on the Rotary Trail that connects Trent to downtown.

“I plan to stay in Peterborough. Over the last four years, I have fallen more and more in love with the city. Its small town feel and thriving arts community have made it a great place to live, study and be.” Jessica Bommarito, Fourth-year Student, Business Administration

Athletics and Academic Integrity

Opening September 2010 the new Trent Community Sport and Recreation Centre featuring:

When a student earns the right to play on a varsity team at Trent, with it comes an expectation concerning academic performance too. Varsity athletes who fail to keep their grades in all courses above 60% are restricted from playing. It’s that simple. In short, at Trent you’ve got to work hard to play hard.
