Trent’s Undergraduate Colleges: your community, your home in the larger university

At Trent University, everyone, whether you live on campus or off – or study full- or part-time, you will find a home in a special community of learning that we call your college. It will be your local neighbourhood. Each college offers its own rich and varied intellectual, cultural, social and recreational life, as well as academic and support services to help you succeed. In fact, studies have shown that students who engage in the life of a college have higher rates of success in university. Special lecture series, informal gatherings, co-curricular learning workshops, seminars or leadership opportunities are just a few of the ways your college will help you get connected with other students and faculty. Each college has its own character and traditions which enhance the living and learning environment.

Lady Eaton College

Champlain College

Otonabee College

Gzowski College

Located on a hillside near a collection of trails and paths overlooking the university.

Champlain College embodies the same spirit of adventure and discovery as the famous French explorer for which it is named. Situated on the west bank of the Otonabee River, Champlain is a scenic place for both casual and formal activities. At the centre of the college is the impressive Great Hall, a multi-purpose space for studying, public lectures, concerts and receptions, and for hangingout. Champlain is home to the Trent International Program, the Seasoned Spoon student-cooperative organic café, as well as the Trent Global Living Community, La Maison Francaise and Active Living.

The word “Otonabee,” from the Anishnaabe language, means “fast and boiling waters” and it gives you a sense of the exciting and energetic life at this college. But harmonizing with our natural environment doesn’t stop there – even the architecture of OC is designed to look like the rolling drumlins that surround Trent. A thriving neighbourhood right in the heart of campus since 1972. trentu.ca/colleges/otonabee

Trent’s newest college with the most modern living facilities. The colours of the building are derived from the four colours of a medicine wheel: yellow, red, black and white. As the college integrates Trent’s First Peoples House of Learning, Gzowski enables students to pursue their passion in the same way their college namesake, famed CBC journalist and broadcaster, Peter Gzowski, followed his passion for Canada, its culture, the north, the Aboriginal people and the environment.

NEW Programs

We have launched exciting new programs with your future in mind. While you may already be thinking about a particular area of study, we encourage students to explore a range of disciplines at Trent to enhance your degree and your options.

Archaeology (B.A. or B.Sc.)

JOURNALISM (B.A. or B.Sc.)+

MEDIA STUDIES (B.A.)+

Archaeology is the interdisciplinary study of the human past through material remains–the artefacts, art, and architecture that people created, used, and discarded many years ago. Students learn the field methods, laboratory techniques, and theories that archaeologists use to reconstruct and understand the ancient cultures and past civilizations of the Americas, Europe, and the pre-Classical and Classical Mediterranean world.

The journalist’s role is to tell society’s stories so that citizens are able to understand their world and make informed decisions. Story telling is at the heart of the new fully-integrated TrentLoyalist Journalism program that prepares graduates to be informed, critically-aware, and highly technically skilled journalists. Combining the best of university and college education, graduates will earn a Trent joint-major honours (B.A. or B.Sc.) degree in Journalism and another discipline of their choice, as well as an Ontario college advanced diploma in Journalism (Online, Print and Broadcast) from Loyalist College. Depending on the discipline, the program can be completed in four or five years of full-time study.

More than forty years ago, Marshall McLuhan famously said: “each of us lives several hundred years in a decade.” Since then, the rate of technological change has increased exponentially. In the Media Studies program, we invite students to engage in complex questions about society and the media. What happens to our concepts of community, memory, knowledge, the Individual, place, and time with each new media innovation? What does it mean to be “media literate” today? How do contemporary media environments work differently from those in the past, and to what effect?

Why Trent? Interdisciplinary program links classes in Anthropology and Ancient History & Classics with the sciences Opportunities to specialize in Anthropological Archaeology or Classical Archaeology Archaeological field schools in Ontario, Belize, and the Mediterranean. Internationally known faculty conduct innovative research around the world Specialized labs for bioarchaeology, GIS, archaeozoology, and lithic analysis TUARC (Trent University Archaeological Research Centre) connects students to professional archaeologists and bioarchaeologists

Humanities at Trent ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN STUDIES (B.A.)

CULTURAL STUDIES (B.A.)

FRENCH STUDIES (MODERN LANGUAGES) (B.A.)

Ancient Greece and Rome were the basis of modern Western civilization. This interdisciplinary program investigates the history, society, literature and physical remains from c. 3000 B.C. to 650 A.D., within the larger multicultural context of the ancient Mediterranean. Explore issues that were as relevant back then as they are today, including state and empire, warfare, class struggles, the economy, religion, gender, cultural heritage, and the genius of the human spirit.

What is human nature and does it change when the culture changes? How can we talk meaningfully about everyday life without falling into cliché? Is technology external to us or is it an extension of our bodies? What is the function of art? These are the types of complicated questions we encourage you to engage as you study the works of challenging artists, writers, and theorists in a diverse range of courses in visual arts, cultural theory, media, film, theatre, music and creative writing.

Dedicated to small group teaching, French Studies at Trent offers an array of courses on French language, Francophone cultures, literatures and linguistics.
