Lets clarify a couple of things from the start. There is no Silk Road. The term is often wrongly used instead of the correct Silk Routes – plural because it’s actually a whole network of ancient well-used roads and seaways, once the basis of trade from China to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It officially began from China’s old capital of Xi’an, and today that’s still the starting point for tourists who want to follow famous travellers, such as Marco Polo, along the historic byways. Not many now attempt it by camel, of course. Instead there are trains, coaches, trucks, or the ubiquitous 4 x 4. The name is derived from the main Chinese export, as silk was greatly favoured by emperors and governors of ancient Rome. But Western and Asian traders also took goods such as cotton and grapes to the Imperial Kingdom

Xi’an isn’t the most picturesque city, but the

intermittent ruins of dark and overgrown masonry.

The first part of the journey is through the 1000km long Gansu Corridor, squeezed by the Tibetan Plateau to the south, and the wilds of Inner Mongolia to the north. At Lanzhou, factories making use of the mighty Yellow River belch out smoke from a forest of chimneys, but once clear of the city the atmosphere changes notably. Suddenly you’re heading away from the busy 21st Century life, and towards a land steeped in the past. The mountain air thins, and the notorious winds of the north began to tease with a few sudden gusts. On the hillsides shepherds in thick cloaks wander amongst their sorry looking flocks, their faces tired and weather-beaten.

The oases come and go over time, as water finds new routes underground leaving once busy towns suddenly worthless. Decaying ruins of old oasis villages are quite common, as they crumble back into the desert. The people who live in this inhospitable land don’t see many foreigners. The local dress sense is as bright as the flowers, with vivid colours and ornate designs on both men and women. Music in cafes and bars is distinctly middle eastern, and the food has a definite taste of Turkey – with kebabs and flat bread everywhere. Yet the majority of travellers are from the East, or tourists on a similar trip. Some divert northwards here to cross the bulk of Mongolia, and on into Russia and Siberia. That’s a long, but amazing journey of diverse landscapes, wildlife, and people. Back on the Silk Route, the next stop is Turfan, where the Gobi begins to blend seamlessly into the Taklimakan. Turfan is known as the City of Grapes, but be warned – there is a fine for picking any, no matter how publicly they are growing. Vines stretch alongside almost every street, making good use of this The temperature variations here are huge. For a large part of the year the land is frozen. But in summer,

Perhaps the most impressive monument is the Humayan Tomb. Make a diversion to the unmissable Taj Mahal once you leave the city, before heading off on the final ‘spur’ route east to Nepal. The mountain kingdom is famed for Mount Everest, of course, but it does have so much more to offer. It’s a paradise for nature lovers, a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists and Hindus, and a land of great natural and cultural experiences. In summary, it’s probably the perfect place in which to end an epic journey.

The Khunjerab Pass is the start of the real jagged mountainous terrain, following the river of the same name. The road clings precariously to cliff sides, with tunnels and ledges blasted out of solid rock. Landslides are frequent, and driving in any kind Kashgar gives you a real sense of achievement; a feeling of conquering one of the world’s great deserts. How must it have felt to the weary Silk Route traders, who would have taken some three months to travel this far? It’s also still very much a travellers’ crossroads, and those in the know meet at the lively ‘Johns Café’ where tales of bravado and amazing journeys are recounted, and essential inside information traded about the routes you are about to take. The Indian route winds south through Tibet, Kashmir, and over the Himalayas, before reaching Delhi. Once outside Kashgar the desert seems a lifetime away, replaced by olive groves, rice and wheat fields, and apricot trees. By the time you reach the Ghez River you begin to feel that you’re returning to civilisation, and at something above 3000m, the narrow rocky gorge levels out to the vast Pamir plateau. Here Kirghiz shepherds in fur hats and long cloaks tend their huge flocks on horseback.

of bad weather is not advised – because the road can literally wash from under you. Crossing the Himalayas is slow, arduous, and breathtaking. Hotels and provisions are much easier to find here, although the people seem far less helpful than the desert inhabitants of China. The food becomes notably Indian, with spices and rice the norm. Once you drop down towards the plain it’s a constant stream of traffic, and the approach to Delhi feels less that you are on some grand historic route, and more akin to the commuter rush to work. For many, Delhi is the end of the trip, and is certainly a rewarding goal. The old part of the city was the seat of the mighty Moghul Empire, and sights such as the 17th Century Red Fort are still impressive. A rickshaw ride through the chaotic, bustling, colourful streets will take you to the British Raj’s showpiece capital, with superb gardens and the Presidents Palace. www.traveladdictmagz.com

It has architecture feature of Tang Dynasty and also assimilated very much features from both Nepalese and Indian Buddhist Temples. Tibet is probably the only destination among the Himalayas that’s not as known for its adventure circuits as the rest are. But do not underestimate this destinations as just another Trans-Himalayan area of the Himalayas. Tourism in Tibet offers much more than Buddhism, monasteries and cold desert-like weather.

Climate Tibetan winters, as might be supposed, are fiercely cold. But for half the year, strong sunlight warms the thin air, making most days in Lhasa comfortably mild and, owing to protective mountains, relatively windless. Summer temperatures hover above 30’C (high-80s F) and only to drop to a searing -23’C (-10’F) in midwinter. The best time to visit is from late spring to early fall.

Culinary Tsampa, dough made from barley flour, is the staple food in Tibet, with meat dishes being mainly yak, goat or mutton. The yak butter tea is also a must-try.

The next adventure was early morning rafting. This involved a one-hour walk through a series of rice fields and a small village to the “put-in on the riverbank. Paddling downstream it is easy to lose yourself in nature. Only the occasional swooping of eagles soaring above interrupted the calm stillness of the deep gorge. As the river narrowed we passed a series of large waterfalls cascading from the steep mountainous terrain. Several male iguanas posed stoically on the large boulders, bathing themselves in the full sun. The rapids appeared in small bursts, but mostly it was a trip down a lazy river and just the remedy for finishing a spectacular seven-day trip into Torajaland. For anyone who wants to experience a fascinating culture, set in a beautiful mountain environment then Tana Toraja and its riches lay waiting for you. One of the secrets of visiting Selayar is discovering how to get there. The very fact it takes nine bumpy hours overland to reach this unspoilt, idyllic, tropical sea gypsy paradise, makes this little known tucked away treat in the South of Sulawesi a pleasure. Places that are this far removed from the trappings of mainstream tourism lead you on a discovery: an adventurous travel experience that is truly unique. Selayar Island is eighty kilometres long and teeming with rainforest, white sandy beaches and sits in the Asian coral triangle. The clear blue waters and scattering of twenty-one small islands and atolls make for perfect snorkelling and diving opportunities, opening up a world of colourful corals, huge sponges, sea fans, turtles, dugongs, rays, tuna, parrot fish – the variety and proliferation of this underwater sea adventure is virtually unsurpassed in the world.

Cubadak Island is located in Mandeh territory, and was known in the past as Pulau Pincuran Talu. It is located in Koto XI Tarusan sub district, which is west of kampong Mandeh. The tourists named this island “the paradise of the south”, the island has an area of 15 square km, is uninhabited except for a few isolated fishermen’s huts, and is completely covered by a native rainforest. Many kinds of birds and bigger animals live in this forest: hornbills,

The sea temperature is constant at 29 degrees Celsius both on the surface and down to 30 meters, making snorkelling and diving activities particularly enjoyable. The village is frequently visited by monkeys, wild boars at night, monitor lizard all very shy, distant and harmless. There are no dangers on the ground or in the sea. Water is drinkable everywhere including in the bathrooms. There is no malaria in this part of Sumatra, absolutely none on the island. The drinking water is diverted down to the village from a source in the hill; its quality has been tested and measured in Western Europe and Indonesia. 52 52

A: Our will to conserve Indonesian cultures have made us found this foundation. By protecting our culture it can attract tourists to visit Indonesia which has influence over our national cultures. Thus, don’t let us have no our own traditional clothes and be unable to appreciate the

such as, organizing events at the Temple of Borobudur but in Lingkar Budaya we have another goal, it is urging the government to separate culture with tourism. Q: Why has it to be separated? A: In the past culture used to be under Ministry of Culture and Education. That was just right. But culture and tourism are now under one department. That is Ministry for Tourism and Culture. We think the minister just focuses on tourism. He pays less attention for culture sector. Therefore we urge the government to consider separating it. Well, tourism is different with culture. Tourism is to selling and culture is to conserve and protect. But, anyhow, from culture sector you can also sell it that called arts. Such as art of painting, art of dancing, sculpture, local languages, soap opera, etc. Q: How far is your effort to separate the two sectors? A: So far we have sent mails to the President, MPR / People’s Consultative Assembly and others, such as political parties. Some political parties agree to separate it but some

A: So, at first infrastructures must be provided well and facilities are available as well, such as clean restrooms, hotels for example; hotel in Komodo Island. So far I knew the related parties show less interest in that matter. As you know, with all of that we can attract tourists easily to come to Indonesia. Q: As we know, conserving cultures is part of tourism and can become one of cultural tourism destinations. So, what do you think to organize it better and make it more attractive for tourists? What has to do? A: A lot of efforts we have done for it, also done by group of film artists and culture artists and they still have a participation in protecting and introduce the cultures, such as introducing our traditional puppets (wayang orang, wayang kulit, wayang kulit). Therefore, we must appreciate their efforts who introduce it to the International. What is more there is a gamelan group whose players are westerners. It is one of efforts of making our culture more attractive besides infrastructures. Q: Once again to make it clear, why has culture to be separated with tourism? A: Because it is just different and from the beginning we have founded this foundation is to focus on culture sector which has more aspects to conserve and protect and also has influence on tourism sector.

don’t. However, I think culture is more important than tourism because Indonesia has more culture traces than tourism.
