Scar (2017) for violin, double bass, and percussion ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Trey Makler

Notes

Percussion

Each page is divided into timed sections separated by solid bar lines. The given timings are approximations and may be adjusted as necessary by the performers. For performances with dance, visual cues are provided throughout the score. Within the timed sections are events. A dashed line shows corresponding events, which may be simultaneous (vertical) or reactive (diagonal). Events that are not marked by a dashed line need not correspond directly with another event and should be performed relative to their placement within the timed section as the performer sees fit. A thin arrow between techniques represents a gradual change from one technique to another. Box notation should last for the length of the attached arrow and should follow given instructions.

Instruments snare drum large wooden wind chimes waterphone splash cymbal a small variety of tin cans and woodblocks Implements 2 coins bass bow brushes superball mallet drumsticks

Gestural events are guidelines and need not be exact.

Scar was created in collaboration with choreographer Ethan Colangelo as part of the 2017 Composer and Choreographer Workshop at the Juilliard School. Approximate duration: 9’ !
