Get Involved & Get Active! Our community is built on relationships. In 2016, as we celebrated Coquitlam 125, we reflected on Coquitlam’s rich history while sparking new connections. From Neighbourhood Nights and block parties to cultural events and festivals, friendships have been forged and existing connections solidified. As we wrap up our 125th year, the City of Coquitlam reflects on the bonds that have been created. Thank you to everyone who took part in the Coquitlam 125 legacy events and initiatives, which have added laughter, music, colour and togetherness to our parks and streets. Stories have been told. New stories were created. It’s about feeling connected to this place we call home and the people who surround us.

Here in Coquitlam, we are fortunate to be surrounded by nature. From Minnekhada’s High Knoll to the salmon-rich Hoy Creek, get outdoors this winter to explore the wilderness. The City’s Outdoor Recreation programs offer an opportunity to go for a hike or participate in other recreational activities with those who share your interests. It’s a great way to get out of the house and expand your social network. And let’s not forget the City’s recreation centres, where you can convene with friends or make new connections during the cooler months. Offering everything from drop-in recreation to ongoing courses, they provide something for all ages. Visit coquitlam.ca/prc to peruse our Recreation, Parks and Culture page, or coquitlam.ca/signmeup to see which programs are available.

PARKS BAD SEED: Weed Out Invasive Plants Invasive plants harm the environment Invasive plants kill native plants and destroy Coquitlam’s beautiful natural habitat. They spread aggressively and destroy the habitat of fish birds and other wildlife. Quite simply, they are bad seeds! We need your help—invasive plants often get established when residents dump their garden waste or flower baskets into the forest. Instead, use your green waste bin and help stop the spread of invasive plants! For more information on invasive plants or to volunteer visit coquitlam.ca/badseed or email parkswork@coquitlam.ca.

Park Spark Bring Coquitlam Parks Alive! Invest your time, experience or expertise in Coquitlam parks! There are many ways to get involved and spark your connection. Host a neighbourhood park cleanup day, donate a Little Library to your park or join the Adopt-A-Trail Program to adopt a trail near you. Are you an organization or business looking to give back? Connect with us and we can work together to develop an engaging and rewarding experience! For more information and to see upcoming activities, visit coquitlam.ca/parkspark or email parkspark@coquitlam.ca.

The Inspiration Garden Drop By & Bee Inspired! Located at the corner of Pipeline Road and Guildford Way in Town Centre Park, this learning and teaching display garden is open year round and offers programs and tours from March to October. Drop by to see our amazing collection of trees, shrubs and perennials, all suitable for residential gardens. Be sure to check out our lawn alternatives display plants that not only look good, but are resistant to chafer beetle damage and drought! To see upcoming programs and to find out more information about volunteering at the garden, visit coquitlam.ca/garden. To register your class for a school tour, email garden@coquitlam.ca.

not ours In our Center, we are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach and the beautiful nature of British Columbia. We are proud to practice an emergent curriculum on a daily basis. Emergent curriculum is a non-traditional style of teaching that presents children with the gift of discovering the world around them by encouraging them to explore life through their own interests and passions. The art of research already exists in the hands of children acutely sensitive to the pleasure of surprise. The wonder of learning, of knowing, of understanding is one of the first, fundamental sensations each human being expects from experiences faced alone or with others. – Loris Malaguzzi

New to skating?

Review these FAQs before you start. WHAT LEVEL DO I REGISTER FOR? We recommend all new participants begin at our introductory Parent & Tot 1 (2 1/2 – 5 yrs), Preschool 1 (3 – 5 yrs), School Age 1 (6 – 12 yrs) or Youth/Adult Beginner (13 yrs +) levels. If you have already completed skating lessons at a different facility, we can do our best to fit you into the right level in one of 2 ways: 1. Skating Evaluation: Come to one of our public skating sessions and one of our staff will conduct an on-ice skating evaluation to determine the proper level. 2. Show Past Progress Card: Show our registration staff a copy of your past Progress Card from the other skating program and we will find the closest fit in our skating program.

WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR? » Waterproof pants, such as snow pants or rain pants. » A warm jacket or sweatshirt. » Gloves or mittens, waterproof is best. » CSA approved helmet (no bike helmets), face cage recommended for kids 7 & under. » Knee and elbow pads, worn under clothing, are optional. Wearing pads over clothes can make it slippery when trying to stand. » Skates, should be fitting properly and in good repair. Skate and helmet rentals are available at the Skate Shop. Hockey skates should be one size smaller than shoe size. Figure skates should be the same size as the shoes.

CAN I RENT EQUIPMENT? Rentals are paid for at the Front Desk and redeemed at the Skate Shop. Arrive early as there can often be a line at the front desk. The 10 swipe-pass benefits include a discounted rate as well as using the same equipment all set. RENTAL RATES

A blooming great place to live Thanks to all of you who took part in the 2016 Communities in Bloom events! This has been a year for the history books. We celebrated our community gardens, created a photo library of 125 local gardens, tasted food grown in public spaces through the Coquitlam Munch initiative and even introduced a new variety of rose called “Coquitlam.” Together, we have made our community a more beautiful place to be. And it hasn’t gone unnoticed. The City of Coquitlam has been named the winner in the national Over-50,000 population category of the 2016 Communities in Bloom competition. This award recognizes a community’s civic pride and beautification efforts. We couldn’t have done it without all of you, who worked together to continue to make Coquitlam a place where people want to live and do business. Stay tuned for some exciting projects planned for 2017 as we focus on Pollinator Gardens and Canada’s 150th birthday. For more about Coquitlam in Bloom, visit coquitlam.ca/cib

THANK YOU FOR TELLING US YOUR STORIES AND HELPING US CREATE OUR OWN! We couldn’t have honoured Coquitlam’s rich 125 year history and imagined our dynamic future without you. Read all the stories we shared at coquitlam125.ca/ourstories.
