TIME TO GET

O

ne of our wedding guests recently posted a picture on Facebook of the CD (that oughta tell you how long I’ve been married) we gave out as favours at our wedding. Sadly, I don’t even have a copy anymore, so when I saw the list of tunes we were listening to in 2004, it took me back to the occasion. That’s what songs do – they are powerful reminders of a time, a place, and a feeling. I don’t think I knew how significant a first-dance song was until I stepped out onto the floor on our wedding night and danced in front of our family and friends. Ours was Van Morrison’s You’re My Woman. My husband chose the song, which is an ode to love, family and commitment – not a bad soundtrack to start our life together. At the wedding, and on the gift CD, we included our respective parents’ wedding songs, too. We also had their wedding pictures and our grandparents’ wedding pictures on the wedding book table. The songs and the pictures were a way to connect our families and to honour the lineage.

Weddings truly are about family – whether it’s the one that raised you, or the one you are forging with your new partner.

After my own wedding, what I realized was that weddings truly are about family – whether it’s the one that raised you, or the one you are forging with your new partner. With that in mind, we have crafted an accessories/dress inspiration board derived from the perfect tunes to suit the looks. We also get a sneak peek into three gorgeous and unique weddings: one that travels from sky to sea, another that merges tradition with urban architecture, and finally, a relaxed weekend wedding on the lake. We hope you enjoy this issue of Hitched and feel inspired to think about the soundtrack, and look, of your wedding.

Exciting news for the Hitched magazine team. Our art director, Matt Blair, recently proposed to his partner, Casey-Marie Nicholson. The elaborate proposal took place at Phantom Lake, where they arrived via seaplane, courtesy of Sea to Sky Air. The couple’s wedding date is set for July 15, at the Cheakamus Centre in Squamish. Billies Flower House will provide the flowers; invitations from Minted. Rings by Tacori (with help from Rodan Jewellers); photography by Whistler Wedding Collective. We want to send him and his beautiful fiancée our best wishes on their special day, and in their lives together.

CONGRATULATIONS

~ Niki Hope, Editor

Less is truly more when it comes to the minimalist bride. It doesn’t take much to make her shine, just like Adele’s hauntingly beautiful version of Bob Dylan’s simple-yet-poetic Make You Feel My Love. It’s the same with this bride, who doesn’t need much more than a few delicate touches to convey so much.

The Arlo gown, $1,600, with Roberta cape, $600, from Grace Loves Lace.

The Hawk gown by Rue de Seine, a line available at Union Bridal in Gastown, price upon request.

London blue topaz bangle, $112, by Leah Alexandra.

The darling of the 1990’s alternative scene, Mazzy Star was a band with a shy singer, Hope Sandoval, known for her soft vocals and mystical sound. This bride isn’t interested in convention, but instead carves out a path based on her own instincts. She’s romantic and a bit edgy.

Madeline hydrangea crown by Luna Bea, a line available at Union Bridal in Gastown, price upon request.

Stella Leather Choker, $360, at Grace Loves Lace.

B Brian Atwood suede tassel pumps, $220, at Hudson’s Bay.

Van Morrison’s dreamy Irish voice and soulful lyrics are the perfect soundtrack to this bride’s free-spirited nuptials. Just like the 1970s – when Morrison released his seminal work, Moondance, which featured Crazy Love – The Dreamer appreciates tassels, turquoise and lace. Never one for conventions, she lives from the heart and is known to go a little crazy for love. Salita earrings, $360, and Chase silk choker, $80, from Grace Loves Lace.

andice-May Langlois always planned to wear her mother’s wedding dress. But as her March 26, 2016, wedding to Christopher Davies approached, her father faced health challenges that required her mother to put aside the project of altering the gown. With a month left to go before the ceremony, no other seamstress could commit to finish the job, so she turned to the resource she had leaned on for much of her wedding inspiration: Pinterest. “You can’t just go out and buy a wedding dress a month before,” she says. “I was a little heartbroken that I didn’t get to wear my mother’s dress, but it makes you realize what’s really important.” Pinterest guided Candice-May to the low-backed Inca Gown by Australian bridal label Grace Loves Lace – a perfect match for the wedding’s “casual but glamorous bohemian” theme. The studio happened to have one in her size, so Candice-May took a chance and ordered the gown to be shipped to Vancouver from Australia. It arrived in time, and after only very minor alterations, it was perfect. Problem solved.

t started with a look. When Kerry Liu first caught a passing glimpse of Jasmine Wong at UBC in 2006, he literally stopped in his tracks and walked backwards to sneak another glance – and Jasmine caught him in the act. It was the start of a friendship that evolved into love four years later, and marriage six years after that. The couple has lived in Toronto since 2011, but with both of their families in Vancouver and many friends and family flying in from Asia for their wedding on July 9, 2016, Vancouver was the natural place for them to say their vows. That left Jasmine and Kerry to plan their wedding – including two ceremonies – from thousands of kilometres away. “It was really important to find a venue that could manage everything without me having to micromanage,” Jasmine says. They chose the Vancouver Club within two weeks of their engagement, knowing the service and food would impress their 230 guests, and that the historic building didn’t require much decoration. Having the whole building to themselves provided space for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony upstairs before the wedding ceremony in the lobby and a seated dinner in the grand ballroom. When the bride started getting ready at her parents’ house at 5 a.m., the skies were dark with rain and thunderstorms – but the ominous weather began to fade by the time she put on her tea ceremony dress, custom-made in Shanghai. It was, after all, a lucky day based on Chinese tradition. “As soon as we were leaving the house, it was sunny and beautiful,” Jasmine says. That glorious Vancouver summer weather held throughout the day, showcasing the city at its best to the couple’s guests, who had flown up to 15 hours to attend. “Everything ended up perfectly,” Jasmine says. “It just felt like an awesome party. It’s just one of the amazing things that’s happened in our relationship.”

hen Courtney Bennett and Blair Lavallie started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to celebrate with their 220 guests for more than just one day. But a tropical destination was not the best fit for this outdoorsy Prince George couple who met playing baseball in the snow. Instead, they hosted a lakeside camping weekend at Vivian Lake Resort in Northern B.C., saying their I do’s on August 20, 2016, the last sunny day of the season. “We wanted our guests to get to know each other over the course of the weekend,” Courtney says. “I still like running into people and hearing the stories of who they met at the wedding.” With Mother Nature providing much of the décor, Courtney, her six bridesmaids and her “very hands-on” mom tackled the florals and decorating themselves – a project that while fun, was a little more work than anticipated. “On the day we were setting up, we ran out of extension cords and I had a moment,” Courtney admits. “But I was so pleased with how it all came together. And the moment I saw Blair, it all melted away and it was the funnest moment of my life.”

Courtney enjoys a morning coffee while getting ready for her wedding day with the help of makeup artist Nicole Kenney.

A

s an interior designer, I have always been drawn to wedding design. Styling a wedding gives you the ultimate opportunity to create a lasting feeling that resonates with your guests, long after your wedding day is over.

1

As a rule, I generally try to keep away from trends, as they come and go so quickly, but when Pantone announced the colour of the year for 2017 as a fresh and zesty green, I knew it was going to explode across the design scene. And we are already seeing the earthy shade everywhere –something I predict will continue. The natural hue is about going back to our roots and featuring materials that occur naturally around us. For a wedding, think full bushels of leaves, branches and palms taking centre stage – moving beyond being simple accents. Think a lot of greenery with a minimalist vibe. Or, another concept is lush foliage paired with natural wood accents like long, rustic farm tables, benches and vintage chairs. Wood stumps and rustic wood signage. Instead of your typical flower crown, we are seeing simple green foliage as a hair accent lending to a more polished laid-back vibe. A serene, not too fussy, put together scene that will definitely lend itself to a relaxing and memorable day.

DO'S AND DON'TS

Notes on etiquette Words: Christina Myers

W

edding etiquette has a lot in common with bridal gowns: the basic shapes are the same, but an awful lot has changed in the last century. Many long-held traditions have simply disappeared almost entirely: it’s a rare ceremony in which you’ll be asked to sit on the bride or groom’s side when you enter the church, for example. But just as a fine lace or intricate hand-beading is as beautiful today as it was for our greatgrandmother’s generation, some things stand the test of time. When it comes to being a gracious bride, there’s a few simple rules that are as valuable today as they have ever been:

DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL A gift is just that – a gift, given in generosity. Wedding gifts are not an obligation, nor a “trade” for an invitation. Listing registry information on the wedding invitation is still – or should be – a nono. Allow bridesmaids and family to spread the word (or, easier still, set up a wedding website which includes all manner of important information from location to, yes, registries.) More importantly: do not ask for cash. Sure, it’s lovely to receive – but it’s not your job to tell others what to gift you.

MAKE IT PERSONAL For decades, the receiving line was a part of nearly every wedding – most often held right on the steps of the church as guests left. These days, as ceremony venues and wedding day schedules evolve, the receiving line is less and less common. But the idea behind the receiving line is as important now as ever: greet each guest and thank them for their presence. Carve out a time in the schedule to circle the reception, table by table, or devise some other way to ensure you have the time in your busy day to visit with each person.

BE A GOOD HOST - TO EVERYONE Once upon a time, it was common practise to invite all manner of folks to the dinner reception, from the baker to the wedding organizer and the organist who had played in the church. That’s fallen by the wayside, but do be sure to take care of those who are on hand – the DJ, live musicians and the photographer should be invited to eat, and take time to offer a word of thanks to servers, the chef, kitchen staff and bartenders.
