JOI JOIN N IIN N THE TH E This year’s Lights at Lafarge Winter Lights Display is bigger and brighter than ever before, with hundreds of thousands of sparkling lights illuminating the landscape
five things
Here are to know about Coquitlam’s much-loved lights display.
1. 2.
It’s the biggest free winter lights display in the Lower Mainland, with hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights wrapping their way around Lafarge Lake. Many of the lights have been made by Coquitlam community members as well as staff, often using recycled materials such as pop bottles and milk jugs. Members of the public can drop in for light-making workshops organized by Coquitlam’s Park Spark team.
Pick Up Your F REE Guide! For a full listing of winter programs, lessons and events, pick up Coquitlam’s free Winter/Spring 2018 Program Guide at any Coquitlam facility or view it online at coquitlam.ca/programguide
See schedule information at coquitlam.ca/parkspark
3. 4. 5.
This year’s Jingle Bells Night on Friday, Dec. 22, aims to break our previous record of 500 singing voices. Choirs will be stationed around the 1.2-km trail from 7 – 8 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., stop where you are and join in a community sing-a-long of Jingle Bells. In need of a snack or hot drink to fuel your walk? New this year: A concession stand will be stationed near Town Centre Park Plaza from Wednesdays to Sundays, 4:30 – 9 p.m. Other options closer to Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station include Caffé Divano (3003 Burlington Dr.) and Papparoti (1196 Pinetree Way). The lights will be switched on for the first time at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25 and continue until Jan. 21, 2018. They will turn on each night at dusk and power off at 11 p.m., with the exception of New Year’s Eve, when they will stay on until after midnight.
The lights display is located just steps from Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station. Free parking is available in Lot D off Trevor Wingrove Way. For further details, visit coquitlam.ca/parkspark

RUNNING
Running for Life
R
unning is something our bodies were made to do. It is a baseline for all other sports and can be done anywhere, anytime, with no special equipment, alone or with a partner(s). Running together with someone forms strong bonds, friendships that last a lifetime. It creates space for your head and daily stresses to free themselves of the constantly changing world around us. It is a time to let go of social media, emails and the constant surge of electronic information that is among us every day all day. It gives you a time to think and reflect and set goals and pay attention to what your body is telling you. It never gets easier, you just get stronger. Whether you are slow or fast the point is that you run. It does not matter. There is a running partner out there for everyone, and on those days when you need to be alone in your thoughts, your shoes will carry you all the miles needed to work out life’s problems.
Running has been an integral and extremely important part of my life. My kids see me out the door each day at 5:30 am to take care of me, so that I can be the very best version of myself to raise and take care of them. Running doesn’t define me as a mother or person, but it gives me the tools to tackle anything in life that comes my way.
Maddy and Niki at Black Tusk in Garabaldi Park.
I will be starting a few programs next year for girls and running. Ages 12 and up. I will be offering running camps in the summer, designed to teach young girls how to run and the importance of fostering relationships with both themselves and others. And following that, in September of 2018 I will be launching a girls running program throughout schools and after school, designed to teach your daughter the very basics of having a lifelong relationship with her running shoes and herself. Please email me for more information and for pre- registration sign up for both the summer camps and the girls program. Niki Jacques Runner, Mother Entrepreneur nikijacques.com

MY TRI-CITIES GIVING BACK ‘TIS THE SEASON TO
SHARE Christmas time is a busy one for all the staff and volunteers of SHARE Society and a time that they work extra hard to support those in need in our community. SHARE provides Christmas Hampers and Toys for Children, while running various fundraising initiatives such as food drives and their annual Christmas Wrap at Coquitlam Centre. It’s also a great time for you to give back and get involved. You can volunteer at our Gift Wrap, host your own food drive or toy drive, raise money, donate food and/or come out and volunteer at a food drive.
SHARE encourages you to take the spirit of giving this holiday season to help your fellow community members and SHARE by giving back this Christmas. SHARE is preparing to provide Christmas hampers to 1,800 Tri-Cities families. They expect 2,215 children and youth will receive their Christmas toys through the Christmas program. Please visit the website for more information on registering for a Christmas program or to donate. sharesociety.ca

ICE, ICE BABY A rite of passage in Canada — and a popular family activity — is the public skate. Pack up the helmets and blades (or rent at the rink), suit up in winter coats and warm gloves, and head to the local arena to go around in circles with dozens of others of all ages. And you don’t have to skate like Connor McDavid — if you use one of those little frames, hug the boards all the way around or just use them to stop, you won’t be the only one. So lace up and get skating.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN The fields and arenas of the Tri-Cities are alive with the sounds of sports throughout the fall and winter. If you’re looking for a little cheap entertainment — i.e. free —, go for a walk in your local park and take in a few minutes of minor soccer, football or field lacrosse. Inside, there’s plenty of hockey and ringette happening on ice. Forget the big bucks of professional pucksters and check out the stars of the future today.

INDOOR Dance lessons free. Belvedere Care Centre is known for having one of the best and diverse recreational programs. Staying active is the secret to a happy and healthy life! We also offer a variety of specialized care options including dementia services and programs in a caring setting. Experience the peace of mind of having physician & professional nursing services 24/7. We are a local, family run company that cares about each resident and their families.
It’s healthy to stay active and spring and summer weather make it easier to do, providing fresh air and sunshine. But when the great outdoors aren’t so great — and the weather turns to cold, rain, snow and ice — there are plenty of activities to take part in INside in the Tri-Cities. Rec centres offer gyms for exercise, pools for swimming and other activities; play places host birthday parties and warm, dry, active play time for children in a safe environment; and in bowling alleys, you can take part in a sport that is open to just about everyone. So don’t let bad weather slow you down — just head inside.
