Get Involved & Get Active! Summer is just around the corner, and with it, a number of events the whole family will enjoy. O Canada! For many Coquitlam residents, the official start of summer is Coquitlam Celebrates Canada Day at Town Centre Park. Once again, expect an exciting day of live entertainment, food, beverages, family activities, and fireworks over Lafarge Lake. Come find out why this event was named one of the top 20 festivals in Metro Vancouver by Business in Vancouver. Learn more at coquitlam.ca/canadaday. We’re also celebrating our nation’s 150th birthday this year with a series of special Canada 150 activities you won’t want to miss. Check out coquitlam.ca/canada150 for details.

Celebrating the arts Have you seen a performance yet at the stunning new Town Centre Park Plaza? You’ll have plenty of opportunities this summer, including our free Friday evening summer concert series on July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 1 (info at coquitlam.ca/summerconcerts). The August concert in the series will set the stage for the return of the Kaleidoscope Arts Festival—introduced in 2016 as one of our signature Coquitlam 125 events—on Aug. 12. Experience a magical day of music, dancers and visual artists, along with food, an artisans fair and children’s activities. Stay into the evening and check out this year’s headliner, Bif Naked, on the plaza stage. Details at coquitlam.ca/kaleidoscope. Coquitlam in Bloom Building on our 2016 national Communities in Bloom win, we’re kicking off another year of Coquitlam in Bloom as we compete at the international level of this community beautification and pride competition. This year’s activities will have a special focus on Canada 150. Find out how you can get involved at coquitlam.ca/cib. If you happen to be in Gatineau, Que. this summer, make sure to check out MosaiCanada 150/Gatineau 2017, the largest horticultural event in Canada featuring colourful towering ecosculptures. Coquitlam is representing B.C. with a 23-foot-tall replica of Bill Reid’s bronze killer whale statue, Chief of the Undersea World. That’s just a taste of what’s happening this summer. Read through the guide for more ideas about how to spend your summer!

Coquitlam Competes in the 2017 Communities in Bloom International Competition! Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering community pride, environmental responsibility and beautification. It uses friendly competition between communities to bring together local businesses, service clubs, residents and civic government to focus on enhancing their community. Judges visit the City over a two-day period in the summer to assess the performance of four sectors: municipal, business and institutions, residential, and community involvement. Each of these sectors is judged on their performance in six categories: • Tidiness • Environmental Action

New to skating?

Review these FAQs before you start.

WHAT LEVEL DO I REGISTER FOR? We recommend all new participants begin in the introductory levels. If you have skating experience, we can do our best to fit you into the right level in one of two ways: 1. Skating Evaluation: Come during public skating and our staff will determine your level. 2. Show Past Progress Card: Show your past card and we will find the closest fit in our skating program.

WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR? » Waterproof pants, such as snow pants or rain pants. » A warm jacket or sweatshirt. » Gloves or mittens, waterproof is best. » CSA approved helmet (no bike helmets), face cage recommended for kids 7 & under. » Knee and elbow pads, worn under clothing, are optional. Wearing pads over clothes can make it slippery when trying to stand. » Skates, should be fitting properly and in good repair. Skate and helmet rentals are available at the Skate Shop.

CAN I RENT EQUIPMENT? Yes! Rentals are paid for at the front desk and redeemed at the skate shop. Arrive early as there can often be a line at the front desk. Helmets now included with all registered skate lessons. RENTAL RATES

Good Neighbours Make Great Neighbourhoods! It only takes a little effort to be a good neighbour. ♦ Keep your property looking nice by mowing the lawn, maintaining the garden and repairing fencing. ♦ Be mindful of noise including music and barking dogs. ♦ Do not litter in our parks and outdoor spaces—this includes cigarette butts. ♦ Help mobility-challenged neighbours with tasks like mowing their lawn, setting out their garbage carts, or shoveling their walkway when it snows. ♦ Do not throw household trash into park or street garbage cans. ♦ Ensure your dog has a licence and only let it play free in an off-leash area. Don’t forget to pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste.

Make sure your voice is heard on matters you care about!
