In addition to a variety of local groups whose members sing, dance, play softball or bridge, the cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody offer recreation facilities geared for seniors — and we urge you to check out the one most convenient for you:

CENTRAL COQUITLAM
Wilson Centre, an accessible one-level facility attached to the PoCo rec complex, is an activity and recreational hub for those aged 50 years or older. There are a number of drop-in activities, from snooker, table tennis, darts and carpet bowling to bingo and a variety of card games. Wilson also offers registered programs, including those to help you boost your computer and online skills, plus accessible programs to meet the varying needs of the community, such as monitoring blood pressure and health and wellness talks. Home Renovation Tax Credit for Seniors This is a refundable personal income tax credit to assist with the cost of permanent home modifications that improve accessiblity or help a senor be more functional or mobile at home.
PROVINCIAL HEALTH SERVICES
The maximum credit is $1,000 annually. The credit can be claimed by seniors, whether they own their home or rent, and by individuals who share a home with a senior relative. Low Income Grant Supplement for Seniors This supplement allows low income seniors to supplement their home owner grant if its been reduced or eliminated due to high assessed value of their principal residence. Canadian Cancer Society 1-888-939-3333 www.cancer.ca Provides limited, short-term financial assistance towards certain cancer symptom management medications as well as travel and accommodation to cancer-related medical appointments, through a partnership with the BC Cancer Agency.
HealthLink BC 811 www.healthlinkbc.ca A trained health service representative will answer 8-1-1 telephone calls, and where appropriate, calls will be transferred to a registered nurse, pharmacist or dietitian for further information and advice. New residents to the province are eligible for coverage after a waiting period of the remainder of the month of arrival plus two full months.
MSP pays for required medical serivces including medically necessary services provided by physicians, dental and oral surgery performed in a hospital, eye examinations if medically required and some orthodontic services. MSP may also pay for diagnostic services including x-rays. For people who receive Premium Assistance, MSP also pays the cost of a combined annual limit of 10 visits for chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy, physical therapy, acupuncture and nonsurgical podiatry when performed by a practitioner enrolled with MSP. (MSP pays $23 for each visit, patient is responsible for any charge over and above.) Among the services not covered by MSP are dental services (other than dental surgery performed in a hospital), eyeglasses, hearing aids and other equipment or appliances, services of counsellors or psychologists, medical examinations, certificates or tests required for things like driving, life insurance. If your income is low and you are a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and have lived in Canada for the last 12 months you may be eligible to receive premium assistance. If you feel you need services such as home support or access to an adult day program, or you wish to be considered for assisted living or residential care, a

SHARE Family and Community Services offers the following programs to Tri-Cities seniors. Better at Home Program (for people 65+)

Offers light housekeeping, transportation to medical appointments, minor home repair, food support, grocery shopping and friendly visiting to help seniors continue to live at home and remain independent ■ Light housekeeping, transportation and home repair have fees that are reduced based on household income.
Welcoming Seniors Spaces (for people 75+)
Organizes regular group meetings where seniors can provide and/or access support, and connect with other community members. ■ Recruits and trains outreach volunteers who will connect with seniors and help them get the needed service/s.
Supports isolated seniors by providing transportation service to get them to community centres and other locations where they can access resources and increase their community connections. The service is provided by volunteers.
Seniors Café / Seniors Food Bank Day ■

Seniors gather at the Clarke St. Family Resource Centre to pick up their food hamper, access information and other needed support, and connect with other community members. Seniors meet bi-weekly on Friday 9:30 – 11:30 at 2615 Clarke St., Port Moody
Seniors Support Group (for people 60+) ■
Offers a discussion group for seniors who want to gain and/or give supportThe group runs two or three cycles per year.

The policy, which accommodates, at no extra cost, people meeting certain requirements who need an extra seat due to a disability pertains only to domestic flights on WestJet and Air Canada. Trains - VIA RAIL VIA Rail offers free travel to one escort accompanying a person with vision loss. The escort or attendant travels free in the same class of service. Passengers wishing to travel with an escort must be eligible for a CNIB ID Card and have the card in hand when purchasing a train ticket. Health problems tend to manifest themselves, or become more prevalent as drivers age which is why, beginning at age 80 and every two years thereafter, drivers must be assessed by their doctor and submit a medical report to RoadSafetyBC. Further, cognitive impairment with respect to driving represents a growing public safety issue as BC’s population ages. As a result it is imperative that drivers who show signs of cognitive decline are assessed to ensure that they are fit to drive. for further information call 1-855-387-7747 HandyCard 604-953-3680 Do you have a permanent physical, sensory or cognitive disability and require assistance to use conventional public transit? HandyCard fare discounts and TaxiSaver coupons can help keep you connected. If you live within the TransLink service area, HandyCard allows travel at Concession fare prices on the bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express, and if someone needs to travel with you to provide assistance, can travel with you for free. HandyCard is for travel on conventional transit and can’t be used on HandyDART. If your trip includes HandyDART, you’ll pay regular adult fare rates. Concession fares are eligible for HandyCard holders, seniors 65 years and older with photo identification proving age, HandyCard customers can now use an orange Concession Compass Card to pay for travel on bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express. Instead of paying with paper monthly FareCards and FareSavers, you can now load passes and money onto your Concession Compass Card. Please note: if you already have a Compass Card through another program (such as BC Bus Pass, U-Pass BC, or CNIB), please feel free to travel with your existing program card. Remember to carry your HandyCard at all times when travelling with an attendant.

HandyDART’s service provider (MVT Canadian Bus Inc.) provides a central customer service team that is available 18 hours a day and operates over 300 buses.
