Several refugee families wait at Burquitlam Park, near the apartment at 550 Cottonwood Ave. in Coquitlam that was struck by fire Thursday morning. Those families and other residents of the complex were forced from their homes by the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a plumber’s torch. The fire was one of three going on at the same time yesterday in Coquitlam.

Refugee families homeless after Coq. apartment fire Red Cross will get involved to help find housing for families displaced by Thursday blaze

GaRy MCKenna The Tri-CiTy News

Eighty-six people — including several refugee families — are without a home after fire tore through their Cottonwood Avenue apartment building in Coquitlam

yesterday (Thursday). Crews were on scene at the 48-unit complex shortly before noon to battle a blaze that was initially concentrated on the top floor, toward the back of the building. But within two hours, the flames had spread and it is now believed that all suites will

likely not be habitable. “It is really involved,” said Coquitlam Fire Chief Wade Pierlot at around 12:30 p.m. Meanwhile, firefighters were also busy with another structure fire on Wickham Drive.

50 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER

The Tri-Cities are filled with people who help charities and community causes. But not all of them would be willing to take on the physical challenges the three people profiled on this page have...

50 miles, 1 day, 1 couple – for animals Sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News

About two months ago, Nicholas Khoo and Serene Lee decided it was time for a new challenge, and a race with which to test themselves. But for the two longtime runners and former members of the Singapore Armed Forces — Khoo was a member of the commando special forces unit while Lee was an officer in the cadet school — not just any race would do. With less than three months to train, the Coquitlam couple signed up for the Squamish 50 on Aug. 20. The “50” refers to miles, meaning they’ll be running 80.5 km in the mountainous Squamish terrain, where there are more than 11,000 feet of climbing and descending. The race’s website describes it as “an exceptionally difficult course made tougher still by the technical nature of a majority of the terrain. Throw in the fact that the back half runs much more difficult than the front half and you have yourself a nice little day of suffering.” If any of that makes you squeeze your eyes shut in abject horror, know that Lee, 42, and Khoo, 47, are genuinely thrilled about the prospect even though they freely admit that, yes, it is a little bit crazy. “We’re excited about it, actually,” Lee said.

LEFT: SUBMITTED PHOTO; RIGHT: SARAH PAYNE/THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Nicholas Khoo and Serene Lee own a dog-grooming business but they’ve been spending a lot of time the last few months training for the Squamish 50 — that’s 50 miles — running race on Aug. 20.

“It’s going to be brutal,” said Khoo, grinning from ear to ear. “We’ve never had a chance to run the entire course, so some parts will be a mystery. We’re going in blind.” Blind, perhaps, but not illprepared. For instance, if you were out hiking last Sunday, you might have seen Khoo and Lee run past you on the Dilly Dally Loop trail. Yes, they ran the 25-km

course with its 3,800 ft. of elevation gain. It took them 10 hours and left them with the scratches and bruises to prove it. They train six days a week. Sunday and Monday, when their dog grooming business is closed (more on that later), they do a 35- to 40-km run, followed by 20 km the following day. Another day is stairs — they use a friend’s 25-storey highrise and do it five times (eventually work-

ing up to 10) — and the fourth is hills. Speed work and strength training make up the rest, with only one day left for stretching. “It teaches your body to recognize fatigue and deal with the discomfort, both mentally and physically,” Khoo said. It’s a far cry from when they first moved to Canada six years ago, when they found the air too “dry” for running. They gave it up for about four years until Lee decided to give 5 km a shot — he could barely do three and realized “something had to change.” So they laced up the runners again and started hitting the pavement. They joined a run-

ning club in Richmond and, in the past two years, have done three marathons and three halfmarathons. The Squamish 50, however, will be their first trail race and their first ultra-marathon. “Most people say the course is not suitable for a first-timer,” Khoo said, but they’re confident that their coach, who is preparing for the Canadian Death Race in Alberta, and Lee’s extensive research on how to prepare and what to eat, will put them in a good position for the Squamish 50, which they hope to complete in 15 hours. If they do, all the sacrifices of the preceding three months,

when the weeks were made up of work and training and little else (except for their move to Coquitlam three weeks ago), will have been worth it. But they’re not just doing the Squamish 50 for the “fun” of it. The couple, who own Suds ’n’ Scissors dog grooming in Coquitlam, hope to raise $3,000 for a cause close to their hearts: Senior Animals In Need Today Society (SAINTS) Rescue. “Every animal deserves a good home and proper care regardless if they are sick or old,” Khoo and Lee said. “SAINTS Rescue has provided a loving sanctuary for all these abandoned animals.” What’s next after an ultra trail race? Khoo is on a quest to qualify for the Boston Marathon (he’ll have to run a marathon in three hours, 25 minutes to do that), and they’re thinking about tackling the Squamish 50/50 next year — that would mean running the 50-mile course on a Saturday, followed by a 50-km course the next day. “We do almost everything together,” Lee said. “But we’re lucky, we share the same interests. He’s my soul- and solemate.” • For more information, visit facebook.com/TheSoleMates; to donate, visit www.gofundme. com and search for SAINTS Rescue (Animals Rescue Fund). spayne@tricitynews.com @spayneTC

50th birthday, 50 Grouse Grinds – for youth Gary McKenna

The Tri-CiTy News

Most people ring in their 50th birthdays with cake and confetti. Not Paul McDonald. Instead of streamers and a backyard barbecue, he is urging his friends and family to donate money to Access Youth Outreach Services and join him this summer in his effort to hike the Grouse Grind 50 times. “It was one of my goals this year,” the Coquitlam resident told The Tri-City News shortly after completing his 32nd trip up the North Shore mountain. “I thought I would combine it with raising money. It gives me the motivation to do it and is great exposure for the organization.” As of July 28, McDonald, who does the hike three times a week, had tackled the Grind

34 times this year for a total of 96,620 steps. And with $12,325 in donations already collected, he was quickly closing in on his fundraising goal of $20,000. So far, his best time has been 56 minutes — and he once did the trek four times in one day. “The first three were no problem,” he said. The fourth was shaping up to be a different story but, thanks to a pep talk from Vancouver Canuck Daniel Sedin, who happened to be on the Grouse Gondola heading down after McDonald’s third trip, he said he was able to tackle the fourth hike with renewed enthusiasm. “The fourth one felt like it took three hours but it only took an hour, 21 minutes.” McDonald hasn’t been alone on his hikes. He was recently joined by 15 people from the Tri-

City Chamber of Commerce and friends, family and community members routinely join him for his climbs up the mountain. “It has been amazing,” he said. “There were three people the other day that did it for the first time. The looks on people’s face when they do it is pretty priceless.” McDonald said he has always wanted to help young people. A few years ago, he went back to school to get a bachelor of science and a teaching certificate with the intention of finding work in the public school system. But the teachers’ strike at the time had him looking at other ways he could have an impact on young people. “I realized I could do this with my business,” he said. With his hauling company Ethical Waste Services, he

began donating 50% of his profits to ACCESS Youth Outreach Services, a not-for-profit that supports youth in the Tri-Cities and Langley. “I was looking for something that was grassroots,” he said, “something that had no government funding… I wanted to help locally.” So when it came time to do his 50 Grinds, he said it was natural for him to once again raise money for Access Youth. His charitable work is all the motivation he says he needs to stay on track with his 50-Grinds goal and he said he is scheduled to complete the effort with one last hike on Aug. 14. • Those who wish to donate money can go to McDonald’s website at www.50grinds.com.

Shaughnessy cycle lane is to be added Connections are key, says city’s transpo manager Gary McKenna

The Tri-CiTy News

A new bike lane in Coquitlam will connect two major Tri-City cycling routes. Dan Mooney, the city’s manager of transportation, said the addition of a separated lane along Shaughnessy Street will link David Avenue with the Traboulay PoCo Trail and add greater mobility for twowheeled travellers. “We are starting to make connections between cycling facilities,” Mooney told The TriCity News. “That is really going to be provide an opportunity — you really need a network.” Bike stencils will be painted on the street along the route and curb bulges will be added at several points, he added, noting there will also be signage for motorists and pedestrians alerting them to the cycling lane. “The more traffic, the more separation you need,” he said. “With faster traffic on Shaughnessy, you need more

Evergreen Line construction crews will begin the process of covering up the north tunnel portal entrance near Barnet Highway this week. According to a construction bulletin, the roof work will be compete by the middle of August, when workers will begin restoring the View Street connection and the street could be re-opened this fall. Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, with work consisting of building the roof and backfilling operations. Excavators and backhoes will be working in the area and residents should expect noise related to the construction activities. Intermittent daytime lane closures southbound on Barnet may also be required as well as traffic stoppages along View Street. Traffic control personnel will be on site and drivers are urged to use caution when driving through the area. COQUITLAM APARTMENT FIRE

Reception centre set up for victims continued from front page

Help from neighbouring fire departments, including from Port Coquitlam and Burnaby, was called in through the department’s mutual aid agreements. The Cottonwood blaze tied

up the most resources, however, as crews fought to contain the flames, which were believed to have been ignited by a plumber, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart told The TriCity News on site. He said there were several immigrants living in the build-

ing who would now need alternative accommodations. “They came here for a better life,” Stewart said. “Now, they don’t have a home.” TransLink provided two Coast Mountain Bus Company buses to use as a temporary indoor gathering area for resi-

dents affected by the fire. Emergency Social Services were co-ordinating hotel accommodations for the first 72 hours, after which agencies such as the Red Cross are contacted to help arrange support. In a press release, the

city said all victims of the Cottonwood Avenue fire should report to a reception centre at Dogwood Pavilion (1655 Winslow Ave.. at the corner of Winslow and Poirier Street). An emergency information line has also been set up at 604-927-4357.

The city also warned neighbours to keep their windows and doors closed for several hours to avoid smoke issues, particularly for those with respiratory problems. gmckenna@tricitynews.com @gmckennaTC – with files from Janis Warren

An accident during plumbing work at an apartment building at 550 Cottonwood Ave. in the Burquitlam area caused a fire that forced the complex to be evacuated Thursday morning. A number of families were displaced and the city of Coquitlam has set up a reception centre for them at Dogwood Pavilion.

Small loss with pass B.C. Day Facility Hours change but council OKs the discount August 1, 2016 Also: Free balls, skip ropes, more at Rocky Point Sarah Payne

The Tri-CiTy News

Students of any age will be able to get a Port Moody fitness pass at the discounted rate after council agreed to eliminate the age requirement for student passes. The decision comes after a nearly one-year trial period, during which the discounted passes were available to anyone with a valid student card showing they’re attending a post-secondary institution. Before July 2015, the passes were available to students until the age of 25. The Parks and Recreation Commission had suggested the one-year trial period, saying it could boost the number of students using the fitness centre and, if it encouraged new users to buy a pass, it would lead to higher revenue. The commission also recognized many people now stay

in school past the age of 25 or return to school later in life. The 10-month trial period showed 93 student passes were sold from late July 2015 to May 2016. There was a net loss in revenue of about $2,700 when compared with 93 passes sold at the regular adult rate but a staff report noted some of those 93 users were likely new clients.

PLAY BOX

Families using Rocky Point Park could be taking advantage of a new play box stocked with toys and sports equipment by the end of the summer. The Tri-Cities Healthy Living Working Group, a consortium of local governments, School District 43 and Fraser Health, proposed the box as a way of increasing kids’ physical activity levels and combatting rising obesity rates in children. A similar box is in Abbotsford and includes basketballs, soccer balls, skipping ropes, sidewalk chalk, frisbees, hula hoops and more. Families wishing to use the locked box will register through the YMCA for an access code. PoMo will pay the $1,500

cost of the concrete pad and Tri-Cities Healthy Living supplies the rest, with costs paid for by sponsorship advertising on the box.

SPENDING MONEY

Port Moody will use revenue from Evergreen Line construction work to fund a pair of local improvement projects. Evergreen crews have been using the former landfill site on Barnet Highway as a turnaround area for trucks hauling materials to and from the west tunnel portal. The revenue from leasing the land to EGRT at various points since January 2015 and through to December 2016 is expected to be about $86,000. Staff suggested that some of those funds be used for two projects to be co-ordinated with Evergreen construction: replacing a section of water main on Short Street between two sections EGRT will be realigning ($35,000); and patching and repairing Spring Street, between Hugh and William streets, that have deteriorated ($10,000). spayne@tricitynews.com @spayneTC

Remove road from Bert Flinn: motion Councillor says a rally showed people don’t want road through park SaRah Payne

The Tri-CiTy News

Bert Flinn Park will be on Port Moody council’s agenda when it meets again after the August break. At the end of Tuesday’s council meeting, Coun. Rob Vagramov issued a lengthy notice of motion that seeks to remove the David Avenue connector right-of-way and incorporate those 22 acres into Bert Flinn Park, and to have staff report back on enhanced parking at the David Avenue and April Road entrances to the park. The David Avenue connector is a Port Moody requirement before any development can occur on the Ioco lands. The developer Brilliant Circle Group is proposing to build on a 232-acre portion of the property. But Vagramov told The Tri-City News yesterday that his motion has nothing to do with any potential develop-

COUN. ROB VAGRAMOV ment and waiting for an Ioco proposal before deciding on whether the road should be built is a “false choice.” In a preamble to the motion, Vagramov said his job has been “difficult for a number of reasons” but that the decisions council makes are based on principle. “We don’t have public input on most of our decisions, public consultation is only for the bigger things,” he said at the meeting. “It’s really rare to have an issue come up that is so obviously supported by the community that it’s basically important or impossible to ignore.” Vagramov said Thursday he wouldn’t be opposed to public consultation but that the num-

ber of people who signed the Save Bert Flinn Park petition and attended the rally in June was “the community saying loud and clear they don’t want this road.” “Of course, not everyone is going to be participating, but city council has made decisions with less people involved,” he added. “I see it as a clear mandate from the community.” The David Avenue connector was first identified in the 1984 official community plan, but Vagramov said its original purpose — serving Neighbourhoods 3 and 4 — has been abandoned, and the road is no longer needed. Bert Flinn Park was created after a referendum in 1999, which preserved the swath of north shore land as a natural area, densifying the town centre instead. Asked what the alternative route should be if the Ioco lands are developed, Vagramov said those decisions would be made once the city receives a formal proposal from the developers. The motion will be discussed at council’s Sept. 13 meeting. spayne@tricitynews.com @spayneTC

OUR OPINION

About the 15%

I

t has taken a few years but the bC Liberals have turned 180 degrees on the issue of foreign buyers influencing the local housing market. Starting next week, any foreign citizen or company wanting to buy a home here will pay an extra 15% tax on the property’s value. for years, the premier insisted there was no link and no need to even collect any data on foreign purchasers. She later conceded foreign cash probably was a factor but that she also wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize any of the equity homeowners had “painstakingly” acquired. finally, she opted to start collecting data on foreign purchases, but still chose to blame the affordability crisis on municipalities for failing to approve more condo projects. So why the sudden change of tune when? We suspect their pre-election polling was telling them voters would rather see them doing something, as opposed to nothing. The main worry now, of course, is that this is a case of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. or more specifically, the horse has decided to move its family to the fraser valley, vancouver Island or elsewhere in the country in search of more habitable pastures.

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION? VoTe aT tricitynews.com/opinion/poll

this week’s question:

Do you believe the new 15% tax on homes bought by foreign buyers will help reducing housing prices?

ake a jacket, it could get cold and rain later tonight. Nah, I won’t need one. It’s sunny out right now. She comes home freezing and wet. Wear hiking boots if you’re going up there. That trail is going to be really muddy and slippery. I don’t like hiking boots. I like wearing my Nike airs. Returns after the hike in soggy, filthy Nike airs, and equally dirty clothing from falling multiple times on the slippery trail. Your car has a sketchy gas gauge. Never let the tank go down past halfway. It’s got plenty of gas. I just filled it up last week. Phone call: The car won’t start. do you suppose it’s out of gas? It’s reassuring to know that after almost 19 years of being a dad, I’m still full of useful information and suggestions. Not that my daughter listens to them because she is, after all, just about to become a full-fledged adult with all the perks this fall, and adult women don’t need helpful hints from old geezer fathers. I had a extended panic attack about that very scenario when she graduated last year.

TC

I was about to become obsolete. antiquated. out of touch. uninformed. My beautiful bird was about to leave the nest, and only return for family visits and a brief stop at dad’s Mobile aTM service. It wasn’t a pleasant sensation. all those years of labouring over spaghetti bridges, creative writing essays, and floor-sized three-dimensional maps of the Nile valley, complete with plastic hippos, were to be no longer. She was all grown up. Self-sufficient. all-knowing, allseeing. Just like dad. My job was done. It was a mighty mental struggle. and then she went off to her first year of ubC, living in residence. Happily, I was needed to transport the meagre trappings of life that could fit into her dorm, or mouse-box, as I dubbed it. Then came the first essay, and dad the editor was called into service. and then there was the second essay and third and more — an analysis of patriarchy and colonialism; the moral responsibility of non-interference by nation states; and other critical thinking dissertations on matters social, political and global.

I’m not an expert in any of those subjects, but I’m familiar with them, they’re extremely interesting, and I can edit the heck out of problematic punctuation. I’m lucky. She could be studying genetic coding. I wouldn’t know an amino acid sequence unless it spilled on my lap. actually, that wouldn’t be a crisis, either. because when there really is a relatively minor young adult crisis such as rampant exam anxiety, a derailing relationship or a professor carved of ice, most of the time, all a dad has to do is listen. I learned a lot about listening this past year. apparently, I’m not too bad at it. I think I’m far better at dispensing sage advice. In fact, I’m full of it. at least she acknowledges the last bit. She often tells me so. Here’s my reassurance to dads who are struggling with the concept of switching up from leading a wideeyed child to unleashing a freshly minted young adult into the world: You’re only obsolete if you’ve made yourself that way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go check the oil in my grown-up daughter’s car before the engine seizes.

TRANS CANADA TRAIL

TRANS MOUNTAIN PIPELINE

The Editor, Canada Day celebrations took place almost a month ago and next year will be our nation’s 150th birthday. No doubt, plans are now being formulated to make it a whopper. Let’s hope that high on the priority list will be the improving to the Trans Canada Trail. The nucleus of the trail through B.C. is splendid. In most instances, local governments have maintained it without having any standards to strive for. But since 1992, when The Great Trail idea began, there are so many politicians, professionals, philanthropists, celebrities and volunteers to give our thanks for the Trans Canada Trail that we have today. Canada’s 150th birthday could well be called the second beginning of the trail. The 24,000-km inspirational, nation-connecting trail will require some governing structure and, of course, budgeting

The Editor, Why are the Tri-Cities left out of the ministerial hearings on Kinder Morgan? Recently, a new ministerial panel on the Trans Mountain pipeline has been announced, with hearing dates from July to August along the pipeline route, giving those who want to have a say very little time to plan and prepare. The federal panel is tasked with further consulting with the public on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline to assess social licence and will be making half a dozen stops in the Lower Mainland. But the Tri-Cities have been left out. The citizens of the Tri-Cities have some very specific concerns and specialized information about the impact of the project on our area. Whether you are for or against the pipeline, you deserve to have your voice heard and potentially impact the decision of whether this project will go ahead.

Let’s take care of our Tri-Cities should be trail for Canada’s 150th in on pipeline talks FILE PHOTO

For Canada’s 150th birthday next year, there should be improvements to the Trans Canada Trail, says the letter writer. arrangement. The legislation required is up to someone to establish a form of governance that would give the trail a spine to work with what is already established. It would probably set some primary standards for physical trail itself, or perhaps specify what is acceptable, or what the preferable choices would be. But of prime importance — and what makes this leg-

islation necessary — the cost should be born by our federal and provincial governments. There are many who could become a part of the new beginning and visualize the Trans Canada Trail as almost important as the TransCanada Highway, or to inspire our nation-building efforts. Please give it some thought. Cliff E. Van Alstyne, Port Coquitlam

Many local experts have written in to the National Energy Board (NEB) about the dangers of this pipeline to the Tri-Cities; both Port Moody and Coquitlam were interveners in the NEB process. Many concerned parties, including the government of B.C. and the official opposition, have said the NEB process is flawed and many residents were denied the opportunity to act as either interveners or commenters, or even attend a hearing. Residents of the Tri-Cities have been very vocal about the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Concerned Professional Engineers project a one in 10 chance a spill that could come as far as Port Moody, bringing the public health impacts of the volatile toxic compounds that make up 30% of diluted bitumen into our shared airshed. Coquitlam city staff have proposed that even without a spill, the increased capital and operating costs of the

expanded pipeline will cost the city about $255,000 a year after taxes from the company are considered. Further, the company still plans to use Colony Farm Park as a staging area of pipeline construction before placing a tunnel under the Fraser River, which could disturb the wildlife and ecosystems there, as well as having long-term impacts. As well, in the original hearings, no one has allowed to talk about climate change, which is a big concern for many TriCities residents. Though dates have been set for hearing, residents of the North Shore, who were also left out, have successfully lobbied to have a hearing in their area, with support from their MP, so there is a precedent for adding dates. With public interest, there is a chance we can have a hearing as well, giving us the chance to express our opinions, for or against. Amy Lubik, Port Moody

A daycare in a former Cdn. Tire? PoCo isn’t too keen

JAnis WArren The Tri-CiTy News

A bid to turn the former Canadian Tire in downtown Port Coquitlam into a childcare centre will go before city council in September. But the city’s smart growth committee has already rejected the application to convert the huge space to a daycare for up to 136 kids. At its meeting Wednesday, the committee unanimously refused to recommend the proposal, citing the appropriateness and size of the use. “It really does come down to the location,” the committee chair, Coun. Brad West, told The Tri-City News on Thursday. “It would be a huge childcare centre and far removed from any residential area… This is very out of the way and in a fairly busy commercial core.” According to city documents, the 11,158-sq. ft. commercial unit would be renovated to allow for 10 classrooms, six napping rooms, an office and kitchen. As well, nine parking spaces in front of the building would be replaced with a fenced outdoor play area. Meanwhile, also on Wednesday, the committee approved in principle a move to rezone one of the last agricultural lots in the Dominion Triangle. West said his committee reviewed the bid from Teralink Investment Group Inc., which wants a four-lot subdivision on a large, vacant lot between Nicola and Dominion avenues for light industry. West said more light industry in the triangle “is a positive thing because it will bring more employment into the city.” Other PoCo news:

BRAD WEST Improvement Association, spokespersons Bruce Richardson and Mike Roberts told city council on Monday. Sponsored by PoCo’s MetroFord Motors, the exhibit will feature about 400 collector vehicles — from the 1920s to ’80s — on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The night before, Tri-City residents will be able to see the vehicles in motion as they parade through the city during a classic car cruise. Meanwhile, PoCo city council on Monday granted the Cat and Fiddle Pub a special event business licence for its own car show on Sept. 11. The 28th annual event will include about 60 cars on the Cat’s Brown Street property as well as a beer garden and kids’ activities, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

PRICE DROP

A residential lot being sold by the city of Port Coquitlam is back on the market — at $200,000 less. Last month, the municipality had asked $799,000 for the 13,713-sq. ft. property at 1363 Elinor Cres., in the Mary Hill neighbourhood. But Braden Hutchins, PoCo’s corporate and lands manager, told The Tri-City News there were no offers and now the city land is up for grabs at $599,000. A condition of the sale is that the home be removed. The city purchased the property in April for $890,000 with the intent to widen the northern road by 2.5 m for future utility projects. jwarren@tricitynews.com @jwarrenTC

THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Welcome to the long weekend, full as it is with great live music, dance and beer — and lots of it. Be sure to have fun and plan a safe ride home.

Friday, July 29

VILLAGE VIBE

EXPO 79/16

PoCo’s performing arts series at Leigh Square features an eclectic mix of musical styles for the 2 to 4 p.m. show. Veteran performer Allie McDonald draws on her prairie and Newfoundland background for a style that combines her love for folk, acoustic and indie pop styles. Also on stage will be Ranj Sing, blending a masala of Indian melodies and rhythms with Western folk in a uniquely Canadian “Indo-folk” genre.

Travel back in time to 1979 and the opening of Coquitlam Centre mall — do you remember the huge bronze sculpture called Fraydal that was commissioned for the mall’s grand opening? It’s back in Coquitlam, on loan from her Bowen Island owner, for an exhibit at the Evergreen Cultural Centre as part of Coquitlam’s 125th celebrations. Evergreen curator Gregory Elgstrand chose the 79/16 theme to represent 1979, the year Coquitlam’s centre shifted from Maillardville to Town Centre with the mall’s opening, and the current year. Expo 79/16 is at Evergreen until Aug. 21; check it out today when the gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m.

Sunday, July 31 SUMMER SUNDAYS

What state is your soul in? Get some healing of the musical variety at the Summer Sundays concert in Rocky Point Park from 2 to 4 p.m., when Billy Dixon’s Soul Train Express gets fired up on stage. Visit www.summersundays.ca for more info.

Saturday, July 30 HOP TO IT

Beer lovers, rejoice! This weekend offers up a beer garden mecca in the Coquitlam Kinsmen International Craft Beer Festival at Town Centre Park, running today and tomorrow from 1 to 9 p.m. Do be sure to work up a thirst before you arrive so you’re ready to sample more than 60 local and international craft brews. Your $35 ticket gets you a collectible four-ounce glass and program with food coupons; tokens for beer samples ($1.50 each) are available online or at the venue. Feeling fancy? Get a VIP ticket ($65) for early access, no line-ups and VIP tents. Check out the Safe Ride Home booth for free transit tickets (while supplies last) or call Operation Red Nose at 1-877-604-NOSE (6673). Get more info at www.kinsmencraftbeerfest.com.

She is currently a Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce board director and member of the Coquitlam Foundation’s marketing and communications committee. Davidson leaves after co-founding the BIA 10 years ago, during which time she started numerous anti-graffiti and beautification programs, as well as the annual Daisy Day Festival. The Austin Heights business community was recently in the news with the successful launch of Coquitlam Munch.

The BC Lottery Corporation celebrated the “astronomical odds” of two recent wins in Coquitlam with a party at the Shoppers Drug Mart and 7-Eleven locations at David Avenue and Coast Meridian Road. In June, a $1-million Lotto Max ticket was purchased at 7-Eleven by Dennis and Janice Howlett and, just over a week later, Ian Hirsch picked up a whopping $12.8-million Lotto 6/49 ticket at Shoppers across the street. The odds of winning a Lotto 6/49 jackpot are 1 in 14 million and for the Lotto Max is 1 in 28 million, making the two winners in such close proximity a rare event. BCLC celebrated with free cake — and free tickets to Friday’s Lotto Max draw.

BC New Home Construction Investment Up

N

31.9%, Led By Condo Surge: StatCan

ew housing construction investment in BC was up 31.9 per cent year over year, Statistics Canada reported July 21, led by a leap of 53 per cent for apartmentcondo buildings. Apartment-condos overtook detached homes as the housing type with the most investment in the province in May, up 4.3 per cent from April of this year to $419 million. May’s total new housing construction investment in BC of $937 million was just shy of April’s record-breaking $945 million, but still well above the previous record of $874 million from October 2015. The 0.9 per cent monthly dip was

primarily caused by a 7.3 per cent decrease in single-family home construction from April’s high of $430 million to $399 million in May, although investment in this home type was still up 17.4 per cent year over year. Townhouse and row house construction was up 35.5 per cent year over year to $90 million, a 5.1 per cent increase from April. Year-over-year duplex investment dropped again, down 6.3 per cent to $27.8 million, although this was up 3.8 per cent month over month. BC’s new housing construction investment was second only to that of Ontario, which spent $1.7 billion

in May. However, the year-over-year percentage increase was larger for BC, with Ontario seeing 24.3 per cent growth. In contrast to the strong yearly gains in BC and Ontario, investment in new housing construction fell in more than half of Canada’s provinces and territories: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nunavut all saw year-over-year declines. Alberta’s 31.4 per cent drop was its 11th consecutive year-over-year decline. The gains in Ontario and BC pushed national new housing construction up five per cent year over year to $4.2

billion in May, although this was a dip of 2.3 per cent from April. Most of the yearly gain came from higher investment in apartment-condominium construction, which rose 17.2 per cent year over year to $1.5 billion nationwide. Row house construction also increased nationally, rising 13.4 per cent to $454 million. Like the previous month, year-overyear investment in duplexes was down nationally, dropping 10.7 per cent to $206 million. Investment in singlefamily homes was also down year over year for the first time since February, dipping 2.6 per cent to $2 billion for the country as a whole.

Jr. adanacs move on to round two Coquitlam club downs saints in four games Gary McKenna

The Tri-CiTy News

The Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs are one step closer to the Minto Cup. The B.C. Jr. ‘A’ Lacrosse League team dispatched the Port Coquitlam Saints 10-3 Tuesday night, eliminating the first round opponent in four games and setting the stage for a second round against either the New Westminster Salmonbellies or the Delta Islanders. PoCo was able to keep things close in the first half of the game but appeared to run out of gas toward the end of the game. With the game knotted at 3-3, the Saints offence dried up and Coqutilam went on a run that included three goals from Tyler Pace (he finished the

game four goals and one assist), two from Dereck Downs while Dennon Armstrong and Brett Kujala added singles. When the final buzzer sounded the Jr. Adanacs were up 10-3. Christian Del Bianco was strong in net, stopping 33 of the 36 shots he faced and only allowing three goals for 0.917 save percentage. The first three games of the series went much the same way. Coquitlam won Game 1 last week 13-8, followed by a 9-6 victory in PoCo in Game 2 and an 11-5 win on Game 3. The Delta Islanders currently lead their series against New Westminster 3-2 and the teams are scheduled to play Friday in New West and Sunday in Ladner. Whoever wins the series will go up against Coquitlam, who have not lost a game this season. For more information and a complete schedule go to www. bcjall.com sports@tricitynews.com @TriCityNews

The Coquitlam Adanacs will use their last game of the Western Lacrosse Association regular season to honour long-time team doctor Donald Hedges during an alumni event. Hedges has been with the squad for three decades, serving as both physician and president over the years. In that time, he has won several awards for his work, including the Best Practices Award from Sports Medicine B.C. and Physician of the Year honours from Community Sports Medicine. He is also a Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame indcutee in the builders category. The Adanacs will play their last regular season game on Aug. 6 against the Victoria Shamrocks at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex. The game starts at 7 p.m.

BC SUMMER GAMES

B.C. Games are a gold rush for PoCo’s Chong Three medals for 15-year-old track athlete Gary McKenna

The Tri-CiTy News

Track and field athlete Jarrett Chong came within a few metres of breaking meet record in javelin during the B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford. However, his 51.68 score was enough for a gold medal, one of three first-place performances the 15-year-old Port Coquitlam resident had at the Games.

Later in the week, he won the shot put event with a 16.24 and the hammer throw event with a 52.213 score. Chong was not the only PoCo athlete to win gold last week. Victoria Tocheva took first place in the girls 400 m, 200 m and 50 m freestyle swim, while taking silver in the 800 m and bronze in the 100 m. Also in the pool, Coquitlam’s Kai Wing Kong won silver in the 1,500 m freestyle swim with a time of 17:34.47, while Grace Lin, also of Coquitlam, won bronze in the 200 m butterfly. Meanwhile, Maleka Rostami snagged silver in the synchro-

nized swimmer 13-15 year division and bronze in the solo event with a score of 64.391. On the track, Jaden Severy won a pair of medals. The Coquitlam athlete grabbed a silver in the boys 100 m with a time of 12.19 seconds and a silver in the 200 m with 23.61 seconds. Natasha Smigelski won bronze in the 800 m with a time of 2:22.3, while Carly Seeman won silver in the girls high jump with a score of 1.6 m. Port Moody’s Jenevieve Patry-Smith won bronze in the girls shot put (11.67 m) and gold in javelin (39.44 m). Three Coquitlam wrestlers

also left Abbotsford with medals last week. Kyle Mills won silver in the 51 kg weight class, while Hunter Joseph took silver and Harris Valdes took bronze in the 57 kg event. Rachel Whitemore won two silvers and a gold in the three equestrian events at the games, while Mika Asano took silver in the open canoe kayak competition. Other Tri-City medal winners include Jacob Haddon, who won bronze in both the jump and wakeskate during the towed water sports competition, and Port Moody’s Sara Stone, who took silver in the sailing event.

BC SUMMER GAMES

First place for Fraser A VERY LIMITED River lacrosse team

TIME OFFER

Players set aside rivalries and win at B.C. Games

A group of midget lacrosse players were able to put their club-team rivalries aside and win a gold medal for the regional Zone 4 Fraser River squad at the B.C. Summer Games last week. “These kids battle against their cross-town rivals from New West, Surrey and the always great battles between Coquitlam and PoCo,” said coach Josh Wahl. “When it came down to becoming teammates, these kids really bonded.” The championship game against Thompson Okanagan was the biggest test of the week. Down 6-4 after two periods, Fraser River managed to take control of the game in the final frame, with New Westminster’s Finn Stark bringing the score to within one. PoCo’s Austin Wahl managed to tie things up, while Brett Ginac, another PoCo player, helped his team to its first lead of the game with a hard shot that snuck past Thompson Okangan’s goalie.

The Zone 4 Fraser River team took home gold at the B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford last week. With five minutes left, Wahl added an insurance marker and Fraser River eventually won the game 8-6 to take the championship banner. The tournament got off to a good start for the squad when they took on the Zone 3 Fraser Valley team, shutting out the opponents 9-0. Evan Wray of PoCo and Gabe Procyk of Coquitlam each scored a pair of goals each, while Wahl had a four-point game (one goal and three assists). They shut out their opponents again in the second match, this time a 10-0 performance over the Vancouver Coastal club. Coquitlam’s Mathew Chapman was stellar

in net, while Ginac was a force in the faceoff circle winning 80% of the draws. Port Moody’s Ryan McBeth scored a goal and an assist in the match. A 7-4 win over Vancouver Island, which came only two hours after defeating the Vancouver Coastal team and saw Ryan Johannson score two goals, was all the Fraser River squad needed to secure their spot in the finals. “All 18 boys contribute to each victory — truly a team effort — which is why I believe we achieved the gold,” said Wahl. Other Tri-City atheltes include Tyson Johnson, Trent Kellner and Reese Hyrcan.
