A Coquitlam city councillor who is also vice-chair of the city’s Riverview Lands Advisory Committee has a new role that could potentially land him in a conflict. But Coun. Dennis Marsden told The Tri-City News this week he would recuse himself from any debates at city hall and at the Metro Vancouver board table should the topic of Riverview arise. Marsden was recently named to the board of the directors of the KFN Enterprises, an economic development body for the 82-member Kwikwetlem First Nation. see NO CONFLICT, page 10
BEAR ATTACK
Girl recovering, bear warning issued Bear attack happened on a wellused Coquitlam trail not far from shaughnessy st.
DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News
The girl who was attacked by a bear on Saturday afternoon after a family swim in the Coquitlam River is recovering well in BC Children’s Hospital and is in good spirits
after her terrifying ordeal. Insp. Murray Smith of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service told The Tri-City News that he has spoken to the girl’s family and while he is not revealing their names or providing more personal details to allow them some “private
space,” he says they are doing well despite the ordeal. Still, many questions need to be answered as to how and why the incident occurred on a well-used trail system that runs between Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam not far from busy Shaughnessy Street.
At about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the 10-year-old girl and her father were walking to the parking lot on the Coquitlam side of the trail after a swim in the river when they encountered a mother bear. see GARBAGE, page 3

BEAR ATTACK
Garbage may have kept bears in area continued from front page
Insp. Smith said the girl stopped and then ran, at which point the bear attacked by knocking her down and biting her on the chest. “At that point, it broke her ribs and punctured her lungs so it was a pretty traumatic impact at that point.” The father, who was carrying a boogie board, hit the bear on the head and it ran away, leaving the family time to get to their car and drive to Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody. The girl was later transferred to Children’s Hospital, where she had surgery and stitches to close up the wound, Insp. Smith said. “She’s very lucky. the rest of the injuries are fairly minimal and she seems in good spirits.” When B.C. Conservation officers arrived on the scene at approximately 6:30 p.m., the female bear was still in the area so it was killed but the cub was captured and taken to Critter Care Wildlife Society in Langley, where it will spend the winter. Smith said the cub was not seen as a conflict risk while the female bear had to be destroyed because it wouldn’t leave and had attacked someone. “To ensure public safety, we decided that this was the best result,” he said. He said the bear may have

TRASH TO BLAME? A necropsy will now take place on the frozen carcass of
the bear and will reveal whether it had eaten human garbage. If human food is found in the bruin’s digestive system, that could suggest someone who put two bags of garbage next to a trash bin on the trail is responsible for creating some of the conditions that kept the bears nearby. The garbage, which contained coffee cups, an apple and
McDonald’s containers — and was still in the area when The Tri-City News visited the site Monday morning — may have been one of the reasons the sow and her cub were in the area. Smith is not ready to assign blame for the incident, which he said was a rare and unfortunate occurrence and more likely the result of bad luck, but he said people should know
better than to leave garbage in a known bear area. People who think “the municipality will pick it up and take it away with the rest of the garbage, [such] unscrupulous human behaviour has caused a lot of bears to scavenge human food in the area,” Smith said. He said records going back four months show the sow and cub had not been the subject of
any conflict complaints. Nevertheless, he said conservation officers will continue to crack down on garbage offenders and lay fines, and will work with the cities of Coquitlam and PoCo to make sure scofflaws feel the full force of the law. “If people aren’t co-operating, we need a little more stiffer response,” he said. As for whether the city of Coquitlam should bear any responsibility for the trash next to the bin, Smith said it shouldn’t; in fact, he complimented the city for its network of bearresistant bins along trails and in city parks. “The city of Coquitlam has a really good garbage system for that whole trail area. It’s got good garbage cans, they’re, large, heavy, cement and they’re locked down.” Meanwhile, the city says it will continue to monitor garbage bins along the trails and clean up trash. Kathleen Reinheimer, city parks manager, said trash left outside the garbage can near the location of the bear attack, was cleaned up by noon Monday. Reinheimer also said the city will be looking into whether more measures need to be taken to inform people about safe hiking on trails during bear season. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Make noise, always be on alert DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News
A common sense approach is the best way to stay safe on trails in the Tri-Cities, says a wildlife consultant who has spent years educating residents about bear safety. Drake Stephens, who retired from Coquitlam as the city’s urban wildlife co-ordinator, says people shouldn’t walk alone and should keep their dogs leashed. The advice comes after a 10-year-old girl was mauled while walking trails next to Coquitlam River with her father. Stephens doesn’t know what prompted the attack but he says bear attacks are rare — the equivalent of getting hit by lightning. But he warns that the odds of a human/bear conflict increases with an increase in the number of human/bear interactions.
DIANE STRANDBERG/THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Drake Stephens, a wildlife consultant and former Coquitlam Bear Aware co-ordinator, demonstrates the use of bear spray. Stephens also suspects that bear issues are under-reported in the Tri-Cities, Anmore and Belcarra, so it’s hard to get a true idea of the number of bear/human interactions. Still, he says people can live
safely with bears if they take the following steps: • Lock up garbage, get rid of animal attractants around your house, including ripe fruit. • Walk in groups or pairs along local greenbelts.
Your Heating & Cooling Specialist
• Watch for signs along trails such as bear scat; if there are berries along your route, be particularly cautious. • Scuff your feet or make noise to alert bears of your approach. • If your sight-lines are poor when walking in the woods, clap your hands as you approach and round a curve in a trail. • If you see a bear, don’t approach it, speak in a loud firm voice to encourage it to depart; if it doesn’t, go back where you came from. • He doesn’t recommend bells, believing bears are better warned by the sound of the human voice, but suggests people carry bear spray, adding, “It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.” Bear spray can be purchased from sporting goods stores. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC
DON’T wAlk iN FeAr Be aware but don’t be in fear about walking Coquitlam trails, says the BC Conservation Officer Service. Insp. Murray Smith said Saturday’s bear attack on a 10-year-old girl was a rare occurrence and shouldn’t stop people from using the trails. The weekend incident should provide a lesson for people to remember that bears are wild animals and it’s best to walk in pairs or groups, make noise and possibly carry bear spray if you’re a regular hiker. “This is a very rare encounter… We just have to take precautions and learn form it and enjoy our park system and nature,” Smith said. He also reminded people to secure their garbage, remove attractants, including ripe fruit, and not leave garbage on the trails for bears to get into. His comments seemed to reflect the attitude of people The Tri-City News spoke to on the trail near where the attack occurred. Mark Edwards, who was walking the trail with his son, Cameron, and their dog, said he is always careful to keep his dog on leash and locks up the garbage at his home. “We know the rules. Bears are more afraid of us of but it’s still a concern.” Jung Sun Mun, who was walking the trail with her family, said she was sad to hear about the bear attack but she’s careful and it won’t stop her from walking on the trails.

WESTWOOD PLATEAU
Hiker finds arrow, says, ‘Be careful’ GARY MCKENNA The Tri-CiTy News
A Coquitlam resident is warning recreational archers to be more careful about which direction they shoot their arrows. Jeff Creed told The Tri-City News this week he found a bolt with approximately 100-feet of fishing line tied to it stuck in some bushes while hiking
around Ridge Park Loop Trail on Westwood Plateau. “I am guessing that it probably came from one of the houses around there,” he said. The arrow point was wrapped in electrical tape and had a plastic tip but Creed said it would still hurt if it were to hit a hiker. He added that he was also concerned about the attached fishing line being left in the woods. “I thought, ‘I

don’t want any animals getting caught in this,’” he said. He phoned Coquitlam RCMP and an officer retrieved the arrow. Mounties said there had not been any reports of people firing bows in the area. Creed, who routinely hikes the loop, said it is a popular trail, particularly during the warm summer months.

BURKE MOUNTAIN
From Pines to park It was once a set for the television series Wayward Pines but now, a green space at Princeton Avenue and Trafalgar Street on Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain will be transformed into a park. Construction began on the 0.7-acre property Monday and when it is completed later this year, it will include a park entry feature, a play area for children of all ages, built-in seating
around the playground and a path system. There will also be an informal grass picnic area. The work is expected to cost the city $906,500, according to a detailed budget and design that was passed unanimously by city council in May. The area will be closed off to the public while the work is taking place.

Anyone with a bicycle collecting dust in their basement or garage is being encouraged to donate it to KidSport TriCities. The charitable organization, which equips young people in need with athletic gear and funding for sports registration fees, donated 25 bikes to Syrian refugee families that arrived in the area over the last year. Chris Wilson, a spokesperson for KidSport, said a bicycle can be a main mode of transportation for someone who is new to Canada. “It can allow them to apply for jobs or get to their language training,” he said. “It makes things a lot easier for them.” While KidSport collects donations year round, families are invited to drop off bicycles or any other gently used sports equipment to the Port Coquitlam rec centre, the Port Moody recreation complex or the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex between now and Aug. 19. All of the items collected will be on sale this weekend at the KidSport used equipment sale, which will take place at the Poirier complex (633 Poirier St., Coquitlam) on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wilson told The Tri-City News that with hockey season around the corner, a child can be outfitted from skates to helmet for $100, including stick. For an adult, the price rises to about $130. Equipment for many other sports, including lacrosse and baseball, is also available, with all proceeds going to KidSport

Police want witnesses to fatal MVA last Thursday GARY MCKENNA The Tri-CiTy News
RCMP accident investigators are still looking for witnesses to a collision last Thursday at North Road and Lougheed Highway that left a 79-year-old woman dead. The incident shut down the intersection for more than six hours and snarled traffic in the area for most of the after-work commute, however few witnesses have spoken to police. “As busy as the intersection was, we have only had a couple of people come forward,” said Coquitlam RCMP Const. Jamie
Phillipson. “We are still asking anyone that was in the area to come forward.” Mounties do not believe that impairment or the use of an electronic device was a factor in the collision and ICARS and the Coquitlam Co-ordinated Collision Investigation Team have been investigating. Police believe the crash may have been the result of mechanical problems or driver error, but they are hoping for more witnesses to piece together what happened. “Investigators have ruled out distracted driving,” Phillipson added.
The incident occurred at around 2:12 p.m. when a Honda Accord collided with a Dodge Caravan that was being driven by the 79-year-old woman and was stopped at a red light at Lougheed facing north on North Road. The impact caused the Dodge to collide with a Scion that was in front, pushing the vehicle into the intersection. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Coquitlam RCMP at 604-9451550 and quote file number 2016-26243. gmckenna@tricitynews.com @gmckennaTC

Merchants and property owners in downtown Port Coquitlam have a new champion. And Susanna Walden will likely be a familiar face for many local business people, having previously worked for the New View Society, the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce and Retail BC. Last week, Walden was hired as the executive director of the Downtown Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association (BIA), on a one-year contract, to replace Kayla Steele. Walden told The Tri-City News last Friday she has come in at an ideal time while the city is still on a high from the inaugural PoCo Grand Prix and just before the 12th annual Downtown Port Coquitlam Car Show on Sunday — a gathering that’s expected to draw up to 60,000 visitors to the core. Her first task as executive director will be to survey the 300plus merchants and land owners about the professional cycling race last month. Walden, who volunteered for the event, said she wants to gain feedback to prepare for next year (the city has committed to hosting the BC Superweek event for a

The band, which has two reserves within Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam municipal boundaries, has an aboriginal title claim before the B.C. Supreme Court for a small but significant portion of its traditional territory that includes the Riverview Hospital lands, the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, Colony Farm — a Metro Vancouver regional park — and Gates Park in Port Coquitlam. Currently, Riverview is undergoing a visioning process by BC Housing and the city to develop the 244 acres that once housed thousands of mental health patients. Besides his civic titles, which include being chair of the city’s economic development advisory committee, Marsden is also an alternate Metro Van board director for Coquitlam. On Monday, Marsden said he was invited to join the KFN Enterprises board and, on May 31, it had its first meeting. Marsden said he will be paid for the work but did not say how much. His role with KFN Enterprises “is [as] with any board: to provide that oversight on governance,” he said. “I would offer my expertise in general business operations. I offer expertise in HR, my expertise in terms of finance… I just do my overall 30-plus years of business experience.” Marsden defended his new job with KFN Enterprises, saying it deals strictly with business operations and is separate from any legal claim the band has for Riverview land. He also vowed to recuse himself from civic and Metro board talks should the matter arise. Marsden said he has had no feedback from Coquitlam council or the community about his KFN post. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, who also chairs the Metro Vancouver board of directors, told The Tri-City News last week it’s up to Marsden to determine if his KFN role is a conflict of interest. “It would only be a conflict if he was sitting as an alternate [for Metro] and the land titles issue was presented in front of us,” Moore said, adding, “It’s not up to the board chair or the mayor of the community to determine if someone has a conflict of interest.” The province’s Community Charter sets out ethical conduct for elected officials, specifically addressing conflicts of interest, inside and outside influence, gifts, contracts, use of inside information and exceptions. Under Section 100 of the legislation, a city councillor must declare a conflict of interest if he or she has a direct or indirect pecuniary interest in

COUN. DENNIS MARSDEN a matter under consideration (a council member must also declare a conflict if he or she has some other, non-pecuniary type of interest that places the person in a conflict position). Section 101 states the council member must recuse him or herself from any part of the meeting in which the matter is under consideration and must not take part in any discussion of or vote on the matter. Coun. Craig Hodge, chair of the city’s Riverview Lands Advisory Committee, said he has not yet spoken with Marsden about his new KFN post but he said it will likely be discussed by his advisory committee and council after the summer break. “I’m certain there are some people on the committee who will be asking and I think it will be up to Coun. Marsden to explain,” he said. According to its website, KFN Enterprises is a holding company that handles project management, land development, commercial and light industrial property management and venture capital financing on behalf of the band. “KFNE is owned 100% by the Kwikwetlem First Nation but managed at arm’s length from the Kwikwetlem community and council,” the website reads. The corporation is overseen by Kwikwetlem First Nation Chief Ron Giesbrecht and civil project consultant David Leitch, and governed by directors Marsden, Carol Lee and Gary Gottfriedson. Jenna Cyr, KFN Enterprises’ chief information officer and manager of partnerships and business, as well as Giesbrecht and the band council’s executive assistant, did not return requests for comment. Meanwhile, PoCo’s Moore praised the band for reaching out to gain public input on its business ventures. Moore described his relationship with Chief Giesbrecht as “excellent.” “Even though we have this

‘Drug use isn’t going anywhere’: Bouvier There’s no ‘easy fix’ for problem of drug use by local young people DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News
The executive director of an organization serving youth in the Tri-Cities is concerned that outrage over the overdose death last week of a 16-yearold Coquitlam girl will dissipate without anything being done to prevent future losses of life. Jerome Bouvier said concerns over designer drugs have come and gone over the years but resources for young people have not increased to keep up with the population. At the same time, he told The Tri-City News, youth are becoming increasingly more isolated from trustworthy adults because they spend so much time on their smartphones. “The point being is that drug use isn’t going anywhere, [drug pushers] are just getting more creative with kids,” said Bouvier, of Access Youth
Outreach Services. “And kids have less to do, they’re more stuck in the media age, they’re not connected into the family anymore.” Bouvier said he was saddened to learn of the death of Gwynevere Staddon, who overdosed in the washroom of a Port Moody Starbucks on Aug. 7. But he said the only way to protect youth is for everyone in the community — parents, politicians, community workers and neighbours — to do something to help, whether it be finding resources or taking time to engage local teens. Youths who are engaged with their community are much less likely to do drugs, Bouvier said, but those who struggle with mental health concerns are vulnerable and are easily preyed upon by drug dealers. “You’ve got kids having to make adult decisions, and it’s hard to do. “Where do you fit in? Who do I hang out with?” Bouvier said he doesn’t think it is useful to point fingers of blame at any single government but he said he believes cities could do more because they are allowing more development — which means more
people — and collecting more in taxes without increasing social services. He’s also concerned that while detox services are available for youth who need them, getting space in a rehabilitation facility is harder to do. “You can get detox very quickly but then you’ve got five, six months to sit around and go nuts.” He would like to see more resources for programs such as Access, which supports at-risk youth and operates a bus that meets up with teens in local parks and helps them with their issues. He also thinks a shelter for homeless youth is needed. But he admitted that solving the problem of youth drug use is not “an easy fix.” And while fentanyl is a concern now, and believed responsible for a spike in drug overdose deaths, Xanax, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety disorders, is more widely seen in this area. Still , he said Access will be producing an information card on fentanyl, that will soon be made available on its website, www.accessyouth.org. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC

OUR OPINION
A frightening wake-up call T he mauling on Saturday of a 10year old girl on a trail in Coquitlam is a wake-up call to people who think they don’t need to worry about bears. It’s true bears are probably less dangerous than an excitable unleashed dog — and will generally run away if startled. But increasing numbers of bruins are making their homes in Tri-City neighbourhoods, prompting a need for greater vigilance about garbage and other bear attractants, and awareness about how to be safe in the woods. This is not a call to cull bears or arm vigilante groups with poison, tranquilizer guns, traps or bear spray but is simply a request for people to know what to do when they’re walking on a trail (clap to let them know you’re coming, talk loudly, scuffle your feet) and back off if you see a bruin in your path. Of course, you should also
also leash your dog and keep your children close. The problem is this message is not being heard and some people are still leaving garbage out — or worse, dumping household garbage in city parks. This is like opening
up a McDonald’s franchise in the woods and inviting bears to drop by for dinner. It’s stupid. And what’s more, garbage dumping may have created a perfect storm for the tragic assault of the

youngster on a trail near the Coquitlam River. That garbage, strewn about next to a bear-resistant trash bin, was clearly visited by bears, which had left scat and half-eaten apples next to it. Should the city have cleaned up the garbage sooner? Certainly. Could there be signs reminding people to be alert about bears and be cautious on trails? Absolutely. But sadly, those messages often go unheeded and likely wouldn’t have prevented Saturday’s incident because the animal involved was clearly protecting its cub, was not a known garbage bear and was likely startled. We can’t be complacent and if the city is going to allow more homes and trails to be built in bear habitat, much more effort, including deterrents and constant reminders, are needed to ensure people, and bears, are safe from one another.

PORT MOODY
Road through park old way of thinking The Editor, Re. “East-west road needed in PoMo” (Letters, The TriCity News, Aug. 10). I found the letter from Peter Bevan-Stewart to be an interesting read and in need of rebuttal. The David Avenue connector was indeed identified in 1984 as part of Port Moody’s official community plan. That was 32 years ago. Port Moody and area have changed considerably since then, and so has the OCP. In fact, it has changed twice in the five years I’ve lived here. Thus, the OCP is fluid for adjustment. Mr. Bevan-Stewart states, “The Advisory Planning Commission of Electoral Area B, working with the GVRD planning department, created an extensive advanced street plan covering the area north and west of Port Moody in the mid 1970s.”
CONTACT
What the writer fails to acknowledge is that the right-ofway through Bert Flinn Park (the proposed David Avenue extension) was changed from a “General Urban” designation to a “Conservation and Recreation” designation in the Greater Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy Amendment Bylaw No. 1223, 2015. It reads in the strategy: “The Conservation and Recreation land use designation is intended to help protect the important environmental and recreation areas throughout the region. Strategies and actions recognize the importance of providing connectivity throughout the region linking important natural features, and emphasize the collaborative effort needed to protect and enhance natural assets.” Which Metro Vancouver growth strategy does Mr. Bevan-Stewart think has
more validity? One from the 1970s, when Bert Flinn Park didn’t exist, or one from a little over a year ago? The writer mentions that the residents of Ioco Road and Barber Street area are affected because of the popularity of White Pine Beach, Buntzen Lake and Belcarra Regional Park. Is he suggesting we destroy a natural haven because a few people are inconvenienced on weekends, three months of the year? As a frequent user of all the mentioned parks, I can assure you there is little traffic nine months of the year. Perhaps Mr. Bevan-Stewart would like to take the time to visit savebertflinnpark. com and research the five alternative actions that could be taken to alleviate any traffic pressure that may (or may not) exist, without destroying a treasure of natural beauty. PoCo, look after Maple Creek The Editor, Re. “Streamkeepers disturbed at request to move creek to make way for house” (The TriCity News, Aug. 10). I hope other citizens are as outraged as I am by the fact that a rich person can get different levels of government to possibly allow him to build a monstrosity on top of Maple Creek. This is setting an ugly precedent that could have far-reaching damage to our
delicate salmon industry and it is demonstrating a total disregard for future generations’ birthright. I am not surprised by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which has always displayed a total disregard and ineptness when it comes to protecting the West Coast. And I am not totally surprised by approval given by the Kwikwetlem First Nation. If Port Coquitlam council gives approval to this indignity,

ICONIC CARZ ON DISPLAY Some say it is difficult for one person to make a difference but Steven Eglsaer begs to differ. He is the founder of the Port Coquitlam’s own Iconic Carz (www.iconiccarz.com) that helps put a smile on the face of children that are less fortunate. The idea stemmed from Eglsaer’s own childhood and the shows of the 80’s. “Those shows just had that feel good vibe, the good guys always triumphed over evil and no one ever died. The message was simple… always try to do your best” he says. In 2013 the owner of Kert Landscaping Ltd got the motivation to start Iconic Carz when he became aware of a very sick boy whose dream was to have a ride in the 1974 Gran Torino from the classic
Starsky and Hutch show. “Understanding how lucky I was to have two healthy children, the passion became to help raise money for kids and families that were dealt a different set of cards.” That boy indeed got that ride in the Gran Torino and Eglsaer along with his brother Robert also have completed the General Lee, A-Team Van, Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T., Buford T Justice and Rosco P Coltrane’s police cars and attended many fundraising events for sick kids. They will all be on display at the corner of Shaughnessy and Wilson. Stop by and get your picture with an Iconic Carz!
WALL OF RECOGNITIONTurkey Roasts to donating a 1966 Chevelle “Racing Raven” 20 June 13 is an important date in the history of B&J Auto Parts. In 1968 Bill and Joyce Salstrom opened the doors on that day and now, almost 50 years later, a second generation of the family is still faithfully supporting Poco auto enthusiasts. From their first location at Kingsway and Maple to the current facility on Kingsway, which also includes a full-service machine shop, the family motto remains the same says youngest son (and president) Scott, “we maintain a family atmosphere here and it is a place where you never have to justify your project.” They have also been supporting the youth for over 35 years by honouring the top automotive student at Terry Fox Sr. with the B&J Parts Award in addition

Positive body image is a plus for PoCo-based women’s magazine

Svingen-Jones’ FabUplus looking for mag niche DIANE STRANDBERG The Tri-CiTy News
A
Port Coquitlam woman is flipping the bird to the fitness and lifestyle magazine industry with a new publication that highlights the beauty, talents and accomplishments of plus-size women. FabUplus was in stores starting in June and features similar health and fitness articles, recipes and motivational encouragement you might find in a typical women’s magazine but instead of ultra lean supermodels and skinny actresses on the cover and in the ads, the photos feature Rubenesque, curvy women working out, dancing or modelling the latest fashions. The brainchild of Shannon Svingen-Jones, mother of two and recent MBA graduate, FabUplus aims to tap into the zeitgeist of women larger than a size 14 who are tired of being shamed, blamed and marginalized for their shape. “Readers are telling me how powerful it is to stand at the checkout and see someone that looks like them,” said SvingenJones. A second issue is in the works for September and will break even at $6.99 a copy, SvingenJones predicts, arguing that her magazine is alone in tapping a market of larger women who have money to spend and are loyal to companies that celebrate rather than judge them. “Not all mainstream media has embraced body positivity and the body-positivity move-
Shannon Svingen-Jones with the first copy of her magazine FabUplus tailored for curvy women. Svingen-Jones, who recently completed her MBA and lives in Port Coquitlam, said the magazine is gaining traction among those supportive of the body-positive movement, which encourages people to adopt more forgiving and affirming attitudes toward their bodies. ment,” said Svingen-Jones. In fact, it was only a year ago that she came up with the idea for FabUplus after her own lifetime battle with weight loss led to the doctor’s office. Expecting to learn she was a candidate for weight loss surgery after completing a battery of tests, Svingen-Jones, who weighed 245 lb. at the time, was told by her doctor she was perfectly healthy. “Go be you,” she said the doctor told her. “I actually realized there was nothing wrong with me,” Svingen-Jones said. The epiphany led the active mom — a regular runner — to question some of the media messages she saw around her. When she picked up a fit-
ness magazine featuring a hyper-thin model lifting ultraheavy weights, Svingen-Jones thought: “How is that even possible?” She also wondered whether there were other women who were tired of being put down in the media or ignored. When My Big Fat Fabulous Life star Whitney Way Thore agreed to be her cover model and be interviewed, the PoCo publisher knew she was on to something. Traditional media is also taking notice, with stories in the Vancouver media, as well as Elle and People magazines in the U.S. There are challenges, however, in publishing a plus-size magazine in a culture that is
obsessed with thinness. Advertisers have to be comfortable with being in a publication that celebrates larger women and Svingen-Jones has had to turn away a few advertisers if they weren’t supportive or respectful of plus-size women. But there is an upside, too, in that her readers are extremely loyal and those who who have purchased the summer edition are waiting for the next installment. “For the first time, we have a publication that is not changing who we are.” • FabUplus is on Facebook, Instagram (@fabuplus) and Twitter (@FabuplsM). dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC
how a rookie made a go of publishiNg
FabUplus is printed in Winnipeg, with distribution in Canada and the U.S. through Chapters, Indigo, Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart, Save-On-Foods, Barnes and Noble and Books-A-Million Online Book Store. Shannon Svingen-Jones has a business administration background but had never been active in publishing. She sought out mentors who had turned their hobbies and interest into widely read magazines. Content is not available online; you have to purchase the print edition to get the photos and articles. Svingen-Jones decided to opt for print over online distribution after her surveys found readers preferred print. In addition to personal financing, Svingen-Jones, a Métis woman, received a start-up grant from tale’awtxw, an organization that supports aboriginal-owned businesses.

COQUITLAM 125: HIGHLIGHTS FROM HISTORY
The road of the future STORIES OF THE CITY COQUITLAM HERITAGE SOCIETY This is the latest instalment of a series of columns produced by the Coquitlam Heritage Society to coincide with the city of Coquitlam’s 125th birthday this year. The columns are published every few weeks.
T
raditionally, armies have contributed in developing civil infrastructure during peacetime. For example, the German army’s reliance on trains in the 1860s to move their troops meant that, by 1900, the country had of one of the most sophisticated rail networks in Europe. In 1858 in British Columbia, a combination of a local gold rush and the need to build up
military infrastructure by the Fraser River saw the introduction of a 150-man detachment of British Army sappers of the Royal Engineers (the Columbia Detachment) under the command of Col. Richard Moody (namesake of the city of Port Moody). The Columbia Detachment was tasked with a range of surveying and roadbuilding projects around the Lower Mainland. They surveyed the land that would later become the location of the city of New Westminster. They also laid down the route that would later become the basis for today’s North Road. Around the time the Royal Engineers were first gathered, the British colonial administrators were considering the possibility of a war with the United States. If that had happened, American troops attacking in the direction of New
Westminster could have easily isolated the town, given that the Fraser River was the most accessible avenue to the outside world. This vulnerability was solved in 1859 when Col. Moody ordered the construction of a new north-south road. Beginning at the engineer camp at New Westminster and terminating at Burrard Inlet, this road ensured that British ships could bypass a Fraser River under American control and offload supplies or reinforcements for the local garrison. As initially built, the road could only accommodate human traffic until 1861, when it was improved to handle wagons. That road later became today’s North Road and Coquitlam’s western boundary. It remains a physical symbol of the Royal Engineers’ role in Coquitlam’s history.

Fashion biz fiction from ex-model JANIS WARREN The Tri-CiTy News
Jackie Amsden spent her early teenage years dreaming about becoming a full-time, professional model. She had read a local newspaper story about a successful model and religiously followed the careers of superstars Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington. At 15, Amsden got an agent and, a year later, she was off to Japan on her first contract. “I thought my dream was coming true,” the Port Moody resident recalled. Amsden had the look the Japanese fashion industry sought: Tall, white skin, big eyes and a heart-shaped face. And, over the course of two years, she gained work in Taiwan and Hong Kong as well to represent Shiseido, Elite Models, Monique Magazine, Fuji Daimaru and Lee Jeans. But by 18, the Thomas Haney secondary grad had become disillusioned. She was put in compromising situations — including having to disrobe for a photo shoot — and had developed an eating disorder. She also had become angry and judgmental. “I wasn’t taking very good care of myself,” she remembered. After two years in the fashion world, she quit. Amsden used some of her modelling money to travel Europe and to pay for her communications degree at Simon Fraser University. Last spring, she started to write a young adult book of fiction based on her modelling experiences overseas. Next month, Amsden will officially launch her self-published work, The Tokyo Cover

Port Moody author Jackie Amsden’s debut novel, The Tokyo Cover Girls, launches next month. The young adult book follows three teenage girls working in the fashion industry in Japan, where Amsden herself modelled between the ages of 16 and 18.

Girls, during a blog tour for book reviewers in Vancouver. In it, Amsden creates three teenage characters (one from Canada, two from the U.S.) who compete for a commercial campaign; however, their quest turns deadly. Amsden said while the murder-mystery novel is supposed to be a fun, light-hearted read, it also sheds light on some of the pitfalls involved in the fashion industry. These days, the proliferation of social media — with teens posting sexualized photos of themselves — has augmented the myth about modelling, she warned. And there are lots of opportunities for young people to be unknowingly victimized. “Though it’s often portrayed as being this glamorous lifestyle, the modelling industry can be a very scary place for young girls. In my novel, the three characters must confront all the dangers of that world in a way that I hope will make young readers think differently about what it means to be a Karlie Kloss or a Gigi Hadid.” Now, when moms ask her advice about sending their daughters into the beauty business, the ex-model, fashion blogger and mother-of-two is plain spoken. “You can make some good cash but you have to be cautious,” she said during an interview last week. “You have to be a well-rounded person to have something else to fall back on when it’s over. You just can’t be a model forever.” • The Tokyo Cover Girls will be unveiled Sept. 15 at Christianne’s Lyceum of Literature and Art (3696 West 8th Ave., Vancouver) from 7 to 10 p.m. It is also available through Amazon and her website jackieamsden.com.

Coq. student, 9, pens book with stepmom about blended family JANIS WARREN The Tri-CiTy News
Madison Reaveley is a Grade 4 student at Leigh elementary in Coquitlam and has a large family that adores her. But sometimes they get in her way. Because she comes from a blended family, Reaveley is picked up and dropped off from school by a host of relatives: Her mom and dad, stepparents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents all make sure Reaveley is looked after. Typically, on their way to collect her, they get stuck in traffic so they call the school secretary. As a result, Reaveley has to sit in the office to wait for them. And that bums her out because she’d rather be playing outside with her buddies. In January, when her stepmom telephoned the school secretary to say she was running a little late, Reaveley piped up. She had had enough. On the drive home to West Vancouver, Reaveley explained to Megan Williams her frustration. Williams agreed to not call the school — even when she

was two minutes behind. The pair also agreed to write a story based on Reaveley’s experience of having a blended family. Over the course of two months, they sketched out the plot — in the same style as Canadian children’s author Robert Munsch — for a new book, aptly titled Don’t Call The Office. They also hired a friend’s daughter to illustrate the publication. Cathryn John, a New Westminster resident and a student at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, worked with Williams and Reaveley to create the colourful characters and scenes (it was also her first time to work on a children’s book). And, at John’s suggestion, the trio also created a companion colouring book. Williams then used her experience as a self-published author (Our Interrupted Fairy Tale, 2014) to get the finished product to the printers and to market it. On Monday, they stopped by The Tri-City News’ office for their first interview; that night, they were featured on the radio station CKNW and, on
Saturday, they’ll make an appearance on the Global News morning show. It will be followed by the book launch at Chapters Metrotown from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (a Chapters Coquitlam unveiling is set for this fall). Reaveley said she enjoyed writing the 24-page book with her stepmom and she plans to show it to her class when the academic year restarts. Williams also said Don’t Call The Office fills a publishing gap: Most books about blended families are self-help and geared to adults. By contrast, theirs is a story co-written by a child, for children. Already, Williams has contacted School District 43 to see if the book can be available in Tri-City school libraries. And she promised another story about about the protagonist, Cameron Parker, and her big, blended family is on the way. • Don’t Call The Office and its colouring book are available via meganwilliams.ca, Amazon and Chapters/Indigo. jwarren@tricitynews.com @jwarrenTC

He is not the biggest player. He is not the strongest player. But Port Moody tennis athlete Jared MacLean is taking on some of his sports’ toughest competition and finding ways to win with speed, smarts and determination. “I sort of had a breakthrough,” the Grade 11 Heritage Woods secondary student told The Tri-City News during an interview at the People’s Court in Coquitlam, where he trains with Global Tennis Academy. “I had a pretty rough indoor season but I fought my way back and started getting my confidence up and just playing better tennis.” His hard work has paid off. During the U16 B.C. Outdoor Provincials last month, MacLean and his partner won the doubles championship and he was a finalist in the singles event. One of the wins came in the semifinals against Eddie Wu, a friend and classmate MacLean has lost to nine times this season. “He was happy for me, but Eddie is a competitor, so he didn’t like losing that much,” he said. A week after the under-16 provincials MacLean was back at it, only this time against the bigger and stronger athletes in the under-18 tournament, where he was also a finalist. His performance during both championships helped vault him up the standings and punch his ticket to the under16 nationals in Gatineau, Que., as well as the under-18 nationals in Toronto this week. He is currently ranked No. 4 in B.C. and No. 30 in Canada for his age group. But 2016 has not been as smooth as MacLean had hoped. Coming off of injury in his first year in the under-16 division, he struggled during the indoor season, falling 15 positions in the standings. But he started to turn the page when tennis moved back outdoors, where he found his footing and his confidence. Wins followed shortly. “I worked hard and kind of held up against the bigger

I am not going to win that way.” Instead, he uses his footwork and endurance, an ability that he has had since his younger days as a soccer player in the Coquitlam Metro-Ford system. Tennis coach Shayan Mirhosseini said he recognized MacLean’s ability to move around the court the first time he saw him play as a four year old at the People’s Court back in 2004. “You could see it,” Mirhosseini said. “He has a natural talent. As a younger kid you could see how well he moved on the court.” Not long after, he started working with MacLean and has coached the young tennis talent ever since. Mirhosseini will accompany his player to the nationals and said he believes he will have a strong showing against the country’s top tennis talent. “He outplays people because he moves so well and he doesn’t get tired,” he added. Longterm, MacLean said he is hoping to land a scholarship at an American university. But for now, he is focusing on the under-16 and under18 national tournaments, an event he is approaching with an underdog mindset. It is an attitude that he said has helped him get his game back on track this season and propelled him to where he is today. “It takes the pressure off,” he said.

ADVERTISING POLICIES All advertising published in this newspaper is accepted on the premise that the merchandise and services offered are accurately described and willingly sold to buyers at the advertised prices. Advertisers are aware of these conditions. Advertising that does not conform to these standards or that is deceptive or misleading, is never knowingly accepted. If any reader encounters non-compliance with these standards we ask that you inform the Publisher of this newspaper and The Advertising Standards Council of B.C. OMISSION AND ERROR: The publishers do not guarantee the insertion of a particular advertisement on a specified date, or at all, although every effort will be made to meet the wishes of the advertisers. Further, the publishers do not accept liability for any loss of damage caused by an error or inaccuracy in the printing of an advertisement beyond the amount paid for the space actually occupied by the portion of the advertisement in which the error occurred. Any corrections of changes will be made in the next available issue. The Tri-CityNews will be responsible for only one incorrect insertion with liability limited to that portion of the advertisement affected by the error. Request for adjustments or corrections on charges must be made within 30 days of the ad’s expiration. For best results please check your ad for accuracy the first day it appears. Refunds made only after 7 business days notice!
TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

of our pArenTs
Mike and BeTSY Bodor
Mom suffered a stroke in March, 2015 and lived out her remaining year and a half between Acropolis Manor in Prince Rupert and Nicola Lodge in Port Coquitlam. Most of her life was spent in Port Moody, where her passion was boating all over the coast on their boat, the John Dee, and being an instructor with the Port Moody Power Squadron and later with the Sunshine Coast Power Squadron. Safe boating was a very important issue to her. She was proud to have achieved the lifetime merit award for over twenty years of volunteer service with the Canadian Power Squadron. The Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 28th at Old Orchard Hall at 600 Bentley Road in Port Moody at 1:00PM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to:
