MELISSA AND CAROLE WEBBER

Associate Counsel, Called to the BC Bar 2007, LLB and B Comm with Honours

This is an exciting time for women in business as our Coquitlam community flourishes. As a second generation Korean Canadian resident in Coquitlam, I am proud to be part of our evolving demographic. I am passionate about our community and enjoy my role serving the tri-cities residents in my law practice and volunteer work having recently served as a Board of Director for the Coquitlam Foundation.

After 30 years in business at Reflections Books, Carole Webber is passing the torch to her daughter-in-law, Melissa Webber. Carole, along with a partner, opened the store in March 1988. Nine years later, Carole bought out the partner and opened The Oasis Wellness Centre upstairs. After a few difficult years in the late 1990’s, when the big box stores opened and the internet began, Reflections is again prospering and has attracted a large following of loyal customers. As she retires, Carole is excited that Melissa will be taking over the business, and that it is to remain in the family. Melissa left the corporate world to follow her desire of becoming a small business owner, and to participate in the spiritual expansion of not only herself, but the community!

BUSINESS TERRI SPILSBURY Congratulations to all mothers, daughters, sisters and friends for yet another successful year in business! I can say that as a woman in business, this year has certainly been one of change, growth and excitement. As Co-Owner and Managing Broker of one of the largest real estate brokerages in the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge areas, I understand the need for all three. We at Keller Williams Elite Realty focus on a culture where our agents can find balance in their lives by working smarter…not harder. One of our proudest accomplishments is RED Day when our entire company (177,000 plus agents worldwide) cease operations to focus on giving back locally. In previous years our offices have worked on restoring the gardens

for patients in palliative care, completed a total yard renovation and pool installation for a group home for the developmentally disabled, cleaned up the Coquitlam River and surrounding parkland and partnered with Ruben’s Shoes to collect over 2000 pairs of gently loved shoes for shipment to third world countries for children in need. We host education programs in our onsite training centre for agents at all stages of their careers. Keller Williams is the #1 training company in the world and we want to make sure our agents have access to the very best. If you are considering a career in real estate, want to attend one of our classes or even lend a hand for Red Day, give my office a call at (604) 468-0010.

For over a decade our family and facility has grown and we are fortunate to have such an amazing group of women to work alongside each day. We share the common goal of providing a safe, clean, and friendly environment for your dog to come to for their grooming, socialization, and training needs. Not only are the dogs wonderful, but the people and families that we have come to know have made this journey even more special. Many laughs, tummy rubs, (for the dogs) and yes, even tears have been shared over the years. The one design flaw with dogs is that their time with us is all too short. We look forward to caring for your puppies, tenacious teenaged dogs and your dignified senior dogs in the years to come and are thankful to our clients for trusting us with the care of their beloved pets in the past.

REGINA KAISER

Opening its doors in a tiny heritage era house on Queens Street in January 2015, Little Gypsy’s Fine Jewelry, Gifts & Gallery now represents over 40 local B.C. artists in a variety of mediums including jewelry, pottery, artisan glass, paintings, wood and stone carvings, art cards and more! Along with the beautiful jewelry and art is an ever expanding selection of healing stones and crystals, pendulums, metaphysical decks and singing bowls...you never know what you will find, but it’s always a feast for the eyes! If you are looking for custom jewelry design, repairs, or good old fashioned bead stringing and pearl knotting you’ll find it here, as well as shelf upon shelf of beautiful, unique ready to wear jewelry and gorgeous affordable gifts of all kinds. Owner, Lydia Podobnik can be reached at the gallery six days a week and is often found on the porch chatting with customers as they leave the shop, because as far as she is concerned the conversation doesn’t end once the sale is complete. Grab a coffee and come on in, but with so much to see in this tiny space, plan to stay a while!

In the late 90’s I wanted to quiet my mind and reduce stress. I discovered transforming my inner self was most effective through meditation. With the help of qualified teachers I learned to develop my intuition and hear answers to the questions I had about life. It didn’t take long to align with the universe. Inspired, I created Port Moody’s first wellness centre specializing in meditation courses alongside drop in meditation and yoga classes, holistic services, retreats and an uptown metaphysical gift shop.” What started in 2000 as a home based business is now a vibrant community with a team of certified teachers and holistic practitioners bringing a mastery level of services with personalized support that encourage and support men and women. Veracis offers meditation courses, meditation & yoga classes, holistic services, personalized support, Good Karma Gift Shop and our Summer Solstice Retreat, June 15-17, 2018. LISA BEWLEY Coquitlam Wine Kitz is a longtime local business with great energy. I was drawn to this energy as a customer, not knowing where it would lead. Leaving my teaching career of 20 years, it took great courage and a leap of faith, to begin a new journey as an entrepreneur. Wine Kitz is wine, great wine! Making wine is easy, fun, affordable and better for you (fewer preservatives). Customize the experience with your own labels and style. Even though wine is our number one priority, community is important. Building on this theme, the vision is to host workshops featuring local talent. Have a workshop you’d like to share? – call to discuss your ideas. Looking for wine? - mention “Women in Business” and get $20 towards your next purchase. Hope to see you soon!

Her passion for her profession and the well-being of patients is undeniable. Community involvement and mentorship are a priority, and Anita is seen at numerous events coordinating the clinic’s charitable, social and professional engagements. Along with mentoring several other therapists (both within and outside her own clinic) she has served on her Professional Association for over 15 years, currently sits on the Board of Directors for SportMed BC, and facilitates a support & mentorship group for other clinic owners across BC. Her vast experience includes being a therapist for the Host Medical Team during the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games, sitting as Chair of the Sport Professional Practice Group, and extensive experience in prenatal care, postpartum recovery and infant massage. Anita does all this while being a single mom, extensively involved in the activities of two young boys! She hopes to be a role model for other women in business, believing that providing the best in patient care and being honest in business practices is the key to success. Anita says she would be amiss not to give credit to the other incredible women (and men too!) who create the incredible team at Coast Therapy.

BUSINESS NIKI JACQUES Niki Jacques knows a lot about running a business – and maybe even more about running. Jaques, a devoted runner and running coach, manages Nufloors – a 33 year old family business. She rejoined the business 7 years ago when her father was diagnosed with dementia.

An experienced marathoner, she runs three or four races each year, as well as a number of gruelling 50 Km trail races. If that doesn’t sound sufficiently challenging, the mother of two will take on the Mt. Everest marathon this year to mark her 45th birthday. Asked how running helps her business, Jacques says, “Like a marathon, there are tough times, tough decisions and even tougher people to deal with. You put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.”

There are also lessons in business that translate to the trail. Jacques says “Never give up – until you cross that finish line, seal the deal or get a new contract. Like your training, control what you can, let go of what you cannot.”

“Consistency is everything” she says, “Slow and steady wins the race in life – not erratic and out of control. You can’t win a marathon overnight and you can’t be successful in businesses overnight. You must put in the hard work” For Niki and Nufloors 17 employees, that attitude has resulted in winning performance in the day-to-day competition of running a business.
