What help is available for addicted teenagers? Concerns about long-term care Sarah Payne

The Tri-CiTy News

Days after the overdose death of a 16-year-old Coquitlam girl — and statements from her grieving mother about a shortage of drug treatment options — Fraser Health says the availability of rehab opportunities for youth is a fluid situation and one that can involve a number of agencies. “This truly is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with the family at this

time,” Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said. “Substance use issues are very complex and particularly heartbreaking when they involve teens.” On Sunday Gwyn Staddon, a Gleneagle secondary school student, was found unresponsive in the bathroom of Starbucks on Ioco Road in Port Moody. Emergency crews were unable to revive her. Her mother, Veronica Staddon, stated in The Province that her daughter told her she had been off heroin for a couple of weeks and was getting better. see ‘WE ARE SEEING’, page 3

Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs were unable to win their eighth straight BCJALL championship Tuesday, falling to the Delta Islanders 11-10 in double-OT of the final game in the best-of-three playoff series. Both clubs will be preparing for the Minto Cup, Aug. 20 to 29 in Langley. More on page 27.

Bears stealing apples from the family tree might be a cute subject for a YouTube video but not picking that ripe fruit could net you a $500 fine. That’s the warning from Stephanie Warriner, manager of environmental services for the city of Coquitlam, who says ripe fruit, garbage and green waste with food in it are bear attractants and therefore subject to a city fine if accessible to bruins. So far this year, 55 fines have been handed out, netting the city a hefty $27,500. Warriner said staff have no choice but to issue fines when warnings don’t seem to be working.

Three of the posters created by Fraser Health as part of its advertising and social media campaign, to start in the next few weeks, that is aimed at reducing the number of deaths from drug overdoses.

DRUG SAFETY INFORMATION

Stark message in Fraser Health drug campaign Increased OD nos. prompt urgency from officials Diane StranDberg The Tri-CiTy News

A social media campaign that includes bus shelter advertising, posters in bars and restaurants, and messages on Facebook and Twitter is being launched in the next few weeks targeted to recreational and chronic drug users in the hopes of reducing the number of overdose deaths. Fraser Health spokesperson

Tasleem Juma said a sense of urgency is underlying the campaign, which also involves training people how to recognize an overdose and what to do about it. “The April declaration of overdoses as a public health emergency brought some urgency to the situation. We’re seeing this urgency because of increased overdose numbers, especially this year,” Juma said. The public relations campaign is part of a multipronged overdose response strategy, which also includes preventing substance use, identifying priority sites for safe supervised consumption

services, informing different types of people who use drugs, working with municipalities and other agencies and improving access to opioid substitution therapy such as suboxone, according to Dr. Helena Swinkels, FHA medical health officer for the TriCities area, in an email to The Tri-City News. According to Swinkels, Eagle Ridge Hospital sees as many as four drug overdose cases in its emergency ward each week, and the number of overdose deaths was 10 by the end of June. “Whether you are experimenting for the first time or

regularly using illicit drugs, serious harm or death is a very real possibility each time you use. Opioid-related overdoses are on the rise, and increasingly involve fentanyl,” Dr. Swinkels wrote. Last year, there were 14 opioid drug overdose deaths in the Tri-Cities. • If you use drugs, you can find out how to access a take home naloxone kit through the BC Centre for Disease Control website through the Toward The Heart Program. The hashtag for the campaign is #stopoverdose. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC

DRUG OVERDOSES

DRUG ADVICE FROM FRASER HEALTH Fraser Health advice to people who use drugs, and to their friends and families: • If you are using drugs, do testers and go slow. • If you are using drugs, have a buddy you can trust with you who is sober, able to recognize the signs of an overdose and willing to call for medical help if you need it. • If you are using drugs alone, tell someone before you use, leave the door unlocked and have someone check on you. • If you are using drugs, don’t mix multiple substances, including alcohol. Mixing opioids with downers or with uppers puts you at higher risk of overdose.

OnLInE ExTRA: nALOxOnE InTEREST

Dozens of community service providers, parents and concerned citizens turned out to a meeting Tuesday to learn how to administer naloxone, a substance used to revive drug overdose victims. The meeting, organized by Fraser Health and co-hosted by the Tri-Cities Homelessness and Housing Task Group, was an opportunity for people to learn how to use naloxone and take home a kit. And the good turnout suggests a serious need for programs to support people who abuse opioids.

‘We are seeing that there is an increase’: Sowden continued from front page

“How do you say that the person that you love so much is gone?” Veronica Staddon wrote on Facebook. “My best friend, my daughter, my sweetheart baby… I will never stop missing you, right now my heart won’t stop breaking.” Staddon is speaking out about the lack of affordable rehabilitation options for youth, saying she had tried to find a treatment facility for her daughter but discovered the waiting lists were either too long or the private options too expensive.

GWYn STADDOn Juma said youth in the region who express an interest in dealing with their substance use issues are immediately

connected with services. “We prioritize youth substance use,” Juma wrote in an email to The Tri-City News. “If a teen has an acute substance use issue, we ensure they receive prompt care and connections to services to help them.” Those services include detox beds, mental health and substance services, substance use counselling specializing in youth and intensive treatment services. Juma said there is no wait for youth in crisis and “virtually no wait” for detox services in Fraser Health, although there may be some wait to access

residential treatment services. Regional resources include six detox beds for youth at Creekside in Surrey and four residential treatment beds for youth at The Last Door in New Westminster. Fraser Health can also access provincial beds, or beds in other health authorities. Juma said the wait list for residential treatment is fluid and on average it’s about six weeks, though clients also have access to counselling and other treatment options while they wait. “Day and weekend programs do not turn youth away, ever,” Juma said. “We even provide

transit fare to ensure they are able to make it to these programs.” Diane Sowden of the Children of the Street Society said while getting into detox can take a matter of days, there is still a lack of long-term treatment for youth. “The youth have to be willing and able to do it, and sign themselves in; they can sign themselves out at any time,” Sowden said. “It’s not as simple as just having the services. Does the youth have the ability to make those decisions, or is the drug making the decisions for them?”

Sowden, who said she did not know Staddon, said her organization is finding that drug use among youth in the TriCities is on the rise. “We have youth in our community using meth, using heroin, cocaine. We’re seeing that it has grown in the community. Is it because kids are speaking out more now? I don’t know, but we are seeing that there is an increase. “It’s very, very sad. My heart goes out to this family, I can’t even imagine what they’re going through.”

THIRTY METER TELESCOPE

PoCo’s Dynamic gets $10M ’scope contract Almost two years to finish final design phase alone Sarah Payne

The Tri-CiTy News

Port Coquitlam’s Dynamic Structures has won a $10-million contract to design the enclosure for the world’s most powerful telescope. The final design phase of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) enclosure is expected to take nearly two years to complete. When it’s finished, astronomers will be able to study objects in our own solar system, throughout the Milky Way, in neighbouring galaxies and forming galaxies at the very edge of the observable universe. “It is an honour to be selected to design one of the most sophisticated moving structures on the planet,” said Guy Nelson, executive chairman and CEO of Empire Industries Ltd., which includes Dynamic Structures, in a release. “Dynamic Structures has been actively working on TMT since it was first conceived over 10 years ago. We are looking forward to seeing it through to completion.” The enclosure is one of several key components Canada will be contributing to the TMT partnership, which also includes universities, institutions and governments from the U.S., Japan, China and India; Canada’s commitment will provide up to $243.5 million over 10 years. Dynamic Structures has developed an innovative calotte, or dome, shape for the TMT enclosure that will make it smaller

The enclosure design is expected to take until early 2018; subsequent phases, including fabrication, shipping the enclosure to the project site, supervising its installation and commissioning of the structure, have not yet been awarded. Nelson told The Tri-City News that Dynamic’s staff, which has tripled in the last three to four years and now stands at more than 120 engineers and technical staff, is close to finishing some largescale amusement park projects and is ready to work on the TMT enclosure. “We had already staffed up anticipating this to be executed some time ago,” Nelson said, noting it has been more than a year since the former Conservative federal government made a $70-million pre-

election announcement for the same project but didn’t issue any contracts. “Overall, our business looks like it’s continuing to hire people… We see continued healthy growth,” Nelson added. “Although we’re somewhat concerned with the housing costs in Vancouver. It’s getting increasingly difficult to find people who are prepared to move to Vancouver.” Dynamic is hoping the TMT project will also translate into growth in other departments, including mirror polishing and manufacturing for smaller telescopes suitable for a university. “We could be a turnkey supplier of affordable telescopes,” Nelson said. “I think that’s an area that has good potential job ramifications.” • For more information on the Thirty Meter Telescope visit www.tmt.org.

HELPING

Desperate family turns to SUMMER crowdfunding for med. help IN THE 2016 CITY Sarah Payne

The Tri-CiTy News

After a devastating cancer diagnosis, a Port Coquitlam father is finding hope in a U.S. clinical trial — and hoping the community can rally behind his family’s online fundraising effort to help pay for it. It was early this year when Farhad Abbasi, a regular blood donor, discovered something was wrong with his hemoglobin levels. On March 31, he was diagnosed with leukemia and the following day he began intensive chemotherapy. When that didn’t work, Abbasi began a second protocol of chemo but the following bone marrow biopsy showed the leukemia was still there. He went through a third round of chemo, again with a different cocktail of drugs. “On July 11, they told me that this round of treatment was not successful either, so they told me they have no more treatment,” Abbasi said, the quiet shock still near the surface. “It was devastating. I’m still young, I have a two-year-old daughter. Everything was so pitch dark and I couldn’t figure out how to cope with this situation because literally they said, ‘You’re going to die in a year.’”

FILE PHOTO

Farhad Abbasi, with his daughter, Tina, is hoping to get a clinical trial chemotherapy treatment to fight his leukemia. Abbasi’s wife, Tina, began searching for options in the U.S. and found a good fit in Seattle. But there was an expensive roadblock. “At the beginning, their offer was $1 million for a bone marrow transplant,” Abbasi said, noting in B.C. he would have to be in remission to be eligible for the procedure. The other option is the clinical trial for a new type of chemo but that comes with a price tag of $180,000. “I have a house and can sell it but my leukemia, it’s aggressively growing in my body, I need to do something immediately,” Abbasi said.

His cousin started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Abbasi’s treatment and for living expenses. Both

Abbasi and his wife have been off work from the Coquitlam Town Centre Royal Bank since his diagnosis but their insurance will only cover Abbasi’s longterm disability costs, and as his caregiver, his wife gets limited employment insurance. “I didn’t have the belief that I need to ask people for money,” Abbasi said. “It’s my problem… As long as they pray for me and have a thought for me, it’s worth it. I believe the universe and God will help me to get through this but the community has been really very kind.” The page has so far raised about $50,000 toward the family’s $250,000 goal. • For more info or to donate, visit www.gofundme.com and search for “Abbasi.”

Kidnapping charges BLACK PRESS

A Port Coquitlam man who was wanted in connection with a violent kidnapping in Mission in January of this year has now been arrested and charged. David James Brown was arrested July 28 by Mission RCMP after fleeing from them in a vehicle. Upon his arrest, police allegedly located a loaded handgun in the driver’s side door of the vehicle. The assault for which Brown, 25, was wanted took place on Jan. 13. On that day, police responded to a report of an

injured man wandering in the area of Bear Mountain. The man was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Police determined that the victim had been kidnapped by two men who took him to that remote location, where he was robbed and assaulted. One of the accused, Michael Jared Johnson, 24, was arrested Jan. 22. He was charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm. Mission RCMP issued a public notice in April, asking for help in confirming the identity of the other suspect.

Information from the public pointed police towards Brown, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He remains in custody and has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and kidnapping. He is next scheduled to appear Aug. 17 in Abbotsford provincial court. Police also arrested the passenger of the vehicle, 24-yearold Christopher Sharpe, on charges of breaching his bail conditions and possessing a prohibited weapon. He also remains in custody.

Thank You for Remembering the SHARE FoodBank Every July we run a campaign to help fill the SHARE Food Bank shelves as it is one of the hardest times of the year to get food donations. We want to thank those that donated food and funds to help feed those that live with hunger in the Tri-Cities. It’s people like you that help keep our community strong, so thank you for your support!

OUR OPINION

A girl is gone T

he news this week that a 16-year-old Coquitlam high school student succumbed to drugs in a Port Moody Starbucks washroom is a terrible indictment of the current drug culture. We don’t know for sure that fentanyl was the drug that killed Gwyn Staddon, or whether naloxone would have revived her now that local fire departments are equipped to administer the antidote. We do know, however, that someone’s darling girl is now a statistic in a year when public health officers are declaring drug overdoses by street drugs such as heroin, cocaine, MdMa, methamphetamine and prescription drugs a public health concern. as recently as this week, Canadian border guards and the RCMP intercepted in a parcel from China one kilogram of carfentanil — a drug that is 100 times more potent the fentanyl and enough for 50 million doses. This is proof that our young people are under siege by drug dealers selling this stuff. Sadly, it’s too late for our Coquitlam girl, but her friends commenting on social media may at least help to raise awareness of the risks.

ould it be that voice-activated robotic systems are just another ploy to keep women from attaining true equality? Probably. Last week, my dad and I took a long road trip so that we could be there for one of the final Tragically Hip concerts. I thought it was a neat idea, given that the first concert I ever attended was a Hip show that my father drove me to more than 20 years ago. for this trip, I had one job: program the audio system on his car, a nice little 2011 Toyota that he picked up last month. The plan was to spend a lot of the trip doing what we always do when we have long conversations: Solve all the world’s problems, including but not limited to gender equality, donald Trump, the unjust treatment of first Nations people, racism, donald Trump, patriarchy, donald Trump, the Toronto blue Jays’ bullpen and donald Trump. but first I needed to set up the stereo’s bluetooth system so that we could play podcasts and music from time to time to break up the trip. We hit the road and I started pushing buttons to set up the bluetooth system. That’s when the trouble started. It soon became apparent that this model of automobile wasn’t going to let anyone ma-

TC

nipulate the controls of the audio system while the car was in motion. This was due to “safety concerns,” the helpful robot woman assured me. Instead, we were required to have the driver press the “talk” button on the steering wheel and then we could have a nice conversation with the robot woman about setting up the audio system. Complicating matters was that we were driving on the secondary highways of Saskatchewan, which are maintained about as well as the secondary highways of hell. The audio programming did not go well. The big problem was that the robot lady knew the exact words she wanted to hear from us but she certainly wasn’t going to tell us what they were. “Pardon?” she’d say coldly when we uttered anything that didn’t meet her needs. and when we somehow managed to get something right, she a had a peculiar way of making us repeat and confirm all of our clearly stated choices until we weren’t even sure what we were talking about in the first place. I was about to point out to my dad that this would have been a very familiar situation to any man who had been married for any length of time but I didn’t because of feminism and hegemony and male privilege and other important things.

Things got hotter when we admitted defeat in the bluetooth setup and simply tried to get back to the main system so that we could listen to the dang radio. The robot lady would not go back. She would not go forward. all she would do is ask us to “talk” to her. Clearly, she had won the argument. all that was left for my dad and I was to talk to each other, which was actually the best part of the trip. and we reckoned that when we turned the car off, the system would reset and we could at least pop in a few Hip Cds. This is when things got nasty. We stopped for lunch, came back out and the robot lady still wouldn’t budge off the setup screen without hearing the secret password. It was then that I started wondering why the annoying, rage-inducing voice had to be a woman. Was this a ploy to make women take all the blame when dummies like me couldn’t figure things out? Would I have reacted in the same way if the robot had been voiced by James Earl Jones? before we hit the highway again, I finally figured out the secret word we needed to say. It was “go back,” which was funny because I was wishing I could “go back” to 1997, when cars didn’t talk, no one listened to donald Trump, and there was nothing tragic about The Tragically Hip.

GARBAGE

DEVELOPMENT

The Editor, What gives a municipal government the right to mandate when I have to wake up? I am a late riser. My usual routine is to go to bed around 2 a.m. and wake up around 9 a.m. On garbage collection days, I take my carts to the curb before I go to bed and have been doing this since I moved to Port Moody seven years ago. Recently, I received a ticket with a $50 fine from The Corporation of the City of Port Moody for being in violation of Bylaw 2816, which I, and I’m sure you, had never heard of. This bylaw mandates that garbage, recycling and compost carts be taken to the curb only between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m. The ticket was written by an enforcement officer obviously wandering the streets at 4:55 a.m. looking for ways to pad the municipal coffers with ridiculous fines. What difference, what harm is there in having containers on the street at 2 a.m. versus 5:30 a.m.? They are not kept inside

The Editor, On a recent visit to Prague, Czech Republic, I chose to stay in a hostel in order to make my money last longer. My hostel was outside the city core but within easy walking distance of a commuter train station. The hostel was a newly completed 10-storey tower. It was plain, outside and inside, but had all essential appurtenances, including elevators. But it did not have underground parking. As I explored the neighbourhood of low-rise towers, I saw that most of them did not have underground parking. There were a few small parking lots, no doubt with high parking fees. Further train travel allowed me to see simi-

A “late riser, the letter writer wants to know why his trash must be put at the curb between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m. on pickup days. so the “danger of animals attempting to get into them is moot and, since the containers are well locked, not possible in any event. Now, apparently, on collection days I have to get up two hours early for no good reason other than to avoid upsetting the municipal enforcers and paying more fines.

If someone can explain the rationale behind this, I might not be as mad as I am now. But I don’t think I’ll be able to buy any excuse other than some more useless bureaucrats with nothing better to do than to write up rules and regulations that justify their positions. Patrick Maguire, Port Moody

lar clusters of housing around many of the train stations. I was delighted with the common sense that led the Czechs to build low-cost housing, without underground parking, all around a commuter train station. How sensible! If a city has a good public transportation system, this type of housing will be very appealing to young people starting out in life, or anyone struggling with personal finances. Towers with no underground parking would be much cheaper to build. Low rent will allow residents to pay off loans or save money for the time when they can afford a better home and perhaps even a car. In the meantime,

residents depending on public transport will contribute to lessening traffic congestion and air pollution. So why can the Czechs erect such practical housing and we cannot? Our local city councils no doubt encourage luxurious highrise towers because they are desperate for the development cost charges they will be able to collect to help provide for the needs of the cities. Otherwise, they could use zoning regulations to insist on lowcost rental buildings, perhaps without underground parking, near the SkyTrain stations. Highrise buildings without parking would not be acceptable in other residential areas. Jane Shoemaker, Coquitlam

COQUITLAM FARMERS MARKET

Dine al fresco with Long Table Dinner Dinner features market products, proceeds will help market programs

Robinson said the Coquitlam Farmers Market is a good cause to support because the market, now in its 20th year, is a “fabulous community asset we all benefit from.”

COUGAR SPOTTED

‘Bad cat!’ in area Diane StranDBerg The Tri-CiTy News

Recent sightings of a cougar on Port Moody’s north shore has B.C. Conservation officers urging walkers and hikers in the area to stick close together and leash their dogs. Port Moody has put warnings up about the wild cat but Sgt. Todd Hunter said the animal has not been aggressive and has quickly withdrawn into the forest every time it has been seen. “There is nothing that we have that suggests that the cougar is acting aggressive or threatening,” Hunter said. Sightings have taken place in Shoreline Park and in trails around David Avenue. Hunter said people who plan to head into the outdoors should arm themselves with knowledge about cougars and other wildlife so they can be safe and more prepared to see animals in the area. “Learn about them,” Hunter said, “The more knowledge you have about them, you’re safer and the more appreciation [you’ll have] for all of our wildlife.” Hunter said the biggest problem is people walking with their dogs unleashed, leaving them vulnerable to wildlife. And he notes when a scrap involving a bear or a cougar happens, the family pet is

A cougar like this one has been seen recently on Port Moody’s north shore, prompting warnings for walkers in the area. often on the losing side. People should also walk the trails with others, make noise and keep children close. He also recommended using a walking stick and carrying a phone in case of emergency. If you do meet up with a cougar, don’t run, Hunter said, because it sparks the cougar’s attack instinct. Instead, back up slowly with arms held high. Anyone else who is around can also yell “Bad cat! Go away!” which Hunter says seems to work in sending the big cats away, it also works for bears. People shouldn’t feed deer, either, because they attract predators such as cougars and once the deer are gone, the

wild cats might turn to hunting family pets left alone outdoors. If the animals become a threat to humans, they will have to be destroyed because of the safety risk, which is the last thing conservation officers want to do, Hunter said. “It has happened but it’s not common — and the risk is low. If people did find themselves attacked by a cougar, the best thing to do is protect your head and spine, tuck your head and protect your face and neck with your shoulders and arms, and fight back.” More information about cougars is available at WildSafeBC.com dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandbergTC

and take steps to keep wildlife out.” The city has hired a new wildlife co-ordinator, Julie Kanya, replacing Drake Stevens, who retired, and she works with a dedicated team to patrol neighbourhoods seven days a week to enforce the Solid Waste Bylaw and the Wildlife and Vector Bylaw.

In addition to the $500 fines handed out this year, 1,300 warnings have been handed out since January. The city has also applied for Bear Smart status and expects to learn whether it has successfully met eligibility criteria this fall.

Pipe break cause unknown Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News

A broken water main is being blamed for flooding the intersection at Glen Drive and Johnson Street Tuesday night. The damage was discovered shortly after 9 p.m. and crews worked to contain the water and open the road overnight. By Wednesday morning, traffic was slowly flowing south and the road was fully opened by 9:30 a.m. “We have no idea what the cause was,” said Jamie Umpleby, the director of public works. “It was a water main

break… We do not know what caused the break.” Road work has been recently completed in the area but Umpleby did not say whether the construction was a factor in the damaged water main. “I can’t comment on that at this time,” he said. “There has been other work in the area as well. We are currently investigating what the cause may be.” Several media outlets reported that the rupture was caused by a sinkhole but Umpleby said that the gap under the pavement may have been created after the main burst. Water flooded the in-

tersection and flowed into a nearby underground parking garage but that there was no significant property damage, he added. “It didn’t enter the electrical room or the mechanical room,” he said. “There is some cleanup work that needs to be done. Other than that, we have not seen any significant damage.” After the break, the city told area residents they might notice discoloured drinking water and advised people to clear their water by running their bathtub or shower tap on cold until the water is clear. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

TRI-CITY LIBRARIES

Seniors, teens & games BOOKS PLUS Books Plus runs in The TriCity News each Friday to highlight programs and happenings in the Tri-Cities’ three libraries: Coquitlam Public Library, Port Moody Public Library and Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam.

COQUITLAM

Coquitlam Public Library, Dogwood Pavilion and the Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of BC will present four free workshops led by trained volunteers. Seniors may register for them all or just the ones that interest them. To reserve your spot, leave a message on the library’s registration line, 604-937-4155. These programs will be held at the library’s Poirier branch: • Healthy Eating For Seniors: Learn how to use Canada’s revised food guide and food labels to make healthy food choices. Light, healthy snacks will be served. Thursday, Aug. 18, 1 to 3 p.m. • Medication Awareness: The potential misuse of medications is a growing concern. Find out how you can talk with your doctor and pharmacist to make sure you are taking the right medications at the right time. Thursday, Aug. 18, 7 to 9 p.m. • Wills and Estate Planning: Learn about the legal rules for preparing wills in B.C., the

duties of an executor, legal terminology and pitfalls to avoid. Friday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. to noon. • Mature Driver Assessment Procedures: For a variety of reasons, RoadSafetyBC may order seniors to have their driving skills assessed at the age of 80. In this workshop, you will learn how aging may affect driving skills and how people can compensate. The BC assessment process is described in detail and you will find out how drivers can do their best in the various testing situations they may face. Friday, Aug. 19, 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.coqlibrary.ca. The City Centre branch is located at 1169 Pinetree Way and the Poirier branch at 575 Poirier St.

ugar Mountain is often overlooked by Tri-City hikers exploring the more popular areas around Buntzen Lake. Situated between Sasamat Lake and the village of Anmore, it can be considered to be a southern extension of the

Diez Vistas ridge but offering easier and quieter trails than its northern companion. This hike takes in a pleasant trip over the crest of Sugar Mountain, starting and finishing at the small parking lot at Anmore village hall, near the fire station. From the parking lot, head west on the urban trail that skirts behind the gardens of the large houses. After crossing a couple of roads, you will cross over a small stream, after which an up and down will bring you out onto Crystal Creek Drive. Following the trail over the other side for about 100 m, take the next path that branches to the right. This will soon bring you out at an intersection with a wide track. Going left would bring you out at Sasamat lake but this hike takes the northern direction upwards. After about 200 m, look out for a small trail that heads off to the right. The entrance to

At the crest of the ridge, take the branch that heads left (north), and continue following this trail along the crest of Sugar Mountain. Plenty of protein with that market produce MARKET FRESH

I

t’s the height of the market season and all is good in the garden. The corn is ready, peaches, nectarines and apricots are well underway, and pears and apples are just around the corner. Even some of the spring crops are starting to make their second appearance. It’s a great time to eat. I could go on and on about corn and how much I love it, hot and dripping with butter. I could also go on and on about peaches dripping down my chin and all over my shirt. Or better yet, what fruits I am going to choose to make my pie for the pie contests at both the PoCo and Coquitlam markets. Goodness knows there is enough to talk about. But I’m not going to chat about any of that. I want to talk about all the protein options at markets. The Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam markets have several options to choose from, giving you once again the ability to do the bulk of your

grocery shopping there. Let’s start with the obvious ones. Coquitlam Farmers Market is home to Redl’s Homegrown Beef, Forstbauer Farms Beef, Georel’s Smokehouse, Rockweld Farms Chicken, D-Original Sausage Haus and Wild West Coast Seafood. Barry and Marg Redl raise cattle near 100 Mile House, a six- or seven-hour drive away, right in the heart of the Cariboo. Apart from selling amazing beef, Barry is known for the wise and witty sayings on his sign board and the spectacular photos of the ranch. Ask him to tell you about how he raises the cattle and listen to the caring and passion he has for what he does. Redl beef is never fed grain. While not certified organic, his cattle are grass fed on free pasture and never fed antibiotics or growth hormones. Sick cattle are culled from the food chain and not sold. Try

their ground beef and I promise you won’t buy supermarket ground beef again. And if organic beef is what you want, Forstbauer Farms has that. D-Original sausages and salamis bring the best of Germany to the Tri-Cities. Pair the bratwurst with a bun from Gesundheit Bakery and you will think you are in Germany. One of our new vendors, Georel’s Smokehouse, sells bacon and smoked salmon along with a few other delights. I can attest to the quality of both the bacon and the salmon. In fact, I ordered a pound of the salmon from them and ate it in two sittings — it’s the best I have ever had. And speaking of amazing seafood, Wild West Coast has a fabulous selection of sustainable ocean treats. Ron Gorman has cultivated close relationships with the fishers from which he sources his product,

ensuring the freshest, healthiest seafood for your table. Ron can educate you as well — he has so much knowledge about the industry and is always happy to chat. If you shop at the PoCo market on Thursdays, Fresh Wild Seafood can handle your seafood needs there. I’ve talked about Rockweld Farms before. Organic chicken, SPCA certified and delicious — no more rubber chicken breasts. Of course, organic chickens make really good eggs, too. Never Say Die Farms from Pitt Meadows carry farm fresh eggs as well, and you can find them at the PoCo Farmers Market. Use all those lovely eggs to make a cheese omelette. Fresh eggs, a handful of fresh herbs and some gouda from Golden Ears Cheesecrafters will start your morning off perfectly. A gourmet grilled cheese is easy with some chipotle havarti and mango chutney from Aldergrove Jam and Preserves grilled up on brioche from A Bread Affair. It really is easy to fulfill your protein needs at market. From something as simple as a classic omelette or a perfectly grilled steak, all the way to a bouillabaisse, the two Tri-City markets have it all. M Bhatt, legendary co-founder of Aroma Indian Restaurant and Lounge, Port Moody’s leading authentic Indian dining experience, has a theory as to why so many of Aroma’s Lower Mainland customers keep coming back. “Atithi Devo Bhavah is a Sanskrit verse which simply means – consider the guest as God,” says Bhatt, who, along with partners Hardeep and Gurdeep, opened his original location of the Aroma concept in Port Coquitlam in 2003. “The saying stems from an ancient scripture in Hindi religion,” he adds. “It’s the essence of Indian culture—and it describes how we treat our customers too.” Moving to a beautiful new location in Port Moody in 2011, Aroma Indian Restaurant and Lounge really took off. “I feel strongly that by listening to people, we are making better project decisions.” - Lexa Hobenshield, External Relations Manager, Kinder Morgan Canada

For more than four years, we’ve worked together with our neighbours and local communities to hear what they have to say about our proposed pipeline expansion. By listening closely and having an open dialogue, we’ve been able to create a stronger, safer and more responsive project. We are working to meet all the requirements of the regulators, as well as consulting with communities, Indigenous people, government agencies and municipalities – and we’ll continue to work with them throughout development, construction and operations. We know how critical it is to get this right. Most importantly, we’re acting on what we hear with significant changes to the Project.

How feedback has resulted in a stronger, safer and better project: •

A $100 million investment in the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) for marine safety enhancements.

An increase in safety valves along the pipeline from 94 to 126.

An increase in pipeline wall thickness in sensitive areas, such as urban locations and at river crossings.

Routing of the pipeline to avoid 22 crossings at fish-inhabited rivers including the Fraser, upper North Thompson, Albreda, Coldwater and Coquihalla.

Routing to avoid environmentally sensitive areas, such as Cheam Wetlands and three BC Class A parks.

Routing of the pipeline to minimize community impacts to the Westsyde neighbourhood in Kamloops and the Westridge neighbourhood in Burnaby.

BCJALL FINALS

Championship reign is over for Jr. A’s But the Minto Cup run is only just beginning GARY MCKENNA

The Tri-CiTy News

The Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs’ seven-straight BCJALL championship streak had to end some day. The time came Tuesday night when the home team found themselves on the wrong side of an 11-10 score following Delta Islander Nick Jensen’s marker in double overtime assisted by Brad Hofmann. The goal finished the bestof-three championship series and added some drama heading into next week’s Minto Cup tournament, which both teams had already qualified for when they made the BCJALL finals. Jensen had been quiet for most of the series, registering just one point for Delta when he assisted on a goal in the team’s 9-6 victory in Game 1. However, his stick came alive at the right moment, and his two-goal performance on Tuesday was enough to grant him second-star honours. The score, much like the rest of the series, was close from

the beginning of the game. Tyler Pace got Coquitlam on the board with a goal assisted by Brett Kujala, but JENSEN Delta quickly responded with a goal from Jon Phillips and another from Adam Jay. Nicholas McNabb evened the score for the Jr. Adanacs and the game was tied at 2-2 going into the first intermission. Delta kicked off the second period with a three-goal run, one coming short-handed off the stick of Aidan Milburn, followed by a power play marker from Jensen and an evenstrength goal from Phillips, who finished with a hat trick and was first star of the game. However, in the second half of the middle period Coquitlam took control of the floor, with John Hofseth finding the back of the net followed by a pair of back-to-back goals from Pace and a single from Jean-Luc Chetner assisted by Dennon Armstrong. Pace scored again five minutes into the third, his fourth of the evening, to give his team a 7-5 lead. Both teams exchanged goals

throughout the final frame but the A’s hung on to their two goal lead until close to the end of the third. But with five minutes left, Delta’s Aidan Milburn potted a single followed by a tying goal from Phillips, who found the back of the net after Delta pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. In the first overtime period, Hofseth scored for Coquitlam but Delta quickly responded with a marker from Chase Fraser and things were tied 10-10 going into the second overtime. That is when Jensen finished off the A’s and sealed Delta’s first BCJALL championship in team history. Despite the loss, the A’s will still play in the Minto Cup tournament as a host team and will rematch against Delta on Aug. 22. Coquitlam will begin their championship hunt on Aug. 20 with a game against the Calgary Mountaineers at 8 p.m., followed by a match against the Orangeville Northmen on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. Minto Cup playoffs will begin on Aug. 23 and are based on where the teams finish during the round-robin games. MINOR BASEBALL

Cards take 2nd at provincials The Port Coquitlam Cardinals had a strong under-11 B.C. Provincial AA Tournament at Lionel Courchene Park in Surrey last week but came up short in the finals against the host team. After a brilliant come-frombehind victory in the semifinals against the Sunshine Coast, which included a

four-run inning in the fifth, the Cards struggled to put up runs in the championship game, where they fell 5-0 to Surrey. On their way to the finals, PoCo defeated Mission in the preliminary round 12-7 and their second-place showing among the ten teams at the tournament caps a successful

season for the club. The team is made up of Jacob Bergot, William Harding Paul, Travis Buck, Derek Devera, Ryan Sam, Marcus Lindholm, patriks Ludwig, Lucas Michaud, Cameron Markel, Katelyn Buckles, Will Reimer and Jordan Glowinkowski.
