Forthefirstfiveweeks, theylivedinanempty schoolwithdisplaced Ukrainians.Theyhadone showertoshare. There,heheardtheemotionsinthechildren’svoices. “Theyhavehardships.Their homeshavebeenblown up,”hesaid. ButwhentheH.U.G.S. workfellapart,Malchuk co-foundedanon-profit groupinCanadaand UkrainecalledH.E.R.O.— HumanitarianEmergency ResponseOperations Society—withsome H.U.G.S.members. Today,itisoneofthefew registeredcharitiesinthe Ukraine,hesaid. “Youdon’tneedtobe alargeorganizationto dothingsoverthere,”he said.“Infact,it’sbesttobe smallertogetthingsdone efficiently.” Malchuk,anAbbotsford resident,toldthe Tri-City News thathedidmissions withH.E.R.O.membersin dangerousareas. Infact,whenheleftthe countryinlateJuly,hisLvivbasedteamwas26kmfrom theZaporzhzhianuclear powerplantinsoutheastern Ukraine—thelargeststation inEuropethatisnowunder Russiancontrol.

Malchukandhisteam werestayingatamember’s condo,whichwasonthe edgeofthecityfacingeast. “Everynight,wewould watchmissilestrikeshappening,”hesaid.“Youcould seetownsburning.”

Whiledonationsofsuppliesarewelcome,cash forgasolineisespecially needed,Malchuksaid,toget theprovisionsandequipmentout.
