Shesaidofficerswere dispatchedtotheareaafterit hadreceivedseveralreports
of“concerningbehaviour” bycoyotes,includingclose approachestokids,inflicting injuriestooff-leashdogs andoutdoorcatsandeven snatchingonedogaway fromitsowner.

KenHoff,spokesperson forSchoolDistrict43(SD43), saidwhilehecouldn’tconfirmanyincidentsatthe schools,thedistrictdoes haveproceduresforwildlife encounters.
Theseincludeincreased staffmonitoringofoutside areasduringlunchand recesses,aswellasalertsto bringthechildrenindoors rightawayandshelterin placeifathreathasbeen identified.
“Wildlifeencountersare
somewhatcommonatmany ofourschoolsites,”Hoff said.
Robertsonsaidthecoyotesarelikelyattractedto theareabecauseofaneasy andabundantfoodsupply suchasunsecuredgarbage containers,outdoorcatsand unleasheddogs.
“Weallplayapartinreducingconflicts,”shesaid, addingconservationofficers areworkingwithcityofficials toidentifyothertroublesomecoyotesinthearea.

Thompson’svanisstockpiledwithsuppliesthat couldmakethedifference betweenagooddayand bad:hotchocolate,candy bars,cigarettes,feminine products,blankets,backpacks,handwarmers.
Hisroundstakehimto thesidewalks,alleyways, garagesandparksinPort CoquitlamandCoquitlam wherethehomelessmight hunkerdowntogetout oftherainorcold,orjust getsomerespitefromthe rigoursofexistence.
Inhis14monthsonthe job,Thompsonsaidhe’s learnedtoseethesignsof streetlifethatwouldotherwisebeeasytomiss:a pieceofcardboardwrapped aroundaventpipeina parkadetodirectwarmair,a twistcapfromawaterbottle withitssealcrackedsecreted inapatchofgrassforfuture usetoadministerafix.
It’snotaneasyjob, Thompsonsaid.

Nowinaboardinghouse inanestablishedPoCo neighbourhoodnexttothe CoquitlamRiver,Briansaid hewasdepressedashegave hislifeovertobooze.
Peoplelivingonthe streetsdon’thavemuch otherthantheirself-sufficiencyandindependence, Thompsonsaid.

McCutcheonsaidpolice begandoingmoreticketing alongMarinerWayaftera 13-year-oldgirlwaskilled.
Theteendiedwhenshe wasstruckastwovehicles collidedandonewentupon toamedianatMarinerWay andRiverviewCrescentin Coquitlam.

LenaChen,aneducation assistantwiththeprogram, saysthe“Pawsativity”projectishelpingthestudents learnthingslikecommunication,cooking,financialliteracyandentrepreneurship.
“It’sprovidingsupportsto helpthemconnectwiththe community,”saidChen.
“Thewholeideaistogive themahands-onexperience.”
Theprojectstartedwith abrainstormingsession amongstthe20students enrolledintheprogramto comeupwithateameffort
thatencompassedavariety ofpracticallifeskills.
AliciaWaetsaidavisit fromBrie,theschool’s therapydog,providedthe inspirationtowardhelping animals.
“Dogshelpusalotwhen we’regoingthroughabad time,”shesaid.

“Itwasgreatthekidsactuallycametoseeme,notjust sentaletter,”O’Riordansaid. “Wejustwantedtohelp.”

Workingwithstudents fromtheleadershipclass, thegroupstartedmixingup quadruplebatchesofthe doughandformedthem intohundredsofcookiesto besoldinfour-ouncebags.

Nosuspectshavebeen arrestedoraresoughtby police,whobelievethecity’s seventhknownshootingof 2022wasan“isolatedincident.”
TheIntegratedHomicide InvestigationTeam(IHIT) hasbeendeployedtowork withlocalRCMPonthecase.
Before11p.m.,Dec.8, Mountieswerecalledto reportsofashootingon LambertWaynearTurner AvenueintheHockaday neighbourhoudwestofthe CoquitlamRiver.
Awomanwasfoundinsideavehiclesufferingfrom
apparentgunshotwounds, andfirstrespondersbegan lifesavingmeasures.
However,spokesperson Cpl.AlexaHodginssaid,she diedatthesceneinjuries.
Astheinvestigationisstill initsevidence-gathering phase,Hodginsadded,,policeareaskingthepublicfor
witnessstatements,aswell asdashcam,CCTV,surveillance,cellphoneorgeneral videofootageofthearea.
Hodginsaddedvictim serviceshasalsobeenactivated.

JesseToewsisbeing chargedwithpossession ofchildpornography andusingacomputer passwordtocommitan offence.
Accordingto PortMoodyPolice Department(PMPD) spokesperson,Const. SamZacharias,the youngfemalewas contactedbyasuspect online,claimingthey possessedpassword-protectedimagesofherthat wereobtainedfroma cloud-basedplatform.
Zachariassaidthefemalewastoldunlessshe sentthesuspectmore photos,theprotected imageswouldbedistributed.Shethenreached outtopolicelastOctober andayear-longinvestigationwaslaunched.
Zachariascommendedthevictimfor callingpolice.
“Thisinvestigation wassophisticatedand technical,”hesaidina newsrelease,adding otherpotentialvictims andcompromiseddata werealsofoundbypolice.

Itiswithdeepsadnessthatweannouncethe passingofGrahamLougherathishomeinKamloops afteraheroic fightwithbloodandbonecancer.He was73.Hewasprecededindeathbyhisparents andleavesbehindhissistersJulieandCynthia(Ed) andseveralcousinsintheU.S.andoverseas.
HewasborninEureka,CaliforniaonApril16,1949 toTomandDorisLougherwhohademigratedto theU.S.fromWalesafterWWlltojoinTom’stwo brothers.In1959,whenhewasten,thefamily movedbacktoWales.Theymadeonemore movetoCanadain1967andsettledforgoodin Coquitlam,B.C.
Afterafewyearsatdifferentjobshejoinedthe CoquitlamFireDepartmentinSeptember1973and retiredafter31yearsinApril2004.Therehefound hisotherfamily;andthefriendshipshemadethere, aswellasthosebuiltthroughotherpursuitsand endeavoursthroughtheyears,sustainedhimuntil theend.Manyofthosefriends,especiallyin Kamloopshelpedhimandkeptaneyeonhim duringhislaststruggles.
Helovedhunting, fishingandbuildingthings, keepingbusy.Hehadnumeroussecondjobsor projectsoverhiscareerasa firefighter,thebiggest ofwhichwashiscabinatAdamsLake.Hebought itin1995andspenteveryspareminutehecould fixingitup.Quiterundownwhenheboughtit,he spentmanyhoursofhardworkoverthenext27 yearsrebuildingit.“Heturnedasow’searintoa silkpurse”hisneighbourRicksaid,“pouringtonsof concretethathemixedandtroweledhimself,”and overtheyearsbuildingrelationshipswithhis “Adam’sLakefamily”.Grahamwasknowntohave everytool,nut,bolt,powertoolandwhatever gadgetonemightneed.Hewasthe“rent-allofthe Bay”.Ifyouneededit,hehadit,andifhedidn’the woulddohisbesttohelpwithasolution.Hewas alwaysverygenerouswithhistime,alwaysready tositonthedeck,haveabeerandchat.“Hewas partoftheAdam’sLakeexperience.”
Grahamlovedhiscabin,itwaswherehewas happiest,hisfavouriteplaceonearth.Hewould havelivedthereyear-roundifhecould.Hewould markthedayshespentthereonacalendar,every daycounted.Hewouldsitonhisdecklooking overtheBay,justthinkingofnewideasand projectstokeephismindandbodymoving.
