NIKI JACQUES Niki Jacques knows a lot about running a business — and maybe even more about running. And each of her passions complements the other. Jaques, who manages Nufloors — a 32-year-old family business she rejoined six years ago when her father was diagnosed with dementia — is also a devoted runner and running coach (she previously founded 360 Cycle and was a Lululemon ambassador for seven years). An experienced marathoner, she runs three or four of the 26.2-mile (42-km) races each year as well as a number of gruelling 50-km trail races, which is why she can be found on weekends pounding the trails of Buntzen Lake and Burke and Eagle mountains. And if that doesn’t sound sufficiently challenging, on her agenda this year is the 10-day, 600-km Primal Quest on the Sunshine Coast. Next year — no big deal — the mother of two children who also enjoy competitive sports will take on the Mt. Everest marathon to mark her 45th birthday. Asked how her running endeavours help her in business, Jacques says: “Everything happens when I lace up that is supposed to happen. Good day or bad, I always find the answers I seek on the road or trail. This industry can be cutthroat and ugly at the best of times, and it is hard to not take things personally. Running is my meditation, my stress release. I spend many miles coming up with new business ideas and working out problems we currently face. “Like a marathon, there are tough times, tough decisions and even tougher people to deal with. You put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.” While she uses her leisure time to work out business problems, it has also taught her some lessons to add to those she learned from her father: “Everything passes. Every situation, every encounter, every moment will pass and you will get through it. That is what I tell myself.” There are also lessons in business that translate to the trail or road, Jacques says: “Never give up. Until you cross that finish line, seal the deal, get a new contract you have been working on, never give up. Like your training, control what you can, let go of what you cannot. “Perseverance and consistency are key,” she says. “Consistency is everything. Slow and steady wins the race in life, not erratic and out of control. You can’t win a marathon overnight with no training, just like you can’t be successful in business overnight. You must put in the hard work.” For Niki Jacques and Nufloors’ 17 employees, that attitude has resulted in winning performances in the day-to-day competition of running a business.President | Nufloors Coquitlam LE

CORRY STAFF

THOMA DOEHRING

Sought after speaker, Certified Financial Planner, Corry Staff is known for her fun and engaging seminars for women. Corry’s personal focus is on wealth accumulation, retirement and estate planning. She has an extensive background in assisting women going through separation and divorce. Her focus now is not only to continue to inspire financial success in others, but to also mentor and support other young woman who want to do the same. Corry has been a Member Advocis, the Financial Advisors Association of Canada since 2006 and currently sits on the Board in the Professional Conduct Chair. She is also a member of the Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC). She proudly supports the BC Women’s Hospital Foundation serving on the committee for the Glow Gala raising funds for Newborns and Moms in need of assistance.

Often times being a woman in business means working more than 9-5 when doing something you love, all the while seeking a balance between work and home. Thoma Doehring has been working this balancing act for 25 years. She is not just a business owner, she is also my mom. This year I wanted to share with you what being a woman in business meant in our household. My mom taught us that hard work will always pay off. She taught us to seek relationships over money and the business will flow from integrity and honesty. She taught us that in order to become an expert, you must love what you do. My sister and I are both well on our way to becoming experts in our fields. My mom is not just a designer; she is a design junkie. She does not just sell paint; she uses it – often repainting our front door bi-weekly. My mom is not just a woman in business; she is the greatest mother I could have asked for. Thank you all for appreciating my mom’s hard work as much as I do. Erika Doehring

As a full time Realtor® with Royal LePage and in my 20th year of selling real estate, I take pride in looking after my clients by listening and understanding their needs through every step of the Buying or Selling process. You can count on personal, attentive, patient and professional service.

29th Anniversary, Reflections Books. After many years of dedicated work and good customer service, Carole is able to step back a little from her busy store and work only two days a week.

I am most proud of my relationships with past clients and with my network of Realtors® across Canada, resulting in a large part of my business being referrals. My experience and education accreditations are some of the qualifications that make a difference. I enjoy working with First Time Buyers to Empty Nesters and everyone in between. My goal is to make lasting relationships with my clients, their families and friends.

Ordering and book-keeping are done at home. She opened Reflections with a business partner in 1988 and after buying him out nine years later, expanded with The Oasis Wellness Centre upstairs. The 1990’s were difficult for small stores like Reflections, as big box stores opened and internet buying began. However, Reflections diversified their store inventory, offered psychic readings daily and focused on serving their customers well. It has paid off and now there is a trend to ‘buy local’ and many small stores are booming again.

KATRINA SHELAST 8 years ago, a clear vision was acted on and a small boutique salon was created. Today, I am doing what I love; building meaningful relationships and giving clients the best service and experience in my ability, in an environment that is safe and healthy. I have been away from the salon a lot this past year due to multiple surgeries and treatments for a disease called Endometriosis. This is a devastating disease that affects women and every single person around us. Against all odds, my business continues to succeed and grow in my absence and I continue to be able to fight thanks to the support of my family and friends, my staff, our loyal clients and our entire community. I am so grateful to have so much love and support through this journey, thank you all.

“MY MODEL FOR BUSINESS WAS THE BEATLES: THE WHOLE WAS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF THE PARTS.” - steve jobs

I volunteer with Rotary and The Chamber because I believe that connection and giving back is an integral part of success. I pride myself on being able to positively impact peoples lives and I thrive by inspiring others to get involved and find their passion in contribution.

We will all meet many adversities in life but when you have a strong vision, a positive mind, and a little bit of courage; Everything is Possible.
