Statistics We are...
A county of farmers, coal miners, manufacturers, lawyers and lawmakers, educators, artists, musicians — athletes which include an NCAA champion — and much more! Our population countywide was 33,576 and growing in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. With nearly 13,000 households, 77 percent of us are homeowners. Our labor force is second to none, but Gibson County is always a great place to enjoy leisure time.

The average growing season is 186 days, with an average first freeze by Oct. 20 and last freeze April 16. The average annual rainfall is 43.9 inches. We’re the crossroads of America, ser ved by Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation rail systems. More than 40 interstate truck lines move through the county. uch of Brynn Blankenberger’s experience with her restaurant can be described as unexpected. The opportunity came while she was looking to get out of the business — she has a lot more family working side-by-side than she ever expected — and Broadway House Bistro was named the 2018 Gibson County Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. “I didn’t even think we would be in the running,” Blankenberger said. “There are so many other great businesses
around, so it totally took me by surprise to get that.” This is the first community award the eatery has received, but Blankenberger said it caught her off guard. “It was a very high honor,” she said. “I feel very privileged.” Blankberger moved back to Princeton in 2012, and two years later she was opening a restaurant. “I really thought Princeton needed a nice sit-down, not fancy but more upscale restaurant,” she said. “So I convinced my dad to go in with me on it.” Broadway House now has local regulars and a showing of out-of-town support from Vincennes, Jasper and
Evansville customers. “I was kind of opening to keep people local, so they didn’t have to drive to Evansville,” Blankenberger said. “So it was kind of funny that people were driving from Evansville to come up here.” Its popularity doesn’t mean the process has been easy. Blankenberger said she knew it wouldn’t be easy when she started, but it’s been harder than she ever expected. It can be hard to find good help, but right now she said the crew is pretty strong. Her role in that crew is a little different than she originally expected SEE BISTRO/PAGE 8

when she first opened, but it’s shown her she’s capable of more than she thought. “I originally opened, and I wanted to work front of the house. I’d never really cooked a whole lot,” she said. “I got thrown in the back of the house when our chef quit, and I’ve been in the back of the house ever since. I didn’t even know I could do the things that we were doing.”

Jeff Cook and daughter Brynn Blankenberger She’s found she likes to bake, more than anything else, and if there’s something someone wants baked, she’ll try. The restaurant offers catering carryout, including desserts perfect for holiday parties. As Blankenberger spends much of her time in the kitchen, her dad Jeff Cook heads up the front of the restaurant.
“He is here all day, every day,” she said. Her brother Atlee Cook moved back to Princeton in 2016 and has taken over the dinner menu and cooking at night. Her mom retired in January and handles decor and anything else that might need an extra pair of hands; hosting, serving, doing dishes.
“She is kind of a do-it-aller,” Blankenberger said. It’s turned into a family affair; something Blankenberger didn’t foresee at the start. She said she doesn’t think her dad knew his retirement would mean a lot of work. “He’s a blessing,” she said. “I wouldn’t be able to do it if he wasn’t here with me.”

lans are in motion for a new Vuteq training facility/ manufacturing center in Gibson County, which means new jobs and revenue for the Gibson County. This is one of the major reasons Vuteq was recognized as this year’s Gibson County Chamber Business Impact of the Year Award winner. Patty Vanoven, office manager for the chamber, said the award recognizes a business that has made a significant impact upon the community around it. Vanoven said with the opening of a new plant, there will be a significant increase in jobs brought to the community. Vuteq, a supplier in the automotive industry, opened its first Princeton plant near the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana plant in 2001. The company assembles instrument SEE VUTEQ/PAGE 12

Vuteq's current manufacturing facility northeast of the Toyota plant. Toyota plant, that will employ 400 people by 2022. It is intended to be Vuteq’s national headquarters for sales and training. The company has since been approved for the water and sewer needs at site on the west side of U.S. 41, bordering the north side of County Road 550 South. The water will be provided by the town of Fort Branch. The county created a new Tax Increment Finance district encompassing the Union Township property, which allows property taxes paid by Vuteq to be captured to finance projects benefitting the new TIF district. The Vuteq project is set to be done in two phases. The first is a support center and some manufacturing facility space, which will bring staff that provides management training and core trainers to the company’s sites around the United States. The infrastructure work includes sewer lines to Fort Branch’s treatment plant and extending water mains from the east side of U.S. 41 to the facility for service from Gibson Water Inc. The expansion is projected to employ 200 people by 2020 and the second phase will add 200 more employees.

s a man of few words to say about himself, Stanley Madison’s actions speak louder than words. The Lyles Station Historic Preservation Corp. founder and chairman was instrumental in making sure the African American history of Lyles Station was preserved and
helped make connections to showcase the history of Lyles Station in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Madison said the Lyles Station restoration project was truly a blessing for all of Gibson County to have a historical site. He said it’s great to know that he’s part of a big picture and involved in making it successful.
“We can see what hard work has proven to be,” he said. While handling the daily operations of the historic school and museum, Madison also served on the Gibson County Tourism Commission as vice president, Sand Hill Cemetery president, Gibson County Antique Tractor Association and other boards. With decades of volunteering experience, how many hours has Madison logged? “More than a bushel basket full,” Madison laughed. Madison said he knows that he volunteers about 30-40 hours a week, equivalent to a full-time job, at Lyles Station Historic School. He has taught thousands of children about the African American pioneer community that he grew up in and taught them about the importance of farming. He’s also come in at 7:45 a.m. to give a tour to a group of 25. Madison said he’s honored and thrilled to be chosen as the Gibson County Chamber of Commerce’s Volunteer of the year. “It’s pretty awesome, to be picked out of all people who are more Quiche Matchen/Daily Clarion deserving than I am,” Madison said. He said whether someone volunteers for a church or a business, everyone is trying to make a difference in the world day-to-day. “We’re all trying to do our part in the community,” Madison said. Madison said there a lot of dedicated volunteers in the community and without them many projects wouldn’t be possible. He said it takes teamwork to make something happen. He said volunteers, who are always involved, make the community better and the person on the sideline, who never helps out, is “missing out on a big reward.” Madison said there’s no greater feeling than helping people and organizations in need. Madison encourages others to volunteer so that it can inspire the youth to volunteer in the future. “Be the number one role model for the younger generation, who watches you.”
