garbage bag sat on the stage next to Marcia Lambert as she spoke to the crowd during the 2019 Gibson County Chamber banquet. She used the bag to help illustrate how often children in foster care arrive with nothing, or a few positions in a plastic bag. In her own experiences as a foster parent, Lambert began to wonder what would change if the children showing up in the middle of the night could already have a bag ready for them.

That thought is what sparked the idea of the Isaiah 1:17 Project, which Lambert accepted the 2019 Nonprofitof the Year award for at the banquet. The Isaiah 1:17 Project, formed in 2017, creates and distributes bags of essential items to children entering foster care in Gibson, Knox, Pike, Warrick, Vanderburgh, Posey and Spencer Counties. The organization’s new headquarters is located in downtown Princeton at 117 North Hart Street. “It is very humbling SEE ISAIAH/PAGE 8

to get up there and be acknowledged for something I feel I have ver y little to do with,” Lambert said. “God has guided us and equipped us for what needs to be done.” The name for the organization is based on the scripture found in the book of Isaiah, chapter 1, verse 17: Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. Lambert said she finds it ner ve-wracking to speak to crowds like she did while accepting the organization’s award, but said ultimately it helps raise awareness for the children and their families. In the beginning, Lambert never envisioned the Nonprofitgrowing as it has. It started ser ving Gibson

County and quickly began to work its way into other counties where the need also exists. “Things just started falling into place,” Lambert said.

Toward the start of the process, Lambert was talking to a fellow teacher at Bethel Christian School in Princeton, who said, “I guess this is forever, right?”

“I looked at her like, ‘what are you talking about?’” Lambert said, “‘We are just building a few bags.’” Each bag contains a variety of items to help make the transition for foster children and that first night easier. Contents of each bag are age-appropriate, with items like diapers, stuffed animals, coloring books, and hygiene products included. “To those kids, it’s ever ything in that moment,” Lambert said. Lambert said the bags also help the families be able to focus more on the children themselves. The Nonprofitconducts fundraisers throughout the year and also accepts donations year-round to help account for the items that fill those bags offered to children. Lambert said the community has been over whelming. “It leaves me speechless to be honest,” she said. “There’s been such support.”

hen Ivy Tech Community College received the Gibson County Chamber of Commerce award of 2019 Business of the Year, Ivy Tech Community College’s site manager and coal mining director John Snowden was in shock. He believed the reason behind the award was due to the relationships made and resources given to individuals in the community. “When the award came up, the first thing that was mentioned to me internally was it’s kind of a shocker because we’re not basing this on how much business we do or how many dollars we’re bringing in,” Snowden said. “It’s more or less how many relationships we are building with the other community partners, how we are staying relevant in the community… Ivy Tech Welding Program Chair John Durbin, right, shows Joe Williams how a welder works it amazes me how many different people at Ivy Tech Community College in Princeton during an open house. we touch because there are needs at all

different levels.” Not only does the community college offer foundation college courses, but it offers many different programs and training locally, which helps those who live in rural areas. For example, Serve Safe classes are taught at the community college in Princeton, which Snowden believes is a need for the area because individuals in the rural areas would have to travel to bigger cities like Evansville or Henderson to get the training. “When it comes back to the corporate training, we can take and manipulate and mold the training curriculum into what they need, as oppose to this is what it is cut and dry,” Snowden explained. “So, we can kind of streamline that to the exact needs of the companies.” The community college is also hosting their yearly Toyota training. Twice a year, Ivy Tech offers a two-week program on mechanical drives and rigging to Toyota maintenance employees. Through the Indiana Coal Mining Institute license plate sales, Ivy Tech’s Princeton location provided free classes for coal mining training. Between 2018-19, Ivy Tech trained 100 new underground miners from the local area at the Princeton location alone. Ivy Tech has also started providing a

S

o much was new to Jancey Smith when she started the endeavor of creating a magazine focused on Gibson County. “Small Town Living in Gibson County” wasn’t a path she’d planned for, which meant there were a lot of unknowns to account for. “I really didn’t know what to expect,” Smith said. “It

was just kind of an opportunity that fell in my lap.” Nearly four years later, the unknown path she started down led her to the 2019 Hometown Business of the Year award from the Gibson County Chamber of Commerce which she accepted in November. Smith said she was surprised when she heard the business won, but that it shows that local people like to know about local things happening around them.

Smith said the cold calls in advertising were difficult in the beginning. She remembers sitting in the parking lot of businesses convincing herself it was a bad time to approach and it would be best to come back later. “It was very stressful at first, because I was learning as I was going,” Smith said. “A lot of areas were new to me.” The focus in 2017 was to create a magazine focused on the positive aspects for Gibson County. Things to do, the nice people, the reasons people should live, work, and raise a family in the area. “I didn’t really expect it,” she said. “It was a pleasant surprise when people offered to do things.” Smith said she believes that’s one of the aspects of the magazine people like best, reading local writers. She stays busy taking photos at events around the county and keeping content in order for the next issue, but the variety is part of what Smith enjoys so much. “With any small business owner, pretty

It’s not a 9-5 where you go home when you’re done.” Smith said there’s always a different rotation and it doesn’t become boring, whether she’s making ads, designing pages,

or helping deliver the 6,000 magazines with her husband Zeke. “(I’m) very thankful for the people that helped,” Smith said. “It would be a lot to try and arrange all by yourself. I really wanted to give them as much credit as possible.”
