Conrad, star of “The Wild Wild West,” dies at 84 BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES — Rober t Conrad, the r ugged, contentious actor who starred in the hugely popular 1960s television series “Hawaiian Eye” and “The Wild Wild West,” died Saturday. He was 84. The actor died of hear t failure in Malibu, California, family spokesperson Jef f Ballard said. A small private ser vice is planned for March 1, which would have been his 85th birthday. “He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hear ts,” Ballard said. W ith his good looks and strong physique, Conrad was a rising young actor when he was chosen for the lead in “Hawaiian Eye.” He became an overnight star after the show debuted in 1959. Conrad played Tom Lopaka, a daring private investigator whose par tner was Tracy Steele, played by Anthony Eisley. They operated out of a fancy office overlooking the pool at a popular Waikiki hotel. The two private eyes alternated on simple investigations with help from the island’s color ful characters, including a singer named Cricket Blake (Connie Stevens) and a uku-

After five seasons with the s h o w, C o n r a d w e n t o n t o embrace the television craze of the time, period Westerns, but with a decidedly different twist. In “The W ild W ild West,” which debuted in 1965, he was James T. West, a James Bondlike agent who used innovative tactics and futuristic gadgets (futuristic for the 1800s anyway) to battle bizarre villains. He was ably assisted by Ross Mar tin’s Ar temus Gordon, a master of disguise. The show aired until 1969. The series “Baa Baa Black Sheep” followed in 1976 and was roughly based on an autobiography by Marine Corps ace and Medal of Honor recipient Gregor y “Pappy” Boyington, who wrote of the raucous fliers he commanded during World War II. Conrad played Pappy Boyington, so nicknamed because he often rescued his pilots from severe punishment. Bringing his customar y intensity to the role, he even learned to fly. The NBC series was enjoyed by male viewers but not so much by women and it was dropped after its first season. It was revived in December 1977 as “Black Sheep Squadron,” after the network’s new shows

Rodeo clown Harris dead at 83 Hoffa associate who was suspect in disappearance dies BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Charles “Chuckie” O’Brien, a longtime associate of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa who became a leading suspect in the labor leader’s disappearance and later was portrayed in the Mar tin Scorsese film “The Irishman,” has died. O’Brien’s stepson, Har vard Law School professor Jack Goldsmith, said in a blog post that O’Brien died Thursday in Boca Raton, Florida, from what appeared to be a heart attack. He was 86. O’Brien was a constant companion to Hof fa in the decades when the labor leader developed the Teamsters into one of the largest and most powerful unions in the nation in the from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. After Hof fa’s still-unsolved disappearance in 1975, O’Brien became a leading suspect when the federal gover nment publicly accused him of picking
up Hoffa and driving him to his death. Goldsmith called the accusation untr ue. “But practically ever yone believed it,” he said. FBI agents questioned O’Brien about the death at least a dozen times. In an inter view with The Associated Press in 2006, O’Brien denied having anything to do with Hof fa’s disappearance and said he didn’t think the myster y of his death would ever be solved. O’Brien said he viewed Hof fa as a father figure. He was a child when Hof fa took him in, along with his mother. “It’s ver y frustrating. I have so much inside, my love for him and his family,” O’Brien said. Hof fa was Teamsters president from 1957 to 1971. The FBI has said his disappearance was probably connected to his attempts to regain power in the union. It was known that Hof fa intended to testify before the special U.S. Sen-
ate investigative panel, known as the Chur ch Committee, about Mafia involvement in U.S.backed plots to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro, O’Brien told the AP. O’Brien was bor n in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1933. As a young child, he moved to Detroit with his mother after his father abandoned the family, and O’Brien’s mother became friends with the Hof fa family. When Hof fa became president of the union, O’Brien became his special assistant at age 23, according to Goldsmith. “They were so close, and Hoffa treated Chuckie with such af fection, that many people thought Hof fa was his biological father,” Goldsmith said. In the 2019 Scorsese film, O’Brien was portrayed by actor Jesse Plemons. O’Brien is sur vived by his wife, Brenda, a daughter and four sons and stepsons.

Koch, low-profile Koch brother, dies at 86 BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK — Frederick Koch, who kept a low profile as an arts benefactor rather than joining the family oil business that became Koch Industries, has died, according to the New York Times. He was 86. His friend and longtime assistant John Olsen told the Times Koch died at his Manhattan home on Wednesday of heart failure. Koch was the oldest of four sons of Fred Koch of Wichita, Kansas. His high profile billionaire younger brothers, Charles and David, ran Koch Industries and bankrolled liber tarian causes, but Frederick rarely saw them and preferred to live in relative anonymity, according to the Times. Koch used his share of the family wealth to support a career as a benefac-
tor of the arts and historic preservation. He amassed extensive collections of rare books, musical manuscripts and fine and decorative arts, including Marie Antoinette’s canopied bed. His collection of manor houses included a 150-room castle in Austria once owned by Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which Koch used for decades as a summer retreat. In 1986, Koch stood beside Queen Elizabeth II at the opening of the new $2.8 million Swan Theater he had built for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in England. The queen thanked the “generous benefactor” but didn’t name him, respecting his wish for privacy. Olsen said Koch’s entire estate will be used to establish a foundation to promote the study of literature, histor y and the arts.
