PHILLIP PHILBECK
Born in 1968, Philbeck grew up in rural Cleveland County, North Carolina. He now resides just across the line in the foothills of Rutherford County. There hasn’t been a time when he didn’t paint. The surroundings in which he grew up are frequent subjects for his paintings. Among his favorites are grand mountain landscapes and views with farms, streams, ponds, coastal scenes or anything with which he feels an emotional attachment. Though he’s known for the skill with which he carries out all aspects of his work, he is particularly noted for the profusion of details throughout his skies. “The sky sets the basic tone for my landscapes”, he adds. A skill which separates him from most artists is his attention to specific details and staying away from a generic look. He favors differentiating between types of shape and texture of objects in his paintings such as different species of trees or cloud formations. “The texture of oak leaves is different from a persimmon at a distance. Also in winter, the bare limbs have a character all their own. Springtime is also wonderful to contrast the differing buds such as the differing character between the muted greenish brown of the pin oak and the pale cool green of the white oak. I also like the textures of snow,
from fresh new fallen snow to snow that has been trampled down a bit from people and animals going through it.” Though he loves realism with an intimate and nostalgic look , Philbeck has a tendency towards the romantic Hudson River School of Art by bathing his scenes in a dramatic light and atmosphere. As for his preferred medium, oil has always been his number one choice though he sometimes does work in gouache and acrylic.
The Art Shop and NC Fine Art and Gifts has many original works by Phillip Philbeck. 3900 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC, 336-8558500, www.artshopnc.com

RETURNS By Timothy G Beeman II
THE BIG EAT has been a downtown Winston-Salem staple for the last few years. When it looked like it was going to end, Piedmont Local Magazine stepped in and continued the tradition. You may ask, what is The Big Eat? The Big Eat is a collective of restaurants in downtown WinstonSalem where participating restaurants take signature menu items, reduced up to 50% off regular price, to highlight and showcase what the culinary scene downtown is all about. You may have heard about a certain restaurant but haven’t ever eaten there. You don’t know if you’ll like it. You don’t know if the food of that restaurant is priced right for your budget. The Big Eat offers you the opportunity to try it and see if it’s for you. Or, perhaps, there’s a restaurant that you
are familiar with but you’ve never gotten that one menu item as you didn’t know if you’d like it. Well, that particular item so happens to be on The Big Eat menu and here’s your chance to try something you haven’t. Then there’s the scenario where you don’t know about going downtown. You’ve wanted to, but haven’t had the opportunity. What’s down there? What will I like? Again, The Big Eat has you covered. Not all of the downtown restaurants are participating, however. Some of those that are participating include Spring House Restaurant, Kitchen & Bar, Jeffrey Adams on Fourth, The Old Fourth Street Filling Station and 6th & Vine. The list will grow as the time inches closer.

: Consigning the Personal Way
By Timothy G Beeman II
Lynn Booker opened her consignment shop, Yours Truly, almost 27 years ago. It was initially a place to help new mothers find clothing for their children. Lynn, had three young children at the time. She started in the Old Town Shopping Center, opening two more locations over time, running them all until her husband was transferred. She continued to operate two of the stores while commuting to and from Wilmington. She spent about 5 years doing that drive, pulling a week’s shift at a time. Time passed and she closed another of the stores and moved from Gordon Manor on Country Club Road to the current location, a lovely little shop at 835 Reynolda
Road, in 2012. In the time’s passing, she switched her focus. Gone were the children’s clothing. She then aimed for more fashion trendy things for women. In her words, “we carry things that make women beautiful: shoes, accessories, clothing and so on.” The store has become more than just a clothing store, more than a consignment store, it’s become a destination. Women come and have a social experience. Many have been regulars of Yours Truly since it started way back in Old Town Shopping Center. It’s comfortable and welcoming. Some are consigning, some are purchasing, some are doing both. Perhaps Lynn is

BULL CITY CIDERWORKS From Tim: Bull City Ciderworks started in Durham (hence the name) but moved their operations to Lexington, NC and started fermenting apple juice in March of 2016. They’re opening an “Exploratorium” in Durham in 2017. They use premium apple juice and all natural ingredients, like gluten-free yeast, honey, black tea and tart cherries, just to name a few, in their ciders. They have seasonal ciders from Christmas to fall to spring and they have a few mainstays that are always available. We had Ryan and John on The Less Desirables a few weeks back and they brought TEN of their ciders with them for us to sample. Man, that was good stuff and I don’t even like cider. I would drink any and all of them. Their flagship cider is called “Off Main” which, according to them is the perfect blend of local apples, gluten-free yeast and awesome. It was the perfect cider if that’s what you’re looking for. My personal favorite, though, was the “Sweet Carolina” which was infused with honey. My last name is Beeman and bees love honey. You can find many of their ciders in local restaurants and bottle shops. Check out Bull City Ciderworks yourself. They have 16 taps with cider and beers always flowing! Board games, cornhole, live music, community events and HD televisions. Well behaved children and friendly dogs are welcome. Please contact Taproom@bullcityciderworks.com for information about scheduling events, reserving space, or general questions. Enter through gates on Railroad Street. Look for the loading dock painted bright red and park to the left and right. Feel free to bring your own eats! TOURS HELD ON SATURDAYS AT 3PM! 599 S Railroad St. Lexington, NC www.bullcityciderworks.com

hemming a piece someone purchased just yesterday. It’s all happening at Yours Truly. But, wait, there’s more. When Lynn moved into the new location, she had extra space in the basement; even more retail space. So, she then added a home décor and furniture aspect to her business. You’ll find antiques, new pieces and odd pieces. There’s couches, bar stools, easy chairs and step stools. Lynn attends auctions and estate sales to fill her home décor store. Some of the wares are consignment pieces, just as the upstairs apparel store. There’s even new and used furniture market samples from the High Point market. There are handmade items in the décor store as well. There’s a collection of pottery items from Blake Kennedy, who happens to be Lynn’s son. But, he’s not the only family member that contributes to the shop. Her 88 year old father, Douglas Norman, is a master craftsman woodworker and makes some of the furniture and fixtures you’ll find for sale. There’s a very nice corner hutch that he made, for sale right now. Part of the charm of the downstairs is that you don’t know what’s going to be available. Lynn doesn’t go out looking for anything in particular. She said, “I don’t cater to any specifics; just what is available.” That means you should visit frequently because the stock will rotate and you may miss the piece you’ve been missing if you don’t go exploring the basement of Yours Truly. Still, Lynn says that the apparel store is about 85% of her business and is still the focus. However, there’s a lot to experience and be part of at Yours Truly. You can visit, shop, consign and take home that perfect accessory or piece of furniture, all in one location. Visit Lynn and see for yourself. Yours Truly is located at 835 Reynolda Road, Monday through Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm. You can call 336-659-9100.
