KELLY POLLARD
Acrylic Paint Artist By Gary Jacques
Kelly Pollard, an interior designer in Memphis for 17 years, has found a home for her paintings at Carolina Greene Marketplace in Greensboro. Kelly developed her craft by fulfilling a need for interesting and unique art for her clients. She first started selling her paintings to clients at her Memphis design store, and grew her business from there. Her art is whimsical and fun. Kelly describes her paintings as “perfectly imperfect.” Self-taught, she focuses on Southern subjects such as churches, barns, and flowers. She paints with a pallet knife technique, using acrylic paint. Kelly’s creative flair has always provided inspiration. Kelly is flexible to whatever clients want. “My art is fun and colorful. I enjoy creating something from nothing. This fulfills my creative streak. In the end, you have something special for people.” Kelly’s paintings are also featured at Au-
brey Home on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro and soon will be highlighted at Summerfield Market. She moved to Greensboro in 2016 and recently met Carolina Greene Marketplace CoOwner Cathy Isom. This has provided a new outlet for Kelly’s
creative endeavors. Cathy Isom and Daryl Morelli are partners at Carolina Greene Marketplace. Cathy and Daryl met while exhibiting their work at various shows. They requested to have their booths together and saw the possibility of combining their talents in business. Cathy and Daryl first started showing as Carolina Greene Marketplace at the Chartreuse Barn Sale, which is held the first Thursday-Saturday each month in Thomasville. From this exciting beginning, Carolina Greene Marketplace opened their doors in downtown Greensboro in August of 2016.

Carolina Greene Marketplace promotes local artists and features garden decor, painted furniture to bring new life to old finds, wind chimes, hand-poured soy candles, vintage pieces, as well as many other home décor items. They also sell items from Able Earth Clay Creations, which is an organization within the ARC of Greensboro. It is for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. They create items from clay such as wind chimes, wall flowers, plant pots, plant stakes, and more. 75% of the proceeds go back to support the program. Daryl makes beautiful rustic trays, a signature piece in the shop. Daryl developed a brand called Scents Home, creating soy candles, lavender spray, home remedies, furniture food, and Remove It, an all-natural product eliminating all sticky materials. Selling Your Estate the Right Way By Timothy G. Beeman II
Larry Laster and his son Ryan opened Laster’s Fine Art & Antiques on Stratford Road in July 2011. Laster’s have made a name in the estate settlement business by working with attorneys, executors, administrators, heirs, individuals and families in whatever services they need to implement the task. Considering being open for only six years, however, the Lasters aren’t new to the business. Larry has been selling antiques since 1973. He had interests in furniture design and planned on going to school to act on his interest. Antiques were just a side business. At 16 years old, he and a friend were driving around picking up glass bottles to turn in for the bottle deposit. The friends came across a pair of old chairs that
an older couple had left in their yard. The couple agreed to give the chairs to Larry and his pal, free of charge. They took the chairs to an antique store that Larry was familiar with and the store gave them $50 for them. In the 1960s, that was a lot of money.

Larry figured it was quicker to find and flip antiques than it was to collect bottles. Ryan graduated from Appalachian State University in 2010 with a degree in audio/ video production but found it difficult to find a well-paying gig in that profession. So, he started working for his father, and together they operate the store. Even though he now works with his father, he has been helping in the family business since he was old enough to understand the workings of the industry. Laster’s Fine Art & Antiques is always on the lookout for fine art, paintings, sculptures, prints, old photographs (1950s and before), fine antiques and high-quality furniture in ready-to-use condition. But, they also deal with other collectibles such as Sterling silver flatware, serving pieces,
candlesticks, coins, early paper money collections, rare books, leather-bound books, old world maps and atlases, Civil War and older memorabilia and older documents, just to name a few of the items they buy, sell and consign. Laster’s offers verbal estimates and appraisals. They are experts in the things they sell and will give you an accurate market price. Ryan and Larry are honest with you about the value of your prized belongings. Ryan says that one of the favorite aspects of this business, to him, is seeing people come back, happy with their newfound treasures and expressing as much. The satisfied customers that actually come into the store to tell them how delighted they are. That is more satisfying to him than any Continued on page 28 18 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

NEW BELGIUM’S DAYBLAZER EASYGOING ALE From Tim: Ever since New Belgium opened shop in Asheville, they’ve been flooding the market here in the Triad with one great brew after the other. This week, we’re doing something a bit out of the norm for New Belgium, and well, me, too.
The Dayblazer Easygoing Ale is New Belgium’s answer to light beer. It has a light golden color that looks like a wheat field flowing in the distance. The taste is very light but surprisingly flavorful. You get hints of wheat, malt, hops and oddly enough, honey. It really is a near-perfect mix of hoppy, fruity goodness. Neither the malts nor hops win out, here. It’s truly a balance. It’s only 4.8% ABV, so it’s easy to “session,” meaning you can have several in a session and not be buzzed. Of course, that could be dangerous, so drink responsibly. We haven’t had this on The Less Desirables but we did have it on our sister show, The Beer Dads (thebeerdadspodcast.com) and one of my business partners took it to the beach with him and it is now not only his new beach beer, but his new Summer brew. If you’re looking for something light but don’t want macro crap, give this beer a try. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I rate it 4.25 pints out of 5! Spencer Davis is owner of his family’s company, City Beverage, which has been selling fine beer and wine since 1946. They’re located at 915 Burke Street in Winston-Salem and on the web at www.citybeverage.com. Tim Beeman is co-owner, co-host and producer of The Less Desirables Podcast and The Less Desirables Podcast Network ft. The Less Desirables, Fan Interference, The Beer Dads, The Man Who Ate the Town and Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking podcasts. Find out more on the TLD Network page, www.tldpodnetwork.com.
