Tre Nonne:
Italian Gem of the Triad By Sarah K Wilson
Tre Nonne continues to wow the triad with authentic, made from scratch italian dishes, just like the owner’s grandma would serve. Nestled into a complex at 177 Jonestown road, the Marescas proudly stay true to their Italian roots, bringing the triad fresh homemade pasta- a true labor of love. The sauces and dishes are made in house, the Sunday gravy alone takes six to eight hours to perfect. Sunday gravy is a slow cooked tomato sauce served along homemade meatballs, sausage, and of course, the fresh made pasta. Tre Nonne always goes the extra mile, offering a rewards program with great discounts, along with catering options to bring authentic Italian flair to any occasion. The owners believe in serving up the best, because they see the Triad as family. They even have their motto “Come as friends, leave as family painted on the wall of their relaxed, aromatic dining room. The restaurant has added several new wines to the menu, alongside a full bar featuring seasonal drinks like the famous
apple cinnamon shots, along with many other signature craft cocktails. For those who are interested in trying multiple wines, a wine flight is a sure-fire way to sample many different wines from a variety of different regions. The flights are offered at half price on Tuesday through Thursday, on Tuesday there are four different wines at $4 a glass to choose from, and Wine Down Wednesday is half priced bottles! Tre Nonne also hosts monthly wine dinners that are thoughtfully paired to perfection. Charity wine dinners are held biyearly, where a portion of the proceeds go to autism awareness and anti-bullying causes. Tre Nonne cares about the community, which is why the quality and authenticity of their food will never be compromised. Stay tuned to find out what dish Tre Nonne will offer half price for the Big Eat Event! TreNonneitalianrestaurant

The Big Eat and
Mac & Cheese Cook-off LIST OF PARTICIPATING
Restaurants & Entrées Offered! By Timothy G. Beeman II
DOWNTOWN WINSTON-SALEM DATES Tuesday evenings, January 8 - February 12, 2019. GREENSBORO & OTHER LOCATIONS Tuesday evenings, February 5 - February 26, 2019. Support your locally owned restaurants, learn about the restaurants and enjoy their wares. he Big Eat has been a downtown Winston-Salem staple for the last few years. When it looked like it was going to end, Piedmont Local Magazine stepped in and continued the tradition. You may ask, what is The Big Eat? The Big Eat is a collective of restaurants in downtown WinstonSalem where participating restaurants take signature menu items, reduced up to 50% off regular price, to highlight and showcase what the culinary scene downtown is all about. For the second time, there will be an added bonus! On March 2nd (1p-6p) there will be the Big Sip Beverage Festival / Mac & Cheese Cook-Off at the Millennium Center, where many of the Big Eat participating restaurants will compete for who has the best Mac and Cheese in the Piedmont, plus live music. In addition, there will be

craft beverage tastings from local breweries, wineries, and distilleries, including Old Nick Distillery, Foothills Brewing, Fiddlin Fish, and many more. You may have heard about a certain restaurant but haven’t ever eaten there. You don’t know if you’ll like it. You don’t know if the food of that restaurant is priced right for your budget. The Big Eat offers you the opportunity to try it and see if it’s for you. Or, perhaps, there’s a restaurant that you are familiar with but you’ve never gotten that one menu item as you didn’t know if you’d like it. Well, that particular item so happens to be on The Big Eat menu and here’s your chance to try something you haven’t. Then there’s the scenario where you don’t know about going downtown. You’ve wanted to, but haven’t had the opportunity. What’s down there? What will I like? Again, The Big Eat has you covered. Not all of the downtown restaurants are participating, however. Some of those that are participating include Bernardin’s, Jeffrey Adams on Fourth, The Old Fourth Street Filling Station, and 6th & Vine. The list will grow as the time inches closer. Some of last year’s specials include, from Hutch & Harris- a Slugger’s Steak Pasta: beef tenderloin tips, lightly dusted with blackening spice, then tossed with fresh spinach and tender fettuccini in a Cajun alfredo sauce for $8.99. From Spring House- Fred Flintstone’s Pork Shank with Savannah Inspired Red Rice, Lemon Parsley and Dijon Bread Crumbs, House Pepper Jelly for $12. From 6th & Vine- Blackened Chicken Pasta: Blackened Chicken over fettuccini with a bacon basil Alfredo sauce for $8.99. These are only examples and do not necessarily reflect this year’s specials or participants. Keep an eye on the events’ website, bigeatnc.com, for more info and additions to the list. Also, it is highly recom-

J. Timber... Jack-of-all-Trades Greensboro has talented individuals, artists, actors, and musicians. One man in particular happens to be a jack-ofall-trades. Jonathan Ricardo Timber, otherwise known as J Timber, is a shining star that’s put in years of work in the local music scene here in the triad. Not only has he performed 280 shows in 2018, he can be seen hosting open mic nights at venues like Smith and Edge, which has seen quite the increase in local talent. JT says “Open mic started back in November of 2017, and in the beginning it was pretty much just me. Over time, we’ve built a crowd, and now have up to 30 people perform every Monday starting at 9:15pm. I wanted to create an atmosphere for artists to come
in and be creative, like what Joel Henry and House of Fools did for me when I was coming up”. I asked what JT has in store for 2019, and it’s looking like the J Timber brand will continue to grow in the New Year. “2018 has been a building year for me in my career. I released a new single, started working on my acting and improve skills, and started modeling for Continued on page 14

J. TIMBER Continued from Page 12
Locke Management. In 2019 I’m rebranding a little bit and am more focused than ever. I’m trying to be like Tom Brady, you can never count that dude out.” J Timber has a song that’s going to be featured on an upcoming United Way album, where the proceeds are going to be used to help end poverty. When you’re in town, you can see JT and Joel Henry perform together as The Goodwatts at venues like The Speakeasy Tavern, Joymongers, McGee Street, and other local taverns and clubs. To avoid confusion between his cover band, and his full band with originals, he’ll be performing under J Timber for full band with originals, and The Goodwatts when playing covers. Whether if he’s playing originals or covers,
you’re in for a treat from someone who brings it during every set, and reps the 336 like nobody I’ve ever seen. J Timber Links:

Better the Second Time Around By Zak DeBeaussaert Photos V. Khouri - Carolina Thunderbirds
When the Carolina Thunderbirds arrived in town to bring professional hockey back to the Piedmont Triad last season, they were met with an incredible amount of fan support that saw the team break the league’s attendance record and secure a playoff berth in their inaugural season. Now in year two, the Thunderbirds are thriving, competing for a championship, and becoming a bigger player in the community every day. As of this writing, the Thunderbirds have never relinquished first place in the 201819 standings and feature crowds at their home games that are exceeding last year’s record-breaking numbers. The Thunderbirds have won 13 of their 17 games this season to remain atop the FHL standings and have a double-digit lead over their closest competition. Their average attendance this season is close to 2,500 a night. While the early success has been great, the team is focused on turning that into long-term sustainability. “I think the biggest factor of our success 16 |
is we have players that came back from last year and the new players are buying in and playing for each other,” head coach Andre Niec said. “We have players from all around the world, every player brings something special to the team and I think that’s why we’re successful. When I look at this team, they are brothers that stick together.” The Thunderbirds are led by their Captain Josh Pietrantonio who, as of games played before December 21, leads the team in points and is a co-leader in goals scored this season. Pietrantonio has history with Niec playing alongside him when the two were part of a team in Berlin, NH before Niec transitioned into his current role as a head coach. “Playing for Andre in Berlin allowed us to build a lot of chemistry and it’s transitioned over here [in Winston-Salem]. We’re all invested and bought in to the system and it’s produced a winning culture and onice product this season.” Pietrantonio said. “With a new team, you have to do a lot of promo stuff in the community and there’s a lot that goes into every game before we hit

the ice, but it pays off when we play in front of a full barn and that’s fun for everyone, fans and players.” Pietrantonio, who also serves as Niec’s assistant coach, is also the franchise leader in assists and points as a Thunderbird to this point in the franchise’s existence. He has been a key cog in shaping the Thunderbirds culture into something fans can appreciate and cheer for on any given night.

It’s one thing for a team to be successful on the ice and compete for championships, but the team’s sustainability as a franchise is aided by the work of everyone off the ice. “We’ve invested a lot in the community, in terms of our advertising and partnerships, and I think it was important for us to ingrain ourselves in the community and that’s what we’ve done right to help get the Thunderbirds name out there” ThunderContinued on page 20

birds President and GM Scott Brand said. The Thunderbirds engage in the community in many ways to not only bring fans into the games but to show that they are a key member of the community and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Whether it be holiday parades, City festivals, school appearances, or just a casual meal in town, the Thunderbirds are becoming bigger in the community every single day and fans are beginning to take notice. The Thunderbirds are one of the only teams in the lower minor levels of pro hockey to have their own radio flagship station (WTOB, 980AM/96.3 FM in Winston-Salem) and they are the only team in the league to have a TV deal to broadcast all their games on tape delay (WSTV Tuesday-Thursday nights). With both traditional and social media coverage there are more ways than your typical minor league hockey team to follow along as the Thunderbirds chase their first Commissioner’s Cup in the FHL. The Thunderbirds are a great asset to the community and the low-cost family-friendly entertainment they provide is always a good time whether it’s your first hockey game or your hundredth.
