Hoots Beer Co. CELEBRATES FOUR YEARS By Timothy G. Beeman II

If you’ve stepped foot on the property at the West End Millworks in the West End of Winston-Salem in the last 4 years, then you are already aware of Hoots Beer Co. Hoots Beer Co. was developed by friends Eric Swaim and Eric Weyer, both who grew up in Winston Salem. With co-founder Ralph Pritts, they hand built the bar and brewery with salvaged materials and help from their friends. Having a background in music and playing in touring bands, the guys put their small business know-how and ability to use to make miracles happen with little to no capital. They fundraised money through private investors, a city loan and a successful Kickstarter campaign. No big banks or deep pockets - just community and sweat. Brew master Dave McClure has been with the brewery since the first brew and is a beer-making genius. You can taste that in his craft. The brewed staples: Hoot’s ESB (extra special bitters), which I call Eric Swaim Beer, the Wheel Bite Wheat, Gashopper IPA (named after the GashopContinued on page 18 16 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

HOOTS

per filling station next door) and a few varieties with the name Zinzendorf, are always sure to quench the thirst you have and bring a smile to your face. But, it’s not just about the beer at Hoots. Tim Nolan, the bar manager, is a cocktail whisperer and carefully puts the “craft” in craft cocktails. Add to that games, pinball machines, videos on the big screen and that hand built bar with portholes and a diver’s helmet and you have an experience. But, truly, the beer is the star here. On September 30, Hoots Beer Co. will be celebrating their 4th anniversary, including the 4th Annual Hoots Oktoberfest Celebration. This is an all-day festival celebrating the greater Winston Salem community and the coming of the fall season. There will be live music, food trucks, craft vendors, games, a dunking booth, raffle prizes, contests, brewery tours, distillery tours and of course the release of the 4th annual Zinzendorf Oktoberfest. This is Oktoberfest season, after all. The Beer Dads Podcast will also be there to do a “live remote recording.” It will be fun. You get to taste this year’s Zinzendorf Oktoberfest, have great food, dunk a brewery owner or two and celebrate this great neighborhood institution. The party is September 30th from noon until midnight. Plenty of time to get your responsible drink on. You can find Hoots at 840 Millworks Street in the West End, just off of Northwest Blvd. You can find them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Their website is hootspublic.com. 18 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

Mystic Dragon Cider

by Appalachian Mountain Brewery & Cidery

By Timothy G. Beeman II

Appalachian Mountain Brewing Company make some good brews. They also are in the class of “giving back.” AMB distribute their beers in cans and kegs. With every can (and select pints) sold, you are giving back to a non-profit or charity through AMB’s “Pints for Non-Profits” program. A portion of your pint purchase goes toward select non-profit organizations. AMB also maintains sustainability standards at its brewery. Solar panels, a rain garden, grain exchange in which spent grains are donated to local farmers for feed, and a covered bike barn at the tasting room to facilitate alternative transportation. On top of all that, they make pretty sound beer and ciders. We haven’t yet had this brew on The Less Desirables, but we have had it on The Beer Dads. According to their website, this apple based cider is infused with green tea, rhubarb, and strawberries to give it a mysterious sweetness while drying it out 20 | Detailed event information available at www.336events.com

slightly. It’s a beautifully delicate and tasty cider with a delicious rhubarb/ strawberry profile while still letting the apples shine. It’s very easy to drink and only 5% ABV. If you’re not careful, you can go through a few quickly. I rate this beer/cider 4.75 pints out of 5. Drink responsibly. “We can so you can” - AMB
