THE LUCKY SEASON / 2013 – 2014 The theater is a superstitious place. In a live art form where so much can go so terribly wrong, most actors have their own rites and rituals to hopefully placate the theater spirits and guarantee a good performance. And there are — of course — numerous rules that every artist knows. You never say the name of Shakespeare’s Scottish play inside a theater. You never whistle. Peacock feathers are forbidden. You never wish a performer “good luck.” And a light must always be left on in an empty theater. Fortunately, with so many superstitions guiding our behavior, theater artists have the great benefit that what is considered unlucky outside a theater is lucky inside. Walk under ladders and open your umbrellas, and nothing bad will ever happen. And since that is true, Triad Stage is thrilled to invite you to season 13. If you’re one of those people who avoid the dreaded number on Fridays, elevators or planes, you’ll be just fine as we welcome you to our luckiest season yet. Triad Stage began as a dream... Co-founders Preston Lane and Richard Whittington forged their artistic partnership as graduate students at the Yale School of Drama. After managing a theater in Connecticut for two years, they undertook the three-year task of opening their own theater in the heart of historic Greensboro. In September 1999, Triad Stage purchased the former Montgomery Ward building, which had been built in 1936 and sat vacant for almost 40 years. Renovations transformed the five-story building into a world-class theater center now called The Pyrle Theater, complete with a 300-seat theater and thrust stage, rehearsal hall, offices, two spacious lobbies and other audience amenities. The Grand Opening took place in January 2002 with Tennessee Williams’ modern classic Suddenly Last Summer.

In 2008, Triad Stage finished a second round of renovations to The Pyrle. A scene shop annex was added in the basement. The top floor underwent major construction to create the 90-seat UpStage Cabaret performance space, the Sloan Rehearsal Hall, and the studio and office facilities of WUNC Public Radio’s new Greensboro Bureau. In 2011, Triad Stage purchased a 30,000 square foot building near the Greensboro Coliseum Complex to serve as the theater’s new production facility, relocating its scene, costume and properties shops as well as its warehouse. In 2013, with significant support from The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, Triad Stage announced a major expansion of programming to be produced at the Hanesbrands Theatre in downtown Winston-Salem.

Now in its 13th season, Triad Stage has over 3,000 Season Passholders and more than 400 annual donors. Triad Stage Co-Founders Richard Whittington (Managing Director/CoFounder) has served as Managing Director of Triad Stage since its inception. Rich earned an MFA in Theatre Management from the Yale School of Drama and has a BFA in Acting and Directing from Marymount Manhattan College.

Preston Lane (Artistic Director/Co-Founder) is in his 13th season at Triad Stage where he has directed over 35 productions. Preston is the recipient of the 2008 Betty Cone Medal of the Arts and is in his fourth year as the Artistic Partner for Theatre for An Appalachian Summer Festival. He was formerly Artistic Associate at the Dallas Theater Center, where his productions included the US premiere of Inexpressible Island (Dallas Observer Best of Dallas Awards: Best Director, Best Production) and The Night of the Iguana (Dallas Morning News: 2002 Top Ten Theatre List).

In 2007, Rich was appointed by the Governor to serve on the board of the NC Arts Council, where he is currently a member of the Executive Committee. He has previously served on the boards of ArtsNC and Downtown Greensboro, Inc. and has served on numerous grant panels throughout the state as well as for the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

As a playwright, Preston’s adaptations have been produced at Triad Stage, Dallas Theater Center and Sonoma Rep. His work with musician Laurelyn Dossett includes Brother Wolf (Triad Stage, An Appalachian Summer Festival, The Human Race Theatre Company and St. Olaf College), Beautiful Star (Triad Stage and WaterTower Theatre), Bloody Blackbeard, Providence Gap and Snow Queen. Preston is a recipient of an NC Arts Council Playwright Fellowship.

Rich has taught Theatre Management at Greensboro College and NC A&T University and has guest lectured at UNC Chapel Hill, UNC School of the Arts, Wake Forest University and UNCG. A native of Dallas, Texas, Rich previously served as Artistic Administrator for the Dallas Theater Center and Associate Producer of Dallas’ The Big D Festival of the Unexpected. Experience also includes work at the Roundabout Theatre in New York and StageWest in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Preston has taught at UNCG, NC A&T, UNCSA, Greensboro College, SMU, and the Professional Actors Workshop at the Dallas Theater Center. He is an alumnus of the Drama League of New York’s Director’s Project. A native of Boone, NC, Preston received his BFA from UNCSA and his MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

In 2010, Preston and Rich were honored with Downtown Greensboro, Inc.’s J. Edward Kitchen Leadership Award. In 2013, they received the Adelaide F. Holderness/H. Michael Weaver Award from UNCG for distinguished public service.

THTR 232 is the annual summer collaboration between Triad Stage and UNCG’s theatre department. It began in 2006 as a new incarnation of UNCG’s Summer Repertory Program which was founded in 1947. This program is a demanding, comprehensive summer of work for its participants, which include graduate and undergraduate performance and design students. Each student has the opportunity and responsibility for in-depth work on multiple productions in a professional setting, outside of the clasroom environment. Over the past nine seasons, the program has changed and evolved with the needs of each specific class of students — performing on the MainStage and in The UpStage Cabaret at Triad Stage and at Taylor Theatre and Brown Theatre at UNCG.

While all may not eventually end well for the reputation of the Shakespearean play you are about to experience, all certainly seems to be going in the right direction. The late 20th and early 21st century have rediscovered All’s Well that Ends Well so that now this “problem play” so hated and censored by the prudish Victorians has been embraced as one of Shakespeare’s most modern and complex tales. It’s easy to see why a Shakespeare industry desperate to promote British moral and cultural superiority in a colonial world would turn up its nose at the tale of a woman who will stop at nothing to get the man she loves. This isn’t a play of high tragedy. Nor is it a comedy of charming fairies and lovers run wild in the woods. All’s Well that Ends Well is surprisingly modern, unexpectedly feminist and deliciously antiAristotelian. If the pieces don’t necessarily fit, all the better for our 21st century theater. There’s room for discovery and for making it our own. There are strong female characters who don’t have to dress up as men to get what they want. There’s intrigue, comedy and heartbreak. Long before the modernist masters Chekhov and Ibsen shattered our concepts of tragedy and comedy as separate forms, Shakespeare did it in a handful of plays literary critics have tended not to like because they won’t fit into neat categories. I think of all these “problem plays,” All’s Well that Ends Well provides the richest rewards. Shakespeare found his source material for the play in Boccaccio’s Decameron — probably picked up through an adaptation called Palace of Pleasure by William Painter. There’s been much discussion about when the play was first written and what it was called. Some think the play might have originally been called A Bad Beginning Makes a Good Ending. Others believe it is the long lost Love’s Labor's Won and is the companion piece to Love’s Labor’s Lost. All of this wrangling over lost titles and probable dates entertains the Shakespeareans who are often more interested in the history of the plays than in the plays themselves. If All’s Well that Ends Well is a companion piece to anything, I think it is a feminist answer to The Taming of the Shrew. It is delightful to think that the playwright who once argued that you could abuse a woman into submission learned his lesson and realized a woman could love a man into redemption. Redemption, loss, death, love, sin, and deception weave together in All’s Well that Ends Well to create a comedy of forgiveness. The classic structure of folk tales, the miracle of morality plays, and the social commentary of realistic drama all combine as parallel plots are linked by the single-minded determination of one of Shakespeare’s finest characters. After 13 seasons, I’m delighted to share our first Shakespeare production with you. Triad Stage plans to make Shakespeare a more frequent member of our family, but we plan to do so by exploring the less familiar plays. I hope we will all enjoy the potential to be found when we stop thinking of these plays as problems and start embracing them as possibilities. After all, all is only really well not because of how it ends but because of the excitement of the journey. 18

All’s Well that Ends Well has been categorized by scholars as a “problem,” and so could William Shakespeare’s biography. With very little documentation available, we only have glimpses into the life of one of history’s greatest dramatists. Born in 1564 to John and Mary Shakespeare in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the exact date of Shakespeare’s birth is unknown, though it is traditionally accepted as April 23, St. George’s Day. His father was a man of some prominence in the community and was elected to several civic positions in Stratford throughout his lifetime. It is believed that young William began his education at the age of 6 or 7, attending the King’s New School near his childhood home on Henley Street. Although there is no record of his attendance it seems likely that a man in John Shakespeare’s position would have chosen to have his son educated, and Shakespeare’s plays are testaments to his knowledge and wide reading. In 1582 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway and the couple had three children. The family eventually settled in London and by 1592 Shakespeare had achieved some success as an actor and playwright. A 1594 record shows him as one of the leading members of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the acting company which would later become known as the King’s Men. It was here that he would be a major shareholder and write and produce his plays for the rest of his career. Shakespeare’s writing life is often broken up into four periods; the period (1601-1608) in which he wrote All’s Well that Ends Well is considered to be a dark and tumultuous time for him. His world was going through dramatic changes: his father died in 1601 after many great disappointments and financial losses and that same year some of his best friends were executed or imprisoned for treason against Queen Elizabeth. It is during this time that many of his great tragedies were written, but also this gem of a play that refused to be easily categorized. Shakespeare, like many great writers, began to experiment and broke forms that he himself had created. As with the rest of his life, there is speculation over how Shakespeare spent his last days. The cause of his death is a mystery. We do know that he was interred on April 5, 1616, at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford. Though we have little official documentation of his life, we do have something much greater — his plays. In his words, characters and stories we find a man full of rich imagination, keen intellect and an ability to allow us into the worlds of others. It is there that we find his true life and legacy. 19

Rossillion SHAKESPEARE’S FICTONAL ROSSILLION

Shakespeare’s “Rossillion” in All’s Well that Ends Well is presented as a long-standing French province — a place rich with French history, ripe for nostalgia, and representative of an idealized French past. THE HIS TORIC ROUSSILLON

Situated precariously along the border of France and Spain, Roussillon was a site of much political instability throughout the Middle Ages. Roussillon was part of Catalonia — not France — for much of its history. France gained control of it in 1648 following the Thirty Year’s War.

Paris SHAKESPEARE’S PARIS

The world that Shakespeare was born into was heavily influenced by the Renaissance movement of the 15th and 16th centuries. Paris as Shakespeare knew it was equally shaped by this important artistic and cultural movement. At the center of the French Renaissance, the city flourished with art, architecture and science. PARIS IN THE EARLY 1920s

After World War I, the French were eager to move on from pre-war values and wartime gloom. The 1920s sparked a new period of art, culture, leisure and nightlife — all in the name of self-expression and personal freedom — and, once again, Paris was at the center of it all.

Florence SHAKESPEARE’S FLORENCE

For much of the 16th century, there was a widespread struggle for power and territory among the city-states of Italy. This long, tangled string of conflicts — known as the Italian War — included a conflict between the Duchy of Florence and the Republic of Siena, Florence’s last remaining rival in Tuscany at the time. FLORENCE IN THE EARLY 1920s

The early 1920s in Italy saw the rapid rise of Mussolini and Fascism. Florence, like other major industrial cities across Italy, bred violent Fascist terrorism strikes that would ultimately squash the opposing Socialist movement and contribute to the downfall of Italian democracy.

Your ticket price essentially covers just half of what you experience when you come to Triad Stage. If we had to survive on ticket sales alone, every seat to every performance would be at least $50 (our current average ticket price is $25).

Triad Stage is very proud of the name of our theater building — The Pyrle Theater — made possible by a generous donation by Tobee and Leonard Kaplan in honor of Tobee’s mother, Pyrle Gibson.

Pyrle Gibson (1909-2000) was a woman with a great sense of humor, who found goodness in all people and beauty in the world around her. Her family always came first in her life and with them she shared her love of theater, music and the thrill of sports. The theater is named for her in loving memory by the children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of the Kaplan family with whom she shared her love, wisdom and joy of life.
